Elijah - The Wandering Prophet

Page 1

King ahab’s palace.

King Ahab, the altar you ordered... It’s gonna be up on that hill.

King ahab was a king who did evil in the sight of God.

It will definitely please our God baal.

Ah, Good. Then I can see it from here.

Suddenly, the palace doors are flung open...

huh?!

King Ahab.

As surely as the lord god of israel, lives -

Until I give the word.

The god I serve - There Will be no dew or rain during the next few years.

Who was that? it’s e-Elijah, My lord.

eliwhat!?

WHodoeshethinkheis!?

Hmmh... We can’t suffer a drought. our economy will suffer. And our crops...

Uh... I think he’s a tishbite! Some prophet of God, i suppose?

You guys.

Double the amount of sacrifices made to baal!

I want more altars built too!

I will provide for you.

Elijah, Hide in the Kerith brook.

RAVENS do not even feed their own young, yet they brought me food!

WOW, GOD, AS YOU PROMISED, SO IT CAME TRUE!

However, as the drought continues...

Yet, I will still put my faith in You.

God? The stream is running dry...

You have always taken care of me...

sending ravens every morning and evening and giving me water.

I know you haven’t forgotten me!

but for now... I’m really sleepy. I think I’ll take a nap!

I will trust in you.

ELIJAH!!

But Lord!

I have instructed a widow there to feed you.

That place is full of Baal worship! It’s the homeland of that terrifying queen jezebel!

A widow!? But Aren’t widows very poor?

Nonetheless, Elijah trusted God. He began his 90-mile trek to ZAREPHATH .

Excuse me...

How can I turn him away?

Please, could you give me some water?

HUH? Water?

We’ve barely enough for ourselves, but this man looks like he’s dying of thirst...

Hold on...

Well...

Please! And some bread as well!

I don’t have any bread. Just a bit of oil and flour left.

My son and i, this is our last meal together...

We have no other means to get food.

Just make some bread and the God of Israel says that your oil and flour will be enough!

Don’t be afraid ! !

Definitely, until the rain comes again! Trust me!

Alright, We could try, i guess... follow me.

I wonder if we will really have enough. I hope this man isn’t lying to me...

Mom! I think this guy is really from God!

It’s amazing! how do we still have oil and flour after all this time?

Yes! we’re well taken care of now.

But some time later, The widow’s son fell seriously ill...

Here, Son...

I’m so cold...

You’ll be better soon, don’t worry!

Shh... get some rest.

Huff puff
Mom...

WHY... WHY?

My poor boy

WHATHAPPENED!?

Thwaak

Have you come here to point out my sins and kill my son?

No... I’m sorry. But God -
There’s nothing you can do.
He’s already dead.

Please give me your son.

Oh God...This widow has been so kind to me...

But I know that nothing is too difficult for you...

Why have you done this?

There’s someone who misses you very much.

ELIJAH! GO TO KING AHAB AND TELL HIM THAT I WILL SOON SEND RAIN.

BYE!

IN THE THIRD YEAR OF THE DROUGHT...

obadiah in the desert

ALL I’M SEEING ARE DRIED FIELDS AND POOR LITTLE ANIMALS AND... SIGH...

HEY! IT’S A PERSON!

WHY WOULD ANYONE TRAVEL IN THIS HEAT!?

But hold on a second! I think i know that guy!

And when ahab comes and cannot find you, He’ll kill me!

But as soon as i leave, the spirit of the lord will carry you off!

So obadiah went to tell ahab that elijah had come.

Don’t worry! I will present myself to him.

What did you say!?

Ah, elijah! there you are!

SUCH a troublemaker. No sir. You are the troublemaker... You and your family. - Hm.

What did you say!?

You refused to obey God’s commands.

And even worshipped baal instead. I have a challenge for you. Hah! A challenge? how ridiculous!

The challenge.

Why are you all so fickle and unsure?

But if baal is god, then follow him!

If the lord is God, then follow him!

Alright... give us two bulls.

Whisper
mutter
Murmur

Makeway!

Priests of baal, you choose one and prepare it.

Then call on the name of baal, and I will call on the name of the lord.

The God who answers by setting fire to the wood is the one true god!

And then put it on your altar as a sacrifice. but don’t put any fire under it.

This looks better...

Oh this is gonna be easy. Baal’s the fertility and storm god.

- Hehe exactly!

He controls the rain and lightning! Setting fire to the wood is a piece of cake to baal!

Yeah. This guy picked the wrong test! hah!

Here’s more wood!

More to that side!

Baal, hear your prophets...

ANSWER O’ BAAL US!!

Morning. A few hours later. Noon...

look closely elijah!!

Psst... Where’s baal!?

Huff . . . puff . . . The sun is right up there now!

I think it’s gonna happen soon!

hey dude...

But why is nothing happening!?

Baaldoesn’twannahear that!! Shutit!

uh.. I don’t think you’re shouting loud enough.

Sorry!

Baal is a God, isn’t he?

Maybe he’s using the bathroom now and can’t attend to you!

Or maybe he’s on a trip... to somewhere fun??

I

think he’s

DAYDREAMING!

Okay then, maybe he’s taking an afternoon nap. you know how hot it is now!

Hey wait!

WHAT !? !

And so the prophets of baal shouted and cut themselves.

Grrr ... He’s right. Maybe we should shout louder.

Ouch! I wish baal didn’t require us to cut ourselves!

And we’ve been doing this for such a long time!

I KNOW! THIS IS SO PAINFUL!!

The prophets have been raving all afternoon, but still there was no sound, no reply, no response.

Yah, almost 6 hours and there’s still no response from baal!

We’re doomed if queen jezebel finds out!!

One for every tribe of israel!

He’s rebuilding the altar of the lord which is in ruins!

And a trench.

I’ll need 12 stones.

Fill four large jugs with water and pour it over the offering and the wood!

He’s serious about this!?

I don’t know, man.

Now the people have no choice but to acknowledge that the fire comes from...

true god! The one

Do the same thing again.!

This doesn’t make any sense! It’s so wet now!

It’d take a miracle to light it up!

It’s completely soaked as per your request, sir!

Sploosh

Thanks for your help!

Oh Man... I’ve got a really bad feeling about this.

If baal couldn’t do it, his god wouldn’t be able to either!

O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob...

What’s this!?

Prove today that I am your servant and that I have done all these at your command...

OLord, answer me!

Answer me so that these people will know that you, O Lord, are god! And that you have brought them...

yourself! Back to

krakk SZZZA boom

Everything’s burning up!

crackle

Even the moist wood and the water in the trench!

How is this even possible!? it’s god!

How dare you trick us!

Seize all the prophets of baal!

Ahhh!ruunn!!

The truth is out now!!

Don’t let any one of them escape! come back!

Phew! Alright, it should be coming anytime now!

rumble

Welcome, KingSHUT it!!

Gah! Stupid Elijah!
ARGH!

Hello, King ahab ~

ARGH!!

How did it go? It’s terrible! They killed everyone!

Hmm... Who killed whom?

Wellll... Uh...

Because of elijah! he managed to bring fire down!

He’s gonna pay for this!

Elijah huh?

YOU!

I want you to tell elijah that I’ll kill him by this time tomorrow!

And if I don’t, may the gods strike me. Y - Yes Queen Jezebel!!

Wow! It’s some food and a jar of water!

First, it was ravens!

Now an angel gives me food!

Munch
Munch

Get up and eat some more! The journey will be too much if you don’t. Okay, got

See you! Munch I shall rest and get up early tomorrow!

The next morning...

That should be where mount sinai is!

Alright! let’s get started on the journey!

The mountain’s huge but god’s bigger yeah?

Just a little bit more!

WHOA! FinallY, A good place to rest! It’s rather silent

I’m Scared, God...
Queen Jezebel is after my life...

I’ve served you devotedly, but the israelites have broken their covenant with you...

I’m the only one left and they want to kill me too...

They’ve torn down your altars and killed all your prophets!

I feel so unappreciated...

What have I done to deserve this?

Go out and stand before me on the mountain.

The Lord was passing by!

Crash!!

But God was not in the wind.

God! I’m sorry but What is this!?

But God was not in the earthquake.

Spark fwaah
God...?

But God was not in the Fire...

What are you doing here, elijah?

Fizzle

I’ve served you devotedly, but the israelites have broken their covenant with you...

They tore down your altars...

Killed all your prophets...

I’m the only left, and now they want to kill me too.

Elijah, Get your eyes off yourself.

To anoint two kings and train up elisha to replace you as my prophet...

I want you to go to

I will preserve 7000 others in israel...

Who have never bowed down to baal or kissed him.

Yes, my lord, I will do what you say!

-Seeyou!

So god graciously rebuilt elijah’s life out of the ashes of despair and continued to use him until he was Taken away in a chariot into heaven...

My father! My father!

Just an ordinary man

You’ve just witnessed some of the most amazing scenes and miracles in the Old Testament. A prophet who dared to defy a king. A dead boy raised to life. A dramatic stand-off between a pack of powerful priests and a solitary prophet. And all of this involving one man: Elijah.

Elijah! The prophet who was God’s messenger of destruction and salvation, who was never afraid to confront wicked leaders with the truth, and who didn’t even have to face physical death, but was taken straight up to heaven in a fiery chariot (talk about a dramatic exit!).

But there’s something even more amazing about Elijah’s life that this manga didn’t show you. And it’s this: Elijah, the great man of God, was . . . a nobody. No kidding! All the Bible tells us about him is that he hailed from Tishbe in Gilead. And that’s it. There is no record of any

“What?” you might say. “Elijah an ordinary man? No way!”

Oh yes. Take a closer look at the second half of the book of 1 Kings, and you’ll find a different picture of Elijah. Instead of a bold, fearless messenger of God, you’ll see a panicked prophet running away in fright from an evil queen.

You’ll hear him complaining about how no one is listening to him, even though he has so faithfully delivered God’s message. And you’ll see a man so filled with self-pity that he wants to give up being a prophet. In fact, he tells God, “Oh, just let me die.” In other words, you’ll see Elijah as what he really was—an ordinary man, just like any one of us.

So why did God choose Elijah? Precisely because he was ordinary.

It was an extraordinary time—of wicked kings and wicked people—but what God needed was not an extraordinary prophet. No, what He needed

What does this mean for us today? “Easy,” you might reply, “it shows us that God can use anyone.”

You’re right! But . . . there’s a lot more than that. Because Elijah was just like any one of us, there’re many more lessons we can pick up from watching his life and his walk with God. Through from God—and how it was his response such a legendary messenger of the Lord. We can learn from how Elijah prayed, and how he dealt with his doubt, his fears, and his weaknesses. And we can also learn about God—how He trained, fed, strengthened, and encouraged the prophet he had chosen.

So why not spend a bit more time with Elijah the Wandering Prophet? Read a bit more about him, and you’ll discover some valuable insights about yourself and God. It is an extraordinary lesson . . . for ordinary people.
