Our Friends Place Mission For over 30 years, Our Friends Place has helped young women break generational cycles of abuse, neglect, poverty, and homelessness through empowering self-reliance and independence. OFP’s award-winning Transitional Living Center (TLC) program provides a supportive home for young women who have experienced homelessness, lived in chaos, or aged out of foster care. Young women in the TLC program are required to be enrolled in class, be employed at a steady job, pay a portion of their earnings to rent and to their own savings account, and attend weekly Life Skills Lessons. Life Skills topics range from financial literacy, resume building, interview skills, conflict resolution, goal setting, good study habits, and healthy relationships to other aspects of healthy adult living. SOAR to Success is our non-residential outreach program that brings the Life Skills Lessons out of the TLCs and into high schools, colleges, and partner programs around North Texas. SOAR to Success is a mentoring program for young women teaching the life skills needed to build their own Strengths, Opportunities, Allies, and Resiliency to prevent them from becoming homeless.

Honorary Chairs

Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Burns, Sr. Pat Burns, Sr. and Roberta Burns both were raised in neighboring suburbs of Chicago. They met at the local ice skating rink and married in 1962. Bobbie was an elementary school teacher for one year before marrying Pat, and the couple wasted no time in starting a family. By 1967, Bobbie was a busy stay-at-home mother raising four boys and one girl under the age of 5, then adding twins in 1978. She relished the role of homemaker and was actively involved with their school, extracurricular activities, as well as her parish community. Their devotion to family continues to this day with their home-cooked Sunday night meals for all their children, spouses and grandchildren. Pat Burns, Sr. is President and CEO of Burns Controls Company. He founded the company in 1971 as a regional distributor for a fluid power firm. He and his wife moved their family to Dallas where Pat quickly established a name for himself and his firm as solid, quality-driven and customer service-oriented. The Burns are involved in numerous leadership and volunteer roles in Dallas and his parish community, including Legatus, president of the St. Rita Men’s Club, soccer coach and avid supporters of their 7 children and 11 grandchildren. In 1999, Pat joined a group from the Knights of Malta-Federal Group, Washington, D.C. This group was set up to “Feed the Poor” in Dallas, Texas. Pat became a member of the Knights and has continued this group to feed the poor in our Dallas community every Saturday for 20 years.

A Message from the Co-Chairs Dorinda Cavender-Akin, Suzanne Jaco, and Jill Svoboda

Suzanne, Dorinda, and Jill would like to thank the many volunteers and contributors who made tonight's event a success! Your gifts of time and in-kind donations for the Gala-Auction & Casino Night raise critical dollars to help Our Friends Place fulfill its mission. It takes all of us coming together, raising community awareness, and truly being voices for these young women to break the generational cycles of abuse, neglect, poverty, and homelessness. Thank you for the countless hours, calls, places visited, and for each dollar raised on behalf of the young women as they become self-reliant and independent.

Our Friends Place Success Stories Tamar

Tamar is a senior at North Dallas High School and part of Our Friends Place SOAR on campus to build her own Strengths, Opportunities, Allies and Resiliency. Before working with Our Friends Place, Tamar was unsure of her future and worried about leaving her home to pursue college. As a member of SOAR at North Dallas High School, she will graduate with the skills to succeed in college, build new relationships away from home, and feel safe being herself. Tamar has been accepted to university and is excited to start classes in fall 2019!

Kit

Kit was homeless when she came to Our Friends Place, but there was a waitlist to move in to our Transitional Living Centers. Our SOAR program was created for young women like Kit so they can get help, even when they have nowhere to go. Kit joined SOAR at our office and eventually moved in to one of our Transitional Living Centers. She has continued to participate in both programs, learning valuable skills and coming home to her own apartment at Our Friends Place. Today, she is building her future and helping her OFP roommates with the skills she learned at SOAR.

Tisha

Tisha is a resident in our Transitional Living Center program. To prepare for moving into her own apartment, Tisha joined Our Friends Place SOAR with Kit at the office. At SOAR, Tisha doubleddown on the life skills she needs to be successfully independent. She uses budgeting and the financial literacy training offered at Our Friends Place to meet her savings goals. Tisha is confident and prepared to move out of our Transitional Living Center this summer!
