TRENDS to try
Are current design trends right for you? It’s important to approach trendy design elements critically to evaluate if you like the trend enough to live with it for a while and whether it can be integrated successfully with your existing design, furnishings, architecture and site. For example, curved archways became very popular but were sometimes incorporated into spaces incongruent with the existing architecture, which caused a visual disconnect.
Here are some current themes in the industry – discern for yourself whether you’d like to give them a try.
MICRO/SECONDARY DWELLINGS
There are different reasons you might consider a secondary dwelling (if your property allows it). Affordability is a primary motive, as rental income can help pay your mortgage. Another popular arrangement is independent, intergenerational living – whether due to health circumstances or lifestyle choices. There are many creative designs to maximize efficiency in a small footprint.
BROWN
Possibly in response to environmental issues and sustainability or the cycle of design, shades of brown have seen a resurgence. Varying from camel to deep

chocolate, the rich, earthy hues offer a grounding, comforting and calming effect in a space. You can incorporate the colour through freestanding furniture, upholstery pieces, hardwood flooring, millwork or wall coverings and paint.
TERRACOTTA TILE

We’ve been seeing the return of terracotta tile for a while. Perhaps one could argue that it is best suited to Spanish and Mediterranean architecture. However, the earthy palette is versatile enough to integrate successfully into farmhouse and cottage styles. Terracotta tiles were traditionally handmade and sun-dried, known as “baked earth,” but even contemporary versions add instant old-world charm to a space while imbuing natural character.
CHUNKY GROUT
Grout lines are often minimized to avoid scrubbing and cleaning. However, some tiles, such as terracotta, should be installed with substantial grout lines to look authentic. Thicker grout lines are also used to create visual interest in custom tile layouts, where a larger band of grout delineates horizontally or vertically. The options for a unique pattern are endless, as long as your installer is on board!
TRIM & DOORS
There is a shift from white painted trim and doors. You will see a lot of solid-wood trim and doors stained to match the hardwood flooring. This is a classic and timeless approach and can be achieved successfully in modern and traditional spaces. An alternative is to paint trim and doors in a contrasting colour to the walls. A few years ago, we began to see subtle versions of this where light walls were paired with trim and doors a few shades darker in a greige hue. As more and more interiors are moving away from the all-white palette into more colour, contrasting trim is a way to add personality and impact, and we are seeing full-blown colour on mouldings, trims and doors. Tip: Try it in one room to see if you like it before you commit to a larger open-concept space!
TEXTURED WALLS & CEILINGS
The application/installation of Venetian plaster, lime wash, Roman clay, woven wall coverings and wood cladding adds interest to walls and ceilings instead of plain, painted drywall. It is important to have a professional installer for some of these materials and finishes (or a seasoned DIYer) – for example, hanging wall coverings on the ceiling is no simple task!
ARTISANAL
A downfall in design over the past couple of decades has been the homogeny of developments, easily replicated viral “of the moment” looks and the availability of mass-produced items. Although there are benefits to the above, the result can be that homes lack differentiation and look the same as the next. However, there is a real focus on personalization in design and this can be achieved by sourcing artisanal goods. Skilled craftspeople use traditional means and methods to create bespoke pieces in small batches or one-offs. This adds character and charm to your space while supporting the good people preserving uniquely human skills. OH

WINTER HIBERNATION
8 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME COSIER FOR THE SEASON

As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, there’s nothing quite like transforming your home into a warm, inviting winter haven. Whether you’re settling in by the fire, enjoying a hot cup of cocoa or hosting a gathering, here are some of my favourite ways to create the perfect atmosphere and embrace the beauty of the season.

1. Make An Impression With Your Entryway
Set the tone for the rest of your home and greet your guests with warmth from the moment they arrive on your doorstep. Extending the cosiness to the outside with a welcoming wreath or swag, a seasonal doormat and a few decorative touches can make a big impression.

2. Incorporate Natural Elements
Embrace the beauty of winter by bringing the outdoors in. Pine cones, evergreen branches and berries make for stunning and simple centrepieces and decorative touches. Display these natural elements in vases or as part of a table arrangement to evoke a sense of seasonal charm and warmth.

3. Create A Cosy Nook
Create a designated corner in your home that invites relaxation. Choose a comfortable chair, drape a soft throw over it and add a side table with a warm reading lamp. The perfect hideaway for reading, sipping a cocktail or simply unwinding after a long day!
Continued on page 38

4. Seasonal Scents
Introduce a variety of scents that evoke the winter season like cinnamon, pine and vanilla. Swap out everyday products like hand soaps for those with seasonal scents and for a natural fragrant infusion, simmer a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange peels on the stove.

5. Personalize With Seasonal Décor
The holidays are all about creating special moments and memories. Add personalized touches to make your space unique to you, such as family photos and personal ornaments. Switching your artwork for the season can also provide a refreshing change and make your home feel more festive.

6. Colour Palette
Lean into a warmer colour palette for winter. Deep rich tones like oxblood and burgundy feel festive and inviting for the holidays, without feeling overdone. These colours can be incorporated through textiles, décor and even wall art to create a cohesive and cosy look throughout your space.
7. Embrace Layered Textiles
Think plush throws, soft blankets and extra cushions. Opt for materials like wool, cashmere, velvet and faux fur to enhance the warmth and cosiness of your space. Layered rugs can add texture and warmth to your floors, making every step feel soft and luxurious.
8. Enhance Your Fireplace Setup
Make the fireplace the focal point of your living area. Arrange seating to face the fireplace and include a basket of logs and kindling for a touch of rustic charm. If you don’t have a working fireplace, you can achieve a similar effect with a cluster of candles or a decorative electric fireplace.
With these simple tips, you can easily transform your home into a winter haven perfect for quiet moments and intimate conversation. Embrace the winter season by making your home a sanctuary of warmth and comfort. Happy hibernating. OH

The Davies’ renovated living room is open and bathed in light with a wall of windows creating an updated and modern ambience. Above the fireplace, a frame television doubles as a piece of art.

attraction MAIN
When the youngest of their three daughters left home for university, Liz and Peter Davies realized it was the perfect opportunity to begin a new chapter in their home.
oORIGINALLY BUILT IN 2008 in the charming Old University area of Guelph, the Davies’ home beautifully filled the needs of their busy family life. “After 15 years without any real updates, we felt like our space needed a refresh to reflect our changing needs as empty nesters,” says Liz. They envisioned a more open main level, plenty of large windows and a reimagined main-floor primary bedroom.
The couple chose Sutcliffe Homes and Renovations to bring their vision to life after being impressed with the company’s portfolio and enthusiasm when discussing the renovation project. “Although our renovation project included a floor plan re-work, there were some elements we still liked and wanted to preserve,” says Liz. “Sutcliffe was extremely receptive to this concept, which included things like updating our current great room built-ins with new paint, shelves and lighting, and refinishing and repainting our beautiful coffered ceiling. The team was excellent at coming up with budget-friendly solutions to updating some of these current elements, so we had more budget for big ticket items like new windows, flooring and a fabulous new kitchen.”

Kyle Carolus, president and owner of Sutcliffe Homes and Renovations, says the timeline was swift, with construction starting in May 2023 and concluding by November 2023. “Liz knew what she wanted and was well-organized, which allowed us to pre-plan and preorder everything needed, keeping the construction schedule running smoothly and helping us with our planning and organization.”
The home was restructured to fit the new layout and floor plan. The location of the kitchen and living room stayed the same, but much of the main floor was reconfigured to create a more cohesive primary suite. The formal dining room was removed, and the mudroom and powder room were redesigned for better flow into the kitchen and surrounding areas. “The living room exterior wall became a glass wall to really appreciate the greenery of the backyard and bring as much light in as possible,” says Kyle. “Those same details in that rear wall were then carried through the rest of the windows, doors and interior glass partitions in the home.” Security system by Slinger Solutions
The built-in shelving framing the fireplace and coffered ceiling are standout features of the home that were beautifully preserved during the renovation.

“We could not be happier with our newly-renovated space. It’s just as I had envisioned it – maybe even better!”
To the left of the entryway, the glass wall-style continues, creating an open and refined workspace. OPPOSITE LEFT: An entry console across from Peter’s office is simple and clean-lined, allowing the board-and-batten wall panelling to shine.

Kyle says the overall project went smoothly. “Liz had a great vision, and we worked well together through the whole process. As a result, selections and finishes were planned and organized well in advance to support the construction schedule and kept everything flowing smoothly.”
Liz says the planning and renovation process with the Sutcliffe team was outstanding. “Not only are they extremely knowledgeable, but they are extremely responsive and great at communicating, which is often a challenge in the building process.”
The result embodies a style Kyle describes as modern transitional, featuring abundant natural light and striking design choices that effortlessly blend casual elegance with a sense of occasion. “The style is really Liz’s, and her touches and thoughts are all over every part of the construction,” he says. “She served as her own designer and decorator, so we worked quite closely on every aspect on the front end, and then worked to bring those visions to life.”
Liz says that although she is not an interior designer by trade, it is her passion. “I’ve worked on multiple large new builds, renovations and remodels in the past 25 years – my husband says I always need a project! So I went into this project confidently, with enough background and design sense to deal directly with Sutcliffe’s building and kitchens teams.”
Entering the home, the feeling is both modern and classic. To the left of the entry, Peter’s office is swathed in Benjamin Moore Quarry Rock, creating a dramatic, upscale space that is cosy but visually connected to the rest of the home. On the right is Liz’s office area, featuring a desk that overlooks the picturesque greenery. The space is accented with art by local artist Beth Wild, adding a touch of whimsy and a palette of subdued colours. Continued on

Black-framed windows extend into the dining area, seamlessly connecting the indoors with the outdoors and providing an elegant backdrop for a spacious dining table. OPPOSITE TOP: The kitchen island offers ample space and extra seating for six. To the left of the fridge, a cleverly-concealed prep pantry is disguised behind cupboard doors, maximizing both functionality and style.

To the right of the front entry, the renovation includes a comfy nook for Liz to work in, with art from local artist Beth Wild adding elegant visual interest.

Hardwood flooring throughout from Bigelow Flooring provides a warm and refined foundation to the space. Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee on the walls and ceilings is crisp and adapts to the light brought in through the stunning glass wall of blackframed windows from Bavarian Window Works, which overlook the Davies’ private, peaceful tree-lined backyard. In the expansive living room, coffered ceilings, elegant built-ins and a black-framed fireplace from Bast Home Comfort create a timeless charm.
ABOVE: Just off the primary bedroom, the laundry room features a chic cupboard area, providing an ideal space for organizing clothes and preparing laundry with ease.
ABOVE RIGHT: The cloakroom area off the garage has been transformed into a stylish nook, thoughtfully designed to accommodate all the essentials of daily life. RIGHT: The powder room impresses with stunning wallpaper, luxurious porcelain countertops and stylish gold accents, elevating this small space.

Sutcliffe Kitchens design consultant Lisa Fish worked closely with Liz to create the open and polished kitchen with streamlined floor-to-ceiling cabinets and pristine, honed porcelain island and countertops from Stonex Granite and Quartz. Black island chairs and black fixtures from Watermarks Boutique provide a striking contrast to the lightcoloured space, adding a bold touch of drama. Stainless steel appliances from Canadian Appliance Source add a bit of bling to the largely matte-toned space. Next to the kitchen, the dining area comfortably accommodates a large table, making it perfect for family gatherings and get-togethers. “The kitchen island also seats up to six people so it’s been really helpful for larger gatherings,” says Liz. A walkthrough pantry features a clever hidden door that when closed looks like cupboard doors. A pretty powder room off the kitchen completes this practical, beautiful renovation.

The primary en suite is a luxurious retreat with soaker tub, dramatic statement chandelier and sleek glass
shower enclosure.

The renovation also included dual closets, and a laundry room accessible directly from the primary suite. Roman shades from Budget Blinds Kitchener complete the serene ambience.
The couple’s en suite bath is one of Liz’s favourite parts of the reno. A deep soaker tub sets the mood for a calming escape, while a statement chandelier above adds dramatic appeal. Reeded walnut cabinets and vanity were a specific request from Liz, and Sutcliffe went to great lengths to ensure they were perfectly executed.
Liz and Peter have been living in their renovated home for about a year now, and Liz says their appreciation for the space and the success of the process has genuinely deepened. “We could not be happier with our newly-renovated space. It’s just as I had envisioned it – maybe even better!” OH

How To Style An Enchanting WOODLAND TABLESCAPE

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse! Christmas critters have always had a certain charm. Embrace your whimsical side in an elegant way this season by creating a beautiful woodland table setting that will delight both adults and children at your gathering. From on-trend dinnerware and unforgettable flatware to rustic centrepieces and festive accessories, this tablescape is appropriate for winter dinner parties even after holiday entertaining ends.

EMBRACE NATURAL ELEMENTS
The woodland style has a timeless quality because of its connection to nature. When you’re deciding on items to include, opt for an organic feel with textiles like wood and linen in earthy colours like browns, greens and neutrals. Start by laying the foundation with a natural table runner, woven placemats, bark coasters, fresh or faux greenery, pine cones and handmade beeswax candles for a magical, moonlit glow.

TABLEWARE FIT FOR A FOREST FEAST
Add contemporary details to your woodland table. Choosing black dinner plates with a matte finish will modernize the natural look and provide an unexpected alternative to traditional white dinnerware. Plus, black has proven to be a top-trending colour selection in home décor this year. Pair your plates with a matte-black mug for continuity. Letting some personality shine through with fauna-inspired salad plates that complement the matte-black anchor pieces certainly won’t boar any of your guests! Gold flatware with black handles will complete one thoughtful aesthetic with a hint of gold creating that warm, special feeling you get during the holidays. For glassware, select a smoky, tinted colour that reflects the forest and is reminiscent of antique or vintage glass.

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY CRITTERS

THE CENTRE OF ATTENTION
This is your chance to flex your creativity and build a unique centrepiece for your table. You’ll need boards for sharing small bites or charcuterie, chunky wood candle holders, themed tealight holders, winter-inspired metal lanterns, glass trees, fairy lights, fir candle rings, sprays and a vase. Sprawl these accessories down the middle of the table or curate them in a circle if you have a round table. Ensure everyone seated has something interesting to look at, like adorable countryside animals, preferably in little sweaters.

Think of all the animals that roam the forest across Canada and then find those figurines to snuggle into your centrepiece in various ways. Felted mice are as abundant as ever in gift stores, including charming dessert-specific mice that can be quietly added as a surprise during the final course of the evening. Planters that look like hedgehogs, clip-on birds or a moose in a cosy knit hat – the more the merrier! You can also incorporate critters into your paper napkin selection or individual edible table treats in the form of moulded chocolates.

By including these elements, you’ll achieve a cohesive and playful woodland tablescape that brings the beauty of nature indoors. It’s easy to adapt the setting to fit casual or formal occasions while maintaining the underlying charm. Just keep your eye on those critters! OH

BREAD PUDDING WITH Spiked Sauce
RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JENELLE MCCULLOCH
This classic Bread Pudding with Spiked Sauce is the ultimate comfort dessert. Soft, custardy bread pudding is baked to golden perfection and drizzled with a warm, boozy rum sauce. It’s the perfect indulgence for cosy winter nights or holiday celebrations.

INGREDIENTS
BREAD PUDDING
2 cups milk
2 Tbsp unsalted butter, plus more for buttering dishes
¹/³ cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
1 loaf of brioche bread, cut into cubes
½ cup raisins (optional)
SPIKED SAUCE
½ cup sugar
1 Tbsp allpurpose flour
Pinch of salt
1 cup whole milk
¼ cup cream
2 egg yolks
2 Tbsp butter in several pieces
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
2-3 Tbsp rum or bourbon
INSTRUCTIONS
BREAD PUDDING
Preheat oven to 350°F and grease six 8-oz ramekins or one 9 by 13-inch baking dish.
In a saucepan, whisk together milk, butter and sugar. Heat over medium heat until melted. Once cooled, whisk in eggs, cinnamon, vanilla and pinch of salt.
Spread the cubed bread in the greased baking dish or in ramekins. If using, mix raisins into the bread. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, pressing the bread down gently to ensure it’s fully soaked. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the centre is set.
SPIKED SAUCE
In a saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour and pinch of salt. While whisking, add milk, cream and then the egg yolks.
Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, whisking almost constantly, paying attention that no build-up happens along the bottom edges of the pan. Continue to simmer gently for several minutes until sauce is thickened and coats the back of a spoon.
Remove from heat, and while continuing to whisk, add butter, vanilla and rum or bourbon (if using). Push sauce through a strainer.

Winter can be as long as six months in parts of northern Ontario or four months in southern Ontario. Either way, winter takes up a good portion of our year, so it’s good garden planning to incorporate elements that add winter interest.
Just because our gardens are dormant in colder months doesn’t mean it can’t offer colour, texture and structure even in the heart of winter. A winter garden can transform your landscape into a yearround place of beauty.
CREATE GOOD BONES
Good bones in a garden are important at any time of year, but especially important in the winter when the structural elements of the garden take centre stage. Without the distraction of lush foliage and beautiful flowers, the garden’s design becomes more apparent. This makes it crucial to focus on the layout and form of the garden. Pathways, stone walls and garden ornaments should be strategically placed to guide the eye and provide focal points.
Obelisks, trellises and arbours, even when bare of vines, can create interesting silhouettes against the winter sky or shadows on the snow.

SHRUBS & TREES
The foundation of any winter garden lies in the careful selection of plants that are either evergreen or have striking winter interest. Evergreens, when grouped or used as hedging, can define spaces, create microclimates and shelter your feathered friends. Height is another important consideration. Incorporating vertical elements, such as tall shrubs or small trees, adds dimension to the garden. Evergreen plants, such as cedar, pine, boxwood and yew retain their foliage throughout the year, providing muchneeded colour and structure. Deciduous trees and shrubs with interesting bark, branching patterns or perennials with interesting seed pods are good candidates for a winter garden. The red or yellow stems of dogwood provide a stark contrast against the winter snow, while the peeling bark of birch or Paperbark Maple adds texture and visual intrigue.

GRASSES & LIGHTS
Ornamental grasses can provide great winter interest not only with their form, but they create the element of movement as the wind blows through them. With the shorter days and longer nights of winter, lighting plays a crucial role in the winter garden. Wellplaced twinkle lights can transform the garden, highlighting key features and creating a magical atmosphere. Solar-powered lights are an energy-efficient option, though their effectiveness can be limited in areas with prolonged overcast skies or a lot of snow. LED lights, on the other hand, provide a reliable source of illumination, don’t use a lot of energy and are available in a range of colours to suit different garden styles.

Don’t forget winter containers. With some evergreen branches, colourful twigs, dried seed pods and a set of twinkle lights, you have a miniature winter landscape in a container at the front entrance to provide beauty and light every time you enter your house.
MAINTENANCE
Maintaining a winter garden requires less effort than a summer one, but it is not without its tasks. Regularly clearing pathways of snow and ice is essential for safety and to keep the garden accessible. Pruning should be done judiciously, particularly for evergreens, to maintain their shape and encourage healthy growth. If your area is subject to heavy snow loads, tying up cedars will help prevent them from splaying open. You also might need to shake off the snow from weighted-down branches. Mulching around the base of plants can help protect roots from extreme cold and frost heave.
VISITORS
Winter gardens are also an opportunity to attract wildlife. Bird feeders and water features can provide food and hydration when natural resources are scarce, making your garden a haven for local wildlife. Look for a small water heater in your birding or online store that keeps water in a birdbath from freezing.
A winter garden offers beauty and interest during a season when most gardens are in hibernation. By carefully selecting plants, focusing on structure and form, incorporating thoughtful lighting and maintaining the garden with care, you can create an outdoor space that remains vibrant and inviting year round. Whether blanketed in snow or frosted with ice, a welldesigned winter garden will ensure you have beauty in the face of winter’s chill. OH

HOW TO CREATE A GUEST ROOM THEY’LL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE

STORY LINDSAY THORNTON PHOTOGRAPHY NAT KAY
When it comes to hosting overnight visitors, a guest bedroom should be more than just a place to sleep. It should be a haven of comfort and warmth that makes your guests feel pampered and welcome. Here’s how you can create a guest bedroom so cosy and inviting your guests will find it hard to leave.
Creature Comforts
The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, especially in a guest room where comfort is paramount. Start by investing in a quality mattress that provides the perfect balance of support and softness. Even if your mattress is on the firmer side, a plush mattress topper can add a layer of comfort that feels like sleeping on a cloud. When it comes to bedding, think layers. Start with high-thread-count cotton sheets, as they are breathable and soft against the skin. Add a lightweight blanket or quilt, and top it off with a cosy duvet or comforter. Be sure to offer a variety of pillows – some firmer, some softer – so your guests can choose what works best for them.
A few decorative pillows and a throw blanket at the foot of the bed add a touch of style while offering extra warmth on chilly nights.
TIP: As much as we designers love pillows, don’t put too many on the guest bed, as most guests can get overwhelmed when trying to put them all back in your preferred position! We love a lumbar pillow or two or three accent pillows in a guest suite.

Create the Right Ambience
The secret to making anyone feel at home is to make everyone feel at home. Neutral colours and finishes go a long way in creating serenity for many.
Lighting also plays a crucial role in setting the right mood. I start with a soft, warm overhead light for general illumination. Supplement this ambient lighting with table lamps on the nightstands or install wall-mounted sconces on either side of the bed. These provide focused light for reading without being too harsh. Choose lamps with dimmers, which allow your guests to adjust the light to their liking. A small nightlight can also be a thoughtful addition, helping your guests navigate the room in the dark.

Thoughtful Staples
Take a cue from a memorable hotel stay, and strive to pamper your guests. Outfit the room with some basics: fresh towels and washcloths, placed either in the room or in the adjacent bathroom. Extra pillows and blankets should be easily accessible, perhaps stored in a decorative basket or ottoman. Consider adding a pair of cosy slippers or a plush robe for your guests to use during their stay. These small touches can make a big difference, especially on cold mornings. A water carafe and glasses on the nightstand, along with a few snacks can make visitors feel at home when they’re staying at yours.

Engage the Senses
Scents play a significant role in creating a welcoming atmosphere. A lightly scented candle or an essential oil diffuser can fill the room with calming aromas like lavender, vanilla or sandalwood, which are known to promote relaxation and sleep. Be sure to choose scents that are subtle and not overwhelming.
Seasonal fresh flowers always elevate the room, adding both a visual and olfactory appeal. A small bouquet on the nightstand or dresser brightens the space. If fresh flowers aren’t practical, consider a small potted plant.
Finishing Touches
Finally, consider some “extras” that will make your guest bedroom truly special. A selection of books or magazines on the nightstand offers guests something to read as they wind down for the night. A charging station for phones and other devices is a modern convenience that will be appreciated. Personal touches like a framed photo or a small piece of artwork can make the room feel more like home. If space allows, a comfortable chair or bench adds a place to sit and relax, further enhancing the room’s cosy vibe.

Creating a cosy guest bedroom is all about attention to detail. If done right, your visitors may never want to leave. But when they do, you’ll have a stunning space to indulge in, without ever leaving the comfort of home. OH

A MODERN BACKSPLIT
OOnce a staple of the 1970s, split-level homes are back in vogue. Celebrated for an abundance of square footage cleverly designed to fit compact lots, the open, airy floor plans and natural light are a draw for those who aspire to remodel.
When the homeowners chose to renovate their residence in the charming southwest corner of Guelph, they hired husband/wife team Jasmine Koblik and Marc Esposito of Otis Interiors Design & Build to transform their space from dull and dated to fresh and modern. “We like to have our friends and family over, and the space is very conducive to that,” says the homeowner. “We like to cook and entertain, and it’s nice to have an upgraded kitchen.”

The living room is bright and inviting, providing the perfect space for the homeowners to relax and recharge.
OPPOSITE TOP: The renovation opened the main level, enhancing sight-lines and allowing natural light to flood the space. OPPOSITE LEFT: The entry has been beautifully transformed, featuring light flooring, bright walls and warm wood accents that illuminate the space. The graphic linear square windows in the front door pay homage to the home’s 1970s origins, adding a distinctive touch of character.
STORY GINA MAKKAR PHOTOGRAPHY JASON HARTOG

The Otis team managed the design and construction of the main floor, primary bathroom and laundry room. While Marc manages the construction of projects, Jasmine carries out the design. “From the get-go, the homeowners had a very strong style preference toward clean, contemporary lines and the texture of contemporary living with layered neutrals,” says Jasmine. “The materials really come alive and are the base and the art of the project.”
The homeowners were inspired by Scandi style, and Jasmine says when done right, it doesn’t have to feel sterile to be modern. “It can feel clean and minimal but have so much warmth. That’s really what we wanted to hold on to.”
Jasmine incorporated unique elements throughout by focusing on the details in each individual space in a way that still allowed the floor plan to flow and maintain continuity.
In the primary bedroom, the removal of a connecting door made way for a larger double vanity in the bathroom. A built-in niche runs the length and is backlit and accessible from both the shower and the soaker tub. “In the evening you can dim the light or change it to a different colour. It’s a really pretty feature,” Jasmine says. The black framed-glass shower hugs the niche to create an integrated look, and a blend of materials brings the space to life.

ABOVE: The husband/wife team of Jasmine Koblik and Marc Esposito of Otis Interiors Design & Build transformed this classic 70s backsplit into a modern family home. LEFT: A built-in corner fireplace is cleanlined and modern, creating a focal point in the large space.
A stacked staircase means plenty of railings. To maintain the minimalistic design, a waterfall railing with simple black spindles eliminated the need for traditional newel posts. The railing cascades gently to meet the hardwood floor for a clean transition.
In the kitchen, small modifications make a big impact. “You don’t need to change the footprint of a room to make a drastic change,” says Jasmine. “We made micro-changes because we didn’t have the option to borrow space from surrounding rooms.” Upper cabinets that abutted the window were removed to create more space. Custom cabinetry from Paragon Kitchens was thoughtfully laid out to meet organization and storage needs. “You get this sense of expansive, bright and airy with a lot of warmth that surrounds everything,” Jasmine says. This compact, elegant kitchen features a cosy breakfast bar and ample counter and cabinet space, making it both functional and stylish.

“YOU GET THIS SENSE OF EXPANSIVE, BRIGHT AND AIRY WITH A LOT OF WARMTH THAT SURROUNDS EVERYTHING.”
The couple hesitated when Jasmine presented a deep blue stone countertop with glowing copper flecks from Cosentino that ties into the details in the appliances by Café. “It pulls it all together,” says Jasmine. “They were a little nervous about it, but I knew it was the right call. It’s very grounding because we used a lot of wood materials and needed to inject something different so it wouldn’t fall flat. It’s soft, natural and very clean.”
In the living room, the corner fireplace clad in heavy fieldstone was left in place and given new life with a microcement facade. “I don’t normally like corner fireplaces but in this case, it worked well for the room,” she says. The facade encases the insert from Fergus Fireplace and stretches to the ceiling and adds texture. “Because we were going for a minimal look, we needed something to anchor and to draw attention and have a presence in the room.”
When starting each project, the team develops complete floor and mechanical plans to ensure they have a strong blueprint to work with. Jasmine says they also develop blueprints for elements like cabinetry features to help visualize the project. With the functionality in place, the team moves to estimates and a full design presentation, including the design and proposed materials for each room, right down to curtains from It’s Curtains for You. “The vast majority of our decisions are made upfront before construction begins, and that means we can line everything up against our schedule,” explains Jasmine. “It gives the homeowners more peace of mind knowing they won’t have to make these decisions in crunch time in the middle of the construction.”

Jasmine says a solid plan also helps uphold the intention of the project and facilitates better decision-making if the need arises during construction. “There’s magic in the planning.”
When a project is underway, the team conducts milestone walkthroughs at each stage of the construction. “The homeowners find it valuable because they can understand and see everything at that stage before moving to the next one,” says Jasmine.
The team also maintains a physical presence on-site during the construction phase to troubleshoot, work through details and ensure the proper execution. “I really appreciate that Jasmine and the team took much of the burden off us,” says the homeowner. “She oversaw all aspects of the reno and was there day-to-day. We felt she was very involved and oversaw everything closely. It really helped us to trust them.”
With updates in place, what had become old-fashioned is fashionably new again.
“It was great working with Jasmine,” says the homeowner. “I showed her some pictures of the style I liked, and she was really able to capture the look and feel of the style I was looking for. It looks better than I could have imagined. We’re very pleased.” OH

CREATE A STOCKING
Filled With Santa-Approved Household Gifts

Stockings can be one of the trickiest parts of holiday gifting! Why not try something different this year and curate a collection of small household items rather than picking up the usual stick of deodorant, a pair of socks and a candy cane? Here are 10 useful gifts to tuck into a stocking, perfect for a partner, parent, friend or young adult.

Travel-sized tech kit

This item solves a problem the recipient didn’t know they had. The tin container includes a bottle of screencleaner spray, microfibre cloth, cable wrap and charging cable, and can easily be stashed into a purse, backpack, carry-on bag or glove compartment. It’s also a handy little kit to keep in a guest room at home or the cottage.

This jolly cup is a welcome addition to anyone’s pantry, perfect for when that extra jolt of caffeine is needed after one too many ugly sweater parties. Suitable for beyond the holiday season, it adds a bold pop of red to any kitchen.

Described as featuring biscotti fur, a frothy cream lid, chunky corduroy holder and toffee corduroy boots, this grande is a stylish conversation starter.
5
Holiday housewares
Look for cute seasonal items that are easy to pack. Dishtowels printed with the recipe for a specialty holiday spritz can be rolled and stuffed into the stocking or used to wrap the more fragile gifts. Spirited cocktail napkins and mini tree-shaped bowls are useful for entertaining and complement the main theme.

7 8
For the eco-conscious recipient, consider this zero-waste cloth that replaces paper towels and harsh cleaners. Simply add water, and it effortlessly lifts grime from almost any surface! It’s lint-free, streak-free and perfect for windows, stainless steel, countertops, electronics, vehicles, and even the mantel where this stocking will be hung.
Not your average kitchen scrubbers
Cleaning products might sound boring, but not in this stocking! It doesn’t get any better than something named the World’s Best. If your recipient loves their kitchen to sparkle at all times, include a scrubber appropriate for use on non-stick cookware, stovetops and even vegetables.

9
Portable knife sharpener
This innovative kitchen gadget, endorsed by celebrity chefs, comes with a 10-year guarantee. It sharpens straight and serrated blades while keeping your hands safely protected – ideal for any home cook who spends a lot of time chopping.
6
Personalized multi-tool
The elves put in extra effort to find a purposeful gift with a personal touch that resonates with the recipient. This guitarshaped multi-tool is both thoughtful and practical, perfect for music lovers or musicians who appreciate a versatile tool for small household tasks like tightening screws, cutting or opening bottles.

10
Elevated snacks
A food item is essential for every stocking. Skip the annual chocolate bar and opt for something more comforting and indulgent. Traditional, buttery shortbread cookies with a hint of maple crunch and a delightful salted-caramel hot chocolate mix will satisfy all those sweet seasonal cravings. OH

Festive AND FUNCTIONAL DINING ROOMS
The dining area is somewhat of a conundrum. In many newer homes, it has been swallowed up by the open-concept main floor, with cooking, dining and living combined. Meanwhile, in older homes, the formal dining room often goes unused except for the occasional birthday, anniversary or holiday, when it gets dusted off and dressed to impress. I love the indulgence of a dedicated, stylish dining area, both in terms of the space itself and all that it brings. Whether yours is a dedicated room or a designated nook, here are some tips to ensure it’s ready for company, both during the holidays and every other day of the year!

DINING ROOM LAYOUTS FOR A FUNCTIONAL AND FABULOUS SPACE
A great dining area starts with the layout, to ensure the room can handle the hustle and bustle while still providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. If yours is an open-plan home, position your dining table in a way that naturally flows from the kitchen or living area. This setup allows for easy movement between cooking and socializing, ensuring you can stay engaged with guests while preparing meals.
In homes with separate dining rooms, focus on creating a balanced space. Place the dining table centrally, allowing enough room around it for chairs to be pulled out comfortably. Ensure there is ample space to accommodate traffic, especially if the space will include a buffet or serving area.
A rectangular or oval table can accommodate more guests, while a round table can create a more intimate setting. If you frequently host large gatherings, consider an extendable table or add a second smaller table to accommodate extra guests.
A sideboard or buffet table along one wall can serve as a dedicated area for food and drinks. This keeps the main dining table clutter-free and allows guests to help themselves without disrupting the flow of conversation. And when you’re not hosting, it serves as storage space. Place chairs or benches around the table with a mix of seating options to cater to different preferences and to create a more dynamic and inviting arrangement. If space allows, create a separate seating area with comfortable chairs or a small sofa for guests to relax before or after the meal.
FOCUS!
A well-chosen focal point not only draws the eye but also sets the tone and mood, making it a more enjoyable place for meals and gatherings. It can help define the style and personality of the space, whether it’s modern, traditional or eclectic. To create an effective focal point, start by identifying the most prominent area in the room, such as the wall facing the entrance or the ceiling above the dining table. Consider adding a bold piece of art, which is a wonderful way to add non-committal colour and a dramatic effect. Simply swapping out the artwork can transform the entire room’s ambience when you’re ready for a change.
I love the element of surprise in a room, so think beyond the usual, like a bold ceiling. Draw the eye upward with an eye-catching colour or a graphic paper to add texture and dimension. Incorporating architectural elements such as coffered ceilings, exposed beams or tray ceilings can also add a sense of grandeur and elegance.
Balance is key, so ensure that the focal point complements the overall décor without overwhelming it.

LIGHTING
Lighting has a three-fold purpose in the dining area: to illuminate for function, to act as a focal point and to set the mood. In this space, it can be bright and joyful, warm and romantic, dark and dramatic, or it can alternate between all three, depending on the function. For this reason, dimmers and layers of lighting are a must.
A statement chandelier or pendant light above the dining table serves as a focal point, adding a touch of elegance and festivity. Wall sconces or floor and table lamps can provide additional illumination, highlighting different areas of the room and adding depth. Candles or string lights added to the tabletop or buffet create a cosy, enchanting atmosphere.
Whether hosting large gatherings on festive occasions or casual everyday dinners, having a dedicated dining area also helps to carve out a time and a place to indulge in good food and great company, without any distractions. OH

HANDSTONE FURNITURE
In this day and age, not many things are built to last. But Handstone Furniture isn’t one of them. We refuse to compromise. It’s been that way since we started in 1999 as a one-man woodworking shop. Today we remain a familyowned Canadian manufacturer of custom-made, solid wood furniture. We still hand-select the kiln-dried walnut, cherry, maple and red oak hardwoods we work with. We continually invest in adding state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to our facilities. And we never forget that the only thing equal to the precision and accuracy of modern manufacturing process is the technique and attention to detail that comes from having a reverence for old world craftsmanship. We practice lean manufacturing methods and each piece is built-to-order. Handstone Furniture is different. It takes a little longer to build. You’ll wait a little longer to get it delivered. But we think you’ll agree...its lasting beauty is worth it.

festive FELT TREES
PROJECT AND PHOTOGRAPHY TARA CHATTELL
Add some colour and whimsy to your holiday accoutrements with these easy-to-make felt trees.

TOOLS & MATERIALS
Felt sheets in colour of choice
Paper cones in sizes of your choosing*
Card stock for leaf template
Fabric pen or pencil
Fabric scissors
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
*You can purchase premade papier mâché cones or make your own with poster board.
HOW-TO
On a piece of card stock, draw a leaf in any shape you’d like; we’ve done a teardroplike shape. Cut leaf out with scissors. This will be your template.
Place your leaf template on a piece of felt and trace around it with a fabric pen. Repeat this as many times as needed to fill the felt sheet. Cut out the leaf shapes from the felt using scissors. Repeat this step with multiple sheets of felt in different colours until you think you have enough to cover your paper cones. You can always cut more if needed.
Using a hot glue gun, begin gluing your felt leaves around the base of a paper cone. Position the first row of leaves so they hang over the base of the cone by ¼ inch or so. This will ensure the cone is fully covered and allow the bottom leaves to flare out around the base of the tree when it’s standing.

Begin gluing the second row of leaves, being sure to overlap and offset the leaves in the first row. Continue gluing rows of leaves until the entire cone is covered.

To cover the tip of the cone, cut a few leaves in the same shape as the others at about half the size. Glue the smaller leaves at the tip of the cone, similar to the other rows.

Repeat the above process until all of your paper cones are covered with felt leaves.
Now, find a place in your home to display your colourful trees for the holidays and enjoy! OH

NET-ZERO HOMES AND THE HOUSING CRISIS
It’s no secret that Ontario is in the midst of a serious and extended housing crisis, especially in its largest cities. Premier Doug Ford has adopted a target of building 1.5 million homes in a 10-year span, a goal recommended by the government-commissioned Housing Affordability Task Force.
To realize that ambition, the Ontario government’s 2024 Provincial Planning Statement (PPS 2024) is designed to simplify and unify previous land-use planning policies into a single, housing-focused framework to accelerate the development of much-needed homes in Ontario.
We’re also experiencing climate change. With home construction and operation resulting in a heavy carbon footprint, the question is whether environmentally sustainable, net-zero homes will figure prominently in the residential properties constructed in the coming years.
Let’s begin with what defines net-zero homes. The name says it all. Net-zero homes consume as much energy as they produce. To achieve net zero, these homes must meet three main requirements:
They are energy efficient to operate, reaching a perfect equation of energy usage and generation.
They include renewable energy systems, such as solar panels or geothermal.
They lower energy requirements using special insulation, windows and so forth.
The goal is to minimize the carbon footprint of home ownership and promote sustainability. But it’s not just about the environmental benefits. There are immediate benefits for occupants, including better indoor air quality, a less drafty environment and more even temperatures throughout the home. Overall, net-zero homes provide greater comfort and healthier living than a conventional house.
“Net-zero homes are good for your cost of living, the environment, your standard of living and provide good value for your asset,” explains Kevin Rankin, general manager of Watercolour Westport by Land Ark Homes, a net-zero development in eastern Ontario. “People think you must give something up to have a netzero home, but you don’t. You really can have your cake and eat it too.”
But, let’s get real – for homeowners it all comes down to cost, right?
Affordability is an undeniable problem in the real estate market. This is a reality everywhere in Ontario but particularly in the Greater Toronto Area. For this reason, some home buyers might balk at the higher price of a net-zero home.
“Net-zero homes are more expensive, but the additional cost is incremental, usually about five per cent,” explains Rankin. “What people fail to consider is the savings in the operating costs of owning a net-zero home versus a conventional one.”
Energy costs are a huge component of monthly home expenses. With a net-zero home, these expenses are dramatically decreased. The return on investment is immediate and considering the five per cent increase in the purchase price is spread out over decades, it’s easy to see the financial appeal of net-zero homes.
“The reality is it’s a significant mindset shift to ask to spend five per cent more for a better-quality home,” Rankin says. “While builders are slowly moving in the direction of net zero, as an industry we’re a long way away from it.”
Of the thousands of homes being built in Ontario to meet demand, only a relative handful will be net zero. The focus is on cooling red-hot housing markets across the country, which have seen price increases fuelled by low inventory and high competition. Environmental concerns, except when mandated by government regulations, are simply not a priority for many homebuilders.
But Rankin doesn’t believe it’s fair to blame developers. After all, builders aren’t making boatloads of money – studies have shown the average net profit margin is around 10 per cent and shrinking as various levels of government add red tape and increase fees.
Instead, he maintains it’s simply about demand.
“Net zero is a niche of the market. Only one in 10 people who come into our showrooms do so because of the net-zero concept. Most come for the location or lifestyle,” he says. “Most people are simply blissfully unaware that net-zero homes are an option. Until consumers know it’s possible, they won’t ask. And until the demand increases, developers won’t build them.”
The housing industry, however, has not been standing still. The building code has already mandated sustainability in an industry slow to change.
A further layer of complexity comes from the fact that Canada is facing a shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry (there were 82,000 unfilled positions across the country in June, according to Statistics Canada). Deviating from standard construction practices –and net-zero homes certainly incorporate techniques and systems that deviate from the norm – makes it even more challenging to find skilled tradespeople.
Of the 1.5 million homes to be built by the end of the decade, the number of netzero homes will be in the thousands.
“The net-zero home concept is basically where EV cars were 10 years ago,” Rankin says. “The technology is there, it’s the future, but the bottom-up demand needs to grow before builders will embrace it.” OH

Victorian RESTORATION
Jill Cummings expertly crafted a living room that beautifully embodies the warm, earthy forest theme she envisioned.

When Jill Cummings, owner of Cummings Nest, wanted to move her family from their country property to a home in Guelph’s historic St. George’s Park area, she was thrilled that Kensworth House, a heritage property built in 1885, was on the market. The lushly treed neighbourhood spoke to her love of nature. It was close to schools and loved ones, and it was a historical treasure that was desperately in need of a renovation and vision to restore it to a grand single-family home.
STORY MERRILYN PATTERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY JASON HARTOG
The home’s entry is open and bathed in light, with the family pup proudly serving as a welcoming presence.

Family dog Rusty approves!

sSHE AND HER HUSBAND DAVID bought the house, and Jill began a labour of love that married her two passions: love of family and design-renovation.
Jill knew Brian Andres of BAC Renovations would be the perfect general contractor to work on the extensive restoration of the grand old lady. Luckily, Brian had an opening in his schedule and an intuitive and harmonious working relationship began.
“I wanted someone who would understand my vision for an updated family-functional home, but who would also incorporate and preserve the heritage elements,” Jill says, as well as a crew that could handle the structural elements and scale of this job, like the 18-foot steel beam they installed in the kitchen. They also replaced all the floor joists in the original house.
Features of the original home were incorporated throughout to create a sense of continuity and history. The shape of the arches over the windows was copied in the newly expanded archway between the kitchen and the living room. Jill enlisted Greg Hartmann of Hartmann Windows & Doors to replace many of the windows. “Greg was a master at sourcing the windows that matched the original ones,” says Jill. “He paid meticulous attention to detail.”
A coffered ceiling was installed in the family room to mimic the original plaster mouldings. Ceilings and medallions were painted by JDR Homes Finishes. They chose flooring and accents with materials that were used in 1885, including red oak floors, natural stone and brass elements. The herringbone pattern on the floor in the dining area is a nod to days gone by. Floor and tile materials were supplied by Bigelow Flooring

LEFT: The living room is the heart of the home, seamlessly blending muted colours and natural materials to create a casual and chic atmosphere. BELOW: Arched walkways are a hallmark of the renovation, offering a classic nod to the home's historical charm.

The original kitchen, which was small and awkward, has been turned into a pantry providing tons of storage. A wall was removed between the kitchen and living room to open the area and create a clear sight-line through the new addition into the existing family room, uniting the spaces and giving a feeling of togetherness.
An oversize island was a necessity for the family and friends to gather. The kitchen countertops were supplied by The Countertop Depot. The kitchen island is topped in MSI –Calacatta Miraggio Duo, chosen for its durability and classic elegance. Warm neutral tones add a modern update to the home’s heritage roots. Stunning polished brass faucets are the jewelry for the island. Tastefully selected light fixtures highlight the original plaster mouldings. Maple Shaker-style cabinetry sourced from Sutcliffe Kitchens and installed by Brian completes the warm, elegant vibe.
“Brian was a star at finding ways to repurpose original items,” Jill remarks. “We were away on a family vacation when he found a window buried in the original kitchen wall. He carefully removed it and installed it in our upstairs laundry as a surprise when we got home!” Extra attention was given to matching original mouldings and wood trim.
Inspired by her previous residence in the countryside, Jill’s décor was driven by her connection to nature. She says that when she’s working with clients, she tries to find out what feeling they want to invoke in a space. “While function is of high priority, how one feels in the space is of equal value. This is created through light, texture, colour and the use of the physical space.”

Kensworth House is an elegant yellow brick Victorian house set back from the road. The exterior facade boasts an angular covered porch starring the original front door. It was important to Jill to keep the door intact with the stained-glass inset, original knob and fittings.
A separate two-storey apartment was added to the original house in a previous renovation. Jill cleverly connected the two by designing a new small addition. It provided a main level office and a walkway to the family room where their children – one boy and two girls – love to
hang out with their friends. A new stairway by Stairworks leads to the separate wing.
The two teenaged children have their bedrooms in the separate wing of the house, each with their own bathroom and shared laundry facilities, with appliances supplied by Goemans. Jill says she designed it this way as a move towards independence. Jill’s youngest daughter’s bedroom is located close to their primary suite. Jill and David have two walkouts from their bedroom, which Jill loves. “I feel like I’m in a treehouse when I sit on our balcony.”

The couple’s primary bedroom is effortlessly comfortable, featuring muted natural tones and textures. Adjacent to the main bedroom, a den provides a private retreat for unwinding away from the hustle and bustle of the home.

Snowbirds
So, little snowbird, take me with you when you go…
Spread your tiny wings and fly away. And take the snow back with you where it came from on that day.
–ANNE MURRAY
Fly away with the birds
As we bird through the fall and into winter, we have diminishing returns for our efforts. Summer’s bounty of birds has migrated to many points south – to the southern U.S., across the warm Caribbean isles, to the neotropics of Central America or even further as the ambitious, long-distance migrants head for South America.
Coincidentally, many humans take this as a cue to do the same. We’re known as snowbirds – Canadians who travel south to warmer climes in the winter. Whether you’re a snowbird or a real bird, the aim is the same – fly away south to escape the rigours of our winters.
But where to? Well, if you’re a travelling birder, there are endless options. So, let’s wing our way out of winter’s cold grip, meet up with some of our familiar summer birds in their winter vacation spots and get acquainted with an ever-increasing number of species that choose to permanently reside in the warm, southern environs.
FLORIDA
You don’t have to travel far to find our summer songbirds – robins, red-wings, swallows and other familiar species. The Sunshine State is perhaps the most popular destination for Canadian snowbirds, but the birders’ bonus is you’ll also encounter birds that don’t occur in Ontario. Florida is where we get our first taste of subtropical birding.
Florida is home to over 350 commonly occurring, native bird species, bolstered by an additional 200 or so strays and accidentals. Plus, due to the inviting subtropical climate, a range of exotic birds – often escaped or released colourful caged birds such as the Monk, Nanday and Roseringed Parakeet, and several others – give Florida an even more tropical vibe. All this, combined with excellent parks, birding trails and the surrounding seas, makes Florida a terrific birding destination.

THE CARIBBEAN
Just off the Florida Keys, there’s a place called… Let’s put on some tunes to get in the mood for some tropical birding. From Florida, we’ll take a quick trip to the islands of the Caribbean archipelago. These tropical oases abound with birds and many have their own special, one-of-a-kind endemics. Endemics are prized among birders, especially the listers, as they are species that exist in only one place and nowhere else in the world. Virtually each island, with its geographical isolation from others in the Caribbean, has their own endemics. Cuba has the Cuban Tody, the Bee Hummingbird and 23 more! Jamaica has the Red-billed Streamertail and 26 additional endemics. The Bahamas have the Bahama Woodstar… and on it goes. These rarities, along with the many other birds of the islands, make for a birder’s paradise wherever you might land.

TEXAS
We’ll make a quick stopover in Texas before heading further south. Texas is a top destination for birders working on their North American life list, as more species of birds are found there than in any other U.S. state (California and Alaska are close seconds, but we’re staying our course south, not west or north). Texas is home to just over 600 species. There are three reasons why Texas has so many birds – location, location, location. Texas is home to eastern Atlantic coastal species, but due to its central location in the U.S., it also attracts a mix of species from north-central and western states, as well as birds from Mexico. Mexican species pay no heed to the

border crossing restrictions and regularly fly into Texas. Southern Texas, or the “Texas Tropics,” is a hotspot of subtropical rarities such as Green Jays and Chachalacas. Famous birding destinations in Texas are numerous – High Island, Bolivar Flats, Santa Ana, Laguna Atascosa, Big Bend and Aransas, among other places. For birders, Texas holds many highly sought-after avian specialities, with perhaps the best-known being the Whooping Crane. Once critically endangered and down to only 15 birds, conservation and protection has helped the species replenish to a few hundred. This remains, however, an incredibly low number in population stability terms, and one good hurricane could wipe them out again. So, why wait to see this iconic symbol of endangered species? Go birding in Texas!
The Neotropics
MEXICO
Although Mexico is a little off course with its westerly orientation, its Yucatan Peninsula juts significantly into the Caribbean Sea and is worth a quick stop. The Yucatan is the most bird-rich part of Mexico so this is a fitting place to touch down as we continue our flight south. Mexico is among the top 10 most biodiverse countries in the world, and the birdlife is part of the reason. Here, from your oceanfront eco-tourist lodging, you’ll find flocks of Flamingos in the shallows, Pelicans skimming the waves and magnificent Frigatebirds soaring high overhead. There’s so much more to discover in Mexico, but we are heading for the big bonanza of birding destinations and must get going.

CENTRAL AMERICA
We’ll get there fast and then we’ll take it slow… Now we’re making our way through the string of small countries that connect North and South America. We’re deep in the tropics now, complete with its jungles, rainforests, cloud forests and birds –beautiful, colourful, amazing birds. Each country more than makes up for its size with an abundance of birds, ever-increasing
in numbers. Belize features around 600 species, Guatemala 700, Honduras and Nicaragua almost 800, Costa Rica about 900, and Panama, the last link to South America, an amazing 1,000 species. Wow!
And such birds! They come in a kaleidoscope of colours – golds, greens and emeralds, crimsons, scarlets and saffrons, azures and violets, olivaceous and ochraceous and more. These are the Euphonias, the Parrots, Manakins, Toucans and Trogons – whole new families of birds unlike anything you’ve seen before. Their colours correlate to latitude – the further south we go, the more colour is infused in the birds’ plumages, attributed partially to the need to be seen in the deep, dark jungles. Their names equally captivate and intrigue – Resplendent Quetzal (perhaps the most beautiful bird in the world), Lovely Cotinga, Shining Honeycreeper. The list goes on.
Take your pick of birding in any of these bird-rich countries, you can’t go wrong.
South America
Give me a tropical (bird) contact high… For the last leg of our journey, we’ll take a transcontinental flight to discover a sampling of South American birds, or, as it’s famously known amongst birders, “the bird continent.” South America hosts more species of birds than any other continent in the world.

COLOMBIA
Take, for example, Colombia, a country roughly the same size as Ontario. Colombia is considered the birdiest country in South America, and arguably, the world! It is home to more than 2,000 species. By comparison, Ontario’s official bird list, according to the Ontario Field Ornithologists, stands at about 300 regularly occurring species. To be fair, there are an additional 200 or so accidentals, strays and vagrants, but these species are only seen once, or less than 10 times over 10 years.
And what about the dizzying diversity of species. The birdiest country in the world has a dazzling 150-plus different

species of hummingbirds alone! Ontario has one member of these iridescent, wee birds – the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. And Tanagers – Ontario has basically one of these beautiful species, the Scarlet Tanager. Colombia has more than 80!
Tropical Treats
Now that’s where you wanna go… Birding takes you to places you would never think of visiting otherwise – from coastal wetlands to towering, tropical cloud forests, through jungle trails and up to mountainside ecolodges. It’s mind-boggling, mind-blowing birding far away from the snow. And you really should go!
But for now, we’ve reached the end of our virtual winter birding vacation. Spring is coming, and the lengthening daylight hours are triggering the migration instinct in our overwintering birds. Soon, they will head north again on another incredible journey. We should get back home to greet them. OH
