Welcome This year, along with most of the UK, the Fete Committee have chosen to remember the end of World War One and this will be our theme today.

Cover Design Congratulations to Eden (Russell House School) for her winning entry in our annual cover design competition.

As you entered Otford I hope you noticed our amazing display of 39 poppies, featured on the grass of our village pond. If not, then don’t miss them when you leave, as it is totally unique. Today we will not stop for a two-minute silence, but we hope that our visitors will spare a thought for those brave young men from Otford who made the ultimate sacrifice. Once again we are delighted to have Elands Veterinary Clinic run our very popular and always oversubscribed Dog Show, do visit their registration area early, to avoid disappointment, as the number of entries in each category is limited. We have a number of new musical acts this year, particularly inside the Memorial Hall, for you to listen to whilst enjoying afternoon tea and a well-earned rest. Whilst inside stop by and purchase raffle tickets, although we only have a handful of prizes to win, you will be pleased to hear that income raised from sales goes to help support Otford Associations so residents benefit.

The theme was to acknowledge the end of World War One. The committee were very impressed with Eden’s picture which showed the grey skies of war along with the sunshine and blue skies of peace.

Thank you for your support, we hope you have an enjoyable day.

Edward and William (also from Russell House School) were awarded runners-up for their entries.

Patty Chatterjee, Chair

You can see all three designs on our website www.otfordvillagefete.org.uk

2018 Fete theme – ‘The end of the Great War’ When Great Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914, Otford was a quiet, ‘tucked-away’ village nestling in the lush Kentish countryside. Most older boys and men worked on the land for a living, tending crops and looking after farm animals… so when war came to sleepy Otford it must have seemed like a great adventure to ‘hop across the Channel’ and fight the ‘Boche’. Trenches, exploding shells, barbed wire, machine guns and mud, lots-and-lots of mud, soon put an end to any thoughts of war being an ‘adventure’. When the men from Otford finally returned there was an awful price to pay, 39 of their number had been killed and would never come back home ! In 1919, to remember and honour these men, and nearly a million others who came from towns and villages around Great Britain, the practice of a two minute silence has been observed. Throughout the realm people remained silent at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month to remember those who had serve their country during war. The year 2018 marks the centenary of the signing of the Armistice that brought the Great War to a close. The Otford Village Fete seeks to reflect the sacrifice of the Fallen and to commemorate ‘The Peace’ they won. Otford has changed immeasurably over the course of a century, but the village would still be familiar to those men who left to fight. Their Victorian village school is still there (allbeit somewhat enlarged ) and most of the houses they lived in still stand. All men would recognise the pond by the village green and parish church. It was the ‘hub’ of their world, just as it is for us today. It is fitting therefore, that beside the pond they would have known and loved, we now choose to honour them. Each of the 39 poppies you see surrounding the pond represent someone from the village who never returned. A poppy flowers above the name and historic record of each of the fallen Otford soldiers and sailors. All comrades now linked together in a “Ring of Remembrance”. Our sincere thanks go to Philip Clucas for the idea, development and construction of the ‘Otford Ring of Remembrance’. Thanks also to Jackie Howe for her extensive historical research, and to Fine & Country for their kind sponsorship.

Ring of Remembrance As you leave our fete today why not drive past our village pond and stare and reflect on our special display to commemorate the 39 young men from Otford who went to War but never returned.

"I became interested in creating the 'Ring of Remembrance' having seen a very faded, barely visible, photograph of a hop picking scene in the files of the Otford Heritage Centre.. The restored image showed a group of 14 hoppers posing for the camera with the title "Bull field Hop garden" taken near Becket's Well, Otford at the beginning of the 20th Century. In the foreground were three boys aged about ten years old. It was poignant to reflect that in just over a decade as they reached manhood they would be encouraged and expected to fight in the Great War. As you looked at their fresh faces one could only guess as to their fate, or the horrors that likely awaited them. Thus, it is to honour the boys such as these in a once-faded photograph, and the men they became, that the Ring of Remembrance was created.” -- Philip Clucas
