AAFTER A BEAUTIFUL, SUNNY FALL, I’m more than ready to embrace the winter months and the slower pace they allow. When I think of winter in Ottawa, I get excited about pulling out my skates (fingers crossed for a successful canal season), snowshoes and skis. There’s something so special about winter walks with friends and family, appreciating how snow transforms the landscape into a picturesque wonderland. As much as I love winter’s outdoor activities, I also treasure the chance to slow down and get cosy with an amaretto-spiked hot chocolate, watching my favourite festive films – like The Holiday (which I’ve watched more times than I care to admit), Love Actually and Christmas With The Kranks
In this issue, we’re thrilled to share a fabulous collection of feature homes, each uniquely different yet equally captivating. Cardel Homes’ Grayson model showcases the perfect harmony of style and functionality, offering the ideal space for multigenerational living with its thoughtful layout. As we find ourselves
on the cusp of winter, Ottawa’s infamous cold settles in, bringing a stark contrast to the steamy summer we’ve recently left behind. Our city is no stranger to extremes, and while the biting chill may send us rushing indoors, it also ushers in a season of comfort and reflection.
Winter in Ottawa offers us the perfect opportunity to embrace the cosy magic of blanket season. It’s a time to light candles that cast a soft glow, gather around crackling fireplaces, and indulge in the quiet pleasures of home. The pace slows, and we’re invited to hibernate, not just in our homes but within ourselves, taking a well-deserved pause after a busy year. We have some perfectly timed articles in this issue to inspire as you prepare your home for the months ahead.
Of course, the holidays are just around the corner, providing warmth and joy amid the chill. They give us something to look forward to – a time to reconnect with loved ones, celebrate traditions, and find gratitude in simple moments. As the year draws to a close, we also approach the new year, a time ripe with possibility. It’s the perfect moment to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re going, perhaps even setting a resolution or two. Whether it’s committing to healthier habits or making a small change that sparks joy, the new year offers a fresh start. In this issue we offer 10 daily health habits to consider.
So, as the snow begins to fall, let’s embrace all that winter has to offer – both its stillness and its celebrations. There’s beauty in the season if we take the time to appreciate it.
Wishing you the best for the upcoming holidays and the new year to come!
Are current design trends right for you? It’s important to approach trendy design elements critically to evaluate if you like the trend enough to live with it for a while and whether it can be integrated successfully with your existing design, furnishings, architecture and site. For example, curved archways became very popular but were sometimes incorporated into spaces incongruent with the existing architecture, which caused a visual disconnect.
Here are some current themes in the industry – discern for yourself whether you’d like to give them a try.
MICRO/SECONDARY DWELLINGS
There are different reasons you might consider a secondary dwelling (if your property allows it). Affordability is a primary motive, as rental income can help pay your mortgage. Another popular arrangement is independent, intergenerational living – whether due to health circumstances or lifestyle choices. There are many creative designs to maximize efficiency in a small footprint.
BROWN
Possibly in response to environmental issues and sustainability or the cycle of design, shades of brown have seen a resurgence. Varying from camel to deep
chocolate, the rich, earthy hues offer a grounding, comforting and calming effect in a space. You can incorporate the colour through freestanding furniture, upholstery pieces, hardwood flooring, millwork or wall coverings and paint.
TERRACOTTA TILE
We’ve been seeing the return of terracotta tile for a while. Perhaps one could argue that it is best suited to Spanish and Mediterranean architecture. However, the earthy palette is versatile enough to integrate successfully into farmhouse and cottage styles. Terracotta tiles were traditionally handmade and sun-dried, known as “baked earth,” but even contemporary versions add instant old-world charm to a space while imbuing natural character.
CHUNKY GROUT
Grout lines are often minimized to avoid scrubbing and cleaning. However, some tiles, such as terracotta, should be installed with substantial grout lines to look authentic. Thicker grout lines are also used to create visual interest in custom tile layouts, where a larger band of grout delineates horizontally or vertically. The options for a unique pattern are endless, as long as your installer is on board!
TRIM & DOORS
There is a shift from white painted trim and doors. You will see a lot of solid-wood trim and doors stained to match the hardwood flooring. This is a classic and timeless approach and can be achieved successfully in modern and traditional spaces. An alternative is to paint trim and doors in a contrasting colour to the walls. A few years ago, we began to see subtle versions of this where light walls were paired with trim and doors a few shades darker in a greige hue. As more and more interiors are moving away from the all-white palette into more colour, contrasting trim is a way to add personality and impact, and we are seeing full-blown colour on mouldings, trims and doors. Tip: Try it in one room to see if you like it before you commit to a larger open-concept space!
TEXTURED WALLS & CEILINGS
The application/installation of Venetian plaster, lime wash, Roman clay, woven wall coverings and wood cladding adds interest to walls and ceilings instead of plain, painted drywall. It is important to have a professional installer for some of these materials and finishes (or a seasoned DIYer) – for example, hanging wall coverings on the ceiling is no simple task!
ARTISANAL
A downfall in design over the past couple of decades has been the homogeny of developments, easily replicated viral “of the moment” looks and the availability of mass-produced items. Although there are benefits to the above, the result can be that homes lack differentiation and look the same as the next. However, there is a real focus on personalization in design and this can be achieved by sourcing artisanal goods. Skilled craftspeople use traditional means and methods to create bespoke pieces in small batches or one-offs. This adds character and charm to your space while supporting the good people preserving uniquely human skills. OH

WINTER HIBERNATION
8 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME COSIER FOR THE SEASON
As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, there’s nothing quite like transforming your home into a warm, inviting winter haven. Whether you’re settling in by the fire, enjoying a hot cup of cocoa or hosting a gathering, here are some of my favourite ways to create the perfect atmosphere and embrace the beauty of the season.
1. Make An Impression With Your Entryway
Set the tone for the rest of your home and greet your guests with warmth from the moment they arrive on your doorstep. Extending the cosiness to the outside with a welcoming wreath or swag, a seasonal doormat and a few decorative touches can make a big impression.
2. Incorporate Natural Elements
Embrace the beauty of winter by bringing the outdoors in. Pine cones, evergreen branches and berries make for stunning and simple centrepieces and decorative touches. Display these natural elements in vases or as part of a table arrangement to evoke a sense of seasonal charm and warmth.
3. Create A Cosy Nook
Create a designated corner in your home that invites relaxation. Choose a comfortable chair, drape a soft throw over it and add a side table with a warm reading lamp. The perfect hideaway for reading, sipping a cocktail or simply unwinding after a long day!
Continued on page 30
4. Seasonal Scents
Introduce a variety of scents that evoke the winter season like cinnamon, pine and vanilla. Swap out everyday products like hand soaps for those with seasonal scents and for a natural fragrant infusion, simmer a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange peels on the stove.
5. Personalize With Seasonal Décor
The holidays are all about creating special moments and memories. Add personalized touches to make your space unique to you, such as family photos and personal ornaments. Switching your artwork for the season can also provide a refreshing change and make your home feel more festive.
6. Colour Palette
Lean into a warmer colour palette for winter. Deep rich tones like oxblood and burgundy feel festive and inviting for the holidays, without feeling overdone. These colours can be incorporated through textiles, décor and even wall art to create a cohesive and cosy look throughout your space.
7. Embrace Layered Textiles
Think plush throws, soft blankets and extra cushions. Opt for materials like wool, cashmere, velvet and faux fur to enhance the warmth and cosiness of your space. Layered rugs can add texture and warmth to your floors, making every step feel soft and luxurious.
8. Enhance Your Fireplace Setup
Make the fireplace the focal point of your living area. Arrange seating to face the fireplace and include a basket of logs and kindling for a touch of rustic charm. If you don’t have a working fireplace, you can achieve a similar effect with a cluster of candles or a decorative electric fireplace.
With these simple tips, you can easily transform your home into a winter haven perfect for quiet moments and intimate conversation. Embrace the winter season by making your home a sanctuary of warmth and comfort. Happy hibernating. OH

CONTEMPORARY
family living
The latest model from Cardel Homes is situated in the rapidlyexpanding Ironwood community of Riverside South. It strikes the perfect balance between modern elegance and functionality, with an intentional design that caters to family living. Continued on page 34
STORY BRIANNE SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY GORDON KING
aAS ONE of the larger models available, The Grayson layout boasts up to 3,058 square feet of thoughtfully designed living space. The model, which opened to the public in early August, drew an overwhelming response, with more than 500 groups touring the home on the opening weekend.
Vivien, Cardel’s new home sales consultant, was thrilled with the turnout. “We couldn’t believe how many people walked in on the opening weekend,” she says. “We were swamped in a good way.”
The open-concept layout on the main floor is one of the home’s standout features, allowing for seamless transitions between the kitchen, dining and living areas.
“When you’re in the kitchen (Deslaurier Custom Cabinets Inc.) you can see everything that’s going on in the home on the main floor. It’s very open,” says Vivien.
Kendra has been a corporate designer with Cardel for 17 years. She designed the interiors for five of the new models that opened in Barrhaven, including The Grayson. The inside of the home is meant to cater to families looking for a balance between modern aesthetics and cosy, inviting spaces.
“It’s a comfortable palette, a light fresh white tone, like sand terracotta, kind of modern California desert but still appealing to everybody,” says Kendra.
Cardel Homes is well-known, not only for their innovative and functional model homes, but their customizable options, giving each home the ability to be uniquely one-of-akind. The Grayson ranges in size and layout to accommodate three to five bedrooms and two-and-a-half to three bathrooms, with loads of customizable interior options and add-ons.
Vivien says The Grayson’s combination of practicality and beauty has made it a favourite among potential buyers. “We continue to hear the same feedback about the quality of workmanship and the functionality of the floor plans.” Continued on page 36

This functionality extends to the upper floor, where a versatile bonus room provides a quiet, private retreat – perfect for use as a gym, playroom, or an additional living area.
“People do use bonus rooms for so many different things,” says Claire, Cardel Homes’ marketing manager. “They may think, ‘I want a separate living area’ or ‘I want a gym,’ or ‘my kids can have a playroom.’ Same thing with that main-floor bedroom, you can also easily convert that to an office space.”
The primary bedroom is full of earthy tones and texture. Dark textured wallpaper paired with chocolate-brown panelling bathe the room in a warmth that stands out from other rooms in the house but also blends seamlessly. For Kendra, this was a favourite room to design.
“That was a fun room to do the panelling on the wall with the wallpaper above, and then just that chocolate brown everywhere, mixed with the soft palette in the bathroom,” says Kendra. “I think it will really speak to buyers, they’ll see themselves living in that space.”
An upstairs bonus room can be used in a variety of ways, including as a second quiet living space.

This spa-like en suite is beautifully designed.
“THE TONE-ON-TONE WITH THE SUBTLE COLOUR DIFFERENCES FLOWS AND MAKES THE EN SUITE FEEL LARGER BY NOT HAVING ANYTHING POP OUT AS A BOLD COLOUR CONTRAST.”
The primary en suite is another feature that has garnered rave reviews with its luxurious spa-like design offering homeowners a peaceful retreat at the end of the day. Kendra says the aim of the bathroom design was to create a timeless retreat that pulled from elements of the bedroom.
“The tone-on-tone with the subtle colour differences flows and makes the en suite feel larger by not having anything pop out as a bold colour contrast,” she says. “Everyone can use it every day. You’re not going to tire of it. It’s timeless with the warm wood tones and neutral sandy palette.”
The Ironwood community, located in Riverside South near Manotick, offers an idyllic setting for families seeking a balance of tranquility and convenience. With easy access to local amenities, schools, parks and shops, residents can enjoy a peaceful suburban lifestyle while remaining just 25 minutes from downtown Ottawa. As the Ironwood development grows, it will feature 499 homes in total, including 248 single-family homes and 251 townhomes, providing a variety of housing options for different family sizes and preferences.

MIDDLE RIGHT: A beautiful stand-alone tub and a spacious shower enhance the spa-like experience of this en suite bathroom. RIGHT: A bright colour palette that keeps the space airy and open enhances this spacious basement living area where natural light is maximized.
The Grayson’s design offers versatility for different family needs. A main-floor bedroom as well as a basement bedroom option allow for both communal living and privacy, making it adaptable for multi-generational families and various life stages.
When purchasing a Cardel home, buyers are assigned a design consultant who works with them to personalize their home by selecting finishes like flooring, hardware and other design elements. Buyers can choose to upgrade various options, such as adding hardwood flooring (Athens Flooring) in areas where carpet is standard. The consultant guides buyers through these selections, helping create a tailored space that suits their preferences and budget.
With The Grayson also available in Cardel’s Rockland location, this spacious and functional model is an excellent choice for families looking for a home that offers both style and substance. “This house just flows so nicely,” says Claire. OH

Krumpers Solar Blinds combines the perfect elements of nature, filter and insulator to create comfort, beauty and energy efficiency. Krumpers allows you to transverse the seasons without sacrificing the view or the light.

CREATE A STOCKING
Filled With Santa-Approved Household Gifts
Stockings can be one of the trickiest parts of holiday gifting! Why not try something different this year and curate a collection of small household items rather than picking up the usual stick of deodorant, a pair of socks and a candy cane? Here are 10 useful gifts to tuck into a stocking, perfect for a partner, parent, friend or young adult.

Described as featuring biscotti fur, a frothy cream lid, chunky corduroy holder and toffee corduroy boots, this grande is a stylish conversation starter.
5
Holiday housewares
Look for cute seasonal items that are easy to pack. For the eco-conscious recipient, consider this zero-waste cloth that replaces paper towels and harsh cleaners. Simply add water, and it effortlessly lifts grime from almost any surface! It’s lint-free, streak-free and perfect for windows, stainless steel, countertops, electronics, vehicles, and even the mantel where this stocking will be hung.
Not your average kitchen scrubbers
Cleaning products might sound boring, but not in this stocking! It doesn’t get any better than something named the World’s Best. If your recipient loves their kitchen to sparkle at all times, include a scrubber appropriate for use on non-stick cookware, stovetops and even vegetables.
9
Portable knife sharpener
This innovative kitchen gadget, endorsed by celebrity chefs, comes with a 10-year guarantee. It sharpens straight and serrated blades while keeping your hands safely protected – ideal for any home cook who spends a lot of time chopping.

This guitarshaped multi-tool is both thoughtful and practical, perfect for music lovers or musicians who appreciate a versatile tool for small household tasks like tightening screws, cutting or opening bottles.
10
Elevated snacks
A food item is essential for every stocking. Skip the annual chocolate bar and opt for something more comforting and indulgent. Traditional, buttery shortbread cookies with a hint of maple crunch and a delightful salted-caramel hot chocolate mix will satisfy all those sweet seasonal cravings. OH
This classic Bread Pudding with Spiked Sauce is the ultimate comfort dessert. Soft, custardy bread pudding is baked to golden perfection and drizzled with a warm, boozy rum sauce. It’s the perfect indulgence for cosy winter nights or holiday celebrations.
INGREDIENTS
BREAD PUDDING
2 cups milk
2 Tbsp unsalted butter, plus more for buttering dishes
¹/³ cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
1 loaf of brioche bread, cut into cubes
½ cup raisins (optional)
SPIKED SAUCE
½ cup sugar
1 Tbsp allpurpose flour
Pinch of salt
1 cup whole milk
¼ cup cream
2 egg yolks
2 Tbsp butter in several pieces
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
2-3 Tbsp rum or bourbon
INSTRUCTIONS
BREAD PUDDING
Preheat oven to 350°F and grease six 8-oz ramekins or one 9 by 13-inch baking dish.
In a saucepan, whisk together milk, butter and sugar. Heat over medium heat until melted. Once cooled, whisk in eggs, cinnamon, vanilla and pinch of salt.
Spread the cubed bread in the greased baking dish or in ramekins. If using, mix raisins into the bread. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, pressing the bread down gently to ensure it’s fully soaked. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the centre is set.
SPIKED SAUCE
In a saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour and pinch of salt. While whisking, add milk, cream and then the egg yolks.
Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, whisking almost constantly, paying attention that no build-up happens along the bottom edges of the pan. Continue to simmer gently for several minutes until sauce is thickened and coats the back of a spoon.
Remove from heat, and while continuing to whisk, add butter, vanilla and rum or bourbon (if using). Push sauce through a strainer.
Pour sauce over bread pudding to serve. OH

The new year always feels like a good time to reflect on your health and decide what’s working, and what’s not. If you’re looking to make small changes that can have a big impact on your physical and mental health, consider some of these daily habits.
You might already be doing some, or most of these, which is great! If you’re starting from scratch, pick one or two habits to focus on at first and build from there.
1. LIMIT SCREEN TIME
Staring at a screen for prolonged periods has no positive effect. Try to find time in your day to step away from the screen and replace it with another activity.
2. GET OUTSIDE
Yes, even in the dead of winter, get outside at least once a day. Sunlight and fresh air benefit your mental and physical health.
3. FIND A NEW HOBBY
Hobbies are a great way to get out of your comfort zone, flex your creative muscles and have fun! Plus, depending on the hobby, you might naturally embrace some of the above habits.
4. DAILY MOVEMENT
Find an activity you enjoy and do it daily. Walking, running, yoga, skiing, pickleball – it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you find something that prevents you from having a completely sedentary day.
5. HYDRATE WITH WATER
Your body is 50 to 60 per cent water, making it the fluid of choice when you’re thirsty. If you find water boring, try adding a sugarfree flavouring or infuse it with fruit. If you forget to drink during the day, try setting reminders. And invest in a water bottle to carry with you when you’re at work or on the go.
6. INCREASE YOUR FIBRE
If there is one nutrient to focus on in 2025, it’s fibre. Most people don’t get enough in their diet, and fibre does much more than keep us regular. It keeps us feeling full and supports blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Try to add a fibre-rich food at every meal and snack.
8. EAT BREAKFAST AND REGULAR MEALS
We’ve all heard the saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but honestly, there is some truth to it. Breakfast, especially one that’s protein-rich can keep you feeling full longer, help control your appetite during the day and reduce cravings. Breakfast is important, but don’t forget about other meals and snacks. Try not to go longer than four to six hours without eating.
9. PRIORITIZE SLEEP
Getting enough quality sleep is highly underrated. Poor sleep, even if it’s shortterm, can impact our immune system, food choices and overall health. For adults, 7-9 hours is suggested. Try to create an evening routine and sleeping environment that will promote good sleep.
10. CREATE A MORNING ROUTINE
7. PLAN AND PREP MEALS
Planning meals doesn’t have to take hours, but it can save you hours during the week. Plus, meal planning and prepping can help you make healthier food choices.
Set some time aside for yourself each morning to mentally prepare for the day. It might be journaling, stretching, reading or simply sitting in silence drinking your coffee. OH

Festive AND FUNCTIONAL DINING ROOMS
The dining area is somewhat of a conundrum. In many newer homes, it has been swallowed up by the open-concept main floor, with cooking, dining and living combined. Meanwhile, in older homes, the formal dining room often goes unused except for the occasional birthday, anniversary or holiday, when it gets dusted off and dressed to impress. I love the indulgence of a dedicated, stylish dining area, both in terms of the space itself and all that it brings. Whether yours is a dedicated room or a designated nook, here are some tips to ensure it’s ready for company, both during the holidays and every other day of the year!

DINING ROOM LAYOUTS FOR A FUNCTIONAL AND FABULOUS SPACE
A great dining area starts with the layout, to ensure the room can handle the hustle and bustle while still providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. If yours is an open-plan home, position your dining table in a way that naturally flows from the kitchen or living area. This setup allows for easy movement between cooking and socializing, ensuring you can stay engaged with guests while preparing meals.
In homes with separate dining rooms, focus on creating a balanced space. Place the dining table centrally, allowing enough room around it for chairs to be pulled out comfortably. Ensure there is ample space to accommodate traffic, especially if the space will include a buffet or serving area.
A rectangular or oval table can accommodate more guests, while a round table can create a more intimate setting. If you frequently host large gatherings, consider an extendable table or add a second smaller table to accommodate extra guests.
A sideboard or buffet table along one wall can serve as a dedicated area for food and drinks. This keeps the main dining table clutter-free and allows guests to help themselves without disrupting the flow of conversation. And when you’re not hosting, it serves as storage space. Place chairs or benches around the table with a mix of seating options to cater to different preferences and to create a more dynamic and inviting arrangement. If space allows, create a separate seating area with comfortable chairs or a small sofa for guests to relax before or after the meal.
FOCUS!
A well-chosen focal point not only draws the eye but also sets the tone and mood, making it a more enjoyable place for meals and gatherings. It can help define the style and personality of the space, whether it’s modern, traditional or eclectic. To create an effective focal point, start by identifying the most prominent area in the room, such as the wall facing the entrance or the ceiling above the dining table. Consider adding a bold piece of art, which is a wonderful way to add non-committal colour and a dramatic effect. Simply swapping out the artwork can transform the entire room’s ambience when you’re ready for a change.
I love the element of surprise in a room, so think beyond the usual, like a bold ceiling. Draw the eye upward with an eye-catching colour or a graphic paper to add texture and dimension. Incorporating architectural elements such as coffered ceilings, exposed beams or tray ceilings can also add a sense of grandeur and elegance.
Balance is key, so ensure that the focal point complements the overall décor without overwhelming it.
LIGHTING
Lighting has a three-fold purpose in the dining area: to illuminate for function, to act as a focal point and to set the mood. In this space, it can be bright and joyful, warm and romantic, dark and dramatic, or it can alternate between all three, depending on the function. For this reason, dimmers and layers of lighting are a must.
A statement chandelier or pendant light above the dining table serves as a focal point, adding a touch of elegance and festivity. Wall sconces or floor and table lamps can provide additional illumination, highlighting different areas of the room and adding depth. Candles or string lights added to the tabletop or buffet create a cosy, enchanting atmosphere.
Whether hosting large gatherings on festive occasions or casual everyday dinners, having a dedicated dining area also helps to carve out a time and a place to indulge in good food and great company, without any distractions. OH

This early 1900s heritage home in Vankleek Hill has been transformed for the holidays, becoming a festive Christmas retreat filled with cosy charm and seasonal cheer.
Holiday HOMESTEAD
Although Sue Pitchforth’s tenure as homeowner of this charming historic Vankleek Hill farmhouse began about a year ago, she believes her relationship with this home extends much further.
“I FEEL LIKE I HAVE BEEN HERE ALWAYS,” she says of the home that fits her perfectly. This home was originally built most likely in the early 1900s by a Vankleek Hill farmer for his sisters, who needed a place to live. It’s believed the sisters ran a secretarial school for women while they lived there.
Over the course of more than a century, the home changed hands numerous times, evolving with each new owner. It has served as both a family residence and a rental property, and at one point was nearly destroyed by a devastating fire. Today, it finds itself under the care of Sue, who considers herself the proud steward of its storied past.
Owners of historic homes share a sense of purpose, duty and fate that goes beyond the regular homebuying/homeowner relationship.
STORY HEATHER WRIGHT | PHOTOGRAPHY GORDON KING
In Sue’s case, she feels her path and the journey of this home were meant to intersect, at just this moment in time. “Everything happens at the right time, and I feel at peace here,” she says.
Sue says she always wanted to live in a century home and has always been a champion of heritage homes. She has sat on committees promoting education and preservation of historic homes.
Her love for history isn’t the only symbiotic aspect to her homeownership. Sue is a design professional, stager, decorator and owner of Smiths Falls’ pre-loved home décor shop Curated Finds Inspired For You, which focuses on unique and beautiful items to inspire homeowners to furnish and decorate their homes in a personal way. She also writes and appears on television. She has a wellrounded opinion about design, drawn from experience in the trenches.
Sue purchased the home after it had been completely redone in the wake of a devastating fire. Everything had to be removed and replaced in the home, except for a grand staircase that sits in the front hall (and the exterior brick, along with columns on the front porch).

OPPOSITE: It’s easy to imagine yourself sitting out on this cosy, inviting porch, watching the neighbourhood traffic go by.

“I wouldn’t change a thing,” she says. “The contractor did a wonderful job. There is a light and airy feel, with great energy throughout.”
Sue acknowledges the significance of the staircase surviving the fire and is humbled by what that represents.
“You think of all of the people, the families who have walked up and down this staircase over the years,” she says.
In quiet deference to the history of this home, and the hopes and dreams of the people who lived there, Sue has integrated the staircase centrally into the décor and hangs her own family gallery on the wall adjacent, fusing past with present.
Although the home is indeed historic, its current design is undeniably modern, with an L-shaped open-concept main floor with a kitchen built for entertaining, which Sue enjoys regularly.
Wood floors run throughout, infusing the home with warmth and tying the aesthetic together.
ABOVE: A festive tablescape, suited for a small space, yet full of charm and creative decorating. RIGHT: The grand wooden staircase is the only element of the interior that could be preserved after the fire.
Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, one of which Sue has converted to a dressing room/reading room, to address one of the greatest challenges in older homes – a lack of storage for clothing.
The primary bathroom is a serene retreat, featuring a deep soaker tub perfectly positioned beneath a large window that frames an unbeatable view.
Sue’s home is featured in the Vankleek Hill Christmas Home Tour, and she hopes her approach to holiday décor, as a professional decorator, will be both aspirational and inspirational for homeowners.
Her philosophy is additive, as opposed to subtractive, where homeowners infuse their year-round décor with special touches that signal the holiday, such as loads of twinkle lights and thoughtful, personal and celebratory decorations.
“I knew I did not want to do a traditional red-and-green Christmas style,” she says. She was also very mindful of the history of the home and says that holiday décor needs to be appropriate to each specific home backdrop, to make it effective.

Here, she “showcased the house, but slid things into the décor for Christmas, adding a Christmas vibe,” she says. “I included lots of lights, especially twinkle lights, and created vignettes everywhere.”
No matter the season, the ultimate test for any homeowner is to fall in love with your home repeatedly, and this is characteristic of Sue’s authentic relationship with her home.
“Every time I go away and come back, I pinch myself. I can’t believe it’s mine,” she says. OH

festive FELT TREES
TOOLS & MATERIALS
Felt sheets in colour of choice
Paper cones in sizes of your choosing*
Card stock for leaf template
Fabric pen or pencil
Fabric scissors
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
*You can purchase premade papier mâché cones or make your own with poster board.
HOW-TO
On a piece of card stock, draw a leaf in any shape you’d like; we’ve done a teardrop-like shape. Cut leaf out with scissors. This will be your template.
Place your leaf template on a piece of felt and trace around it with a fabric pen. Repeat this as many times as needed to fill the felt sheet. Cut out the leaf shapes from the felt using scissors. Repeat this step with multiple sheets of felt in different colours until you think you have enough to cover your paper cones. You can always cut more if needed.
Using a hot glue gun, begin gluing your felt leaves around the base of a paper cone. Position the first row of leaves so they hang over the base of the cone by ¼ inch or so. This will ensure the cone is fully covered and allow the bottom leaves to flare out around the base of the tree when it’s standing.
Begin gluing the second row of leaves, being sure to overlap and offset the leaves in the first row. Continue gluing rows of leaves until the entire cone is covered.
To cover the tip of the cone, cut a few leaves in the same shape as the others at about half the size. Glue the smaller leaves at the tip of the cone, similar to the other rows.
Repeat the above process until all of your paper cones are covered with felt leaves.
Now, find a place in your home to display your colourful trees for the holidays and enjoy! OH

HOW TO CREATE A GUEST ROOM THEY’LL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE
STORY LINDSAY THORNTON PHOTOGRAPHY NAT KAY
When it comes to hosting overnight visitors, a guest bedroom should be more than just a place to sleep. It should be a haven of comfort and warmth that makes your guests feel pampered and welcome. Here’s how you can create a guest bedroom so cosy and inviting your guests will find it hard to leave.
Creature Comforts
The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, especially in a guest room where comfort is paramount. Start by investing in a quality mattress that provides the perfect balance of support and softness. Even if your mattress is on the firmer side, a plush mattress topper can add a layer of comfort that feels like sleeping on a cloud. When it comes to bedding, think layers. Start with high-thread-count cotton sheets, as they are breathable and soft against the skin. Add a lightweight blanket or quilt, and top it off with a cosy duvet or comforter. Be sure to offer a variety of pillows – some firmer, some softer – so your guests can choose what works best for them.
A few decorative pillows and a throw blanket at the foot of the bed add a touch of style while offering extra warmth on chilly nights.
TIP: As much as we designers love pillows, don’t put too many on the guest bed, as most guests can get overwhelmed when trying to put them all back in your preferred position! We love a lumbar pillow or two or three accent pillows in a guest suite.
Create the Right Ambience
The secret to making anyone feel at home is to make everyone feel at home. Neutral colours and finishes go a long way in creating serenity for many.
Lighting also plays a crucial role in setting the right mood. I start with a soft, warm overhead light for general illumination. Supplement this ambient lighting with table lamps on the nightstands or install wall-mounted sconces on either side of the bed. These provide focused light for reading without being too harsh. Choose lamps with dimmers, which allow your guests to adjust the light to their liking. A small nightlight can also be a thoughtful addition, helping your guests navigate the room in the dark.
Thoughtful Staples
Take a cue from a memorable hotel stay, and strive to pamper your guests. Outfit the room with some basics: fresh towels and washcloths, placed either in the room or in the adjacent bathroom. Extra pillows and blankets should be easily accessible, perhaps stored in a decorative basket or ottoman. Consider adding a pair of cosy slippers or a plush robe for your guests to use during their stay. These small touches can make a big difference, especially on cold mornings. A water carafe and glasses on the nightstand, along with a few snacks can make visitors feel at home when they’re staying at yours.
Engage the Senses
Scents play a significant role in creating a welcoming atmosphere. A lightly scented candle or an essential oil diffuser can fill the room with calming aromas like lavender, vanilla or sandalwood, which are known to promote relaxation and sleep. Be sure to choose scents that are subtle and not overwhelming.
Seasonal fresh flowers always elevate the room, adding both a visual and olfactory appeal. A small bouquet on the nightstand or dresser brightens the space. If fresh flowers aren’t practical, consider a small potted plant.
Finishing Touches
Finally, consider some “extras” that will make your guest bedroom truly special. A selection of books or magazines on the nightstand offers guests something to read as they wind down for the night. A charging station for phones and other devices is a modern convenience that will be appreciated. Personal touches like a framed photo or a small piece of artwork can make the room feel more like home. If space allows, a comfortable chair or bench adds a place to sit and relax, further enhancing the room’s cosy vibe.
Creating a cosy guest bedroom is all about attention to detail. If done right, your visitors may never want to leave. But when they do, you’ll have a stunning space to indulge in, without ever leaving the comfort of home. OH
This Hintonburg duplex blends style and functionality, with a touching backstory. OPPOSITE TOP: A light-filled living space provides an inviting atmosphere for entertaining.
SORELLE HOUSE
STORY BRIANNE SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY GORDON KING
Nestled on a quiet street in Ottawa’s Hintonburg neighbourhood, the Sorelle House redefines duplex living, and what it means to age-in-place.
Designed by Kariouk Architects and built by Crossford Construction, the duplex was the vision of sisters Sandra and Franca, and Franca’s husband Mark, who all sought to build a shared home that would enable them to better support one another. Though Franca passed away last year, the duplex stands as a lasting tribute to their thoughtful approach – blending accessibility with independence, while staying connected to the community they love.
“We saw a lot of duplexes coming up in the neighbourhood and we thought, ‘wouldn’t it be really easy if we lived right beside each other,’ and be much more security based when someone was there,” says Sandra. “Franca and I would joke about it all the time.”
At the time, Mark and Franca were looking to downsize, and Sandra, who already owned the lot, proposed tearing down her home to build two new houses on the property. In 2018, they reached out to Kariouk Architects, impressed by their work on other homes in the neighbourhood.
ABOVE LEFT: Each unit has a rooftop balcony that provides gorgeous views of the Gatineau Hills and downtown Ottawa. LEFT: Sandra and her brother-in-law Mark in Sandra’s kitchen. Continued on page 84
In 2020 the building process officially commenced, with the homeowners moving in by 2022.
For Kariouk Architects, the challenge was to fit two homes onto a small lot. A flagpole arrangement was proposed, where the two units share a single driveway, with garages tucked out of sight. This design prioritizes pedestrianfriendly streetscapes, placing more emphasis on front lawns and greenery at street level, rather than pavement and garage doors.
“The homeowners wanted something different, not your average duplex model,” says Paul Kariouk, principal architect at Kariouk Architects. “That’s where the L-shaped model came in. They wanted it to look like one house but with two different interior personalities.”
Named the Sorelle House – sorelle meaning sisters in Italian – it’s a tribute to Sandra and Franca’s Italian heritage that highlights their different design preferences. Each home has about 2,000 square feet of living space, complete with a rooftop terrace that offers views of the Gatineau Hills to the north and downtown Ottawa to the east.
LEFT: The second floor of Sandra’s home serves as a home office and bedroom, flipping the traditional layout and putting her kitchen one floor above the bedroom.
BELOW LEFT: Sandra’s entryway makes a statement with bold windows and red accents, seamlessly tying the exterior colours into her home. BELOW: Sandra’s thirdfloor kitchen and living room were designed to maximize daylight and are where she spends most of her time.
Sandra’s home, positioned to face the street, was designed to maximize natural daylight and create a bright, open feel. Sandra, who spends most of her time in the living room and kitchen created by Handwerk Bespoke Kitchens, chose to place these main living spaces on the third floor for a brighter and more open atmosphere.
“Here, you have a sense of being able to see out among the neighbourhood, but also feel very private, and that was one of my criteria that I was hoping for in the planning phases,” says Sandra.
In contrast, Mark and Franca’s home sits tucked behind Sandra’s, offering a more sheltered and intimate setting, with a design that embraces a moody, atmospheric vibe. The layout follows more of a traditional floor plan with the kitchen, also by Handwerk, located on the second floor. A cosy den was added off the primary bedroom on their third floor, creating an intimate living space. For Mark, some of his fondest memories in the home were spent there with Franca, sitting by the fireplace (Hubert Fireplace Consultation + Design), reading and sipping tea together. In a heartfelt tribute to Franca, Paul and his team inscribed a custom surround for Mark’s fireplace in her honour.

A bathroom with light-toned materials matches the theme carried throughout the home.
“Paul let me know his office would like to do something so they came and took the surround away and came back with this,” says Mark.
“For me, this room really represents Mark and Franca because they were always reading. So this really sings to me that this is them,” says Sandra.
The project marked the first collaboration between Kariouk Architects and Crossford Construction. Despite the challenges of building during the pandemic and navigating the constraints of a small lot, both teams found the experience rewarding and are proud of the completed home.
“Paul’s team brought a lot of very cool, vibrant elements to the project, says Lindsay Nicol, president and founder of Crossford Construction. “The entire project happened in the heart of the pandemic. There were many issues in the supply chain, especially with a job like that with unique elements. So we had challenges, but at the end of the day we managed to keep things on budget and complete the job successfully thanks to everyone’s cooperation and help.”
RIGHT: Mark’s home, tucked at the back of the structure, was thoughtfully designed to offer a quiet escape from city life. BELOW: Mark enjoys catching some sun in his sheltered back patio. BELOW RIGHT: In contrast to Sandra’s bright and airy space, Mark’s home embraces richer, darker tones, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere.
The design prioritized the concept of aging-in-place, incorporating thoughtful features such as accessible showers, perforated staircases and elevators in each home to enhance convenience and mobility. The basement rooms are adaptable and can easily be converted into caregiver suites, a feature in mind for the homeowners as a means of independence and community connection as they age.

TOP RIGHT: Mark’s top floor includes a quiet den, a space filled with cherished memories from Franca’s time living there. ABOVE: A large, spacious kitchen offers ample space to cook and entertain.
“By designing homes that are accessible from the start, we create spaces where people can remain longer, avoiding the need for costly renovations or moving to assisted living down the road,” says Paul. “Financially it makes a lot of sense and takes pressure off of our healthcare system and homes for the aging. There’s also the emotional support of being able to stay in your home that’s really important.” OH
TOP LEFT: The layout of Mark’s space follows more of a traditional floor plan compared to Sandra’s, situating the kitchen on the second floor and the primary bedroom on the floor above. ABOVE:

How To Style An Enchanting WOODLAND TABLESCAPE
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse! Christmas critters have always had a certain charm. Embrace your whimsical side in an elegant way this season by creating a beautiful woodland table setting that will delight both adults and children at your gathering. From on-trend dinnerware and unforgettable flatware to rustic centrepieces and festive accessories, this tablescape is appropriate for winter dinner parties even after holiday entertaining ends.
EMBRACE NATURAL ELEMENTS
The woodland style has a timeless quality because of its connection to nature. When you’re deciding on items to include, opt for an organic feel with textiles like wood and linen in earthy colours like browns, greens and neutrals. Start by laying the foundation with a natural table runner, woven placemats, bark coasters, fresh or faux greenery, pine cones and handmade beeswax candles for a magical, moonlit glow.

TABLEWARE FIT FOR A FOREST FEAST
Add contemporary details to your woodland table. Choosing black dinner plates with a matte finish will modernize the natural look and provide an unexpected alternative to traditional white dinnerware. Plus, black has proven to be a top-trending colour selection in home décor this year. Pair your plates with a matte-black mug for continuity. Letting some personality shine through with fauna-inspired salad plates that complement the matte-black anchor pieces certainly won’t boar any of your guests! Gold flatware with black handles will complete one thoughtful aesthetic with a hint of gold creating that warm, special feeling you get during the holidays. For glassware, select a smoky, tinted colour that reflects the forest and is reminiscent of antique or vintage glass.
THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY CRITTERS
THE CENTRE OF ATTENTION
This is your chance to flex your creativity and build a unique centrepiece for your table. You’ll need boards for sharing small bites or charcuterie, chunky wood candle holders, themed tealight holders, winter-inspired metal lanterns, glass trees, fairy lights, fir candle rings, sprays and a vase. Sprawl these accessories down the middle of the table or curate them in a circle if you have a round table. Ensure everyone seated has something interesting to look at, like adorable countryside animals, preferably in little sweaters.
Think of all the animals that roam the forest across Canada and then find those figurines to snuggle into your centrepiece in various ways. Felted mice are as abundant as ever in gift stores, including charming dessert-specific mice that can be quietly added as a surprise during the final course of the evening. Planters that look like hedgehogs, clip-on birds or a moose in a cosy knit hat – the more the merrier! You can also incorporate critters into your paper napkin selection or individual edible table treats in the form of moulded chocolates.
By including these elements, you’ll achieve a cohesive and playful woodland tablescape that brings the beauty of nature indoors. It’s easy to adapt the setting to fit casual or formal occasions while maintaining the underlying charm. Just keep your eye on those critters! OH

Chocolate Hazelnut TART

This Chocolate Hazelnut Tart combines a crisp, nutty crust with a luscious chocolate ganache filling, all topped with toasted hazelnuts. This dessert is perfect for cosy gatherings or a special treat on a cool evening.
Ingredients
HAZELNUT CRUST
1 cup chopped unsalted hazelnuts, toasted
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 Tbsp sugar
½ tsp salt
½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
3 Tbsp ice water
FILLING
12 oz chocolate (I used a mix of milk and dark chocolate)
1 cup heavy cream ¼ cup butter
Instructions
PREPARE THE CRUST
Preheat oven to 350ºF.
Toast hazelnuts in a pan on the stovetop.
Using a food processor, add ¾ cup of toasted hazelnuts, flour, sugar and salt. Pulse together until reaching the consistency of coarse meal.
Add cubes of cold butter and pulse until mixture turns into pea-sized crumbs.
Transfer mixture to a large bowl. Using a silicone spatula or wooden spoon, slowly stir in ice water. Add only enough water to bring the dough together.
Using floured fingers or the bottom of a flat and lightly floured measuring cup, press the dough evenly into a 9-inch tart pan.
Bake with pie weights for 18-20 minutes.
Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to slightly cool as you prepare the filling.
PREPARE THE FILLING
Roughly chop the chocolate and place in a medium heatproof bowl.
In a pan, heat heavy cream and butter on medium heat until steaming.
Carefully pour cream and butter mixture over the chocolate. Stir to melt.
ASSEMBLE THE TART
Pour chocolate filling into the tart shell and smooth the top of the tart.
Decorate with leftover chopped hazelnuts (optional).
Let cool in the fridge for 1-2 hours, until firm. OH
