Ottawa has become a second home to me since moving here more than a decade ago. Throughout this period, I’ve resided in several apartments across various neighbourhoods, grappling with the perpetual challenge of limited space. My genuine love and appreciation for interior design and architecture flourished during my time living in the Glebe, the Golden Triangle, and now, downtown west.

Navigating the constraints of compact apartments, where personalization is confined to surface-level alterations, has always presented a fun challenge for me. Despite the limitations of temporary living arrangements, there’s a certain thrill in transforming these spaces to reflect my personal style and identity. For anyone who lives in a small space, I’ve put together a list of tips to incorporate when trying to create the illusion of space (page 42).

We have amazing and unique feature homes in this issue. A colourful Carleton Heights home is full of creative storage solutions. An award-winning, eco-friendly home inspires energy-efficient living. An intricately-designed riverside home transports you to a place of tranquility and awe.

Allow the new energy spring brings to be your creative inspiration! As you browse the pages of this issue of OUR HOMES, I hope you feel inspired to tackle those long-delayed design projects, whether large-scale transformations or subtle enhancements.

Wishing you a happy spring!

Vacationing in Costa Rica

for five weeks this year offered an invigorating escape from the dark, cold winter in Ottawa. The lush landscapes and tropical climate created an idyllic setting for relaxation and renewal. Whether basking in the sun, hiking through rainforests, swimming in a pool at the bottom of a beautiful waterfall or enjoying toucans, macaws and other creatures that visited our home daily, every moment was rejuvenating. Best of all, we were able to share this special adventure with our granddaughters, daughter and friends!

As enjoyable as the vacation might have been, there’s the sweet anticipation of returning home to Ottawa. The memories made in Costa Rica serve as cherished souvenirs, but nothing quite compares to the familiarity of home. As the plane touched down in Ottawa, there was a sense of contentment knowing that the vibrant experiences of Costa Rica will enrich the moments shared with loved ones.

Back in Ottawa, there’s a renewed appreciation for the simple joys of everyday life. Whether it’s cosying up by the fireplace with a cup of Costa Rican coffee, or relishing in the laughter of family gatherings, each moment is treasured with a sense of warmth and gratitude. While the allure of exotic destinations draws us away each year, there’s truly no place like home, where the heart finds its deepest fulfillment.

Now it is time to embrace spring in Ottawa!

RINSE & Repeat

The laundry room is a hard-working space, as washing is a part of daily life, and the task itself is an act of service for our family and those we love. Embrace the laundry room as the cleaning headquarters of your home by designing it for functionality and organizing it to maximize efficiency. Add elements that reflect your style to make it a space you feel good in.

Regardless of size, most laundry spaces have a few things in common, including a washing machine, dryer, workbench/ folding countertop, drying racks, dirty clothes hamper, cabinetry or shelving, deep sink for soaking, iron, ironing board or steamer, and other household cleaning supplies.

When designing a laundry room, consider how you prefer to get the job done, as the needs of the space can vary depending on your laundry system. Some people presoak, while others do not. Some rarely iron, while others iron nearly every item. Some people are precise sorters, while others are not. Some people line-dry or hang-to-dry, while others do not. These factors affect the requirements of the space.

An important consideration for every laundry room is to provide a sufficient path of travel into, out of, and around the space (especially when carrying a basketful of laundry), and appropriate clearance in front of the machines (aim for a minimum of 42 inches).

The best ergonomics for your body and the tasks of bending, reaching and lifting may dictate whether your machines should be on pedestals, side by side or stacking, front or top load, etc. Cabinetry above your washer and dryer should be deeper than standard uppers and not as far above the machines as a typical offset so you can access and utilize this storage more easily. If you are installing a hanging rod, leave between 36 and 39 inches of hanging space between the rod and the countertop.

SOME TIPS:

Locating essentials within easy reach keeps things simple and efficient.

Incorporating a generous folding surface is useful for sorting and stacking clean clothing.

Including a space for multiple hampers is helpful to separate clean clothes from dirty, and for sorting different loads.

Utilizing closed storage is more practical than open shelving. For one, cleaners and detergents are often unsightly items, and secondly, if you use the dryer frequently, a lot of lint/dust is generated.

Selecting baskets and hampers made from natural materials such as wicker, wool, and canvas is generally much more attractive than their plastic counterparts and a more sustainable option.

Installing pull-out laundry bins concealed behind cabinetry keeps things looking tidy.

There are also racks that can be integrated into cabinetry that pull out to provide a surface to lay items flat to dry (such as wool garments that can be easily misshapen if hung up when wet).

Choosing resilient, hard-working materials and finishes such as paint-grade wood wainscotting, tile flooring, scrubbable paint and durable countertops will stand up to laundry baskets bumping the walls, wet items dripping across the floor and cleaners and detergents that can damage more delicate counter materials (such as marble).

Follow the machine recommendations for load size – your clothes don’t get clean if you overload your washer.

Caring for clothing and linens as per their instructions might take you more time, but in the long run, you will extend the life of your clothing (and save money).

Giving your clothing a shake and a snap before line-drying gets the wrinkles out. Folding items as soon as they come out of the dryer or off the line avoids double handling (and reduces time spent ironing!).

Every few months, give your laundry space a deep, thorough clean. Wipe the machines inside and out, clean the filters and vacuum the areas around and behind them. Remember to clean the dryer lint trap after every use. Take everything out of storage cabinetry and off any shelves and purge what you no longer use or need. Wash the walls, ceiling, doors, trim, cabinetry and floors. Spray and wipe all surfaces (disconnect appliances from power sources, as required), and give the sink and faucet a good scrub. Open the window to get fresh air circulating. OH

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JENELLE MCCULLOCH

I PROMISE YOU WILL NEVER MAKE PANCAKES ANOTHER WAY AGAIN!

THESE RICOTTA PANCAKES ARE FLUFFY, MOIST AND HAVE A HINT OF FRESH CITRUS.

INGREDIENTS

(Makes 12 pancakes)

1-½ cups all-purpose flour (scoop and level to measure)

3-½ Tbsp granulated sugar

2 tsp baking powder

¼ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

1 cup milk

¾ cup ricotta cheese (low-fat or whole)

3 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1-2 Tbsp lemon zest (depending on how lemony you want them)

¼ cup fresh lemon juice

1 Tbsp butter, melted

Maple syrup for serving

DIRECTIONS

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside. In a medium bowl combine milk, ricotta cheese, eggs, vanilla, lemon zest, lemon juice and butter. Mix well to combine and then fold into the dry ingredients. Do not overmix the batter.

Heat a lightly oiled griddle or pan over medium-high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Cook until bubbles form and the edges are dry, about 2 to 3 minutes. Flip and cook until browned on the other side. Repeat with remaining batter. Serve with maple syrup. OH

Colourful Revamp FOR A CARLETON HEIGHTS HOME

OOne step into this Carleton Heights residence reveals a home infused with personality and pizzazz. Personal mementos of travel and family heritage accentuate the home, where every corner tells a story.

Caroline, a co-owner of Laurysen Kitchens, embraced a shift towards simplicity, opting to downsize her home with husband, Giuseppe “Pep.” The couple, formerly residing in a home on a spacious property in Ashton, sought a smaller living space that would allow them the freedom to travel with minimal upkeep.

“Our old house was 6,000 sq. ft. on five acres,” says Caroline. “There was so much house for just the two of us. I wanted something that was going to be easy. I wanted a house that was comfortable, easy to maintain, not fussy, but still stylish.”

RIGHT: A favourite colour of Caroline’s, orange is a prominent accent used throughout the home, including the stove, island seating and faucet cover.

After moving into this home in spring of 2021, the couple started with a few small renos, which quickly led to a full-scale, comprehensive renovation.

“Originally we were only going to touch a few rooms with renovations,” Caroline laughs. “In the end, the only thing from the original house not changed was the fireplace surround and tub in the main bath.”

The home features three bedrooms and three-and-ahalf bathrooms spread out on three levels of living. There is a confident embrace of colours throughout, giving each space a personality of its own.

“I like oranges, yellows, greens and blues, so those are the colours we went with in the house,” says Caroline. “I always like a room that has a little bit of colour.”

An ode to Caroline’s Dutch heritage, the use of orange takes centre stage, skillfully weaving through the décor with both subtle accents and bold splashes. In the kitchen, orange can be found in some unlikely places, like the stove (Universal Appliances), faucet cover and island seating.

The original kitchen layout was a small L-shape with limited storage. During renovations, the homeowners removed the old kitchen and made it longer, making room for a pantry on the end. Walnut-melamine cabinets from Laurysen Kitchens complement the orange accents and make the space feel warm and inviting.

For Caroline, it was important to create a functional and stylish space. Ample storage and open configuration enable the homeowners to utilize the kitchen to its fullest.

The laundry room is another colourful and thoughtfully designed space with cheery light blue cabinetry and fun, patterned tile. To make the most of the space, unique, functional additions include a Panasonic drying system and a pull-out folding station.

“We built wardrobes and added a stacked washer/dryer inside those cabinets,” says Caroline. “I fell in love with the tile (Euro Tile & Stone) and the blue cabinets (Laurysen Kitchens). It’s a happy room, you walk in and it’s so bright.”

Caroline holds a special affinity for the main-floor powder room, which picked up a National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) design award in 2021. The design process started with Caroline handpicking the floor tile, followed by a complementary wall tile. A granite bowl she had been saving found its place in this chic bathroom, introducing both texture and a bold statement to the compact yet stylish space.

There’s also an en suite bathroom on the main level. Complete with a large walk-in shower and stunning floor-to-ceiling tile (Euro Tile & Stone), this spacious bathroom is full of carefully-selected design features, including a heated towel rack and undercabinet lighting.

The “Laurysen touch” is seen in the form of stylish and savvy storage solutions in all rooms of the house. Whether it’s the sleek, smart built-ins that bring symmetry to the dining room or the eclectic shelving unit in Caroline’s office displaying her vibrant red sculptures, every room reflects the artful integration of the stylish and functional cabinetry Laurysen is known for.

A key component of the renovation was the installation of a new staircase connecting the main floor to both the second floor and the basement (Accurate Stairs + Railings). The glass-panelled sides enable the flow of light throughout the home, preserving the openness of the main floor.

Also worth noting is the impressive art collection the couple has curated. Locally-loved artists, including Ben Babelowsky and Philip Craig, adorn the walls among other treasured finds.

A custom-made orange sofa from their previous home ended up fitting perfectly in the space. When undertaking their large renovation, Caroline and Giuseppe decided to build a bar around the circular portion of the sofa for more entertaining space.

When reflecting on her home and the significant renovations that have taken place, Caroline notes there is no one room that’s her favourite, each holds a special place in her heart.

“I actually love every room in the house,” she says. “I love how it all came together. Each room is so unique.” OH

Make A Small Space APPEAR LARGER

Urban living these days often means making your home in an apartment or condo with limited space. The challenge of small spaces is not a limitation but an opportunity to get creative. Here’s how.

1 Declutter

A room with too many items or pieces of furniture can make a small space feel cramped. Avoid displaying a lot of knick-knacks, or group them so they appear as a stylish installation. Think less is more!

2

Draw The Eye Upward

You can do this several ways. Include large-scale art, or make use of vertical design elements like creative panelling or wainscotting. Think about adding a visually interesting ceiling fixture that will catch attention and draw eyes upward.

3 Mirrors

This is an easy and effective tip that will instantly make a room feel larger. Place mirrors on walls that don’t get much natural light. This technique allows you to bounce light from your windows and create the illusion of a larger space.

4 Lighting

Light provides the impression of a larger space when done right. Disperse light throughout a room by using multiple sources – sconces, table and floor lamps, in addition to ceiling fixtures.

5 Smart Storage Solutions

When selecting furniture for compact spaces, don’t just consider aesthetics, think about maximizing functionality. With each piece you purchase, examine the potential for storage. For instance, select a coffee table with pull-out drawers or a shelf that enables you to store belongings. When choosing a bed, select one with enough height to fit storage containers underneath.

Whether you’re navigating the cosy confines of an apartment or condo, or just looking to improve a compact room, these simple design tips are an easy solution for those looking to create the illusion of a larger space without having to undertake any sort of renovation in the process. OH

Sweet DREAMS

FOUNDING STORY

Obasan’s story started in the early 1990s as a response to customers with severe allergies seeking alternatives to conventional mattresses. This initiated a journey to relearn mattress-making techniques, marking a shift toward organic components and sourcing the finest natural materials. Obasan’s founder Jean Corriveau travelled to countries like Peru, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Argentina and the Netherlands in his pursuit to ensure ethical sourcing for the company. Since then, Obasan has curated a collection of handcrafted mattresses and bedding made with ethically-sourced, certified-organic materials, proudly crafted in their Ottawa factory.

QUALITY

Director of operations Jonathan Laplante says their commitment to quality begins at the source – their partners’ farms. “We undertake a conscientious journey to ensure that from the initial stages to the final product reaching your home, every step is infused with meticulous care and aligns with our core values.”

ADDING VALUE TO YOUR SLEEP

Obasan is on a mission to reshape wellness conversations by highlighting the importance of quality sleep for your health, productivity and overall wellbeing. “Proper sleep profoundly impacts many aspects of your life,” says Obasan’s creative director Emilie Gignac.

ECO-CONSCIOUS SHOPPING

Inspired by the growing desire for sustainable home décor, Obasan is now crafting organic throw-pillow inserts. Made with 100 per cent certified organic materials, they’re the ideal eco-conscious choice for your living spaces. Obasan is also shifting to environmentally-friendly paper packaging for mattresses and bedding accessories.

PERSONALIZED SERVICE

“Our number one priority has always been to offer highly personalized services to our clients, to forge deeper connections and to truly understand their individual sleep needs,” says showroom manager Darlie John. “We aim to create a warm and welcoming experience for them. In the retail world, there’s often a sense of detachment, but that’s never been the case with Obasan.”

CUSTOMIZABLE SLEEP

Obasan distinguishes itself through a commitment to personalized, curated sleep systems. The company’s motto underscores the belief that everyone is unique, prompting the question: why settle for a mattress or pillows designed for the masses? For the complete Obasan experience, a visit to their beautiful showroom is encouraged. OH

IIn addition to being warm, earthy and inviting, it’s awardwinning, grabbing the 2023 Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA) Innovation Award: Green Custom Home of the Year.

As the owner of Corvinelli Homes, John has built many homes for others. He drew on this experience to build a timber frame, net-zero bungalow when he and Trudy were ready to downsize.

Together with their daughter Amy Corvinelli, they designed a function-first home that is as sensible as

it is comfortable. Both John and Amy are graduates of Algonquin College’s architectural technology program, a generation apart.

John and Trudy found the ideal lot for their new home right next to the 3,000+ sq. ft. house where they raised their family. This expansive piece of land holds sentimental value, having been in John’s family for generations, and it also happens to be where he grew up. Their new 2,200 sq. ft. bungalow now stands on what used to be a tennis court where John played many a match over the years.

BOTTOM LEFT:

The incorporation of white pine harvested from the property is woven into the home’s design, providing a grounding and natural ambience to the space.

OPPOSITE: The custom fireplace and windows elevate the home’s design.

54 | ourhomes SPRING 2024

The Corvinellis were certain about what they wanted to have in their new home, using their previous residence as a lesson in what was a must for them, and what they could do without.

From the project’s outset, they aimed to shrink their footprint while enhancing functionality, prioritizing purposeful spaces. They reduced the foyer size and chose an oversize shower instead of a tub for their en suite.

They also chose not to have a dedicated dining or family room. Instead, they incorporated a flowing open-concept main living space, where light and air are among the most prominent features. They also fostered an indoor/outdoor connection with a screened-in, covered porch that lets them dine al fresco.

The net-zero home maximizes energy efficiency with self-sufficient energy production, including solar panels.

“I make electricity and I over-produce in the summer, which turns into credits with Hydro One,” says John. “And when the sun isn’t out as

much towards the end of the year, we start using those credits.”

It’s not just the net-zero features like solar panels that make this home green. The approach to the design and décor was intentional at every opportunity to minimize waste, both with materials and space planning. They also consciously reused and repurposed items wherever they could, emphasizing natural décor themes that underpin the indoor-outdoor connection.

For example, many of the trees that dot the property’s landscape were planted by John or his family members over many years.

“One of the trees that we cut down [for the project] was a 50-yearold white pine tree,” says John. “We cut the tree, planed it and re-used it throughout the house.”

This lovely white pine can be seen in the sunroom as well as in the beams on the vaulted ceilings throughout the home, creating a meaningful connection between the home and land. Continued on page 56

The kitchen reveals plenty of clever design details like this concealed paper-towel dispenser.
Clever storage solutions maximize the use of space in this woodtoned kitchen.

“We’re still making benches and other things from that pine tree,” says John.

In the spirit of upcycling, there are several old items that were given new, fashionable jobs in the timber frame bungalow, such as the bank of windows with a delicate pattern that serves as a divider in the foyer, as well as sliding barn doors, refinished and revived.

Décor choices were intentional, incorporating a lot of the same colour palette and materials that you find in the surrounding landscape beyond their windows. Tile with subtle veining is used throughout the house, while warm oak hardwood (Baker Design) runs underfoot in most of the spaces.

Given the home’s proximity to the river, the footprint was required to be narrower, which runs the risk of being darker and feeling tight, but John and Amy mindfully compensated for this in the design.

TOP RIGHT: This home blends concept and construction, creating a space that resonates with the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

“The first thing we did with the design was put clerestory windows at the front of the house to bring sunlight in,” says John.

The windows are perfectly positioned for cross-ventilation. Windows at the rear of the house, when opened, create a pathway for passive cooling.

One of the most alluring architectural features in the home is the one-way reverse slope that casually catches and directs the eye. It emphasizes the height of the ceilings, as well as creating visual interest, particularly where the slope meets the stone fireplace (Casselman Cement Limited), creating a rustic and resounding focal point in the main living space.

The ultimate custom gas fireplace for every space.

The primary bedroom is a lesson in compact living that yields maximum benefits. The room is minimally furnished, with a bed and night tables only. Behind the bed and rustic shiplap accent wall is a walkthrough closet.

“We eliminated the need for drawers or dressers in the bedroom by putting everything in the closet, behind the wall,” says John.

In the kitchen, the Corvinellis wanted a material that is as durable as it is beautiful.

For the counters (Urban Quarry), they chose a sturdy granite with a natural patina and used it efficiently by getting two slabs and using it in both the kitchen and bathrooms, another eco-friendly choice.

The kitchen cabinets by Casselman Kitchen were chosen because of the “natural colour with a slight intensity, to match the beams, and the colour of the grain,” says John.

The whole-home design is meant to be timeless and trendless, another nod to the nature outside, both with this home’s concept and construction. OH

Water IN THE GARDEN

Water fosters biodiversity, contributing to a healthier and more balanced garden environment.

If you want birds or butterflies in your garden, water is a must.

Frogs will come if you have a pond. Some fish can help with the algae and pond waste and can eat insects and mosquito larvae. However, fish may attract raccoons and herons. A great blue heron visited my small pond many years ago and had a wonderful

meal of all my goldfish! I made sure my next pond had some strategically placed rocks for the fish to hide.

For the winter, a small heater for a birdbath or a larger one for a pond is a great way to keep a small area of water from freezing, so birds can visit all year long. This also allows for gases from decaying organic matter to escape, which is very important for overwintering fish and frogs.

Water is the source of life and has been an essential design element in the garden for many millennia. Water in the garden is about abundance and flow. It can be a source of fun, serenity, relaxation, joy, curiosity, mystery and magic.

The sound of water contributes to the sensory experience, providing a calming backdrop that drowns out the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you live by a busy street or beside a noisy neighbour, a waterfall from a pond or splashes from a single fountain are wonderful ways to distract from those noises.

It really doesn’t matter how small your space is – there is a water feature for you.

TABLETOP

There are tabletop water features that fit on a small table in a small space, like a balcony. Smaller homes with small gardens could add a birdbath or a stand-alone fountain that sits in a dish with a small recirculating pump. You could even use a half-barrel or water trough. All it takes is a few water plants like water lilies and marginal plants like irises and voilà, you have a miniature water garden. Adding a little spitter (small fountain) will oxygenate the water so you will have success with fish in your little water feature.

INGROUND

If you have a larger garden, an inground pond might be the thing. You can purchase preformed liners for a pond, or you can dig one in the ground in whatever shape you want or need. I would recommend that whichever you choose, go a little bigger than you think you want. Ponds somehow look smaller once they are in the ground.

WATERFALLS

Pondless waterfalls are the way to go if you just want to have the therapeutic qualities of water without the maintenance of a pond.

Space, budget and style will help determine what kind of water feature to incorporate into your garden. A townhouse might call for a small wall fountain spilling into a basin and a reflecting pool would match a modern house in the city. Ponds with waterfalls should look natural, or as natural as possible, in their environment. The environment of where you live will help make your choices.

Regardless of the type of water feature you decide on, make sure it is situated close to the house with good views from the windows and/or seating areas or patios. Ponds should have some sun but keep in mind two-thirds of the surface should be covered with plants to reduce the amount of algae that can grow.

The integration of water features in a garden transcends mere aesthetics, offering a plethora of benefits for both the environment and the well-being of its inhabitants. Embracing the allure of water in the garden is not just an aesthetic choice but a transformative journey toward cultivating a space that nurtures and rejuvenates the soul. OH

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR SPACE

5 Ways To Infuse Light Into Your Home

Brightening up a dark space can often pose a design challenge. Natural sunlight, as crucial as it is fickle, significantly influences the ambience of any space. In areas where there is an absence of large windows, your home can easily feel dim and gloomy (think basement or window-less powder rooms).

Don’t fret! There are easy tips and tricks to incorporate into your own home, from selecting the right paint to utilizing clever lighting solutions. The following five tips will help transform a dim room into a bright and cheerful haven.

1. CHOOSING THE RIGHT PAINT

Selecting the appropriate paint can work wonders in brightening up a room. Opt for a matte finish as it efficiently reflects light in all directions without causing glare. Benjamin Moore’s White Dove or Chantilly Lace are favourite choices among designers for their ability to amplify light and create an airy feel.

2. LIGHT & BRIGHT ACCENTS

To create a cheerful ambience, incorporate light and bright accents. Choose a colour palette and patterns that evoke happiness and tranquility. Soft hues like pastel yellows, gentle blues or refreshing greens can instantly uplift an atmosphere, making the space feel more welcoming. Think blankets, pillows and art as easy accessories to bring on the brightness!

3. STRATEGIC LIGHTING

Ambient lighting is essential in combatting darkness. Incorporate lamps with shades that diffuse light evenly, providing a warm, cosy glow. Opt for warm-toned bulbs to infuse a homey feel without overpowering brightness. The key with lighting is to not overdo it with bright overhead lights, but instead incorporate lighting accents that can preserve the inviting feel of a room.

4. GLASS-PANELLED DOORS

Enhance natural light flow between rooms by installing glass-panelled doors. These doors allow light to permeate while maintaining privacy. Explore the diverse options available in the market to find the perfect fit for your space.

5. OPTIMAL CURTAINS & BLINDS

Avoid heavy curtains and thick blinds in dark spaces. Instead, opt for sheer curtains or venetian blinds that allow better control over natural light. These window coverings spread and manage incoming light effectively, ensuring a well-lit, yet comfortable ambience. OH

PUMPED ABOUT HVAC

HEAT PUMPS ARE A TECHNOLOGY TO GET EXCITED ABOUT

The search for the ideal heat source, one that balances efficiency, affordability and concern for the environment, has always been something of a daunting task. But that search might just end with heat pumps, a new and exciting home heating technology that checks all the boxes.

Heat pumps work on the simple process of heat transfer. Traditional furnaces burn fuel to generate warmth via flames or a heating element. Heat pumps work by pushing existing heat into a colder region – in the winter they draw heat into your home from outside, while in the summer they channel excess heat out of your home.

There are several types of heat pumps, but the most common are air-source heat pumps. These take warmth from the air outside, pump it through refrigerant-filled coils, like what’s on the back of your fridge, and then into your home.

“The appeal of heat pumps is that you are utilizing a free energy source as it draws from outside air, thereby freeing us of the cycle of using fossil fuels (oil, gas, propane) for heating and cooling,” explains Damian Keermaa of Smart Elements Heating and Cooling. “Since heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, they use far less energy than a furnace or any form of electric heating and have a smaller carbon footprint.”

Many air-source heat pumps come with a backup electrical heating element in case the exterior temperature drops too low for the pump to properly function. However, in the cold Canadian climate, the option generally recommended by HVAC technicians is called a dual-fuel heat pump. These operate until the ambient temperature drops too low, when it switches over to an alternate fuel source, typically the home’s furnace. Think of it as a hybrid car that runs on electricity but switches to gas when needed.

“Heat pumps are ideally used as a supplemental source of heat,” says Damian. “There are times, for example, during the unit’s defrost cycle, that you will need a furnace. The idea of a heat pump is, in my opinion, to efficiently top up home heating so the furnace or heaters go on less frequently. Many people use fireplaces in the same manner, but of course, heat pumps don’t emit the same carbon that burning wood does.”

Air-source heat pumps can be installed in a home at any time (unlike geothermal heat pumps, which draw radiant heat from the ground, and which are typically only installed during home builds) if it has existing vent work. It’s a more complicated and expensive proposition if you have an older home without vents.

Damian stresses it’s important to get the right-sized unit for your home. As with any HVAC system, an undersized unit will struggle to heat/cool the home, while an oversized one will hit the desired temperature before it completes its cycle, resulting in frequent stops/starts that will shorten the unit’s lifespan. Properly sizing a heat pump considers not only the size of the home, but also factors such things as sun exposure and insulation.

A heat pump should last between 10 and 25 years, with those in more moderate climates lasting longer. Regular inspection and maintenance will ensure your pump’s longevity.

As a result of their efficiency, various levels of government offer incentives for homeowners to invest in heat pumps. Hybrid systems are eligible for $5,600 from the Federal Greener Homes Initiative, and the province of Ontario offers additional grants (a heating and cooling technician will be able to walk you through the various options).

“Heat pumps will save you money and help save the planet, so they are really a good investment,” Damian says. “They’re here to stay, and the technology is only getting better.” OH

Riverfront INNOVATION

STORY JODY SCULLY PHOTOGRAPHY GORDON KING

THIS STUNNING CUSTOM-BUILT HOME ON THE OTTAWA RIVER TAKES NATURAL LIGHT AND BREATHTAKING VIEWS TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL.

80 | ourhomes SPRING 2024 home & builder

Constructed by Revelstoke Custom Homes & Renovations with design by Tanner Vine Interiors, the waterfront home is a beautiful example of what can be achieved when quality craftsmanship meets innovative design.

According to Claudio Falsetto, president of Revelstoke, “the focus of the home is really the way William Ritcey designed the windows and spaces so that all the light and views flood into the home, creating an outdoor connection all year long.”

There are many unique and custom design elements in the home, but the open staircase (Accurate Stairs + Railings) paired with the full glass wall is a stand-out feature. “The floating stairs create a sense of openness and allow so much light into the home,” says Claudio.

In the original design, the staircase was a focal point when you entered the home. However, the client was concerned that the design revealed too much of the home right from the front door. To amend this, a freestanding two-storey wall was added at the bottom of the staircase to create separation between the entryway and the rest of the home. With the wall set back from the front glass wall about 18-inches, light is able to easily flow around it.

BOTTOM LEFT: Gorgeous landscaping lines the lock stone leading up to the front entrance. home & builder

“We added a venetian lime plaster treatment (Applied Designs) on the wall, which creates a lot of texture and catches the light with a bit of shine but is also really durable,” says Tanner.

The interior finishes and material selections were carefully chosen to create continuity throughout the home. The beautiful white oak hardwood floors (Rome Flooring Ltd.) perfectly complement the stairs, kitchen island, living room built-ins, and the reclaimed wood ceiling beams (Atmosphère & Bois).

“We didn’t do any bold statements or high contrast,” says Tanner. “We really relied on the natural materials like wood, stone, ceramic, and the texture of the venetian plaster to bring interest into the home.”

The high-contrast herringbone tile (Euro Tile & Stone) and the deep olive green built-ins in the mudroom subtly stand out, offering a touch of uniqueness. The wood shelves tie in with the wood tones in the rest of the house and they added a sink in front of the window so the kids could wash up when they come in.

In the kitchen, the client desired the aesthetic of natural marble but sought a more resilient and low-maintenance alternative. To meet the request, Tanner chose a manufactured stone called Dekton that is harder and denser than porcelain (Solid Decorum Inc). “The nice advantage of the sintered stone is that it doesn’t stain and is scratchand-heat resistant so pots can go straight from the stove to the counter,” explains Tanner. Continued on page 84

ourhomes SPRING 2024 | 83

The kitchen also features a panel-ready Miele fridge that blends with the cabinetry and an oversize Miele range. To counterbalance the extra space needed for the appliances, a sink and counter space were added to a pantry, turning this space into a multi-use storageand-prep space.

The builder, designer and homeowner collaborated ingeniously to devise a concealed solution for the family room. “There was an open doorway to the family room on the original plans, but the homeowner wanted to add a door to reduce noise,” says Claudio.

To maintain the aesthetic integrity near the fireplace and built-ins, they decided on a hidden door seamlessly blending with the wood panelling. The room offers access to the rear deck and a front powder room, creating a private space that allows for a getaway without being too removed from the main living area. Continued on page 86

In the primary en suite, fitting a whirlpool bath and steam shower posed a challenge. The solution was to enclose the tub within the shower area, creating a separate space. A wood-like porcelain tile used on the floor and shower ceiling adds warmth to the room while also keeping the shower area waterproof.

“Not only is the space beautiful, but it’s also really functional and gives the homeowner everything they wanted,” says Tanner.

The home also boasts a collection of fabulous outdoor living spaces. There’s a covered back deck that can be accessed from all the main-floor rooms, as well as a second-floor balcony off the primary suite that provides a private retreat for the homeowners. But the pìece-derésistance is the secluded third-floor balcony that offers magnificent views and benefits from a nice breeze off the river, so that even on hot, humid days it’s a thoroughly enjoyable space for the family to spend time.

“The finished product is quite stunning, and we were proud to be a finalist in the Custom Home category for the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association Housing Design Awards,” explains Claudio. The awards recognize excellence in design and quality of construction in the new home and renovation industry.

When discussing what makes Revelstoke stand out from the competition, Claudio says “the key to our longevity is the personal relationships we have with our clients and business associates. We get excellent referrals and that kind of rapport has kept us in business for almost 35 years.” OH

How-To

1. SELECT FRESH

FLOWERS

PRESSED Botanical FRAMED ART

Make flowers the star of any room by creating this simple pressed botanical art. Bring the essence of the season inside with this easy DIY.

Start by choosing a bouquet of fresh flowers. Opt for blossoms that are almost at their peak, have naturally-flat shapes and are single-layered petals like daisies or cosmos for optimal results. Pick greenery, like eucalyptus, ivy or ruscus.

2. PREPARE MATERIALS

Separate and cut flowers to desired length, removing extra leaves. Cut desired greens.

90 | ourhomes SPRING 2024 crafty ideas

3. PRESS FLOWERS

You can press flowers and greens two ways –between the pages of a book or with an iron.

If you are using the book method, make sure flowers are placed between two pages of parchment paper before adding to a book. This method will take several weeks.

Using an iron will speed up the process. Place flowers and greens between parchment paper on top of a towel. You may have to do this in batches. Place your iron directly over flowers and greens, and hold for approximately six seconds to start. Continue this process, holding the iron for up to 10 seconds, making sure flowers and greens do not burn. Repeat until all flowers have been pressed.

4. PLAN AND ARRANGE

Once the flowers are completely dry, remove from parchment paper, then layer the arrangement on the palette paper. Try different layouts until you are happy with the placements.

5. FRAME ARTWORK

Place the pressed flowers on the palette paper into the frame, and secure in place.

6. HANG AND ENJOY

Find a spot to hang your botanical art and let the colours add a touch of elegance to your space. OH

Everything You Need To Host An UNFORGETTABLE PAR-TEA!

The flowers are blooming and so are the ideas for a perfect afternoon tea party. Whether you’re hosting a baby shower, bridal shower, birthday party or gathering with family and friends, impress your guests with these essentials for making your spring social memorable.

Location

If you’re fortunate enough to have the forecast on your side, an outdoor tea party is exceptionally charming. Simply set up a table on your patio or porch for a more traditional event or try hosting it right in your garden alongside the sweet smell of tulips, roses and lilacs for a unique experience. Of course, if spring showers force you inside, you can still celebrate the season by including freshly-cut flowers in a one-of-a-kind vase, a seasonal paper garland and bright accent colours.

Let’s call this spring bling! Your party will pop with peony patterns and thoughtfully chosen tableware. Start with a statement tablecloth and matching linen napkins to set the tone. A coordinated collection of elegant cups and saucers, tiered cake stands, plates, milk and creamers, sugar and jam pots, and water glasses will give your space a cohesive look. Be sure to use teapots that can steep both looseleaf and bags (depending on what you plan to offer on your menu). Including sweet little spoons or whimsical side plates will add some personality to your tablescape and put a smile on your guests’ faces. All the extra effort you put into the decorating details helps create a special feeling for everyone in attendance.

Menu

Your guests will expect perfectly-sized savoury sandwiches, colourful jams, lemony desserts and a selection of teas to appease every palette. Staying within the traditional items of an afternoon tea service is the easiest way to prepare for your group. You’ll always want to include warm scones with berry compote, honey butter or whipped cream as well as fruity and flowery-flavoured teas that are reminiscent of springtime. A crisp white wine or prosecco is often appreciated at afternoon events. Once you have the basics ready, try looking up menus you’ve enjoyed at notable tea rooms and recreating them with confidence. Add fancier options like crab deviled eggs, chicken with foie gras parfaits and almond sponge cake topped with edible flowers as a delightful surprise.

Aside from a garden tea party with a botanical vibe, there are plenty of other themes you can come up with to host a fun celebration. Brainstorm ideas by thinking about all the things you enjoy about spring like Mother’s Day, birds, going to the beach or sunshine, and use them as decorating concepts. Also, think about ideas for children like a storybook or character-inspired tea party. And let’s not forget, for those three o’clock steepers that stay at the party a little too long, you can always turn your event into a tipsy tea party with tea-infused mixed cocktails for a tastefully good time! Just make sure everyone gets home safely. OH
