St. Edith Folk - The South East’s best new little folk venue!

We are pleased to announce the opening of St. Edith Folk, a new music club based at St. Edith Hall in Kemsing, Sevenoaks.

Situated on the High Street, St Edith Hall is a grade II listed building, built in the late 19th century which, during the first world war, was used as a hospital and manned by the Kent Voluntary Aid Detachment. The hall is a beautiful Victorian structure with a wooden barrel-vaulted ceiling, excellent acoustics and a lovely ambience. With an adjoining bar, well stocked with real ales and a full range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, the hall is ideally suited to live music of a folk nature.

St Edith Folk aims to bring the best in folk, roots and acoustic music from around the world to this lovely little corner of Kent. We are keen to feature both established national and international artists, and to give an opportunity to play to local musicians, both young and old.

The official opening party of the club will take place on Saturday 7 September. In line with our guiding principles, we will be showcasing a number of local artists to provide music for the evening, including the terrific Fate The Juggler, folk-rockers extraordinaire, a special acoustic set from D-n-K, who describe themselves as "a singer/songwriter partnership with a musical style crossing elements of folk, rock and pop music", and the talented David Mumford, who recently supported Joan Armatrading at the Assembly Hall in Tunbridge Wells.

There will be a free buffet available during the evening, we will have some exciting free gifts to give away, there will be a raffle with lots of prizes, and much more! And all this will be available for a ticket price of only £5.00!

Following the opening night we have a full programme for the Autumn and Winter and beyond, with gigs taking place on a bi-monthly basis. William Swift, Edge-tool manufacturer of Seal

in 1716 and carried on by generations of the Shoebridge family. There is evidence of other edge-tool manufacturers in the village, usually associated with the forges like Marchants in Church Street and the Swifts, who bought the Shoebridge business, had also owned a forge.

Why should such a specialised industry come to Seal? Location would have been paramount, with access to the raw materials of iron from the Weald and timber for the handles. The iron would have had to have been specially tempered. Seal also had a plentiful supply of water and was located on through routes, both east-west and northsouth, in the middle of an agricultural district. The several forges in the village would have provided the technical expertise for small manufacture, which would have led on to the more substantial Shoebridge business acquired by the Swifts.”

“The other manufacturing businesses were in the edge-tool manufacture. At one time, there were at least two, sometimes three, such businesses in the village, sometimes doubling as forges. It is not clear where their raw material came from, but they must have used a fairly well-tempered steel, probably imported from Sheffield or from the Black Country. The charcoal will originally have come from the local woods, replaced by coke after the gasworks was built in Sevenoaks.

These were of course much smaller-scale operations than the silk mill; apparently they employed only two or three men each.

But they supplied a wider market than the immediate surrounding villages. A 1906 obituary of one of the workers recorded that ‘Swift’s tools were famed in the woodlands of Kent, Sussex and Essex’. Eventually, in the 1920s, the last surviving edge-tool business moved away, to Bridgetown, Staffordshire, where Swift’s operated from ‘Seal Works’; its surviving catalogue lists an impressive range of tools. When the Seal site was sold in 1921, it still included an engine house and grindery, a forge, a furnace, a hardening hearth and a stable.”

The latter sale refers to that of the Wildernesse Estate which owned the Swift’s works. The full description of the business premises is ‘A Freehold commodious business premises known as Swift’s Engineering Works occupying an excellent position in the High Street, Seal and comprises an extensive brick and tile workshop, having cement floor and fitted with inspection pit and benches; a brick and slate engine house and grindery, with cement floor and company’ water supply laid on; a small enclosed coal yard; a brick and tile slate forge, with furnaces, and timber and tile extension fitted with hardening hearth; store room under the

same roof; a timber built single stall stable, on ragstone and brick foundation, with loft over and tile roof; a timber and corrugatediron coach house adjoining all standing in a spacious yard, together with a picturesque XVI century residence built of ragstone and brick.’ The sale document then describes the five-bedroomed house and garden. The rent for these premises was £40 a year and the expected sale price was £860.

“Swift’s engineering works, at the bottom of Seal Hill, had already developed out of the long-established edge-tool business...[which] eventually moved to the Midlands but in the 1920s and 30s, what remained was described as automobile and electrical engineers, and offered ‘smart well-appointed’ cars for hire and ‘house lighting installations’; they were also ‘experts in lawn-mower repairs’ showing that petrol driven mowers were already in use in the locality. The garage and workshop continued in business until well after the second world war.”

The garage and workshops were demolished and replaced by an office building. The 16thcentury house is still there.

I then looked at Bob Burgess’ website and found a history of edge-tool manufacturers in Kent and Sussex which had been written some years ago by Tony Bayfield. This included a list of edge-tool makers (42 from East Sussex, 13 from West Sussex and 15 from Kent). Intriguingly, Swifts was the only one described as a ‘Country Factory’ which implies that their manufacture was on a greater scale than the others which are described as ‘Blacksmith Makers of EdgeTools’.

In order to gauge the influence edge-tool manufacturing had on Seal, I looked at the census returns from 1841 to 1911. William Swift appears in 1841 as a 25 year old ‘journeyman smith’, the son of James Swift, a carpenter. In 1861 there were four men, including William Swift, and one woman, Anne Shoebridge, whose occupations were ‘edge-tool maker’, while in 1861 William Swift was recorded as an ‘edge-tool maker employing five men and two boys’. One family of edge-tool makers which is recorded throughout the census returns is Moyce with four generations (James, Edward, William and John) living in Seal for over 60 years, from before 1841 into the 20th century. In 1911 there were still three edge-tool makers including Solomon Roberts, originally from Deanshanger in Northamptonshire, living in Seal Works. He was first recorded in Seal in the 1881 census when he was lodging with William Swift, who by that time had retired, so presumably Roberts was running the business for him. William Swift died, age 70, in 1885.

A couple of weeks ago John Hider, who has lived in Kemsing since the 1940s, brought a garden tool in to show your editor, Julian, and to ask if there was anyone in Seal who could tell him anything about it. He has used it for years on his allotment and asked one of his neighbouring allotment holders, Roger, if he knew what the markings on it meant. These were the initials WS repeated with a crown in between them. Roger found out from an internet site, www.billhooks.co.uk managed by a Bob Burgess, that these marks indicated that it was an edge-tool manufactured by William Swift of Seal. Julian asked me if I could give John any further information.

First of all, I took photographs of the tool, two of which are shown.

Then I looked up what we had written in Seal: the history of a parish which I had co-authored with Jean Fox and Peter Mountfield. Three extracts are below.

“In the 19th century Seal became well known for the edge-tools manufactured by Swift & Co in their works on Seal Hill, on the right as you go out of the village t o w a r d s Ightham.

These were the hand tools associated w i t h agriculture, scythes, bills, axes, slashers and so on. The business had been started by William Shoebridge who was born in Seal

The pog blog - three simple questions

Last month at work we had one of those awful meetings where you have to introduce yourself in a vaguely entertaining way. With 80 people attending the meeting, we couldn’t do this at the meeting or we’d never have got to the work part. Instead, we were told to use the company intranet (which works a little bit like Facebook) We were asked three simple questions: 1) How long had you worked at the company?

2) A fact most people don’t know about me is‌ 3) Provide your favourite quote Simple they might be, but 2 and 3 actually caused me a few issues. I wanted to be me, but still look a bit professional. Quotes came from Mark Twain, George Bernard Shaw, Groucho Marx and Leonardo di Vinci. I looked through a couple of quotes books I have. I looked on line. I gave up with caring what other people thought and quoted Winnie the Pooh.

Next it was the fact most people don’t know about me. There is usually a reason that people at work don’t know the things they don’t know (read that slowly, it does make sense, honest).

My options were: • I don’t eat yellow sweets as I think they are ‘bad’. Except smarties and m&m’s as the chocolate cancels out the badness. - Even I know that would have probably resulted in a trip to occupational health to check my mental stability. • When I was two, my goal in life was to be a bin lady when I grew up. - I’m not known for being career driven. Probably best not to emphasise the point. • At university I won the only award in my year. When I told the head of my course there was clearly a mistake she said no, I had won it for ‘asking more questions than anyone else consistently over three years’. I’m pretty sure she rolled her eyes too. - Again, maybe that wasn’t something to share with a group of around 80 colleagues.

I obviously needed to come up with something else. So I decided on: ‘I have a tendency to panic. At my first driving test I got in such a panic when I was told to get in the car that got in the passenger side. I failed. I’m also related (in a dim and distant way) to the captain of the Titanic.

When you combine those things I guess it’s not surprising that I rarely have passengers in my car.’ Unfortunately, this is 100% accurate.

To my surprise and my boss’s, boss’s boss singled mine out and ‘liked’ my response, so maybe it is ok to just be yourself rather than trying to be clever. I’m still glad I didn’t use the yellow sweets one though. Helen

What to buy at the market this August

Plenty of summer vegetables are coming into season as we head towards harvesting time of year. Home-grown tomatoes are in abundance and taste superb right now, as do shallots, onions, French and runner beans, courgettes, aubergine, peppers, cucumber, and an amazing number of salad leaves, some of which will have been picked that very morning. Corn on the cob should be cooked and eaten as fresh as possible before the natural sugars turn to starch – cook the cobs protected by their leaves directly on the barbecue and serve with a lime and chilli butter. Early marrows and squashes should also be available, along with main crop potatoes. Make your own chutneys and pickles now, and then leave them to mature in a cool dark place to allow the flavours to meld and develop. They will be at their best just in time for Christmas and make perfect presents.

The soft fruit season is peaking for raspberries, black, white and red currents, plums, blueberries and blackberries, and with a late start to the cherry season, there should be plenty still available. The cold start followed by a burst of warmth in July has made this a wonderful summer for quality and flavour, so now is the time to buy soft fruit and convert it into jams, ice cream, smoothies and cakes, or store in the freezer to bring a taste of the summer to the winter months. A couple of summer puddings in the freezer make a perfect way to taste summer when the days are shorter. Old-fashioned bottling is another way to preserve fruit for the winter – take a tip from the French and bottle the best quality fruit in alcohol such as eau de vie, vodka or brandy.

Summer fish is plentiful this month. Wild salmon and sea trout are a luxurious treat that is scarce even when in season so buy both when you see them and cook as simply as possible to preserve their flavour. Sole, sea bass and plaice are also excellent now. For seafood lovers look out for local crab at its finest at this time of year. Pile the white meat into ripe avocado halves then sit on toasted sour dough bread and top with a dollop of home made mayo and a squeeze or two of lemon juice.

A barbecue is a perfect way to make the most of some of the many meat products that you can find at your market. The obvious choices are steaks, burgers and sausages – properly made with locally raised meat, they have far superior flavour and cook really well on the barbecue compared to more insipid massproduced versions available in supermarkets.

You will find some interesting sausage combinations too – wild boar, venison and even pork flavoured with hops. Picnickers will find superb pies, scotch eggs in many different flavours and styles, pates and terrines, quiches and tarts at many markets – all real time savers for making the most of sunny days when all you want to do is head

for the beach.

Don’t forget the Glorious 12th marks the start of the new game season so look out for venison, wild duck, wood pigeon and rabbit, as well as grouse. Venison burgers and wild boar sausages all make an excellent choice for the late summer barbecue; serve them with the first of the corn on the cob and some locally made chutney for a perfect partnership.

Classic Cheese burger This is a recipe for real beef burgers, no bread crumbs for filling, no egg for binding just meat !!

Makes 4 burgers 450/1lb beef mince; 4 slices of Cheddar • Light the barbeque !!

• Place mince in a large bowl and season with salt and pepper • Using slightly damp hands, shape the mixture into 4 9cm/3½” burgers. Cover and chill for 20 minutes • Put burgers on the on the barbeque when the coals have a red glow and have a powdery white surface i.e. WHEN THERE ARE NO FLAMES. • Cook for 6-8 minutes on one side then turn over and cook for a further 5 minutes. Use meat tongues to turn the burgers (do not pierce as the meat juices will escape and they will become tough and dry).

• Add cheese and continue to cook for a further minute or two.

• Serve on a roll or focaccia , sliced tomatoes, onion rings, salad leaves and relishes
