Caring for Your 304 Stainless Steel Sink
A guide from Otti Australia
At Otti, we craft our sinks using premium 304-grade stainless steel known for its strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. However, like all stainless-steel products, proper care is essential to maintain its appearance and performance.
Why Rust Spots May Appear
While 304 stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, it is not completely immune to rust. Rust marks are typically the result of surface contamination rather than a fault in the steel itself. Common causes include:
• Metal Transfer: Items such as steel wool, cast iron cookware, or metal utensils can leave particles that oxidise.
• Standing Water or Residue: Tap water minerals, especially in hard water areas, can leave deposits that stain over time.
• Harsh Chemicals: Bleach, chlorine-based cleaners, and strong acids can damage the sink's protective layer.
• Improper Cleaning Habits: Allowing residue, sponges, or mats to sit in the sink traps moisture and contaminants.
Routine Maintenance Tips
Daily Care
• Rinse the sink thoroughly after each use to remove food, soap, and mineral deposits.
• Wipe dry with a soft cloth to prevent water marks or lime scale build-up.
Weekly Cleaning
• Use warm water and mild detergent with a soft sponge or cloth.
• Avoid abrasive pads or cleaners that can scratch the surface.
Monthly Deep Clean
• Apply a paste of baking soda and water, gently rub the surface, and rinse well.
• Optional: Apply a small amount of stainless-steel polish or olive oil to a dry cloth to restore shine.
