The applicants under the umbrella of concerned prospec ve teachers, in a le er sent to the office of the Osun State Commis-

2026: Osun APC Divided As Calls For West Candidate Heightens

THERE is division among the members of the Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the choice of who emerge as governorship candidate for the 2026 poll in the state.

The division is majorly among the APC reinstated local government chairmen and their predecessors from 2017 to 2022.

While some of them had earlier issued a statement begging for the governorship cket of the APC to be given to the Chief Execu ve Officer of the Na onal Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji, others dissociated themselves from the call on Tuesday.

The rebu al was made in another press release signed by the Osun Chairman of the Associa on of Local Governments of Nigeria, Samuel Abiodun.

On Monday, the former Boluwaduro Local Government Chairman, Akeem Tokede, who reportedly spoke on behalf of the reinstated chairmen, disclosed that they reached a consensus to beg the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola at a mee ng in the Tinubu/Shetma Campaign Office.

Tokede added that they had launched a campaign group, Grassroots for AMBO, to further mobilise support for Oyebamiji.

He said, “The minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, is s ll our preferred guber candidate, but if he chooses not to contest, the NIWA boss should be given the cket.

“We believe that with

our structure, we are local government chairmen, we are in the grassroots and we can mobilise and campaign for the NIWA boss to emerge victorious in the elec on.”

Although he admi ed that the Na onal Secretary of APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru is eminently qualified to contest, the chairman noted that the decision of the party will bind over him if Oyetola anoints Oyebamiji.

Reac ng on Tuesday, ALGON distanced itself from the move.

Abiodun denied that the purported statement by the group was the consensus by all the reinstated chairmen.

According to him, endorsing such a move could cause fric on and disaffecon in the party.

He said, “What was stated in the purported meeting and release represented their personal opinions and not the collec ve stand of OSUN ALGON members nor that of the en re reinstated council chairmen.

“Though we are not specifically against the candidate in ques on or any other one by this rejoinder, we must not allow misrepresenta on of opinion as a group while we allow and expect the final decision of our Party at the appropriate me.

“We are mindful of the fact that the issue of APC governorship candidate is in the purview of our party under the able leadership of His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola and Alhaji Taju Lawal – our APC chairman in Osun State.”

Speaking further, Abiodun affirmed that only the party leadership can decide

who will be given the APC cket ahead of the 2026 governorship primaries.

He also warned past and present council heads to desist from causing bad blood in Osun APC.

“It is yet to be determined by the party leadership and members. We will not dabble in or take sides un l the party decides. Thus, this ac on was needless, and condemnable, and must be disregarded in its en rety by members of the public, especially the APC family in Osun State.

“I, therefore, wish to advise both the present and former council chairmen to steer clear of any unveri-

fied group or press release that is capable of bringing the APC to disrepute as we reaffirm our undiluted loyalty and commitment to the leadership of Oyetola in his determina on to direct the Osun APC to a winning desna on,” he said.

Also, a group within the Osun APC, The Progressive Frontliners, TPF, has again called on the party’s leadership to zone the 2026 gubernatorial cket to the Osun West Senatorial District.

The group, in a press conference addressed by its State Coordinator, Ajijola Ayodele, on Thursday, urged President Bola Tinubu, former APC Interim Na onal Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, APC Na onal Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, and other key figures to convene an urgent mee ng to resolve the zoning issue.

“We are calling on our party’s leadership, including Chief Bisi Akande, Senator Ajibola Basiru, and Minister of Marine and Blue Econo-

“The protest will take off from Olaiya Junc on to Osun State Government Secretariat, Abeere, Osogbo, Osun State. We promise a peaceful protest and also to abide by the rule of law.”

Meanwhile, beneficiaries of the ‘Imole Youth Corps’ have officially resumed duty across various local government areas in the state.

The corps members have been deployed to sectors including health, educa on, and environmental services as part of the state government’s effort to enhance public service delivery and community development.

Findings by OSUN DEFENDER revealed that some of the corps members have been engaged by the state government to teach in public schools despite the delay in issuance of appointment le ers to successful candidates in the 2024 teachers’ recruitment.

Recall that Governor Ademola Adeleke on March 10, 2025 while addressing the Execu ve Council during a mee ng in Osogbo, directed immediate ac on on le ers of appointment to newly recruited teachers. But the direc ve has not been carried out by the state ministry of educa on.

This is coming two years a er Adeleke sacked teachers employed by his predecessor, Mr Gboyega Oyetola. However, the present administra on is yet to employ new teachers despite the shortage of teachers in Osun public schools.

Meanwhile, the issue of capacity and technical training in teaching have been raised concerning

the engagement of ‘Imole Youth Corps’ in the schools.

Many residents, especially parents in the state argued that many of the corps members deployed to classrooms are old and lack the basic requirements to teach.

One of the parents who do not want his in name in print told OSUN DEFENDER that it’s sad that the government engaged ‘Imole Youth Corps’ instead of giving le ers to the successful applicants.

“I saw some of the ‘Imole Youth Corps’ posted to my children school. But we doubt their ability and capacity to deliver. Some of them do not even have the required educa onal background and qualificaon. Instead of them to issue appointment le ers to those shortlisted for the teachers’ recruitment. We urged the state government to expedite acon,” the parent stated.

Another resident of the state, Elijah Oke while commen ng on the development said those (Imole Youth Corps) posted to some of the schools are above teaching age.

Oke said: “It is a pity that Osun State Government is not serious at all. I saw a woman of over 60 years of age on Monday posted to a primary school in Ede South Local Government. It is well. I am not sure if these people who dress like illiterates are graduates and can teach”

Also, Olufemi Aderemi in his facebook page wrote: “Osun is in for it, where in the history of the world has anyone given what one lacks. The majority of those people deployed to our school are either half baked, drop outs or outright illiterates, where have they been examined to test their qualifica on to teaching pupils, the teaching job is not just for every Dick, Tom and henry, but only for professionals.

“All stakeholders in Osun should wake up to challenge the abnormality introduced into our educa onal system by Demola’s administra on before he ruined our future on the altar of polics.”

Speaking on the development, the Commissioner for Youth Affairs, Hon. Olagunju Moshood Olalekan, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth engagement, sta ng that the deployment of corps members aligns with the administra on’s vision of fostering employment opportuni es and community service.

How The Courts Stopped Illegal Suspension Of Nigerian Legislators

IN 2010, our law firm handled the case of Honourable Dino Melaye and 10 other legislators who were suspended for accusing the Dimeji Bankole-led House of Representave of wallowing in corrup on.

The Federal High Court declared the suspension of the legislators illegal and uncons tu onal and ordered the payment of their withheld salaries and allowances.

In 2012, our law firm also handled the case of Honourable Ri atu Danna, the only female member of the 31-member Bauchi State House of Assembly.

Danna was suspended in June 2012 for allegedly making uncomplimentary remarks when she challenged the lawmakers’ decision to approve the reloca on of the headquarters of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State. But the Bauchi State High Court declared her suspension illegal and ordered the Bauchi State House of Assembly to reinstate her and pay her withheld salaries and allowances.

In 2017, the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal filed against the judgment of the Bauchi State High Court in respect of the illegal suspension of Honourable Ri atu Danna. The Court upheld our submission to the effect that the suspension of the legislator cons tuted a breach of the right of the Bogoro Constutuency to be representated by her in the state house of assembly.

The Court equally held that the decision of the House to withhold the salaries and allowances of the legislator was illegal as she was not an employee but an elected member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly.

In 2018, our law firm equally handled the case of Honourable Abdulmumin Jibrin, a member of the House of Representa ves who was suspended for 180 days for accusing the Yakubu Dogara-led House of padding the 2016 na onal budget. The Federal High Court nulli-

fied the suspension and ordered the payment of the withheld salaries and allowances of the legislator.

Based on the case of the Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly v Honourable Honourable Ri atu Danna (2017) 49 WRN 82 which is the locus classicus on the subject ma er, the 2017 suspension of Senator Ali Ndume by the Bukola Saraki-led Senate was annulled by the Federal High Court. The case filed on behalf of the Senator his lawyer, Marcel Oru Esq.

In the same vein, the 2020 suspension of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was declared illegal and uncons tu onal by the Federal High Court. The case was filed on behalf of the Senator by Edward Omaga Esq.

Some me in 2020, the Jigawa State House of Assembly suspended a lawmaker, Hon. Sani Iyaku, over alleged cri cism of the state governor, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar Badaru who was on a visit to Hadejia town for a wedding ceremony. Honourable Iyaku challenged his suspension in the Jigawa State High Court.

The trial Judge, Jus ce Ahmed ruled that the ac on of the Assembly did not comply with order 15 rule 74 (2)(c) and (3) a, b of the state House of Assembly standing orders 2017 and therefore declared the suspension illegal, inappropriate, null and void. The court also directed that the defendant be paid his three months allowances withheld to the tune of N3 million.

On 18 November, 2020, the Court of Ap-

peal, si ng in Akure, Ondo State dismissed the mo on for stay of execu on filed by the state House of Assembly against the judgment of the High court reinsta ng the three suspended members of the state assembly.

The Presiding Judge, Jus ce Folayemi Omoleye, queried the appellants for bringing a frivolous appeal before the court, direc ng that the lawmakers should be reinstated immediately to resume their legisla ve du es.

On 13 August, 2024, the same court reinstated Honourable Iroju Ogundeji as the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly. In a unanimous ruling, Jus ces Oyebisi Folayemi Omoleye, Frederick Oziakpono-Oho, and Yusuf Alhaji Bashir affirmed the decision made by Jus ce Akintan Osadebey, which reinstated the two-term legislator represen ng the Odigbo state cons tuency.

In the past five years, the High Court sitng in Lokoja, Kogi State, and the Na onal

Industrial Court nullified the illegal suspension of members of the Houses of Assembly of Kogi and Edo State respec vely.

In March 2024, the Godswill Akpabio-led Senate suspended Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP; Bauchi) for three months for alleging that Nigeria’s 2024 budget was padded. The Senator instructed our law firm to challenge the suspension in the Federal High Court. We wrote to the leadership of the Senate to review the suspension in view of the illegality of the ac on.

As we were preparing to challenge the suspension in the Federal High Court, the Senate recalled Senator Ningi and paid his withheld salaries and allowances.

In view of the defini ve pronouncements of the several High Court and the Court of Appeal on the illegality of the suspension of elected members of legisla ve houses in Nigeria, the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpo -Uduaghan is the height of legisla ve recklessness.

‘Basiru Is Frustrated’ - Alimi Taunts APC National Secretary For Calling For State Of Emergency In Osun

Yusuf Oketola

THE Osun State Commissioner for Informa on and Public Enlightenment, Barrister Kolapo Alimi has condemned the Na onal Secretary of the All Progressive Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru for calling on President Bola Tinubu to declare a State of Emergency in respect of the ongoing local government imbroglio in the state.

Ajibola made the call through a chat with newsmen from Saudi Arabia on Tuesday while commending President Tinubu on the declara on of a State of Emergency in Rivers State.

In his appeals to Tinubu to replicate the same decision in Osun, the ruling party’s chief scribe said: “We also want to use this opportunity to call on the Federal Government to also declare the same State of Emergency in Osun State.

“The government has grounded local government administra on despite the Court of Appeal decision and the advice by the A orney General,” he appealed.

But Alimi in an exclusive interview with OSUN DEFENDER on Wednesday, described Basiru’s call as evil while calling on the president to ignore him.

The commissioner accused the APC chie ain of frustra on, adding that his party is trying to come back to power through backdoor.

He said: “I have read what the Senator Ajbola Basiru said. This is not a first me he made such statement. He once said that on a na onal television. What I know is that the APC is trying to come back to power through backdoor.

“His u erance is such of a frustrated man for calling on President to declare state of emergency in Osun. Meanwhile there is no any crisis in Osun. We do not have a na onal asset that will warrant the president to make such pronouncement.

“Three different cases have been ins tuted in the court regarding the local government administraon. We call on the president to ignore the evil call by Basiru. There’s no crisis in Osun. The Governor is busy delivering dividend of democracy to the people. He has been going from one town to another since Monday to unveil meaningful projects.”

Also, reac ons have trailed the former senator’s call on X (formerly twi er) as residents of the state condemned him for

his statement.

Egbedi Shooting: Osun Community Condemns Suspects’ Release, Calls for Probe

Yusuf Oketola State Governor.

THE Egbedi Commu-

The community stated that the Special Adviser to Osun State Governor on Chie aincy Ma ers, Adams Akindere, masterminded the release of the 10 suspects arrested in connec on with the incident.

Earlier, the Elegbedi of Egbedi, Oba Muideen Azeez, said seven people from his town were injured in two separate attacks allegedly by some people from Ede.

He said two of those injured were inflicted with machete cuts in the first a ack, while five others were shot by some people bearing arms in the second incident.

Also, in a video obtained by OSUN DEFENDER, some arm-bearing men were seen walking towards a vehicle parked in the middle of the road, while some people that could not be seen were raining curses on them.

A er entering their vehicle and leaving the scene, repeated gunshots were heard, as people within the vicinity kept men oning the name of one Kazeem Oriade, said to be an aide to the Osun

But Oriade, accused Egbedi residents of launching the first a ack on him, while he was travelling through the town to Ede alongside some of his aides.

While giving an update on the ma er during a chat with journalists, Baale Sasa, Isa Kolapo, insisted that the a ack on the Egbedi Community was led by Oriade.

He also said a er the a acks, about 10 suspects were arrested, adding they were however released a er Akindere intervened in the ma er.

“The recent Ede/Egbedi land dispute crisis in Osun State has taken a disturbing turn, raising concerns about the influence of the ruling People’s Democra c Party (PDP) in the state.

“The arrest and deten on of 10 poli cal thugs, allegedly members of a gang led by Oriade Kazeem, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor on security matters, who hails from Ede, was expected to lead to consequences for their ac ons. Notably, most of the arrested members of the gang also hail from Ede.

“However, the Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Local Government and Chieftaincy ma ers, Mr. Adams Akindere, intervened

and secured their release from the State Criminal Inves ga on Department (SCID) in Osogbo. This incident is par cularly troubling given the violence perpetrated by these thugs during the invasion of Egbedi town, which le many injured and hospitalized.

arrested are not criminals. When I visited the Command, I didn’t stand surety for Oriade. Police didn’t arrest those who were detained. They were invited to the Commissioner of Police’s Office. Elegbedi and others were there. Elegbedi was told to point to those that caused the crises and he started poin ng to people randomly.

“From there, they were taken to cell. Being a Special Adviser can’t stop me from serving my people. Those arrested are not criminals. He became the first non-Nigerian African to be handed one of the most pres gious naonal team jobs in Africa.

Although, victory may not come easy as Nigeria does not have a good record against Rwanda on the road.

In three previous mee ngs going back 20

years in Rwanda, the Super Eagles have all managed to come away with three draws from all three games. A 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying match ended 1-1 at the Amahoro Stadium.

In 2011, a 2012 Africa Cup of Na ons qualifying match at the Stade Regional de Nyamirambo, in the outskirts of Kigali, ended scoreless, and last September, it was another 0-0 in a 2025 AFCON qualifying match at the Amahoro.

One constant in those games has always been the fight and intensity brought by the home team, even when they line out with players whose talents and exposure are miles removed from those of the Super Eagles stars.

LIVERPOOL have made Super Eagles and Atalanta star forward Ademola Lookman their top target to replace Mohamed Salah this summer if the Egypan leaves the club.

Salah is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, and there is no sign a new deal is forthcoming.

According to TMW (via TEAMtalk), Liverpool has placed Lookman “at the top of the market notebook” if Salah leaves.

The Italian news outlet has noted that the feeling at Liverpool is that this could be Salah’s last season at the club.

Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have followed the Egyp an ace and would love to sign the 32-year-old, who has the op on to move to the Saudi Pro League as a free agent this summer as well.

Lookman has been a revela on at Atalanta since he joined the Italian club in 2022.

The Nigeria interna onal forward has scored 50 goals and given 22 as-

sists in 110 matches in all compe ons for Atalanta. Lookman helped the Serie A club win the Europa League last season with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the final.

The 27-year-old was named the 2024 African Footballer of the Year and the Atalanta Player of the Season in 2022-23

and 2023-24.

Described by Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini as a top player who “has become a truly extraordinary player, among the best in Europe and the world in December 2024. Lookman was nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or as well and finished in 14th posi on.

sive for Sunderland in the Championship, and his contract un l 2028 gives the Black Cats a strong bargaining posion.

Osimhen, meanwhile, is one of the most sought-a er strikers in the world, and Amorim believes his signing could be a game-changer for United.

The 26-year-old has been lethal for Galatasaray, on loan from Napoli, scoring 26 goals in 30 appearances.

EFFECTIVE governance and robust infrastructure are the founda on of any thriving society. In Osun State, the need for a well-structured developmental blueprint has never been more urgent.

Economic growth, social progress, and improved quality of life depend on strategic investments in governance reforms and infrastructure expansion. By focusing on efficient administra on, modernized transport networks, reliable energy supply, and enhanced public services, Osun can posi on itself as a model for sustainable development.

Strengthening Governance for Sustainable Development

Good governance is at the heart of meaningful progress. A transparent, accountable, and efficient administra ve system ensures that policies are well-implemented and that resources are managed responsibly.

One of the primary areas that require a en on is digital transformaon in governance. E-governance solu ons can streamline public service delivery, reduce bureaucra c bo lenecks, and enhance transparency in financial management.

Furthermore, ci zen engagement is crucial in shaping policies that address real community needs. Establishing pla orms for feedback, town hall mee ngs, and digital communica on channels can create a more par cipatory governance structure where residents play an ac ve role in decision-making.

Modernizing Infrastructure for Economic Growth

Infrastructure development is a key driver of economic expansion. In Osun State, roads, transporta on systems, and energy supply must be priori zed to support trade, agriculture, and investment opportuni es.

1. Road and Transport Network

Many roads in Osun require urgent rehabilita on and expansion. Poor road condi ons hinder movement, increase business costs, and limit access to essen al services. A wellmaintained road network connec ng rural and urban areas will promote commerce and a ract investors. Addi onally, improved public transporta on will ease conges on and offer more mobility op ons for residents.

2. Energy and Power Supply

A stable power supply is cri cal for

industrial growth and entrepreneurship. Reliable electricity will support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), reduce reliance on expensive alterna ves, and create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. Inves ng in alterna ve energy sources such as solar and hydroelectric power can help address power shortages and promote sustainable development.

3. Water and Sanita on Access to clean water and proper sanita on remains a challenge in

THE events of the last few weeks in Lagos, Osun and presently Rivers State have shown clearly that the majority of our poli cians and statesmen either don’t know the meaning of democracy and federalism or are opposed to it, being truly imperial and monarchical at heart themselves – they love to enjoy kingly might and have their way irrespecve of what the law says! We will come back in another instalment to analyse developing stories in these 3 states viz-aviz the topic but let us first and foremost shed light on what a FEDERAL REPUBLIC means!

Nigeria’s former colonial master, as well as its “founding fathers” clearly appreciated the diversi es of its people: poli cally, economically, culturally, religious wise and ethnically. Within a Pan-African recogni on of the cultural and historical unity of Africa, they realised that for the “mere geographical expression” to forge ahead as a country and become a na on, the best form of coexistence poli cally is a FEDERAL REPUBLIC. On the FOUNDATION of this, it was granted independence and self-government in 1960 and became a republic in 1963, with an appropriate Cons tu on. However, the mismanagement of its freedom by its disoriented poli cal elites led to military interven on in 1966, to civil war that lasted ll 1970, and to military staying in government ll 1979. That chain of event destroyed the founda on of the Federal Republic completely.

The return to democra c rule was then supervised by the very architect of the destruc on of the Federal and Republic founda on – the military, which bequeathed a centralised dictatorship to their civilian colleagues in the garb of a democracy via the 1979 Cons tu on.

some communi es. Expanding water infrastructure and modernizing sanita on systems will improve public health, enhance hygiene standards, and ensure a higher quality of life for residents.

Educa on, Healthcare, and Digital Advancements

Social infrastructure, including educa on and healthcare, plays a vital role in human capital development. Schools should be well-equipped with modern facili es, and teacher training

programs should be enhanced to improve learning outcomes.

Similarly, expanding healthcare services and ensuring accessibility to quality medical care will reduce disease prevalence and enhance overall well-being. Osun must also embrace digital transforma on. Technologydriven ini a ves in educa on, commerce, and governance can boost produc vity and efficiency. High-speed internet access, digital literacy programs, and tech hubs will posi on the state for future economic opportuni es.

A Vision for the Future

Osun State’s developmental blueprint should be built on a founda on of governance efficiency, infrastructure moderniza on, and strategic investment in key sectors. By priori zing these changes, the state can unlock economic poten al, create jobs, and improve the standard of living for its residents. A long-term vision that fosters sustainability, innova on, and inclusivity will ensure that Osun thrives in the years ahead.

ORMA February 4th, 2025.

A Federal Republic

The civilians stayed only 4 years before the military again came back uninvited, stayed ll 1999, and bequeathed a repacked 1979 Cons tu on as 1999 Cons tu on, much more an -Federal, anRepublic, dictatorial and an -people, to their civilian prodigal partners, and Nigeria has been perambula ng in the wilderness since then ll date; far away from its father’s home though s ll bearing its father’s name - Federal Republic of Nigeria.

A Republic “is a state in which supreme power is held by the people,” modern republic being founded on the idea that sovereignty rests with the people, who have equal rights and responsibili es before the law, without any person, class or group having any special privileges by birth or associa on.

A Federa on is “a group of states with a central government but independence in internal affairs.” It is “the forma on of a poli cal unity, with a central government, by a number of separate states, each of which retains control of its own internal affairs.” The economic and poli cal concerns, especially territorial defence, that mo vate the forma on of poli cal unity in a central government are always clearly defined, asides those, every federa ng en ty is independent in the conduct of its internal affairs.

Long years of military in government le a nega ve legacy of centralism, arbitrariness, subversion of rule of law, abuse of human rights, abuse of power, impunity and corrup on of the public service. It bred nepo sm, non-accountability, the sole dependency on oil rent revenue while neglec ng all other forms of produc vity,

and promoted favouri sm and sec onal oppressions along ethnic and religious fault lines. All these were bequeathed to the civilian poli cal elites who were mostly co-travellers of the military and whose greed, indolence, lack of imaginaon and sustained fixa on on oil rent revenue sharing condi oned against rethinking the non sustainability of the present opera ng system and a return to genuine federalism. The sharing of oil rent accruals into the “federa on account” and its unaccountable spending as the execu ves deem fit became the do-or-die objec ves of poli cs and of “governance.”

The federa ng units at incep on were the regions, which were balkanised into states by the military. However, each state s ll knows its regional origin. Therefore, truthfully reconfiguring the “federa ng units” without actually returning to the old regions (which is no sin or crime or an impossibility anyway) is no big deal and the argument that the currents states are no federa ng units (being crea ons of federal military governments is mere lame excuse.

If Nigeria is to ever make any progress (however many years we spend electing poli cians into offices and whichever be the names of the Par es or the quality of persons assembled there), no progress will be made as per democracy, rule of law, sustainable development or dividends of good government un l we uninstall the current “unitary” opera ng system and re-install a true federalism opera ng system. Indeed, the swansong going forwards should be “Return to True Federalism – A Task That Must Be Done!” The sooner begun, the sooner done.
