THE CO-ETTE CHIT CHAT NOTEWORTHY NEWS FROM THE CO-ETTE CLUB

CO-ETTE CHLOE WRIGHT Chloe Wright, along with seven Metro-Detroit Teens, was selected as a Youth Ambassador for Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Protect Michigan Commission. On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, Chloe, Governor Whitmer, First Daughter Sherry Shrewsbury, Detroit Lions Radio Announcer and retired Lions Great, Lomas Brown, Jr. and the teens received their first Pfizer Vaccine and volunteered to serve as Protect Michigan Commission COVID-19 student ambassadors with the aim of encouraging their peers to get vaccinated. The event took place at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

SPOTLIGHT: CASS TECH HS VIOLINIST LAUNCHES COMMUNITY PROGRAM FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS ACCOMPLISHED SOPHOMORE, ISABELLA VESPRINI, RECEIVES GRANT FOR “STAY ACTIVE INSIDE” PROGRAM

Who is your role model? My mom, she’s always by my side and pushes me to be the best version of myself.

Meet St. Clair Shores native, Isabelle Vesprini! A sophomore at Cass Technical High School, Vesprini is an accomplished violinist and vocalist.

“One of my favorite violin experiences was performing at Carnegie Hall with my Music School Touring group,” she said. “It was a once-in-alifetime opportunity and I am so grateful to have experienced something so wonderful.”

If Vesprini isn’t performing at Carnegie Hall, she is volunteering in the Co-Ette Club, running track, writing poetry, or working on her community program, “Stay Active Inside.”

“At the beginning of the pandemic I had a lot of time on my hands,” she said. “I wanted to do something to benefit my community while having to stay indoors.”

This past summer, Vesprini received a grant to launch “Stay Active Inside” and currently works with Detroit youth. Incorporating her love for music, she virtually assists other young violinists by practicing with them to ensure they stay entertained and motivated.

“On my private Facebook page, I offer weekly storytime, arts and crafts, and even send family-fun packages,” she said. “I will soon be expanding my program to be able to children all over Michigan.”

Outside of working with her program, Vesprini participates in the Co-Ette Club. A leadership club for young girls, members are invited by invitation only.

“My favorite memories during my first year in the club, which have been virtual due to COVID19, are the opportunities I’ve had to bond with my club sisters,” she said. “I still haven’t met most of them but we’ve all gotten so close.”

Vesprini aspires to attend Spelman College and study in their music therapy program.

She hopes to become a Music Therapist and have her own practice.

“Music is something I’ve always been passionate about and using it to help others in my future career would be amazing.”

CO-ETTE ALUMNA JIA COBB Women of Change #BREAKING NEWS: The Senate has confirmed Jia Cobb to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. With her confirmation, Judge Cobb is now only the fourth black woman ever appointed to this court. Jia graduated out of the club in ‘98 from Mercy High School and went to College at Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill were she majored in Political Science.

The Annual Chocolate Hour is always a festive event held on the fourth Sunday in January. This event has a dual purpose—to honor the new Miss Co-Ette and her Court and to honor the mothers of the Co-Ettes. The Queen and Court receive beautiful red roses and are thanked for their efforts to ensure the Club’s philanthropic goals by raising the highest amounts of funds for charity. This event is very heartwarming. Each member introduces her mother to the attendees and tells her mother how much she appreciates the love and support that her mother has given. This year, we enjoyed inspiring remarks by two Co-Ette Alumnae and current college students, Minyara Willingham and Rileigh Foster.

This is a full day of events. The prospective members, also known as “Prissies”, are at the end of their orientation process and ready to become members of the Club. They perform a line dance and each prospective member performs her individual talent. We enjoyed instrumental, vocal, gymnastics and modern dance performances as well as live art creations. Alumnae attend to enjoy the talent show. Ama Russell is shown with her sister, Diop, former Co-Ette president, who was recently named Miss Spelman. The advisors like to show off their Co-Ette shirts from their days as members. Advisor Carrie German-Wright wears a favorite Club sweatshirt from the 1980s.

When the prospective members become new members on this day, it’s time to elect officers for the upcoming year. We listen to campaign speeches, watch campaign videos and vote on the officers. This is a very important annual event for our members who step up to take leadership positions in the Co-Ette Club, vowing to do their best to ensure that our goals of volunteerism, philanthropy and leadership development for the 80 years of the existence of the Club are met or exceeded.

Annual Michigan Opera Theater Performance & Pre-Opera Party APRIL (A

Since 1941, the Co-Ette Club and its prospective members have annually spent an event at the opera, with an elegant pre-opera party. We dress elegantly and enjoy a delicious meal while listening to a presentation by a community outreach representative—often by the co-founder of the Michigan Opera Theater, Mrs. Karen DiChiera. This year, for the second time, the event was virtual. We enjoyed a talk by Arthur White and Andrea Scobie, administrators at the M.O.T. and by mezzo-soprano opera star, Raehann Bryce-Davis. She talked about her career and about the popular opera, George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”. Then, we enjoyed excerpts from the opera including the most famous song, “Summertime”. The evening was both educational and enjoyable. Many of the operas that the Co-Ette Club has attended through recent years are listed here.

Co-Ettes, advisors and prospective members enjoy getting dressed up in colorful dresses, hats and gloves every year to attend the elegant High Tea. We hear a presentation by the High Tea Committee on the history of the High Tea and Tea Etiquette. We play games testing our knowledge of the High Tea and the Big Sisters and Little Sisters have another opportunity to bond. We enjoy delicate refreshments of tea sandwiches, scones, pastries and herbal teas. This year’s delicious refreshments were provided in gift bags given to each member and adult leader.

The Graduation/Installation Event is one of the most moving events of our club year. At this Club year-end event, we bid farewell to our seniors, formally install our new members and install our new officers for the upcoming year. We recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of our seniors and wish them well in college. Our new members are welcomed into our sisterhood in a meaningful ceremony and are given the Club bracelet by their former Big Sisters. Our officers are sworn in. It is sad to see our seniors leave, but we are always encouraged by the enthusiasm of our new sisters who will ensure the success of our Club in the future and of the new officers that will lead the Club through the upcoming year.

A very special part of this celebration was an inspiring talk given by Daisha Martin, Co-Ette Alumna, daughter of Co-Ette advisor Dr. Crystal Martin, and an accomplished violinist who recently received an advance degree from Harvard University at the top of her class!

Always A Lady Sydney Lee 2021-2022 Chapter Journalist The Co-Ette Club was founded in 1941 by Mrs. Mary Agnes Miller-Davis. Mrs. Davis created the club to develop teenage girls into wellmannered, cultured and empowered women who could make a difference in society. For 80 years, The Co-Ette Club has been helping teenage girls to develop leadership skills and engage in philanthropy, as well as to perform volunteer work and create sister-like bonds that last a lifetime.

Ladies that join this club are transformed into determined leaders who are ready to take on any obstacle. By using the many skills the club has taught them, the young ladies will be able to achieve whatever they put their minds to. The Co-Ette Club molds ladies with exceptional values.

"Creating" A Co-Ette The journey to becoming a Co-Ette begins in February at our annual Open Meeting for prospective members. At the meeting, prospective members learn about the goals, traditions, and history of the club. After learning about the club, the prospective members can enjoy delicious ice cream sundaes while socializing with the current members. Although this event was held virtually this year, the prospective members were still able to learn about the club and the expectations of its members.

Volunteerism Volunteerism is a key value of The Co-Ette Club. The Club’s young ladies are expected to give back to the community, and it's what we do best!

Each year, Co-Ette’s are required to perform a minimum of 24 hours of voluntary service. This year, the majority of Co-Ettes were able to receive their needed hours by volunteering in person while social distancing, or virtually with many different organizations in the Metro Detroit area.

Many young ladies tend to go above and beyond by completing over 50 hours of service! This accomplishment is rewarded at the Charity Ball with the prestigious Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council.

Giant Step Teen Conference Each year, in October, the Co-Ette Club participates in the Giant Step Teen Conference held at Wayne State University. This conference brings teenagers from diverse backgrounds to have meaningful discussions about current issues and common problems in our world today and how we can make a difference. Our duties as Co-Ettes include facilitating group discussions, hosting, participating, and helping with any other miscellaneous tasks. We also traditionally contribute $1,000 to the Giant Step Teen Conference which was founded by Mrs. Mary Agnes MillerDavis, also the founder of the Co-Ette Club. Unfortunately, the Conference was canceled for students this year due to COVID-19 related issues.

The Co-Ette Club is ready and excited to contribute to the Conference for years to come!

Michigan Opera Theater Traditionally, in springtime, The Co-Ettes, advisors, and prospective members meet in semi-formal attire to attend an opera production at the Detroit Opera House. Before the performance, we gather to have a fun and culturally informative Pre-Opera Party. We held both events online this year and still had a blast! This year, we thoroughly enjoyed a performance of George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”. Co-Ette’s also played fun virtual opera-related games throughout the enjoyable evening.

Chocolate Hour At the beginning of the New Year in January, we traditionally host our annual Chocolate Hour event to recognize the success of the fundraising drive. Additionally, at Chocolate Hour, Co-Ettes take the time to show their unconditional love and appreciation to their mothers. At this event, Co-Ettes enjoy their mothers’ company and bond with them deeply by doing different activities and listening to their sisters speak about their own mothers. Both mothers and daughters especially enjoy the many delicious chocolate treats offered at this event while having a wonderful afternoon together.

Charity Ball The most anticipated event of the year is the Club's Annual Charity Ball! Held on December 26, the Charity Ball is an event where guests learn about the Co-Ettes’ incredible contributions to the community. At the ball, each Co-Ette is presented and honored for her outstanding fundraising efforts. The Co-Ette who raises the most money for charity is crowned “Miss Co-Ette” for the upcoming club year. The money raised from the young ladies is donated to many charitable organizations like the NAACP, American Red Cross, and the Detroit Public Library Foundation.

Following the presentations, the ladies and their guests dance and socialize all night. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Co-Ette Club will be again be holding the Annual Charity Celebration as a virtual event to celebrate the Co-Ette Club's 80th anniversary!
