The Olympia Union Gospel Mission’s Jeremiah House (JH) Shelter Program provides structured support for men seeking to rebuild their lives. Through mentorship, counseling, and life skills training, participants work toward stability, sobriety, and self-sufficiency.

“When I think about ‘The Nest’ and how it has helped me, what comes to mind is the sense of community—knowing that I never have to face things alone. I have my sisters in Christ whom I can count on for support, and I’m able to support them in return. I’ve gotten back into church, and having a roof over my head is such a blessing. I’ve been able to maintain structure and accountability while living clean and sober in recovery. When challenges arise, we get through them—and we grow through what we go through. Connecting with the other ladies each morning sets a positive tone for my day. I feel so grateful and blessed to be part of this program.”

“The Nest” is our temporary shelter program for women, offering a safe and supportive environment where individuals can find refuge while they take steps toward permanent housing and lasting change.

Restoring Hope...Transforming Lives ~ Since 1995

May 2025 | VOL.29 NO.3

Gerald’s story is one of resilience, faith, and hope. As the first person to successfully complete our Jeremiah House “JH” Shelter Men’s Program, he has set an inspiring example for others seeking stability and renewal.

When Gerald first entered the program, he was facing significant challenges. But through the support and structure provided, he was able to secure steady employment, develop financial discipline, and begin saving money. Over time, his dedication paid off—he was able to purchase a car, which gave him greater independence and access to more opportunities.

With hard work and perseverance, Gerald eventually reached a major milestone: moving into permanent housing. His journey wasn’t just about financial and physical stability—it was also deeply spiritual. Throughout his time in the program, Gerald grew in his relationship with Jesus, finding strength and purpose in his faith.

Today, Gerald stands as a testament to what is possible with the right support and a willing heart. His success is just the beginning, and we celebrate his achievements as we continue to walk alongside others on their own paths to restoration.

Over the years we have learned that recovery is not just about breaking free from addiction—it’s about transformation. The most successful recoveries are those that are deeply connected to and guided by the Holy Spirit. True healing comes when an individual desires to be transformed, this desire cannot come from anyone else. Skip and I have a combined total of 40+ years of experience here at the Mission and we agree that this has always been the hardest part. Our desire for them to be sober and live a transformed life will never be enough!

If you are reading this and nodding along, you are not alone. Many people seeking recovery have spent years, sometimes decades, battling addiction. It takes years of living a transformed life in a supportive environment to truly escape addiction’s grip. But the good news is, with Christ at the center, lasting change is possible. We understand that almost everyone has been, or will be, impacted by addiction in one way or another in their lifetime, our goal is to provide some understanding and hope.

Recovery is more than quitting a substance—it’s about lasting transformation. It starts with detox and separation, but true healing happens in a structured, faith-based program that addresses the heart. Programs rooted in God’s Word guide individuals to uncover the root causes of addiction, face fears, and heal from past hurts, with the Holy Spirit providing strength.

Lasting recovery requires rebuilding. Participants learn to navigate life in sobriety while growing in faith, surrounded by a supportive environment. They gain the tools to make healthy decisions, restore relationships, and pursue meaningful goals. Whether it’s returning to school, finding employment, or overcoming personal struggles, they are never alone in the journey.

But recovery doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process that takes patience, perseverance, and the support of a loving community. The most successful transformations happen when individuals remain engaged in a Christ-centered environment where they are continually encouraged, challenged, and reminded of God’s grace. Small groups, mentorship, and regular fellowship provide the accountability needed to stay on course.

Isolation, however, is one of the greatest threats to sustained recovery. Loneliness increases the risk of relapse, and prolonged disconnection can undo months of progress. As Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” When individuals drift away from church, support groups, or positive relationships, it’s often a sign that they are vulnerable.

The body of Christ offers encouragement, accountability, and love. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.” Staying engaged with Christ and community brings healing and strength.

If you or someone you know is on the path to recovery, send us an e-mail at jessica@ougm.org for a list of resources. Remember, lean into Christ. Healing happens in relationship—with God and others. Through faith, support, and perseverance, lasting transformation is possible.

At the Olympia Union Gospel Mission, we know that summer can be a difficult time for children living in low-income communities. Without the consistency of school-provided meals, many children face hunger during the summer months. That’s why our Kids Summer Lunch Program steps in to ensure no child goes hungry.

Each weekday, we deliver nutritious lunches to children at local low-income apartment complexes. These meals provide not only nourishment but also a sense of stability and care during the summer break. Our dedicated volunteers and staff work tirelessly to make sure that every child receives a healthy meal and a friendly smile.

Through this program, we’re not just feeding bodies—we’re feeding hope. By meeting these basic needs, we help create an environment where children can thrive, grow, and enjoy their summer without worrying about where their next meal will come from. Your continued support makes this possible, and together, we’re making a lasting impact on the lives of these young ones.

Each of these program graduates has a powerful story of perseverance and faith. They have worked tirelessly to confront the challenges of addiction, restore broken relationships, and develop the tools needed for lasting change. They have stepped into a new season of life, equipped with hope, purpose, and a solid foundation in Christ.

We invite you to join us in celebrating their achievements and praying for their continued success as they move forward.
