Let’s stop the A25 ruining our lives in Seal

• Target: Local Authority & Department of Transport • Sponsored by Robert Mitchell Our little village is being ruined by the weight of traffic passing through it. Something like 100 vehicles thunder through Seal every minute, including up to 20 HGVs & buses. This is dangerous to Seal’s residents and harms our health with both noise & air pollution. Some people living directly on the road get wakened at 5 o'clock in the morning by the noise. And anyone using the pavements on the route towards Sevenoaks is lucky not to be hit by passing traffic. There are many children & old people living here and they deserve better than this! Contrary to popular belief there ARE solutions to this, such as‌ • A Junction 5 slip road that allows heavy traffic to transfer directly from the A21 to the M26 (see http:// www.j5-slips.org for details). • A by-pass for Seal (apparently a route was identified in the 1980s or early 1990s but the plans were shelved due to lack of money). • A ban on heavy trucks using the A25 between 18.00-07.00 hrs weekdays and at any time during the weekends.

• Traffic calming in Seal village (similar to Brasted). • A 30 mph limit all the way into Sevenoaks. So how about signing this petition to ask our elected representatives to provide a solution to stop the A25 ruining our lives? Copies of the petition can be found at Seal Supermarket (21 High Street, Seal) or you can sign online: just run a Google search for “A25 petitionâ€?. Please also let me know if you can think of any other ways that we can raise awareness of this issue. My email address is r_p_mitchell@hotmail.com A POET WHO NEARLY CAME TO LIVE IN SEAL While I was looking for some background to the big exhibition in London about the Pre-Raphaelite Painters, I came across two letters about seal. They were written by the poet and painter Christina Rossetti to her brother, the even more famous painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Here they are. Can anyone suggest which house she wanted? Was it the cottage behind the Lychgate House (which used to be the Vicarage)? Or was it the Grey House? Or The Croft? Sadly, she never rented it, so Seal never welcomed that famous poet. Christina Rossetti to her brother Dante in 1881............ "My dear Gabriel, - I dropped in at the agents' this morning; and this afternoon all except myself (for I had a headache) drove to Seal, a village (say) 1 1/2 or 2 miles out of Sevenoaks, to inspect the following small house. It stands in its own grounds, with garden back and front. Has three sitting rooms, that is, a dining room, drawing room, small extra room. 4 bed rooms (2 large, 2 small) besides servant's room at the top of the house. Rent ÂŁ2 15 0 per week; but will be vacant not till 3nd September, from which date it is proposed. It is of course furnished, but no servant remains: lodgers must provide their own. As I say, it is detached: but next to (tho' separate) is the Vicarage: and this cottage belongs to the Vicar. Within 5 or 10 minutes is Wilderness Park, a fine looking place either for driving or walking, and open to the public. The water, bye the bye, is good, but there is a filter to boot! The garden is rather picturesque and wildish, full of greenery, has walks and three grassy steps, and is of a good size............If any question further seems to you worth asking, the agents' address is Messrs. Cronks, Sevenoaks. Perhaps we may hear of something else promising, & I will be on the alert" She wrote another letter to her brother, a few days later on 22nd July 1881..................... " Knole Park is not open to visitors in carriages, only to pedestrians - but one may drive through Wilderness Park, and pretty it is......... and there is a quiet pretty village named Seal. I wonder whether you recollect any of this?" At first, Rossetti was interested: ‘I think the little house you mention seems very attractive’. But a few days later: ‘On thinking over the house spoken of by Christina, I fear its proximity to the Vicarage might prove inconvenient. I should not wish to have any intercourse necessitated’. Had he met the formidable Mr Few, then the Vicar of Seal, his fears might have been confirmed. Peter Mountfield
