EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome Happy Christmas, Hanukkah, Divali or just plain happy holidays. Welcome to the December – January issue of Out & About.

Celebrations are all about light at this time of year – candles flickering, lasers cutting through the dark and murk, displays of colour and warmth. Syon Park, Chiswick House & Gardens and Kew Gardens all have night time shows for your delectation – page 6. Several of the big parks also have sessions organised to make decorations for the great festivals of light – page 16 – 17. We are blessed with some great live theatre venues in west London and the range of theatre for children available this season is fantastic – pages 8 – 9. In addition to the usual suspects, this year St Albans Church in Chiswick is hosting the premiere of the Street Dance version of Scrooge, with dance crew IMD as seen on TV – page 10. Sara Ward at Hen Corner has a recipe for her Chilli Chocolate treat – page 28 and we have some great present ideas. Interior designer Angela Corden has been working with a painter and three local photographers to produce The Chiswick Collection: stylish homeware decorated with images of the river – page 21. We all know that our high streets are in a state of crisis, with empty shops everywhere, so we’ve come up with a few suggestions of great gifts from

independent businesses. Do your Christmas shopping and support your local high street traders at the same time – pages 22 – 23. All this is great if you have family around you and money to do all these lovely things, but Christmas can be very lonely or stressful and all of this has an impact on our mental health. Two initiatives have started recently in this area to bring people together to support each other. Café Conversations is, as the name suggests, an opportunity to meet people you don’t know and talk about things outside your own personal silo – page 20. Better Mental Health Chiswick is more of a network looking to make suggestions for self-help – page 26. When it’s all over for another year you’ll no doubt embark on the annual tidy up. Nicky the Finicky Friend may be able to help you there – page 32. Or you may find you are just looking forward to a good night out, in which case Watermans Friday Nights Live might be to your taste – page 30. Enjoy the holiday season. Happy New Year.

ENCHANTED GARDENS

Enchanted GARDENS

Christmas events in spectacular gardens We are lucky in west London to have some beautiful parks and gardens – the legacy of the country estates of the aristocracy which have been enveloped in the modern city. A visit to Syon Park, Chiswick House & Gardens or Kew Gardens is lovely in any season, but in winter you can enjoy the gardens at night as well as by day – at a price.

Chiswick House & Gardens – After Dark

Kew Gardens Christmas at Kew

Syon Park – Winter Secret Garden

15 November – 30 December

22 November – 5 January

28 November – 22 December

This winter the gardens are transformed by light installations illuminating the 18th century architecture and gardens. You are invited to follow the trail of lights showing the grounds as you’ve never seen them before and see the selection of modern art along the way. The house itself will be the subject of a light show projected on to the exterior and set to music in what the organisers promise will be a ‘spectacular’ visual display. Food and drink available.

Now in its sixth year, Christmas at Kew has gained a reputation as a great spectacle. This year’s winter trail is bigger than ever before, with over a million twinkling pea-lights and thousands of laser beams. Watch the Palm House Pond finale springing to life with brightly criss-crossing colours, water screen projections and jumping light jets that dance to seasonal classics. For children there are fairground rides and the opportunity to meet Father Christmas and his elves. There’s spiced cider, mulled wine and hot chocolate to keep you warm as you wander round with the aroma of roasting chestnuts and toasted marshmallows in the air. As twilight falls, the magic begins …

Offered as an ‘experience’ by BestPartiesEver, Winter Secret Garden is an indoor event with canapé reception and four course dinner. They’ve created ‘an enchanted Winter Secret Garden’ decorated with birch and willow in silver and white and snow laden Christmas trees. ‘Woodland fairy folk’ circle and entertain while you eat and the entertainment also includes dodgems and a casino.

THE STREET DANCE VERSION

This Christmas Chiswick will be hosting a show unlike any that has gone before. I.M.D, the street dance company who became household names after appearances on TV shows Britain’s Got Talent and Got to Dance, will be performing here in the premiere of a street dance version of Scrooge. The tale follows Ebony Scrooge, a young woman from a difficult background who is now the CEO of a major Fortune 100 corporation. Ebony is wealthy, famous and very successful, but is feared and loathed by everyone, as she does whatever it takes to get what she wants no matter who it hurts. Ebony has one secret, she is terrified of Christmas!

Tickets £22.50 available from Eventbrite. St Alban's Church Hall, Acton Green Common, South Parade, W4 5LG. 10

James Narh – the Simon Cowell of Street Dance The street dance version of Dickens’ tale A Christmas Carol is the brainchild of James Narh, who is best described as the Simon Cowell of street dance. He set up a dance company when he was 19 and doing a bit of modelling, found himself hanging out with dancers, watching them muck about in rehearsals. His crew, GWI (Get With It) quickly became popular. He then set up dance competitions and the whole thing mushroomed, from the first small competition in a school hall in Battersea to shows at Wembley Arena and the O2 with the Street Dance XXL Championships. There was a film Street Dance 3D and TV shows until over a period of 20 years street dance had gone from the street to mainstream popular culture in Britain. James took a step back from the multi million pound business it had become two years ago and now raises funds for the refurbishment of St Alban’s Church in Chiswick. Scrooge will be the first production on the church’s new stage.

WINTER IN THE GARDEN ‘Now that the winter months are upon us and there is little that we can usefully do in our gardens it is a good time to go for a walk and visit other gardens to see how they look at this season and to admire their structure. Here at Osterley we have a Winter Garden that I designed and planted five years ago in an area that used to be a Pinetum (conifer collection) during the 19thC. and was in a little visited part of the formal gardens. Although we have decided to restore our gardens to their 18thC. splendour this seemed the ideal place to grow trees, plants and shrubs that would look at their best during the colder months and when light levels are low. I based my design on circles with a central circular lawn following the shape of a mature cherry tree that was the dominant feature in this area, this has large beds surrounding it in which we have planted a lovely selection of shrubs, such as hollies with evergreen and variegated leaves and also cornus – dogwoods – such as ‘Midwinter Fire’ with, as its name suggests, brilliant, glowing stems that light up the space on even the dullest of days.

Under these there are thousands of winter flowering bulbs such as snowdrops and the beautiful little dwarf irises such as the purple variety ‘George’. Along with these are many herbaceous plants that have evergreen leaves and/or berries or fruits that show up at this time of the year. Of course last winter when the ‘Beast from the East’ brought us so much snow this new feature really came into its own as it sparkled in the sunshine with the bright stems and flowers glowing in the reflected light. The gardens at Osterley are open every day of the year apart from Christmas Day and are particularly good for a walk to blow away the cobwebs or even to work off all those extra calories that we can’t help but consume during the Christmas period!'

INVEST IN SUCCESS WITH TALENTED APPRENTICES FOR YOUR BUSINESS expert teaching staff often update their industry experience on a regular basis. Other benefits for employers include the opportunity to enrol existing employees in our apprenticeship programmes, thereby up-skilling staff while improving their motivation and productivity in the workplace.

If you want to drive success in your business, then hiring apprentices and training them at The University of West London (UWL) – The Career University is the answer. Work-based training like an apprenticeship is a powerful tool for adding value to operations. It up-skills staff, can bolster loyalty and brings the latest theory and best practice into your workplace.

Apprentices are required to spend 20% of their work time ‘off the job’ and University of West London is the ideal place to do this part of the training. Ofsted – the education regulator – rates UWL as ‘Outstanding,’ recognising the high quality of education on offer. Meanwhile, our

Apprenticeships are available in the areas of digital industries, business and management, civil engineering, nursing and health care. Diwali, Hanukkah and Christmas are all festivals of light and candles play a major part in all three. The Hindu festival of Diwali involves lighting small clay lamps for five days and nights to signify the triumph of good over evil. During the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah candles are lit to commemorate a miracle. The story goes that there was only enough oil to light the menorah in the Temple in Jerusalem for one day, but it remained lit for eight days, hence the nine-branched candelabrum – the candle in the middle is used to light the other candles during the eight day festival. Christmas is also a festival of light because Christians believe Jesus is the light of the world and Christmas celebrates his birth. Christingle services at many churches are celebrated with a Christingle – an orange with a candle stuck into it, with sweets or dried fruits and a ribbon – given to children to symbolise Christ’s light.

Wreath

MAKING SESSIONS Christmas wreaths now decorate front doors to mark Advent but the history of the wreath predates Christianity. The Greeks and the Romans wore garlands for their festivals and wreaths were hung on ancient pagan altars to deter evil spirits and welcome benevolent ones. The winter solstice, which takes place on 21st December this year, has been celebrated by pagans for thousands of years. The traditional Celtic fire festival of Yule marks the return of the light after the longest night of the year. Evergreens such as pine branches represent the continuation of life during those darkest days of winter. Wreath making sessions don’t come cheap. These sessions range from £25 to £85.

CAFÉ CONVERSATIONS

CAFÉ

Conversations Louise Kaye

The art of conversation is not dead Louise Kaye does not do things by halves. When she puts on concerts to raise money for research into Parkinson's disease she hires the Queen Elizabeth Hall or the Wigmore Hall and fills them, making many thousands of pounds for charity. Now she's decided Chiswick would benefit from a place to chat and within about half an hour of deciding that she'd signed up two venues – Avanti at Bedford Corner and the Grove Café in Grove Park, catering for conversational needs both north and south of the A4. The idea came from her listening to a Radio 4 documentary on loneliness; how easy it is for people particularly in retirement, to sit within their own four walls and not socialise. Before you know it you find that days have passed without talking to anyone. She’s set up Café Conversations, which have been taking place in Chiswick since October. Being Louise, she's aiming higher than a cursory comment or two about the weather. Two 'conversation starters' have a list of prepared questions (nothing too personal and no politics) which they discuss in groups of three and four over a period of two hours. People just turn up to sit and talk and they’ve had up to 13 turn up for a session. “It’s taken off surprisingly quickly and although there are new people coming along every week there are some who are becoming regulars and new friendships are being formed” she says. She’s now set up a website explaining how to set up your own Café Conversations group at www.cafe-conversations.co.uk

Café Conversations will continue in Chiswick on Mondays and Wednesdays: At Avanti, Bedford Corner, South Parade W4 1LD, on Mondays from 3-5pm. January 14th, 21st and 28th.

At Grove Cafe, 7 Grove Park Rd W4 3RS, on Wednesdays from 2.45-4.45pm. January 16th, 23rd & 30th.

The sessions are not suitable for children and it's important to be there from the start, says Louise. The events are free and there's no obligation to spend money in either café.

THE CHISWICK COLLECTION

THE CHISWICK

Collection

Beautiful homeware celebrating W4 Interior designer Angela Corden has lived in Chiswick for 20 years. Chatting with friends one day she had the idea of taking the landscape of the River Thames at Chiswick and representing it on a range of products people will want to have in their homes. Working with local artists, a painter and three photographers whose pictures catch the River Thames in its many moods and phases as it runs through Chiswick, she has created The Chiswick Collection. In the past Angela worked for big corporations such as British Airways, in collaboration with some very stylish brands including Le Caprice, Anya Hindmarsh and Kelly Hoppen and she brings that experience, an attention to detail and insistence on quality, to The Chiswick Collection.

Voilà The Chiswick Collection was born!

Placemats and Coasters Three sets of high quality placemats and coasters by the three artists with picturesque images of the Georgian riverside houses at Strand on the Green and views of the river and foreshore. MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVES

Mental Health INITIATIVES

Ruth Cadbury MP and Labour activist Sally Malin at the launch of Better Mental Health Chiswick in October

Responses to a crisis in mental health

Better Mental Health Chiswick

There has been a lot of talk during the year about mental health issues, with the Chancellor Philip Hammond announcing in the autumn Budget that up to £250 million a year would be invested in new “crisis services”, including 24-hour support through the NHS 111 telephone helpline; children and young people’s crisis teams; mental health support in every major A&E; specialist mental health support ambulances; and more community services, such as “crisis cafes.”

The Labour group in Chiswick have started a group called Better Mental Health Chiswick. During the 2018 local election campaign it was noticeable on the doorstep that concerns about mental health were common, so some of the prospective Labour councillors in Chiswick (who were not elected) decided to take action.

While welcoming any extra spending in this area, the reaction from Brentford & Isleworth MP Ruth Cadbury MP was “Why wait for a crisis? What help is that crisis service to the young person with autism in my constituency who’s had to wait years to even get a referral, then waited 15 months for their first CAMHS assessment that was then cancelled by text with no follow-up. That child and their parents shouldn’t have to be grateful for a crisis service – by then too much damage has been done to their development, their education and their mental health”. Talking about the impact on local authority services from the years of austerity she said “Schools have had to cut specialists that provide early interventions and the NHS has cut school nurses. Between them they identify children at risk and families in crisis and support them”.

You can contact Better Mental Health Chiswick by email at: bettermentalhealthinchiswick@gmail.com and through Facebook at www.facebook.com/ bettermentalhealthinchiswick

One initiative is to publish a list of suggestions for January to encourage people to go out and meet others on gloomy winter days – Dungeons and Dragons at the library, coffee mornings, tea afternoons – drawing people’s attention to the variety of practical activities and local events on offer, many of them free, which you can also find on The Chiswick Calendar website. Better Mental Health Chiswick is organising its own event on 21st January with an art workshop and yoga.

You can also use the QR code to take part in their survey of mental health needs in the area. For a full list of cultural and social activities in the Chiswick area go to The Chiswick Calendar website: www.thechiswickcalendar.co.uk

HEN CORNER

Hen CORNER

Sara Ward offers up a favourite Christmas recipe I love celebrations, be that birthdays, weddings or special anniversaries, and I especially love Christmas, but I do struggle a bit with New Year.

I suppose if you see the calendar year as a brand new start each January followed by a steady marathon through to the finale on New Year's Eve at the end of December, then it fits tidily with kitchen calendars and desk diaries, but I see the year as a journey across a valley between two mountain tops, with New Year behind and Christmas ahead. The bottom of the valley is a summer sun trap and autumn marks the steady climb towards the high point of our festivities. Begone you who pack away decorations on Boxing Day, there are 12

days of Christmas, and I shall continue to celebrate until 6th January! Traditionally, we can keep the tree up until Epiphany, remembering the Wise Men from the East that visited baby Jesus in Bethlehem, not that you could have made that journey by camel in just twelve days‌ A treat that we bake a lot throughout the year comes into its own this time of year, we cut it into cubes and pack it up in pretty bags as gifts, we frost it with sugar or gold leaf and serve in triangles with coffee, we bake as a round cake and share with friends at supper time. It’s a regular favourite at the bakery each week as well.

Chocolate Chilli Cake Ingredients:

Method:

100g Dark Chocolate 275g Caster Sugar 165g Margarine 1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder 1 tsp Chilli Flakes Pinch salt 5 eggs 2 Tbsp ground almonds

1. Preheat the oven to 180c and line a baking tin (round 20cm or square 22cm) with baking parchment.

If you'd like to brush up on your kitchen skills or join in with the seasons here at Hen Corner, check out our courses over the next couple of months, full details on the website:

Bread: Sweet & Savoury - 16th January Simply Sausages - 22nd January Toast & Marmalade - 29th January

2. In a heatproof bowl, place all the ingredients except the eggs & almonds and gently melt over a saucepan of hot water, stirring occasionally. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs & ground almonds. 4. Remove the chocolate mixture from the heat and stir in the egg mixture, folding with a spoon to combine well, pour into the prepared tin. 5. Bake at 180c for 35 mins, cool in tin, dust with icing sugar before serving. A demonstration of this recipe can be found on YouTube.com/HenCorner HenCorner.com

NEED TO DE-CLUTTER?

NEED TO

de-clutter? MEET NICKY THE FINICKY FRIEND

Spare bedroom before

Nicky ‘the Finicky Friend’

New stuff for Christmas? Need to get rid of some of the old to make way for it? The combination of having new possessions given to you at Christmas and having a few days off before going back to work after New Year usually produces the urge for a good throw out. Sorting out your possessions and re-establishing order over your personal space can be very satisfying, cathartic even, but if you’ve left it a while and let things get a bit out of hand it can also be a bit daunting. Enter Nicky the de-clutterer.

“It's not about getting rid of everything”

“It’s just like having a personal trainer really” says Nicky. “You just need someone to be objective about the task and to keep up your motivation”. Her job is not to tell you what to do, she says. On that she is quite clear. She is not judgemental. If the cherished collection of key rings or bottle tops you lovingly put together as a child is something you still value and want to keep she is not there to try and persuade you otherwise.

Spare bedroom after

“It's not about getting rid of everything” she says. Her job is to enable you to store your possessions in a logical way so your space is not depressingly cluttered and you can lay hands on things when you want to and so you’re not going out and buying duplicates of things you know you have somewhere but can’t find. “Typically people are unsure how long to hold on to old bank statements and things like that”. Nicky has always enjoyed being organised. Her own decor is not minimalist, far from it, she says. But she can find things. Her first career was as a graphic designer. She launched her de-cluttering business at the beginning of 2018 having spent years helping friends and family organise their space, because she enjoys doing it. “It’s important to be logical in how you keep things” she says, “but not everyone’s logic is the same”. “Trust”, she says, “is all important”. She meets her clients first and gets to know them a bit to understand what they want to achieve and what kind of system would best suit them. Once that rapport is established she can help you see the wood for the trees.

Happy de-cluttering
