THE CO-ETTE CHIT CHAT NOTEWORTHY NEWS FROM THE CO-ETTE CLUB

CO-ETTE LIEUTENANT WHITNEY GOLDEN MOREY DAVIDSON United States Navy Supply Corps Officer It was evident that Lieutenant Whitney Golden Morey Davidson was a skillful leader as a Co-Ette in the early 2000s. She was an excellent member and held the prestigious position of Chair of the club’s Junior Board of Directors from 2010-2011 when she graduated from Mercy High School. Today, she is an officer in the United States Navy.

SPOTLIGHT: LT. WHITNEY GOLDEN MOREY DAVIDSON UNITED STATES NAVEY SUPPLY CORPS OFFICER

After high school graduation, Lt. Morey-Davidson was selected to attend the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Upon graduation in 2015, she was commissioned as a Supply Corps Officer in the United States Navy.

Since then, she has served on the USS KEARSARGE, USS GEORGE WASHINGTOON, and on the USS TRUXTON—on which she is currently serving.

As a supply officer, she is responsible for all logistics onboard from food service and ship’s laundry to ship’s financials, parts procurement and contracting. She says that her job is incredible and provides her with many opportunities to see the world! In fact, she just arrived in Duqm Oman and has been to Dubai, UAE, Bahrain, Spain, Jordan, France, Croatia and Greece (just to name a few).

The Navy will be sending her to graduate school as a full-time MBA student at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business while still on active duty and being paid for her time. She is offering current Co-Ettes to personally communicate with her about her career choice. She says, “It’s not for everyone, but it provides incredible opportunities and benefits!”

Finally, regarding her experience as a Co-Ette, she says, “I am grateful for the Co-Ette Club and all it has provided me —especially in regard to etiquette, societal interactions and public speaking. All these areas have served me well in a military career which demands poise and professionalism at the officer ranks. I am honored to be thought of as a Co-Ette alumna to be recognized.”

Scenes from the Metropolitan Detroit Giant Step Teen Conference (FOUNDED BY THE CO-ETTE CLUB FOUNDER, MARY AGNES MILLER DAVIS) TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2022 WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER

Giant Step is a conference for 9th and 10th grade students in metropolitan Detroit area public, private, charter and parochial schools. Its purpose is to promote social harmony through shared experiences. Table discussion leaders facilitate groups of 6 students each. Every table has a variety of ethnicities and students learn that they have more similarities than differences. The Co-Ette Club’s president, Corinne Jordan, presented a check for $2,000 towards this important annual event. This year’s keynote speaker was Co-Ette alumna and broadcast journalist, Amyre Makupson, Jr. She gave a very upbeat talk about her successful career journey as well as giving the attendees confidence that they, too, can achieve with hard work. After a delicious pizza lunch, table discussions and table reports, many participants exchanged contact information to keep in touch with their new friends.

Gabrielle Jones, "Future Co-Ette” and daughter of the Club C.E.O., was thrilled to attend the opera with the Co-Ettes Co-Ettes, prospective members and adult advisors gathered at the historic Michigan Opera Theater for the moving performance of a relatively new opera, “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X”, which was composed in 1986 by Anthony and Thulani Davis. It is based on the astonishing and often misunderstood life of the civil rights leader. Prior to the opera, attendees enjoyed a delicious meal and an informative talk given by M.O.T. Outreach personnel as well as a performance by an M.O.T. opera singer. This annual Club event provides the young ladies with exposure to the opera. For many, it is the first exposure and leads to a lifetime of appreciation for this art form.

Co-Ettes work hard all year developing leadership skills, volunteering and fund raising for charity. That doesn’t mean that they don't have fun!

A very enjoyable time was had by all in November when the members, dressed in “Co-Ettes are Forever” shirts, attended a showing, at the Emagine Theater, of “Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever” while munching on delicious popcorn and other treats. This was an incredible bonding event for the Co-Ette Sisters.

The Co-Ette Club’s Graduation/ Installation is an annual event that evokes emotions, memories, laughter and tears. Each graduate is honored for her accomplishments in the Club, in school and in the community. The most outstanding member(s) receive the Mary Agnes Miller Davis Certificate of Excellence. As we say good-bye to our seniors, we welcome and install new members.

This year’s guest speaker was Co-Ette alumna, Caitlin Hill. She had an inspiring message for the graduates, giving guidance for success in college. She also expressed gratitude for all the skills learned as a Co-Ette that benefitted her in college. Then, the new members were installed in a moving candlelit ceremony and the new officers for the upcoming year were also installed. We were so sad to lose our seniors but looking forward to our next club year with new members and officers.

The club was founded in 1941 by Mrs. Mary Agnes Miller Davis on the tenets of serving the community, offering cultural experiences to members, and teaching young ladies etiquette, volunteerism, philanthropy and leadership skills.

Ladies leave this club with sisters, mentors, valuable skills, and experiences that shape them into successful adults like the women before them! The Co-Ette Club has impacted the City of Detroit for 81 years through the impact its training has on its members, who in turn, share their dedication to civic contribution with their respective civic and social circles. The impact of Co-Ettes is extensive and the club shall continue, as all great things do!

A Bud Begets a Rose Becoming a Co-Ette is a privilege, and as such, there is a membership process in which every prospective member must participate. Prospective members begin this process at Open Meeting in February where they meet Co-Ettes and advisors, learn about the club and its history, and enjoy an ice cream sundae. Open Meeting is the perfect time for girls to begin to see what the club has to offer and to meet girls who may become their sisters for life!

Serving Detroit A major tenet of what it means to be a Co-Ette is volunteerism. The service Co-Ettes provide to metro Detroit is a source of great pride. Each Co-Ette must give a minimum of 24 hours of service to a required Co-Ette-aligned organization and to other non-profits of their choice. Our community service is performed with the specific purpose of improving the quality of life of Metro Detroit citizens. Popular places Co-Ettes volunteer are Motor City S.T.E.A.M., Summer in the City, and the NAACP. Volunteering together not only benefits the community, but also serves as a significant bonding activity in which the girls engage through the club!

Giant Step Teen Conference This year, the Co-Ettes had the pleasure of attending the Giant Step Teen Conference in person. Because of the covid pandemic, the popular conference had not been held since 2019.

The Giant Step Teen Conference was founded by Mrs. Mary Agnes Miller Davis, the founder of the Co-Ette Club. Its purpose is to bring together diverse youth and allow them to converse with one another and learn about each other. In a world with so many different voices, Mrs. Mary Agnes Miller Davis wanted to bring youth together to celebrate these differences and their likenesses and to get to know other cultures, promoting understanding among those of varied ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. During the conference, Co-Ettes participate in the table discussions and serve the attending youth by seating participants, facilitating conversations, serving lunch and helping with clean-up after the conference. The Co-Ette President presents our annual club donation at the conference. This year, we donated $2,000! This conference was especially meaningful as the keynote speaker, noted television news broadcast journalist, Amyre Makupson, Jr., and the emcee, Detroit area artist, Kay Willingham, were both former Co-Ettes.

Co-Ettes and Culture: The Opera The Opera is a major event for the club and includes two parts: the pre-opera party and the opera itself. The pre-opera party is the time to gather, learn about the opera and socialize before the opera starts. Prospective members and Co-Ettes alike enjoy food and drink! This is followed by the opera, and Co-Ettes sit back and soak in the culture that this experience offers! The Opera is an special club event where CoEttes and perspectives alike come in their best semi-formal attire! We enjoyed the opera, “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” this year.

Chocolate Hour Chocolate Hour is an event where Co-Ettes show their respect and admiration for their mothers! In addition, the Queen and her Court are honored for their exceptional charity fund raising. In a moving portion of the program, each Co-Ette tells her mother or female relative what she means to the member. Then, delicious chocolate treats are served, giving the event its name! This event is held in January, and it is a wonderful way to bond in the New Year!

Charity Ball Charity Ball is the culminating year-end event of the volunteering and fundraising efforts of Co-Ette members. This event is the crown jewel of the club year, and members do the bulk of planning and coordinating for this event, creatively making it more unique, meaningful and entertaining each year! At Charity Ball, each member, in her best ball attire, is presented in a formal ceremony. The Queen is crowned and her Court members are recognized for their exceptional charity fund raising. The funds raised for Charity Ball are donated to charities and organizations that benefit our community, such as the NAACP, American Red Cross, Gleaners Community Food Bank, the Detroit Public Library Foundation and Motor City S.T.E.A.M.
