TO CREATE A LASTING IMPACT?

Re-energizing campus in a time of change. As we’ve learned all too well from the pandemic, change is all around us all the time. In fact, “Time and Change” is a line in the university’s alma mater, “Carmen Ohio.” I find myself reflecting on our past and how far we have come. We have grown from humble beginnings at Harding High School in 1957 to a beautiful sprawling campus, including our recently constructed Science and Engineering Building and just completed major renovations to the Alber Student Center. But the true core of Ohio State Marion is its excellent and dedicated team of faculty and staff who are here to teach, guide, and support you on your higher education journey. Since Ohio State’s founding in 1870, our land grant mission has been to bring a superior college degree within the reach of all Ohio citizens, in an accessible and affordable way. That goal has never been more relevant than it is today. Our vision is to be the destination of choice for those seeking a university education at a campus recognized for excellence in teaching, research, community outreach, and global citizenship. We pride ourselves on our small campus environment in which you can regularly access faculty and staff and can experience our “culture of caring.” You will meet award-winning instructors who

are university leaders in developing innovative teaching methods and who provide productive, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences. They also seek to engage you in cutting edge research. You will meet staff who are eager to help, guide, and support you so you can reach your goals. I am proud to be a Buckeye on the Marion campus. I encourage you to learn more about our Buckeye community in the pages within this viewbook and on our website at osumarion.osu.edu. You’ll discover that Ohio State Marion is a great place to begin and complete your journey as a Buckeye. Dr. Gregory S. Rose, Dean & Director The Ohio State University at Marion

FOLLOW YOUR PASSION

Travis McClerking Junior English major

“I’ve always been interested in the minutiae of topics that stem from environmental, biological, and social science. And, I’ve always had an appreciation for the arts and humanities. During my time in Marion, reading and performing poetry, I realized I’d entrenched writing in my everyday life. I came to the understanding that I wanted to interact with the sciences through a more expressive lens. With the guidance of people like Dr. Stuart Lishan and advisor Jessica Sturgill, I have been able to build confidence in pursuing a career that draws from all of those interests swirling within me.”

EXPLORING THE PAST, INSPIRING A FUTURE CAREER “My involvement with the historic Women’s Club Home here in Marion began in the spring of 2020 through a course offered by Dr. Sumner. Combing through the rich history of this place inspired me to continue my work with them beyond the requirements for my course work, and I have been working with them this summer and will continue with a more formal internship in the fall.”

A CENTURY OF TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY

Dr. Ben McCorkle Associate Professor of English

Nicholas Clark Senior history major and intern

Working with co-author, Dr. Jason Palmeri (Miami University), Associate Professor of English, Ben McCorkle recently published “100 Years of New Media Pedagogy” through the University of Michigan Press. This project is an innovative study of how English teachers have consistently utilized the emerging media technologies of their day to supplement and enhance their teaching practice. This online book includes dynamic data visualizations, infographics, and audio and video productions from silent films to podcasts. Writing it has influenced how Dr. McCorkle makes his own courses engaging for all who take them. Link: https://go.osu.edu/100-years-of-new-media-pedagogy
