Year 6 Meet the Teacher

Maths

O All content from previous years will be built upon.

O Focus mental arithmetic, including times table knowledge.

In Year 6 we will work through and revise the following topics:

English

Reading – Increased understanding of the books the children read, inferring information and evaluating language choices.

Writing – Extended writing, joined handwriting, focussing on planning, drafting and editing.

SPaG – Spellings from Year 5/6 list & spelling rules. Focus on using increased range of punctuation, including brackets, colons and semi- colons. Grammar from previous years will be recapped and new content explored.

PE

O PE will be taught on a Wednesday (outdoor) and a Thursday (indoor).

O Earrings to be removed for all PE lessons.

O If your child is in school, they are expected to take part in PE unless they have a letter from home.

Each week, Year 6 are set:

O RE

O SATs Companion

O Written Maths (alternate weeks)

O Written English (alternate weeks)

O Mental maths

O Spellings

O Reading

O HomeworkHandwriting will be set on Google Classroom on a Thursday and is due in Tuesday morning.

What can you do at home to support your child?

O Read as much as possible.

O Practise times tables and statutory spelling words.

O Watch the support videos on SATs companion or ones provided by myself.

O Encourage attendance at booster classes.

O Chat to children about the topics covered in RE & special times of year in the Church.

O Discuss the topics we cover in school, find books about those topics.

O Regularly check they have the right stationery.

O Communicate with the school if there is anything we need to know.

Reading Record

*Reading Records to be handed in every Tuesday morning to be checked.

*Book ‘check and change days’ are Tuesday and Thursday.

*Reading Records to be in school every day

*Pupils/ parents are to write in at least four comments a week which can also be comments from books that they are reading for pleasure at home.

Diary

*Bring into school every day

*To be signed by a Parent/Guardian for every Tuesday morning

*Comments to be written in blue pen or pencil

*They should spend a little time setting their diary up - write in the week number/P.E days/homework days.

SATs

KS2 Assessments

Please do not complete past SATs papers at home. Historically, this has not been in the best interest of pupils and can lead to increased anxiety and false readings. They will be getting plenty of opportunities to do so in school and have been working towards these assessments for years – they are KS2 assessments.

I will be given targeted advice and suggestions tailored specifically to your child throughout the year and on occasion, we will send home additional work where appropriate.

Uniform

O Children should take pride in their uniform and are expected to be dressed smartly at all times, including on PE days.

O Names! Names! Names!

O Girls: white socks with summer dresses and grey socks or tights with winter uniform Boys: grey socks

O Waterproof navy coat (preferably the school coat).

O Wellies

Opal Play Reminders

We live in a country with variable weather. It should not stop the children from playing outside.

O Appropriate clothing O Coats/Wellies etc… The children will be playing outside in most weather.

O E-Safety/Online Safety is taught across the school explicitly each half term.

O As technology and the internet are being used more so now than ever by children, it is very important to know what your child is using technology for and to monitor this closely and carefully at home.

O For any concerns regarding online safety please see Ms McNicholas (E-Safety coordinator & Safeguarding Lead)

Governors’ Fund

The Governors School Development Fund is in place because the school Governors are responsible for a proportion of the maintenance cost of the school buildings, for example governors over the last years have contributed to the cost of the new fencing, windows, and drainage issues. Without your contributions, we would not have been able to undertake such projects. This is an annual donation for the school year 2025/26.

We have uploaded the amount £100 per family on to your individual SCOPAY accounts and it will be attached to your youngest/only child. We will continue to claim Gift Aid on the amounts that you donate.
