SPRING IS HERE, FINALLY. This time of year brings new energy to most households. It’s a refreshing notion that pushes most of us to clean away the stuffiness of winter and let the fresh feeling of spring flow throughout our homes.

Winter had us focusing on indoor projects. Finishing renovations in our primary bedroom and bathroom have taken longer than expected, as most projects tend to do. However, the finishing touches are beginning to come together and I can see my vision coming to life. As I’ve shopped around, spoken with local experts, designers, friends and family, I’ve been reminded of the importance of word of mouth. Everyone, including the many clients I meet through this magazine, offer recommendations for sourcing finishes, materials and local people to help with an installation. I’m also happy to recommend the amazing businesses we have worked with along the way.

Once our current project is finished, it’ll be onto the next! Making this house our home has truly been a dream, so far. We’ve had hiccups, but we’ve also shared laughter and made memories with a renewed sense of creativity.

The owners of each home featured in this issue of OUR HOMES spearheaded their project’s design process. Drawing inspiration from their lifestyles and hobbies, the architecture and interior design of each home reflects the individuality of the homeowners.

As I look out at my gardens, I begin to itemize a list of things to do outside and in this year. After all, next year we’ll be hosting our wedding on our property. In the meantime, there’s much to do to prepare!

Happy spring everyone!

TIME TO RENOVATE?

Designer Tamarisk McNalty Stephens shares her ideas.
There are many factors to consider when embarking on a renovation project – outdated style is not at the top of the list!

DETERIORATION

Like the human body, our homes need constant care and maintenance to keep them in good condition. The age of a house can impact the performance of behindthe-scenes systems, which may require some attention or an upgrade to perform their best. Or perhaps you fell in love with a property, but the house was a fixer-upper with sure signs of wear. Or there may be mould that needs remediation. Structural and safety elements, mechanical systems and building envelope upgrades (i.e. sufficient insulation, energy-efficient windows and doors and a solid, waterproof roof) should take priority over cosmetic improvements.

VALUE

Understand the resale value of homes in your area to ensure an investment in your property makes financial sense. Even if you love the location and intend to stay longterm, there are always extenuating life circumstances, and you don’t want to be upside down should you have to sell. Depending on the scope of the renovation, it might make more sense to move into a new home that checks more boxes than your existing one – and you can also sidestep the stress and expense of a renovation.

FUNCTIONALITY

When moving into a new home, it can be tempting to renovate right away; however, remember that renovating is much more involved than refreshing a space with a few coats of paint. There are small-scale updates you can do in the short term so your home reflects your style without committing to a full renovation. Allowing yourself to live in a home as-is (layout-wise) for a while allows you to discover what works and what doesn’t. You will see where the sun hits at different times of the year and people’s favourite spots to sit and congregate. You will learn whether the mudroom functions well, the laundry room can handle the load, the dining room can accommodate your guests, a fireplace enhances the ambience or if that huge tub warrants the square footage it occupies. Taking your time provides the opportunity to determine your priorities. You can create a solid plan (with limited regrets!) when ready to hit go on your big renovation.

AFFORDABILITY

A renovation will likely cost more than you anticipate. It is very challenging for a contractor to provide an accurate estimate at the outset because there are always unforeseen circumstances in a renovation. Therefore, you should always add a contingency to your budget. Avoid the stress of being stretched beyond your means by ensuring you have the financial ability to fund the project.

STYLE

Aesthetic preferences are personal. Living in a home that does not reflect your taste, personality and life experiences doesn’t feel great. When determining your style, don’t neglect to consider the surrounding site and landscape and the home’s architectural integrity so the finished project is a cohesive package.

A full-scale renovation is very involved and can include anything from re-configuring the layout, adding an addition, upgrading structural elements, new mechanical systems, changing out materials, finishes and fixtures and installing new millwork, furniture, window coverings, area rugs, art, etc. There are many things to consider – know when to hire professionals. A solid team adds insurance to your investment and offers the experience and expertise to help you through the process. OH

CREATE A

Crafting unique cocktails and mocktails at home has never been more popular. What better way to embrace the trend than with a spring-inspired botanical bar? Whether hosting a garden party or a breezy evening indoors, elevate your entertaining game with floral-infused spirits, fresh herb garnishes and nature-inspired glassware. This season, transform your cocktail station into a lush, garden-to-glass experience that’s as beautiful as delicious.

Essential Ingredients

The first step to setting up a botanical bar is to stock it with essentials that bring a garden-fresh vibe to your drinks. Start with botanical spirits like floral gins, elderflower liqueur or herbal vodkas. For mocktails, offer non-alcoholic options such as botanical tonics, sparkling waters or syrups. Fresh herbs like mint, basil, rosemary and edible flowers like pansies and marigolds add a decorative and flavourful touch. Citrus fruits – lemons, limes and oranges – provide bright accents, while their zest enhances the aroma and presentation. Finally, craft syrups and infusions, like lavender simple syrup or honey-rosemary blends, will elevate your creations with subtle complexity.

Glassware & Accessories

Choose barware that blossoms! Embrace the “more is more” movement with bold, floral-patterned highball, lowball and wine glasses that add a cheerful vibe to your setup. Enhance the look with a stylish ice bucket, shaker and cocktail picks in jewel tones inspired by spring blooms. Don’t forget colourful napkins, patterned paper straws and a large serving tray – perfect for transporting your creations to guests. These playful details ensure your bar cart is a functional centrepiece worthy of any garden party.

Styling

No built-in bar? No problem! Transform an existing piece of furniture into a stylish, botanical bar. A shelving unit, bookcase, buffet or antique chest can all be the perfect foundation. Use mirrors, framed artwork or a feature wall with bold wallpaper to create a stunning backdrop. Arrange your glassware together for easy access and intersperse bar tools and ingredients for a functional yet decorative display. Add life to the setup with a fresh bouquet of flowers or a small potted plant. For a personal touch, include a chic cocktail recipe book or handwritten cards to inspire your guests. You can always add some nature-themed twinkle lights for a little ambience. This creative approach ensures your bar is practical and eye-catching for springtime entertaining.

Hosting

Throwing a seasonal cocktail party goes beyond serving signature drinks like rose lemon spritzers or mint julep mocktails. Include a deconstructed bar where guests can craft their own drinks using the provided garnishes – then have them present and name their original cocktails. Pair the drinks with springtime appetizers such as citrus-marinated olives or herbed flatbreads. Set the mood with an upbeat playlist featuring hits like Flowers by Miley Cyrus and Lavender Haze by Taylor Swift. Encourage guests to dress in garden-party attire for a cohesive theme. With these thoughtful touches, your botanical bar will surely grow into an annual springtime event. OH

FAMILY TAPESTRY

NESTLED IN HER COSY OFFICE, KARLA PUTS DOWN HER PEN AND WATCHES THE SPRING SUNSHINE DANCE THROUGH THE TOWERING SUGAR MAPLES OUTSIDE HER WINDOW. “I FEEL SO PRIVILEGED TO LIVE HERE,” SHE SAYS. “I WAKE UP AND FEEL JOY.”

kKarla, a writer, and her husband Randy, a retired dentist, bought this rural property near Stouffville two-and-a-half years ago and moved in last June. After living in Manitoba for many years, they relocated to Ontario to be close to their daughter Marie and son Drew. “Our children lobbied us to move, and now we have grandchildren, so we knew it was the right time,” says Randy.

They bought the property sight unseen except for video tours with

their realtor. While it was challenging planning the construction of a house from afar, Karla and Randy knew they had found the right fit.

“We had phenomenal people working with us, and they took great care of everything,” Randy says. The build, spearheaded by Steve Snider Construction Inc., began in July 2023 and finished in September 2024.

“Project Manager Jared Olsen was amazing to work with,” says Karla.

“He was never in a rush and came up with great ideas.” Continued on page 32

Tall vaulted ceilings and an openconcept living space make this home feel welcoming and bright.

home & builder

Situated on 10 acres, this three-bedroom, 3,500 sq. ft. bungalow is elegant, with thoughtfullycurated family heirlooms and contemporary accents. Alison Strickland, design director and founder of Narratif, spearheaded the design. “She was a joy to work with. We needed a house that was personalized and family-oriented,” says Karla. “We have two dogs and grandchildren. We wanted a house we could live in, not a showcase. Alison understood what was important to us and what makes a house a home.” Karla describes the overall design as quiet country, a peaceful home that looks timeless with natural light and space. “We used colour, curation, art and different materials to achieve this,” she explains.

Every detail of the customized kitchen reflects Randy’s passion for cooking, especially the AGA induction range with its three ovens and large cooktop. “It’s beautiful and the centre of the kitchen,” he says. Sandy Sillaots, owner of Hickory Lane Kitchens, designed the space, including all the cabinetry on the main level. “We spent a lot of time talking with Sandy about function and flow,” says Randy. “We walked through various virtual versions of this kitchen. I don’t like clutter, so I wanted clean lines and everything in its place.” Two dishwashers, a built-in freezer and a panel refrigerator, all from Tasco Appliances, facilitate convenient storage and clean-up. Stone Tile supplied the striking blue-veined marble topping the island, range, backsplash and counters. Continued on page 35

Its shelves display fun trinkets and kitchen accessories collected over the years. BELOW LEFT: The kitchen’s eyecatching induction range is just one element that reflects Randy’s love for cooking. BELOW LEFT: A white oak staircase and railing from Kawartha Stair and Rail comes with a custom slide T-gate, perfect for when the grandchildren come over to play. BELOW MIDDLE: This charming breakfast nook is the perfect spot to start each day, looking out over rolling fields. BELOW RIGHT: A playful printed wallpaper and vintage wooden vanity refinished by Randy pair perfectly in the powder room.

The nearby butler’s pantry is a charming alcove where Karla enjoys baking and watching the neighbour’s grazing cows. “They put their heads through the fence and eat our plants,” she quips. A custom designed shelf, trimmed with a delicate brass rail, displays some of her favourite treasures, one of several “moments” throughout the home. “It’s like a little vignette. I love putting special items on it,” she says.

A stately Rumsford Renaissance 1500 wood-burning fireplace from Friendly Fires keeps the great room toasty and warm. “The house is net zero, so this fireplace can heat the whole house,” says Karla. The mantel is framed with barn board salvaged in Manitoba, adding a hint of home to the space. A black metal five-bulb chandelier from Pottery Barn brightens a cosy seating area before the fireplace. Maple beams (Timberkits by Country Log Homes) intersect at the apex of the vaulted ceiling. Three dormers house windows from A. Oppers Ltd. Windows & Doors that infuse the open-concept main floor with natural light.

A delightful little retreat nicknamed “the snug” is tucked away off the living area. “It’s a great place to relax. We have two comfy chairs, a TV and a walk-out to the upper deck that overlooks our yard and pool,” says Karla. Randy’s banjo and treasured mementos line the walls.

Continued on page 36

RIGHT: Extending the full height of the room, the Rumford Renaissance wood-burning fireplace and its stonework are a centrepiece in the living room.

Karla’s office, her personal refuge where she writes and spends quiet time, is part of the loft above the garage. “Randy and I each have our own space, and this is mine,” she says. Elegant french doors divide her office from the library and sitting area. Built-in bookcases with soft shelf lighting, a quilting corner and her grandmother’s sewing cupboards make this space uniquely Karla’s.

The couple’s home is a tapestry of family treasures and charming décor. Karla’s Scandinavian heritage inspired the wallpaper from Borastapeter Blomstarfröjd in the laundry room. “My mother was Danish and immigrated when she was 10,” says Karla. An antique washstand furnishes the main-floor powder room. “Randy refinished it and converted it into a sink. Another little piece of Manitoba we brought with us,” she reflects. The couple’s Golden Retrievers, past and present, are lovingly remembered in portraits displayed above the dog wash at the back door.

A white oak staircase by Kawartha Stair & Rail Inc. descends to the lower level. Two guest bedrooms comfortably accommodate son David and his family during visits from Winnipeg. “When the grandkids are older, we’ll add a ping pong or foosball table,” says Randy. A kitchenette, sitting area and walkout to the beautifully landscaped gardens by Wiggans Landscaping Ltd. make this space ideal for unwinding or entertaining.

As springtime blossoms, Karla and Randy look forward to sharing their home with family and friends. “We are so happy with how everything turned out. This home truly feels like us,” says Karla. OH

SHERWINWILLIAMS

This paint brand has unveiled, for the first time ever, a Colour Capsule of nine shades for 2025. Bosc Pear (SW 6390), Grounded (SW 6089), Sunbleached (SW 9585), Chartreuse (SW 0073), Rain Cloud (SW 9639), Clove (SW 9605), Malabar (SW 9110), White Snow (SW 9541) and Mauve Finery (SW 6282). OH

This project started with two requests: Make it durable and make it feel as large as possible. With inspo pic in hand (as I’ve said, collaboration makes the best projects) we set out creating what turned out to be a beautifully tailored, family and petfriendly space that can withstand whatever active adults, super energized kids, cats, dogs and pigs can throw at it.

The finish is rift sawn white oak, custom stained and top treated in an antiquing detail to downplay any blemishes that might occur. Simple vertical cut doors add just enough texture to create interest and height with no horizontal surfaces to clean. Soapstone tops and backsplash add depth and can withstand heat.

Guest-friendly cottages always benefit from a coffee bar/bar zone. This one is complete with paneled fridge, lit cocktail glass and liquor storage and small undermounted sink. The bar is located on the far end of the space to keep thirsty people out of the working zone.

Pantry and microwave separate the bar from the business area. Lots of drawers and pullouts are included for maximum storage. A corner pullout leaves no space wasted. The fridge is integrated into what used to be a pantry area. Matching panels skin the walls around it, integrating it with the kitchen while keeping the space looking large.

SUSTAINABLE WATERFRONT DESIGN

The design of this waterfront cottage on Catchacoma Lake blends contemporary architecture with natural elements. Built in a natural clearing on a peninsula, the cottage sits surrounded by mature forests on three sides, and on the fourth, an unobstructed view of the lake. “The design really reflects our living styles and how we wanted to interact with nature,” say cottage owners Rob Sandler and Nyla Ahmad.

ABOVE: The home is made of three distinct geometric volumes, each designed with a steep, sloped roofline to reflect the property’s natural grading.

OPPOSITE: Access and a connection to the outdoors is important for the homeowners. Upon entry, guests are immediately greeted with a view through the main living space and the large sliding glass doors, where the lake sparkles beyond.

Heather Dubbeldam is a fourth-generation architect and the principal of Dubbeldam Architecture + Design, an award-winning studio recognized for designing beautifully crafted, innovative projects that embody sustainable approaches. “We knew Heather would do a special job with the cottage,” says Nyla.

Ortolan Building Design Ltd. started construction in the spring of 2022 and completed the cottage in the summer of 2023. The design team at Dubbeldam Architecture + Design worked alongside the homeowners to develop a wish list, filled with must-haves and elements to consider and integrate into the design. Once the list was established, the next step was the siting of the cottage building. “Adapting the design to the sloping topography required careful planning,” explains Heather. “The rural location and preservation of the surrounding mature forest along with minimizing environmental impact added complexity to the site placement and construction process.” Another aspect to consider was how to design a space that would be functional for a multigenerational family in a limited footprint. This required creative spatial organization to provide both private and communal areas throughout the space.

It’s a perfect spot for kids and teenagers to hang out. BELOW RIGHT: The cottage kitchen features Greystone counters, charcoal cabinetry and a waterfall island.

The cottage consists of three distinct geometric volumes, each with steep rooflines that connect the primary and guest bedroom wings with the central living area. “The steep rooflines follow the site’s natural grade, fostering a stronger connection to the landscape while enhancing the views and access to the outdoors,” says Rob. Throughout the cottage, sustainable and energy-efficient design elements were used to further reinforce the modern, yet grounded approach. The interior has a Scandinavian-like aesthetic. The main living area houses an open-concept kitchen and common area. “We wanted to have an open kitchen/eating room where family and friends could assemble together during meals,” says Nyla. Another feature you’ll notice in the cottage is the large windows. Sourced from Ridley Windows and Doors, the windows and sliding doors keep the interior of the cottage connected with the surrounding natural beauty. “We wanted to have multiple views of the surrounding forest and lake and to have multiple routes to the outdoors where we spend most of our time in the warmer months,” says Nyla. Serving as the heart of the home, the cottage’s central living area features tall ceilings, panoramic views of the sparkling lake and a warm material palette, comprised of maple plywood and flooring, combined with steel accents. “The palette of warm woods, greys and dark accents complements the forested surroundings, while the large windows and open spaces emphasize a connection to the outdoors,” says Heather.

BOTTOM RIGHT: The bedroom’s large window offers a view into the surrounding forests.

The wood-burning stove paired with custom firewood storage adds a cosy element to the room, making it a great space to enjoy year-round. The loft space in the central living area demonstrates the design’s creative use of space to provide the family with a playful and intimate retreat. “Dubbeldam’s design makes our family and friends always feel so welcome and also so relaxed,” says Nyla.

One important element of the cottage’s design is its outdoor space. Since Nyla, Rob and their family enjoy spending time outside, it was important to have an outdoor living area they could utilize for large family gatherings, as well as quiet outdoor relaxation. An expansive deck stretches along the cottage’s lakeside, designed to integrate with the natural slope of the site. The result is a beautiful cascading deck built in tiers descending to the water’s edge.

Sitting on the deck overlooking nature’s true beauty as the sun paints the sky various colours while it sets over the water, Nyla and Rob couldn’t be happier with how the cottage turned out. “We are ecstatic with the finished product!” OH

SMALL TREES for Small Gardens

There’s nothing lovelier than sitting under a large shade tree in the heat of the summer. But many of us don’t have the space to plant a large shade tree like an oak or sugar maple.

Don’t despair! There are several smaller trees, less than 10 metres, that are well suited and very desirable that we can plant in our city or town gardens.

Here is a list of some native and some non-native trees that I think deserve some attention. They are hardy for most of Southern Ontario, have some all-year interest, generally don’t require special growing conditions and still attract pollinators with either flowers or fruit.

You won’t find birches, crabapples, Japanese maples or serviceberries on this list, as they are already well-represented in many of our gardens.

1. Katsura tree – Native to Japan, cercidiphyllum japonicum, “Hanna’s Heart,” grows to eight metres tall and three metres wide. Pyramidal in youth and a more compact growth habit. Heart-shaped green leaves turn apricot yellow in fall and have a wonderful spicy cotton candy odour.

2. Eastern redbud – Cercis canadensis is a native of the Carolinian forest. It is a very versatile tree for small properties. It comes with purple leaves (“forest pansy”), yellow leaves (“hearts of gold”) and upright, weeping and contorted forms with pink or white flowers.

3. Magnolia stellata – “Royal star,” not uncommon, is a hardy shrub or a small tree from Japan, growing up to five metres with a three-metre spread. The upright branches have large, fragrant, overlapping, strap-like double-white flowers. The burst of flowers and fragrance is worth the lack of fall colour! It also has nice bark and fuzzy flower buds for winter interest. There are many smaller magnolias on the market now that are suitable for smaller properties.

4. Purple fountain beech – Fagus sylvatica, “purple fountain,” is the perfect specimen when you need a deep purple colour to offset the rest of the garden. This weeping variety of beech tops out at ninemetres high and three-metres wide, adding architectural interest. Leaves can turn tan and stay on the tree for the winter. Every garden needs a beech tree!

5. Ironwood – Ostrya Virginiana is an eastern native reaching up to 12-metres tall. Has birch-like leaves turning yellow in the fall with interesting hop-like seed pods. Naturally growing as an understory tree, it can take a lot of shade.

6. Paperbark maple – Acer griseum, a non-invasive native to central China, has very cool bark. Curls of cinnamon-coloured bark on this small tree are reminiscent of our paper birch, a plus for winter interest. The green leaves turn brilliant red in the fall.

7. Crusader hawthorn – Crataegus crus-galli var. inermis, (meaning no thorns), “crusader” is an interesting tree for the home garden as it can be as wide as it is tall. So, when you need a horizontal element in the design, this tree will fit the bill. White flowers give over to red-orange fruit enjoyed by the birds, and there is good fall colour as well.

8. Blue beech/musclewood – Carpinus caroliniana is a handsome native from Ontario to Nova Scotia. Often seen in the woods, so it will take some shade. The bark is lovely, grey-coloured and has the appearance of flexed biceps and forearm muscles, hence the name musclewood.

9. Nannyberry – Viburnum lentago is a six-metre small tree or large shrub with flat-topped white flowers followed by bluish-black fruit that birds love. The glossy green leaves turn reddish-purple in the fall. They take some shade as well.

10. Pin cherry – Prunus pensylvanica, one of our native cherries, is only 10-metres tall. It has white flowers and long-lasting red pin-like fruit that the birds and wildlife like. It also has exfoliating bark for winter interest. Cherries have great ecological importance for our environment.

11. Persian spire – Parrotia persica, “Persian spire,” is native to Iran but grows quite well here and needs to be planted more. It is part of the witch hazel family and has very few pests. The leaves turn from yellow to orange to scarlet in the fall. The bark is interesting in the winter, too, as it has a grey, green, white and brown mosaic as it matures.

While the charm of large shade trees is undeniable, numerous smaller alternatives can thrive in urban gardens and provide a wealth of beauty and interest throughout the seasons. With any of these trees, you can create vibrant, sustainable green spaces that enhance your surroundings and support local wildlife and pollinators. Whether you’re drawn to fragrant blossoms, brilliant fall colours, or unique bark textures, these trees offer something for every garden enthusiast.

Enclosed almost entirely by glass, the great room is one of the family’s favourite spots. The room’s magnificent view of the surrounding outdoors creates a seamless combination.

BOTTOM RIGHT: A small private deck off the primary bedroom is the perfect private oasis to get away for some quiet time.

AA brand-new build, the 2,000-plus sq. ft., three-bedroom second home was completed in June 2020. It offered peace and tranquility during a time when the entire world was flipped upside down thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jennifer, her husband, son and daughter had always enjoyed visiting relatives on Stoney Lake during getaways, so when the time came to buy a vacation home of their own in cottage country, the area was a natural choice.

Building a cottage from the ground up is no easy feat, but the good news is that, with Jennifer’s passion for design and architecture, she was able to spearhead all the activities surrounding this project, from top to bottom. As the owner of Lagom Collections, Jennifer is no stranger when it comes to home design, décor, and problem-solving for interior spaces. Readers can learn more about her business by visiting her Instagram account, @lagomcollections.

With that said, Jennifer and her husband had a crystal-clear vision of what they wanted for their cottage, which helped move the process along nicely.

“We travel quite a bit, so there were a few Airbnbs we’ve stayed at in the past that fed into the inspiration of the cottage’s layout,” Jennifer reveals. “We also had a main goal to make the space functional, with fewer things that served multiple purposes, and we wanted a vacation home that was low maintenance but presented a familyfriendly environment.” Continued on page 76

home & builder

There were three distinct homes they had spent time in during their travels that acted as design influences: an ecofriendly house in Collingwood with Japandi-style features; one in France with a covered breezeway that separated the main living spaces and the bedrooms; and an Airbnb on Stoney Lake, with a focus on privacy, space and areas where family could come together to create memories during meal and game times.

Jennifer incorporated features within these three holiday experiences for their cottage and acted as the art director and co-designer while working with partners, who helped turn their dreams into reality.

Martin Mansikka from Talo Green Build Project Management was the co-designer and engineer assisting with layout and design. Pre-fab builder Legendary Group constructed the home’s envelope in its indoor facility. It was then delivered to the site. Kawartha Lake Construction was the general contractor, and Lisa Sutarri from Fiksuu assisted as the decorator and storage expert.

R&J Machine completed the pile and beam assembly for the house foundation and deck structure. Legendary delivered and assembled the home. Kawartha Lake Construction completed the interior carpentry and decking. Roofing and mechanicals were then added by the trades.

A very distinctive characteristic of the cottage is the incredible scenic views that can be seen throughout the home. “The cottage walls are predominantly glass, which can be a pain to clean but does help us all feel more connected to the outdoors,” notes Jennifer. “This in-out balance of style, something I’ve used before with work projects in the past, truly makes us all feel as if we are part of the nature that surrounds us.”

Fun and colourful artwork collected on family trips hangs in the hallway.

The great room is a favourite spot where the family gathers for fun times, and as it is bordered by glass, it offers a stunning first-hand view of Stoney Lake. Foldout customized windows with screens were installed, which further provide a stronger connection to the awe-inspiring outdoors. When open, the windows allow for a wonderful breeze to flow throughout the home but keep out pesky bugs.

Jennifer has also created a nice personal touch when it comes to the home’s interior décor. “From the art displayed to paintings, carvings and masks, everything in the cottage commemorates our years of travel and a nice reminder of the places we’ve been to and the memories we’ve made,” she says. “We also have a brilliant piece of our lake, made by our daughter, who often paints outdoors when she’s up here.”

A separate bunkie was built just over a year after the family moved in. It mirrors the cottage and is perfect for hosting. It’s simply a smaller version of the main house, providing privacy and space when guests visit. Much like the cottage, the bunkie has a covered walkway connecting it to a bathroom with a shower.

“Thanks to the positioning of the cottage and all the glass, we are very fortunate enough to see the sun rise from one part of the house in the mornings, and we get to see it set off the lake, from the other side in the evenings. Staring at it is the perfect way to unwind after a long day.” OH

Walking down a mulched path from the cottage, guests can find a charming bunkie that matches the main structure. BELOW LEFT: The bunkie has its own outdoor space, bathroom and bedroom. Guests can enjoy their own slice of paradise when they visit. MIDDLE: A queen bed floats above two smaller beds in the bunkie. HOME SWEET HOME

If you build it, they will come

NESTS

When you think of a songbird’s nest, what comes to mind? Perhaps it is the familiar robin’s nest – a neat woven cup of grasses cemented together with dabs of mud. This somewhat insulated nest cup is nature’s natural incubator, with the adult birds’ warm belly brood patch being the heat source.

With about 300 breeding bird species in Ontario, there are hundreds of variations in how cup nests are constructed. In fact, each nest is made precisely to the size, shape and style with nest-building materials unique to each individual bird species and identifiable to that species. The same is true of each species’ nesting habitats and sites, which are almost always diagnostic to the bird that built it. Nests are impressive feats of architecture, construction and site selection by sweet little birds using only their beaks and their tiny bird brains.

But despite most of our birds’ widespread use of the cup nest type, this unroofed housing model has its drawbacks. It is exposed to the elements and to sharp-eyed predators. Even when tucked deep into the branches of trees, shrubs, grasses and reeds, they’re not always warm, dry, safe or secure. So, not surprisingly, a range of birds has figured out a way, or evolved, to get around these challenges. Their preferred accommodation is in a hole or cavity of a tree.

NEW BUILDS

The master cavity builders of the bird world, as expected by their name and revealed by their big beaks, are the woodpecker family. From the diminutive downy to the crow-sized pileated, this family of nine Ontario woodpecker species has been in the new build business for a long time. With a specially evolved head structure endowed with excellent shock absorbers, they tap, chip and hammer away at trees, opening holes and excavating cavities for nesting and roosting. They’re master woodworkers.

HOUSE HUNTERS

These woodpecker holes house a family for a season or two, and then, for various reasons, they often move on to another tree. This leaves their abandoned home up for grabs for a variety of potential new tenants. This is a good thing because, besides woodpeckers, a number of other species are also cavity nesters. Bluebirds, tree swallows, the ubiquitous house wrens, as well as increasingly larger species such as purple martins, great crested flycatchers, American kestrels, several species of ducks and a few species of owls are all in the market for an enclosed cavity for their nest site. However, these birds do not have the beak or the ability to excavate their own nest holes, so they have become the house hunters of the bird world. They go about the woods looking for vacant woodpecker holes. Abandoned downy diggings suit wrens nicely, while roomy pileated holes will suit a screech owl just fine. This symbiotic relationship creates a connected community of bird housing.

FIXER UPPER

There are a few cavity nesters that can fix up their own site. Chickadees and nuthatches are such enterprising species. All they need is a dead or dying tree, with perhaps a poppedout knot hole and a soft, decaying interior. They’ll take advantage of these run-down conditions and, in true fixer-upper fashion, gather the rotting wood chips with their weak little beaks and toss them out. Once these digs are dug out to their liking, they’ll start interior decorating with nesting materials like soft green mosses and fine dry grasses.

PREFABS

Despite all this industrious digging, there is still a housing crisis in the bird world. Even with woodpeckers providing new builds each year, the housing supply never quite keeps up with the demand. Inventory is always low. There are more cavity nesters than there are woodpeckers. Dead and dying trees are cut down by humans or eventually fall on their own, taking the nest sites with them. Competition is fierce, especially in preferred-habitat neighbourhoods, and many birds are outcompeted.

So, this is where humans can lend a helping hand. You can build a bird box. But build a better bird box. Properly constructed and placed, birdhouses can help fill the demand for good solid housing for cavity nesters. An incorrectly constructed box may lure our trusting feathered friends to their ultimate demise if they choose a box not built to their specifications. Their growing brood could suffer from crowded or poorly ventilated conditions or predation from an intruder who can access a too-large entry hole. Turns out there is a bird building code for each cavity nester’s house.

BUILDING CODE

A well-built bird box can provide a luxury home for birds if it is built to “code.” Nest boxes should be made from plans specific to the species using them. As with any good construction, proper structural design matters. Beware of the many cutesy birdhouses out there with their oversized nest holes and too-big or too-small boxes. Entrance hole diameters vary in size according to the species (one inch for a wren, two-and-a-quarter inches for a bluebird, etc.). They should be precise for the safety of the bird against intruders, including predators and bigger birds. And always lose the perch. Tree nest holes don’t have perches, and neither should your birdhouse. They actually impede the entry and exit of both the parent and the fledging young. Paint is optional but unnecessary and should be on the exterior only and be safe for animals. Most importantly, every bird box should be openable. They need to be cleaned out at the season’s end each fall. A box stuffed full of dusty old nesting material and perhaps bugs is not a healthy place for the next generation to move into. Regardless, it will not pass house inspection by the next potentially interested family. So, buy your bird boxes only from specialty stores or clubs that build them to proper specs, or build yours from plans from reputable websites! (Audubon, Nestwatch, Eastern Bluebird Society). And finally, pay attention to placement. The sites instructing you on building a better bird box will also tell you where to place the box, in what habitat, how high, how many, how close together, etc.

CONDOS

Two more housing types deserve mention here. We have a few specialty builds in our mix of bird housing. The purple martin, our largest swallow, shows a strong preference

– almost exclusive – for nesting in high-rise, condo-style housing. With their unique colonial style of nesting, they have adapted well to nesting in these condos. Lakeside property owners across southern Ontario have long been lending the unique purple martin a helping hand by erecting these substantial structures beside a lake or pond. Purple martins, acrobatic aerial insectivores, are welcome neighbours at homes and cottages for their voracious appetite for pesky bugs. But despite this attainable housing, a purple martin’s range is shrinking quickly in Ontario. Consider yourself lucky if you are still host to a colony.

HAPPY TRAILS

Finally, there is a success story to talk about. The brilliant blue eastern bluebird was once seriously declining across most of its range due to a lack of nest cavity sites. The formation of the North American Bluebird Society in the 1970s contributed to a successful rebound of its numbers by encouraging thousands of individuals and groups across North America to put up bluebird-specific nestboxes. These boxes were placed along roadside fences adjacent to farm pasture lands – the birds’ preferred habitat – sometimes forming lengthy trails of boxes down the roads. These trails are largely credited with bringing the beautiful “bluebird of happiness” back to our rural landscapes.

COMMUNITIES

There we have it, an entire range and style of homes for nesting birds throughout our own towns and countryside. Whether they be soft woven cups tucked under tree branches and leaves, in holes hammered out courtesy of the woodpecker family, in nestboxes, condos or trails put up by helpful humans, they form a great housing community of birds.
