Update on the community consultation on Bitchet Common

The Bitchet Common Steering group have met to consider the responses to the survey and all the information received to date during the community consultation. The survey showed an almost even split of people in favour of the outline proposals and those with reservations. There appears to be a need for a greater understanding of what is trying to be achieved, as indicated by a petition received. Looking at the consultation activities overall, there is a clear majority desire for parts of the Common to be managed to improve access and bring benefits to wildlife but there is a lack of appreciation of the importance of ensuring that any work carried out is manageable in the long term and needs to attract funding in the immediate term. It is therefore felt that considerable more time and effort needs to be put into engaging the local community in the practicalities of wood and heathland management, the value of commons to the local community and the importance of such sites as part of the community`s local heritage. This is beyond the scope of the present steering group and it is therefore agreed that it would be beneficial to look into funding opportunities that would enable more effective and meaningful community and education engagement. The next step is to look into these and to build up a project as a result of the work carried out so far. The steering group will continue to keep everyone informed in the usual way via the Underriver and Seal St Lawrence village magazines, the Seal Advertiser and the Sevenoaks District and Seal Parish websites. If you would like to join an email list please contact Fidelity Weston on romshed@weald. co.uk.

A plea from a cyclist to cyclists

If you read this piece on a regular basis, you’ll know I rather like my cycling. Admittedly, other things seem to have taken over a little recently but people know that I am occasionally one of those people out on two wheels. Now, a bit like white van men and 4x4 drivers, us cyclists do tend to get rather lumped together sometimes and I often get asked ‘why do you lot never let cars past / jump red lights / cycle in packs’ and so on. The thing is, I do none of those things. If I’m holding people up and cycling well below the speed limit I pull over, I never jump a red light (admittedly partially due to the conviction that I’m more likely to

get hit by a car as a result, but still) and I’m a lone rather than a pack cyclist (mainly due to the fact that I couldn’t keep up with most people…) So this is a plea to those naughty cyclists: Could you please stop giving all of us a bad name? When interrogated on these things, it’s hard to maintain two wheeled solidarity with you, especially when I’m the one asking the questions of myself. This happened last week as I drove to my parents and got stuck behind around 20 cyclists, moving very slowly, four abreast. There was no way to see around them to see if the road was clear to overtake and after a few miles of this, car drivers started to get impatient and started to risk it anyway. There were several near misses as a result. The most frustrating thing was that when I did overtake and parked further up the road I could hear their conversations as they meandered past, seemingly unaware of the queue of cars behind them….they were discussing the last nights TV! Cyclists (including me) are always quick to criticise drivers that don’t pay attention to their surroundings – don’t let us become as bad as those we get grumpy with. Let’s get out there and enjoy those gorgeous blue skied crispy mornings without causing any problems – it’ll make it all far more enjoyable for everyone! Helen

We meet on Wednesday 12th December at 2.30pm in the URC Hall, St. John's Hill, bus stops close by. Just £1 per person Eileen Burgin

Let’s stop the A25 ruining our lives in Seal

• Target: Local Authority & Department of Transport • Sponsored by Robert Mitchell Our little village is being ruined by the weight of traffic passing through it. Something like 100 vehicles thunder through Seal every minute, including up to 20 HGVs & buses. This is dangerous to Seal’s residents and harms our health with both noise & air pollution. Some people living directly on the road get wakened at 5 o'clock in the morning by the noise. And anyone using the pavements on the route towards Sevenoaks is lucky not to be hit by passing traffic. There are many children & old people living here and they deserve better than this! Contrary to popular belief there ARE solutions to this, such as‌ • A Junction 5 slip road that allows heavy traffic to transfer directly from the A21 to the M26 (see http:// www.j5-slips.org for details). • A by-pass for Seal (apparently a route was identified in the 1980s or early 1990s but the plans were shelved due to lack of money). • A ban on heavy trucks using the A25 between 18.00-07.00 hrs weekdays and at any time during the weekends.

SEVENOAKS CERAMICS LTD. All aspects of tiling undertaken, Bathrooms, Kitchens, Conservatories, Swimming Pools, Courtyards, Pathways. A great service from your local tiler. Supply and installation. Fully insured, free quotations

• Traffic calming in Seal village (similar to Brasted). • A 30 mph limit all the way into Sevenoaks. So how about signing this petition to ask our elected representatives to provide a solution to stop the A25 ruining our lives? Copies of the petition can be found at Seal Supermarket (21 High Street, Seal) or you can sign online: just run a Google search for “A25 petitionâ€?. Please also let me know if you can think of any other ways that we can raise awareness of this issue. My email address is r_p_mitchell@hotmail.com A POET WHO NEARLY CAME TO LIVE IN SEAL While I was looking for some background to the big exhibition in London about the Pre-Raphaelite Painters, I came across two letters about seal. They were written by the poet and painter Christina Rossetti to her brother, the even more famous painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Here they are. Can anyone suggest which house she wanted? Was it the cottage behind the Lychgate House (which used to be the Vicarage)? Or was it the Grey House? Or The Croft? Sadly, she never rented it, so Seal never welcomed that famous poet. Christina Rossetti to her brother Dante in 1881............ "My dear Gabriel, - I dropped in at the agents' this morning; and this afternoon all except myself (for I had a headache) drove to Seal, a village (say) 1 1/2 or 2 miles out of Sevenoaks, to inspect the following small house. It stands in its own grounds, with garden back and front. Has three sitting rooms, that is, a dining room, drawing room, small extra room. 4 bed rooms (2 large, 2 small) besides servant's room at the top of the house. Rent ÂŁ2 15 0 per week; but will be vacant not till 3nd September, from which date it is proposed. It is of course furnished, but no servant remains: lodgers must provide their own. As I say, it is detached: but next to (tho' separate) is the Vicarage: and this cottage belongs to the Vicar. Within 5 or 10 minutes is Wilderness Park, a fine looking place either for driving or walking, and open to the public. The water, bye the bye, is good, but there is a filter to boot! The garden is rather picturesque and wildish, full of greenery, has walks and three grassy steps, and is of a good size............If any question further seems to you worth asking, the agents' address is Messrs. Cronks, Sevenoaks. Perhaps we may hear of something else promising, & I will be on the alert" She wrote another letter to her brother, a few days later on 22nd July 1881..................... " Knole Park is not open to visitors in carriages, only to pedestrians - but one may drive through Wilderness Park, and pretty it is......... and there is a quiet pretty village named Seal. I wonder whether you recollect any of this?" At first, Rossetti was interested: ‘I think the little house you mention seems very attractive’. But a few days later: ‘On thinking over the house spoken of by Christina, I fear its proximity to the Vicarage might prove inconvenient. I should not wish to have any intercourse necessitated’. Had he met the formidable Mr Few, then the Vicar of Seal, his fears might have been confirmed. Peter Mountfield

December at the Farmers Market

Thursdays December 6th and 13th Normal farmers’ markets but remember to place any special orders early to avoid disappointment. Thursday December 13th Shipbourne School choir will be singing carols Thursday December 20th Pick up your orders. The market will open at 8.30 and close at noon.. Get into the Christmas spirit and have a mince pie and a drink of mulled wine on the house The market will then close for 2 weeks and re-opens Thursday January 10th Did you see the market on BBC1’s 5 Rip off Food programmes ? No we weren’t ripping you off but used as a contrast to what goes on in food retailing. Just like the opening of the first door on the advent calendar, a visit to the Farmers’ market is the perfect way to get into the true spirit of Christmas. Whether it’s discovering something new, getting advice on the best way to cook items, maybe trying something new for the first time – it’s all a world away from pushing a frenzied trolley round the supermarket! Are you planning to try a new approach this year – maybe a magnificent roast of beef, pork or even a haunch of venison? Or just going with tradition and sticking with turkey? You might be catering for smaller numbers so pheasant or wild duck might be the best choice. As well as all the traditional festive produce, there are plenty of speciality foods and dishes at the market to help save time and feed crowds over the holiday. A gammon or ham, pâtés and terrines, sauces and curries, all are worth finding a space for in the fridge or freezer to bring out for unexpected guests or when you are just too overwhelmed to prepare yet another meal. Also don’t forget to stock up on chutneys, preserves and relishes to go with your cold cuts. In fact why not go the 13:41:33whole way and serve a special local market spread on Boxing Day or for a party – platters of local meats, cheeses, with a couple of salads and the trimmings are excellent grazing food. Don’t forget a few extra loaves of good bread tucked in the freezer for turkey sandwiches or to go with a bowl of soup, will always be popular. Christmas spiced red cabbage This old favourite can be served hot or cold and gets even better when left to mature for a day or two. Serve with the main event on Christmas Day but make enough for leftovers to go with the cold meat on Boxing Day Serves 8 Prepare 15 mins. Cook 11/2 - 2 hours 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 large onion, sliced 1 tsp ground coriander, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon,1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg 750g red cabbage, finely shredded 1 large eating apple, cored and chopped 2 tbsp soft brown sugar 5 tbsp red wine vinegar 4 tbsp cranberry or redcurrant jelly Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Heat the oil in a large heavy pan, add the onion and cook for 3 minutes until softened. Stir in the spices and cook for another minute. Add the shredded and cabbage and stir to coat in the spices then stir in the apple, sugar, vinegar and 4 tbsp cold water. 2. Season and bring to the boil, then cover

and simmer very gently for 1½-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until really tender and the liquid has evaporated. Stir in the jelly and serve hot or cold. Cook’s tip: The classic sweet and sour flavours go wonderfully with all rich meats so serve with sausages and roast pork, creamy potato dishes, and cold with pâtés and sliced hams. Hello Everybody, Just to inform you all that there will be a Community Carol Sing-In on Friday December 14th. We do not have a firm time yet, but we plan to meet up with the children from Seal School at around 5pm after their School Christmas Fair. We will meet outside the 5 Bells and sing in the village for probably about half an hour or so, then on to the church for mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies. We hope many of you will be able to join us. In January and February, we intend to organise some Know Your Neighbour meetings in various venues and different times to enable as many people to come along as possible. The idea behind these meetings is for people in this community to get to know each other better, and to remind ourselves of what is going on in the village. If you would be interested in helping to facilitate any of these meetings (you won't be alone!) please e mail me and let me know. Equally, if you would like to come along and represent a local organisation and bring along any information, please just let me know. Finally, our Village Volunteers project is very close to being ready to roll out, so if you know of anybody in the village who is in need of befriending, or a little extra help, please let me know, and we will be able to give more information on this very soon. (If you still have to complete a CRB form, please contact me as soon as possible). Thank You All for your support with Seal Know Your Neighbours! Marion Gilchrist marion.gilchrist@hotmail.co.uk
