Il s’agit de neuf extraits, dont sept sont des adaptations de morceaux composés pour un cycle précédent (Album d’un voyageur, 18356), ainsi que des récemment composés N º 7, « Églogue » et N º 9, « Orage ».

La plupart des morceaux portent des notes poétiques sélectionnées par Liszt, généralement extraites du Pèlerinage du chevalier Harold de Byron, et d’œuvres de Schiller. Ceci est combiné avec l’utilisation de mélodies alpines servant à rassembler des troupeaux de vaches dans le N º 8 « le mal du pays ». Ces notes descriptives montrent que les paysages Suisses ont inspiré Liszt pour composer ce recueil. Lorsque Lizst décida de se retirer de la scèné pour concentrer son énergie à ses travaux de composition, il modifia bon nombre de ses morceaux précédemment composés afin d’en en atténuer la virtuosité criante de talents de claviste qu’il avait souhaité démontrer. N º 4 « Au bord d’une source », fut décrite comme l’un des plus meilleurs morceaux jamais écrit dans le but de vanter ses capacités techniques au piano.

Les nouveaux arrangements apportés à N º 6 « Vallée d’Obermann », est un parfait exemple de la maitrise technique de Liszt en matière de transformation thématique.

Liszt a composé ses douze Rhapsodies Hongroises entre 1846 et 1853. Ces œuvres de virtuose explorent les modèles rythmiques typiques des danses folkloriques de Hongrie, pays dont le compositeur était originaire. La Rhapsodie Hongroise N º 5 : Héroïde-élégiaque est lente et mélancolique tout du long. La Rhapsodie Hongroise N º 6 embrasse la structure de czardas traditionnel : après une introduction dramatique et un « Lassan » Andante, un « Friska » plein de vie vient conclure l’œuvre avec un panache d’une virtuosité remarquable.

L’Impromptu brillant sur des thèmes de Rossini et Spontini fut composé par Liszt alors qu’il n’avait que treize ans. Ce morceau utilise des thèmes tirés des opéras de Rossini, La Donna del lago (1819) et Armida (1817), dans la première partie, et d’Olimpie et Fernand Cortez de Spintini (1819/17) dans la seconde.

Pour la plupart des chansons de Liszt avec des textes en Français, il s’agit d’arrangements de poésies écrites par son ami Victor Hugo. Les arrangements originaux des quatre chansons entendues durant le programme d’aujourd’hui ont été faits entre 1842 et 1844. Cependant, elles ont toutes été révisées de manière conséquente quinze ans plus tard environ. Alors que certaines chansons des débuts de Liszt ont parfois été considérées avec mépris comme étant de la musique pour virtuose du piano avec un filet de voix, les versions ultérieures sont raccourcies et une relation, un dialogue, plus équilibré existe entre la voix et le piano.

Liszt écrivit son premier arrangement du Chant de Mignon en 1842, mais des modifications suivirent en 1854 et 1860 quand Liszt créa une troisième version pour piano, et une autre pour orchestre. Une caractéristique importante de sa ligne vocale est l’intervalle triton expressif et ambigu qu’elle présente.

Un genre qui se distingue par la déclamation de textes entre (et parfois pendant) les passages musicaux. Parmi les compositeurs qui ont contribué au développement du mélodrame, on compte Benda, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn et Schumann, entre autres. Liszt a écrit cinq mélodrames pour récitant avec accompagnement au piano, et un avec orchestre.

Ecrite en 1860, Der traurige Mönch (Le Moine triste) est le troisième mélodrame de Liszt. Il est un des travaux les plus fascinants de l’œuvre de Liszt, et il annonce les pratiques expérimentales innovantes, typiques du style de composition qu’il adopta plus tard. Une tonalité claire n’est jamais apparente puisque l’accent est mis avant tout sur la triade augmentée avec un ton ambigu. Les tritons répétés, caractéristiques de l’ouverture, sont opposés aux échelles de tonalité qui augmente lentement. Le texte lacinant en allemand est une ballade écrite par Nikolaus Lenau (1802-50).

Up-and-coming pianist Mauro Bertoli, has already earned praise for his “flawless technique and deep musicality” (Toronto Star). He has performed in recitals and as soloist with orchestras in festivals and major concert halls throughout Europe, North America, Israel, Brazil and China and in 2006 won the Giuseppe Sinopoli prize, awarded personally by the President of the Italian Republic. Born in Italy, Mauro is now a member of the Associate Performance Faculty at Carleton University in Ottawa.

Il a donné des récitals et joué comme soliste avec des orchestres dans des festivals et dans de grandes salles de concert en Europe, en Amérique du Nord, en Israël, au Brésil et en Chine. En 2006 il a remporté le prix Giuseppe Sinopoli, décerné personnellement par le président de la République italienne. Né en Italie, Mauro est actuellement professeur agrégé en interprétation à l’Université Carleton à Ottawa.

Soprano Monica Whicher performs with orchestras, opera companies and at numerous festivals in repertory from Purcell to Hatzis and Somers. She received a Dora nomination for her performance of the Countess in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro for Toronto’s Opera Atelier and is featured in the role of Télaïre on the Naxos recording of Rameau’s Castor et Pollux. Monica can also be heard frequently in broadcasts on CBC Radio.

A graduate of the Jette Parker Young Artists Program of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio, bass-baritone Robert Gleadow has rapidly built an international career singing with prestigious opera companies in repertory ranging from Mozart and Handel to Puccini and Strauss. Highlights of this season include return engagements at the Glyndebourne Opera as Leporello in Don Giovanni, and at the COC as the Sprecher in Mozart’s Magic Flute.

Mary was a calm and friendly presence for us all: staff, artists, volunteers, and audiences. We miss her very much.
