PE at Our Lady of the Rosary

For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:6
Physical education (PE) develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. These include dance, games, gymnastics, swimming and athletics. PE incorporates teamwork and develops competition and good sportsmanship. PE promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. Therefore enabling them to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.
Taking part in PE lessons and sport promotes a healthy attitude, lifestyle and well-being.
Our children take part in both outdoor and indoor PE lessons. Alongside this our children also do swimming lessons, to develop the essential life skill of being able to swim in years 3, 4 and 5.
Our principal aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding and we do this through a mixture of whole-class teaching and individual/group activities. It is important for children to not only learn the skills and rules needed to play different sports but also to have the opportunity to develop their personal best and to take part in competitive sport.
A typical PE lesson would start with a warm up exercise. This would be followed by the teaching of explicit skills to the pupils. All pupils are given a chance to master the skills taught before moving onto a game activity. Teachers draw attention to good examples of individual performance as models for the other children and we encourage the children to evaluate their own work as well as the work of other children. Within lessons we give the children the opportunity both to collaborate and to compete with each other, and they have the opportunity to use a wide range of resources.
In all classes, there are children of differing physical ability. Whilst recognising this fact, we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this through a range of strategies: setting common tasks that are open-ended and can have a variety of results, setting tasks of increasing difficulty, where not all children complete all tasks, grouping children by ability and setting different tasks for each group, providing a range of challenge through the provision of different resources. A PE lesson will finish with a cool down activity and a reflection on what has been learnt.
Children are assessed informally by the teacher during each lesson and at the end of a topic to measure pupil progress. The results of these informal assessments are recorded on our Jasmine Assessment Portal. These are reported back to the headteacher, subject leader, pupils and pupils’ parents. Our outside PE provider, Brentford, also provide half-termly assessments of the children. These are reported to each individual teacher.
The school provides a range of PE-related activities for children at the end of the school day and at lunchtime. Many clubs are offered, e.g. gymnastics, netball, football, and ballet. These encourage children to further develop their skills in a range of activity areas. The school sends details of the current club activities to parents at the beginning of each term.
The school also plays regular fixtures against other local schools. This introduces a competitive element to team games and allows the children to put into practice the skills that they have developed in their lessons. These opportunities foster a sense of team spirit and co-operation amongst our children.
We also provide opportunities for the children to experience a range of different sports, such as skipping, tennis and judo. We do this by offering taster days, workshops for the children to attend and assemblies.
