U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT RANKS OSU COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE SCHOOLS FOR PRIMARY CARE

The OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine was recently ranked in the Top 80 medical schools in the nation for primary care training

by U.S. News & World Report.

The most popular residency training programs for OSU-COM graduates include the primary care areas of family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics.

U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on student Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores, GPA, acceptance rate, student-to-faculty ratio and the proportion of graduates who enter primary care specialties. Nearly 54 percent of OSU-COM’s alumni are practicing in a primary care field.

elcome to the premiere edition of the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences Magazine.

OSU Medicine is on a remarkable upward trajectory. We are gaining national attention for the quality medical education we provide.

We are gaining new partners which present new opportunities and new programs. Our students, residents and faculty are expanding their footprint on the medical care in Oklahoma as our researchers are gaining national recognition for the quality of their ideas. The secret is out – Oklahoma State University has an outstanding medical education program in Tulsa! We want to further amplify that message to our alumni, parents, donors, students and our state through this bi-annual publication.

Our first publication highlights the changes at OSU Medical Center, home to one of the largest osteopathic training program in the United States and our vital academic partner. In 2013, the Oklahoma legislature approved permanent funding to support the OSU Medical Center. This summer Mercy officially signed an agreement with the Oklahoma State University Medical Authority to manage the hospital. The stability of the medical center is critical to the medical education of our students and residents. OSU Medicine is catching the nation’s attention. U.S. News and World Report listed us among top medical schools in the nation for primary care training. TheBestSchools.Org named our online Health Care Administration program in the top five nationwide. Our students completed the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensure Examiniation Level 2 PE with a 98 percent pass rate. The American Osteopathic Association awarded OSU Medicine the 2014 Strategic

Team Award for our recruitment and training efforts leading to more primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas of the state.

We are expanding into new facilities with incredible new technology with the design of our new Academic and Simulation facility.

We’ve deepened our relationship with local, state and national law enforcement with an agreement between the OSU School of Forensic Sciences and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) to provide certification programs for bomb technicians and arson investigators.

New administrators are bringing new ideas. Eric Polak is our new Vice President for Administration and Finance and Dr. Johnny Stephens is our Interim Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for Research.

Our scientists are securing grant money to fund their research projects. Oklahoma Center for Advancement of Science and Technology recently awarded OSU-CHS researchers $270,000.

As you read through our first edition of the OSU Center for Health Sciences Magazine, you will find additional details of these highlights plus more in-depth reports regarding our mission to care for rural Oklahoma and news from our alumni and donors.

We are building a new reputation of excellence in Oklahoma and nationwide and you are vital in helping us amplify and accelerate that drive to exceptionalism.

MEET DR. KAYSE SHRUM, D.O. ‘98 PRESIDENT AND PROVOST OSU CENTER FOR HEALTH SCIENCES AND DEAN, OSU COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE Kayse Shrum, D.O. ‘98, earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and began her career as a pediatrician in private practice, being named the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association Rookie Physician of the Year in 2001. She later became a full-time educator and administrator and was named chair of the OSU Center for Health Sciences Department of Pediatrics in 2005 and the Saint Francis Health System's Endowed Chair of Pediatrics in 2009. Dr. Shrum was promoted to interim vice president of academic affairs in 2009 and, in 2011, was named the George Kaiser Family Foundation Endowed Chair of Medical Excellence & Service.

Dr. Shrum became provost of the OSU Center for Health Sciences and dean of OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in January 2011. In 2013 She was named president of Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences, becoming the youngest and first female president and dean of a medical school in the state of Oklahoma, as well as the first OSU Center for Health Sciences graduate to become dean of the college.

She also serves as chair-elect of the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics and is a trustee of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association. She received the Tulsa Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women Pinnacle Award in Health in 2012 and was awarded recognition as one of Oklahoma Magazine’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2012. She also was awarded the Outstanding & Distinguished Service Award April in 2014.

Q&A WITH PRESIDENT SHRUM, D.O. ‘98 HOW ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY A CHILDHOOD IN RURAL OKLAHOMA? I grew up in Coweta with family always surrounding me. We were and still are a very close-knit family. I have a close relationship with my parents and my sister. I understand the importance of rural Oklahoma and what it means to our state really how important agriculture is to our nation and how Oklahoma really has a health care crisis.

Having lived in those rural communities, my passion for our state and for the health care of our citizens really aligns with our mission which is why I do all the things that I do.

WHAT LED YOU TO MEDICINE? I went to college not knowing what I wanted to do. One of my professors kept me after class and asked me if I was going to go to medical school. That was the first time anybody had posed that question to me. He said, “These are all students that have already been accepted and are finishing up their requirements. They’re pre-med students. And you have the highest grade in my class.” Growing up in a rural environment, I had never thought about how I compared to other students and what my potential would be.

TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE OSU MEDICAL SCHOOL INITIATIVES. It wasn’t because someone told me I couldn’t be a doctor. It was because no one ever told me I could. That’s why I believe in the outreach programs that we do. I believe there are bright students that will make a difference. And sometimes it just requires someone saying you can, and encouraging them and letting them see it’s a possibility.

And that’s a life-changing event.

Our Operation Orange summer camps are held across the state to target high school students. This is their opportunity to meet medical students, who serve as the camp counselors, and see what our college is like.

It’s a hands-on experience where they get to see a little bit of what our medical students do. The purpose is to take medicine out to

those rural areas, to expose kids who may not have the opportunity to drive (to Tulsa) to visit our campus.

Our Blue Coat to White Coat initiative with the FFA programs across the state, started as a part of our rural medical track.

Where a potential student grew up is a strong indicator of where they will go back to in their lives. The students who are in FFA are comfortable with the agricultural lifestyle, and tend to go back to where they were raised. These are the areas in our state that are the most underserved from a physician population standpoint. That is part of our mission here, to train primary care physicians for rural and underserved Oklahoma.

OKstars is a summer program for high school students who are interested in research. High school students are given the opportunity to be paired with one of our faculty members based on their interests and work for about 6 weeks in one of our labs.

They get the opportunity to get a taste of biomedical, forensic, and clinical sciences.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE OSU MEDICAL SCHOOL? I can say even then (as a medical student from 1994-98), I felt like OSU had given me a great opportunity to become a physician and practice medicine to make a difference.

From the moment I came here, I knew what kind of doctors graduated from OSU. The doctors in my community had both graduated from OSU and they had taken care of my entire family. I knew that was the kind of doctor I wanted to be. When I came here, just the environment was so inviting.

You could just feel a difference here versus other places I had visited. I knew this was the medical school I wanted to attend.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I have a large family myself. We (Shrum and husband Darren) have six kids. We have three biological children and three sons that we adopted from Ethiopia. We adopted two

of our boys three years ago and one of them has been with us less than a year. My kids range from 18 to 13. So we have quite a lot going on at our house.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD PHYSICIAN? The difference between a good and a great doctor is their ability – well, it’s what we call the bedside manner that makes the difference. I’ve thought a lot about that because as we take medical students, I’m always thinking that we need to take students who have those qualities. You can have good knowledge and you can be a good physician, but if you can’t relate to your patients you can’t explain things to them.

If you don’t hear what they have to say, then patients won’t benefit from the skills you have.

FOR A STUDENT CONSIDERING MEDICAL SCHOOL, WHAT SKILLSET SHOULD THEY HAVE? They would have to have a strong interest in science. Science can take you to many different careers, but for medicine you have to feel there’s some reward in helping others.

You feel most comfortable in a situation where you’re not doing the same thing every day, that there’s a new challenge. You enjoy solving problems and working with people.

You have to be intellectually curious. You never know what qualities you have until you are exposed to different situations and environments. I suggest spending some time at a medical school. If you are passionate about something then qualities and skills you have will align with what you are doing and you will realize how fulfilling that can be.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB? One of the things I really enjoy is taking our mission and vision out into the community.

Not a lot of people know about the school or the programs, and so being able to share that with other people and potential students, that’s great.

OSU CENTER FOR HEALTH SCIENCES ADMINISTRATORS William J. Pettit, D.O., M.A. Interim Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs William J. Pettit, D.O., M.A. is the Interim Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; Associate Dean for Rural Health; and a Professor of Family Medicine at OSU Center for Health Sciences. Prior to this position, Dr. Pettit served in the United States Army serving both at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In Lawton, Oklahoma he had positions in both private and hospital practice and served as the Medical Director of both the AM + PM Clinic and the Center for Occupational Health; and, he was on staff at Comanche County Memorial Hospital. He has a degree in Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine; a Master’s in Special Education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Luther college in Decorah, Iowa.

Eric Polak Vice President for Administration and Finance Eric Polak was named the Vice President for Administration and Finance in June 2014. With over 10 years of prior experience at OSU Center for Health Sciences, Polak serves as a member of the OSU Center for Health Sciences’ executive management team and oversees all aspects of financial management of educational and clinical programs. Additionally, he supervises several administrative support functions ranging from campus emergency management to clinic financial services. He has a Master’s of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Johnny Stephens, Pharm. D Interim Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for Research Johnny Stephens, Pharm. D. has been named the Interim Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for Research. Dr. Stephens is a Professor of Internal Medicine at OSU Center for Health Sciences and serves as a member of the OSU Center for Health Sciences’ executive management team and functions as a liaison and intermediary between the president’s office and all internal and external entities. He has a Pharm. D and Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy in Oklahoma City.

OKLAHOMA LEGISLATIVE APPROPRIATION LEADS TO NEW MANAGEMENT BY MERCY AT OSU MEDICAL CENTER The Oklahoma State University Medical Authority (OSUMA) signed a management agreement with Mercy in late spring to manage Oklahoma State University (OSU) Medical Center in downtown Tulsa. The move further solidified the future of the medical center as a critical education partner with the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences.

funding for the medical center with the understanding that OSUMA would secure a management partner. After two years of negotiations, Mercy was formally selected as that partner.

Mercy and OSU Medical Center share a joint commitment to care for the medically underserved in the region, and to train and retain primary care physicians in Oklahoma.

“OSU has built a solid foundation of quality medical care and compassionate healing in downtown Tulsa,” said Di Smalley, FACHE, Mercy’s regional president for Oklahoma. “OSU’s mission to provide well-educated and highly trained primary care physicians to serve both rural and urban underserved communities aligns perfectly with Mercy’s mission in Oklahoma.”

Improvements to modernize the interior of the facility are already underway, including new paint, carpeting and furniture. OSU has also started to integrate the Mercy brand into the facility. Since the introduction of new patient communication standards and other Mercy cultural changes, patient satisfaction levels have increased.

Rhett Stover, MHA, FACHE President and Chief Executive Officer Rhett Stover has been named the President and Chief Executive Officer of OSU Medical Center. Stover previously served as the Regional Vice President of Payer Relations and Contracting for Mercy. Before joining Mercy, Stover worked in Tulsa as the Vice President of Strategic Growth Initiatives with GlobalHealth, Inc. and Cancer Treatment Center of America before that. Stover completed his masters in Healthcare Administration at Oklahoma State University after earning his degree in Business Administration and Marketing from the University of Oklahoma. The OSU Medical Center is managed by Mercy and Stover is employed by Mercy.

Sara Bradley, CPA Chief Financial Officer Sara Bradley is the new Chief Financial Officer at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in Tulsa. Prior to this position, Bradley worked for Mercy as Vice President of Finance in Hot Springs, Arkansas. She also worked as the Vice President of Network Finance for the Lutheran Healthcare network in Brooklyn, New York in addition to other finance positions in Tennessee.

Bradley earned her accounting degree from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The OSU Medical Center is managed by Mercy and Bradley is employed by Mercy.

OSU-CHS ONLINE HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM RANKED NO. 5 IN THE NATION TheBestSchools.org has named the online Health Care Administration Program at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences 5th best in the nation. The list of the 25 Best Online Master of Health Care Administration Degree Programs is devoted to empowering students to select the best schools and degree programs in the country.

“This ranking exemplifies the quality of our health care administration program and its role in fulfilling our mission to provide quality health care services for Oklahoma,” said OSU-CHS President Kayse Shrum, D.O. ‘98. “The program is ensuring that administrators at health care organizations are prepared to meet challenges associated with innovations in health care delivery, technological modernization and health care reform.”

The Master of Science in Health Care Administration program offers options in leadership and entrepreneurship or administration.

Students are also provided a foundation in organizational theory,

marketing, compliance and research.

“A master’s degree is a necessity for managers in nonprofit, government and private health care organizations,” said Dr. James Hess, Ed.D., 1998, chair of the OSU School of Health Care Administration and BankSNB professor of health care administration. “The master’s program not only trains students in business and management principals, but also provides them leadership and critical thinking skills to become outstanding leaders in the health care industry.”

There are 185 students enrolled in the program, which offers classes in Tulsa, Stillwater and online. Approximately 30 percent of those students are completing courses entirely online.

OSU-COM WINS AOA STAR AWARD FOR RECRUITMENT, TRAINING INITIATIVES The American Osteopathic Association presented OSUCOM with the Strategic Team Award and Recognition during the organization’s annual House of Delegates meeting in Chicago on July 19.

The Blue Coat to White Coat program at OSU Medicine is a groundbreaking high school incentive program to encourage rural students from the popular FFA program to consider going to medical school at OSU. FFA, known for its iconic blue coat, embraces many of the same values that make a successful physician such as leadership, integrity and commitment to community service. The Blue Coat to White Coat program has already drawn a number of rural Oklahoma students to OSU Medicine who are committed to taking their skills back home upon graduation.

The award recognizes state associations, specialty colleges, medical schools and osteopathic postdoctoral training institutions that make significant contributions to enhancing the osteopathic culture. OSU-COM received the award for recruitment and training initiatives designed to bring more physicians to rural and underserved Oklahoma.

Operation Orange, Blue Coat to White Coat, Senior Mentor program and the new Office for the Advancement of American Indians in Science and Medicine were all cited as reasons for the Tulsa medical school’s award.

This award is given to an osteopathic physician who is an outstanding asset to patients, physicians, hospitals, medical students and professional organizations.

$45 MILLION, HIGH-TECH ACADEMIC SIMULATION FACILITY TO OFFER UNPARALLELED TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES AT OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR HEALTH SCIENCES

SU Medicine is in the design/development phase of a new $45 million, high-tech facility in Tulsa that will elevate medical simulation education to a new level in Oklahoma. The OSU Medical Academic Simulation facility will be a state-of-the-art, four-story, 85,000-square-foot addition to the existing OSU-CHS building. Groundbreaking is planned for early spring.

The centerpiece of the new building will be four hospital-based simulation rooms that employ computers, high-tech mannequins and mock/model patients to replicate the experience of working in an operating room, emergency/trauma department, intensive care unit and even labor and delivery.

“The technology has advanced to the point that our digital mannequins in the labor and delivery simulation suite will actually deliver mechanical babies!” said Robin Dyer, D.O. ‘92, Professor and Chair, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Department. “The complexity and intricacy of the technology in the “sim suites” gives our medical faculty innovative tools to teach our medical students in all phases of their learning. More and more medical students are moving into the clinical setting earlier in their education process to better prepare them to see actual patients and practice for their board tests. The simulators are ideal for both of these goals.”

In addition to the four simulation suites, 18 new primary care simulation labs will focus on the skills needed to conduct

routine patient exams. The facility will also provide a new teaching laboratory to educate medical students in clinical skills and osteopathic manipulations unique to an osteopathic medical school.

The building will be built on land that is now a parking lot to the northeast of the OSU-CHS building along Southwest Boulevard. The project includes a 400 space parking garage and an elevated walkway connecting it to the main building.

“The technical capabilities of the new Academic Simulation Facility provides additional flexibility to expand our partnerships with the medical professionals in the Tulsa community and region by providing continuing medical education certification opportunities required for most medical disciplines,” continued Dr. Dyer. “Physicians, nurses, med techs and other specialties will be able to use the simulation labs and suites to stay current in the latest practices and techniques in the fast-changing medical profession.”

The new building will also provide the campus a large conference center, two auditorium classrooms seating more than 150 students each and a number of smaller classrooms. The building is scheduled to open the summer of 2017.

e’ve heard it before, Oklahoma ranks toward the bottom of the list of healthy states. Oklahoma is 44th in overall health and 49th lowest in senior health according to the latest rankings report from the United Health Foundation. And worst yet, we rank last in the nation for premature death.

The financial crisis of Oklahoma’s rural hospitals is worsening.

The OSU Center for Rural Health monitors about 60 rural hospitals throughout the state. “In the past year, Oklahoma decreased reimbursement rates under Medicaid and the state declined to expand Medicaid as part of the Affordable Care Act,” said Jeff Hackler, J.D., M.B.A., Chair of the Department of Rural Health. “Because rural Oklahoma has a disproportionate share of Medicaid patients, the financial impact of these policy decisions hits rural hospitals particularly hard. We’re hearing from an alarming number of rural hospitals who are facing extremely difficult financial circumstances.”

Oklahoma doesn’t fare well in the bellweather measurements of good health: genetics, behaviors, environment, social policies and access to care.

There is little good news about the health of urban Oklahoma.

Preventable hospitalizations are decreasing, the rate of cardiovascular deaths is decreasing and smoking is down nearly 3 percent across the board. But the numbers in rural Oklahoma continue to drag down our health rankings.

“Rural Oklahoma is also facing a primary care physician shortage of critical proportion. There are about 40 percent fewer primary care physicians per patient in rural Oklahoma compared to the larger cities,” said William Pettit, D.O., M.A., Interim Senior Associate Dean, Associate Dean for Rural Health. “To complicate that critical shortage, a large number of rural physicians are nearing retirement age and will soon no longer see patients.”

Oklahoma reports insufficient medical screenings, a high number of falls, hip fractures and poor nursing home care as factors that are dramatically impacting our overall health as a state. Of course the state’s chronic obesity and lack of physical activity are a constant drag on our health status.

“Rural Oklahomans continue to struggle with behavioral and lifestyle issues that impact their health,” continued Hackler.

“Studies show there is a strong connection between poverty, income, education and a community’s health. An estimated 16 percent of rural Oklahomans over 25 do not have a high school diploma and only 18 percent have a college degree. Low education leads to low paying jobs. Low income and poverty are closely related to poor health outcomes.”

WHAT IS OSU CENTER FOR HEALTH SCIENCES DOING TO HELP? The OSU Center for Health Sciences is committed to improving Oklahoma’s overall health and has a number of initiatives designed to break the cycle of poor health in underserved areas of rural Oklahoma.

“OSU Medicine actively recruits medical students who have a heart for their rural hometowns using early admission and early graduation programs to get them back home and serving as a physician as quickly as possible,” noted Dr. Pettit. “OSU Medicine President, Dr. Kayse Shrum, D.O. ‘98, has created and supported new and innovative high school recruitment programs that are attracting some of the brightest students from the small towns of Oklahoma. We expose these students to rural rotations in their medical training and push for participation in rural residencies throughout the state.” Over the last several years, OSU has collaborated with rural hospitals to develop ten residency programs in rural Oklahoma, presenting an opportunity for graduates to train in the rural regions where OSU hopes they will return to practice.

The OSU Center for Rural Health is helping over 60 small hospitals in Oklahoma with new ideas and solutions to improve care and financial performance.

Those relationships have allowed OSU to open dialogue with community leaders to offer customized programs to better educate local populations about their health and well-being. OSU can then facilitate meetings among hospitals, providers, and community members so they can discuss together what they would like their healthcare system to be.

When services do not exist in a rural community, OSU can provide telemedicine specialty services to fill in the gaps. OSU’s tele-health network connects more than 100 sites to provide specialty care via telemedicine to rural Oklahoma. OSU also deploys two mobile telemedicine clinics to strategic locations in the state connecting rural populations with specialists in urban areas who use state-ofthe-art communication and diagnostic technology to bring nuclear medicine, HIV/AIDS care, and other services to underserved populations.

STUDENT PROFILE AMANDA HALE, OSU COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL STUDENT Her heart has always been in rural Oklahoma and if her dreams come true, it always will be.

she then discovered another medical school in Oklahoma – the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa.

Amanda Hale is a third-year medical student at OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine from Dickson, a small community in south central Oklahoma. “I love it there, everybody knows your name and cares about you – I want to give that back,” said Hale.

“The moment I stepped onto the OSU College of Medicine campus, I felt a sense of home,” Hale remembers. “They were genuinely interested in me as a person and they were committed to caring for the people of rural Oklahoma as well.”

She is now going through her core rotations in surgery, obstetrics, internal medicine and cardiology in Durant at the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma. When she completes medical school, she plans to return to her hometown area for her residency work and eventually to set up a professional medical practice.

Amanda tells the story, “When I was in the 8th grade at Dickson Middle School, I learned I could get a day out of school if I job-shadowed a professional. As fate would have it, I got to shadow a family practice physician in Ardmore that day.”

On that day – she became hooked on science and medicine. Ironically, she would later follow that same physician on a medical mission to Africa.

“There, I fell completely in love with medicine,” Hale exclaimed.

Hale majored in pre-med at OSU in Stillwater assuming she would apply for the only medical school she knew about in Oklahoma – the OU College of Medicine. To her complete surprise,

“My community, friends and family have all invested in me. When I am a physician, I want to serve each of them,” Hale concluded.

RESIDENT PROFILE AMANDA BIGHORSE DOMINICK, D.O. ‘11 She never remembers a time she didn’t want to be a doctor.

Amanda Bighorse Dominick, D.O. ‘98 is now a primary care physician for the Cherokee Nation W. W. Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah after graduating from the OSU Rural Family Medicine Residency in Tahlequah this summer. She is a 2011 graduate of the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine.

“While some girls played with Barbies I played doctor as a child,” Bighorse Dominick remembers. She grew up in a tiny rural Oklahoma town near the Arkansas border called Rose, Oklahoma, the oldest of four children.

An osteopathic physician visited the school and introduced me to the holistic approach that is the hallmark of this area of medicine. “I immediately liked the osteopathic approach to healing which blended well with my upbringing as a Native American where mind, body, and spirit fit together,” noted Bighorse Dominick.

“I visited both the allopathic medical school at OU in Norman and the osteopathic medical school at OSU in Tulsa. OSU immediately felt like home. There is a unique and welcoming spirit at OSU Medicine and I wanted to be a part of it,” she concluded.

Bighorse Dominick was accepted at the OSU College of Medicine and excelled.

She received the Regents’ Award for Outstanding Graduate, the Rural Medicine Award, was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honorary Society and SIGMA SIGMA PHI, a national honorary osteopathic society.

After graduation, Dr. Milner began work as a primary care physician in Tulsa. She served in various positions throughout a variety of physician organizations, eventually rising to leadership positions. She insists she didn’t intend to be a leader but got involved because she wanted to repay the osteopathic community that stood by her in those difficult days when she was an unlikely candidate and took two tries to get into medical school. Dr. Milner became board president of OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Alumni Association in 2012 and was a board member of the Oklahoma State University Medical Center Trust when she caught the governor’s eye as a potential OSU Regent. ALUMNI COWBOYS IN AFRICA A team of OSU Medicine alumni took medical care to Kenya this summer on a medical mission trip.

“Cowboys in Kenya,” as they called themselves, included Tracy Overton Middleton, D.O. ‘88, Matt Weichbrodt, D.O. ‘88, and Connie Brown, D.O. ‘86 and many colleagues.

The team worked in the slums of Nairobi setting up a medical clinic, makeshift pharmacy, and optometry clinic. Their medical care ranged from management of acute hypertensive emergencies, to pneumonia with sepsis, scabies and impetigo to dispensing eye glasses and leg braces.

Kyle Jones D.O. ’06 visits with students about what it means to be healthy in body, mind and spirit.

Kyle Jones, D.O. ‘06, is a family medicine physician in Kenya Africa where he and his family serve as medical missionaries with an agency called In His Image. Dr. Jones works in a small, rural hospital in Kapsowar, Kenya. The area is in the Great Rift Valley, an intracontinental ridge system that divides the country east from west.

Dr. Jones is one of six physicians, four Americans and two Kenyans, serving the Marakwet people who farm the region. The team provides inpatient adult and pediatric care, outpatient services, surgery and obstetrics. They also conduct a monthly HIV clinic and help secure free medications for their patients.

“One of our favorite projects has been going out to the local schools and conducting programs to help the students know what it means to be healthy in body, mind and spirit to literally thousands of students”, said Dr. Jones. “It is great to think that the Osteopathic philosophy of medicine is reaching all the way to this far off place.”

PARTNERSHIP LED TO NATION’S FIRSTS IN THE GROWING FIELD OF FORENSIC SCIENCES

S

ometime in the future, a driver could be pulled over for erratic driving. After observing the driver and completing Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST), the officer takes a mouth swab of the driver’s saliva and knows in minutes the driver is under the influence of marijuana or other drugs.

Developing such a portable drug detection test for law enforcement is just one of the many current ideas in validation because of the relationship between the School of Forensic Sciences at OSU Center for Health Sciences and the Tulsa Police Department (TPD).

In the early 2000s both organizations were outgrowing their operational space. The OSU School of Forensic Sciences was quickly expanding beyond its limited space on the first floor of the Center for Health Sciences building with the popularity of the burgeoning field of forensic sciences.

Likewise, TPD needed to relocate from the first floor of the Police Headquarters to enhance its forensic division and to retain their national certification. Then OSU-CHS President John Fernandes and Tulsa Police Chief Ronald Palmer and his command staff agreed their joint problem needed a joint solution. The $43-million, five-story, 125,000-squarefoot OSU School for Forensic Sciences building with its faculty of forensic research scientists and TPD’s Forensic Laboratory were an ideal match.

“The blend of specialized scientists and investigators from the very different worlds of academic medicine and law enforcement has elevated the quality of both programs,” said Dr. Robert Allen, OSU School of Forensic Sciences.

“TPD brings practical street experience and OSU researchers bring their academic knowledge into the relationship. The result is a rich teaching and learning environment where new ideas in the forensic sciences and investigation are constantly emerging.”

Tulsa PD practices seven disciplines of forensic investigation some of which have been enhanced through the collaboration with the OSU School of Forensic Sciences. The TPD property room is located on the first floor of the OSU-CHS building and the TPD Forensic Laboratory is located on the second floor. The OSU School of Forensic Sciences is located on the third floor and provides space for faculty and graduate student research (sometimes involving collaboration with the TPD scientists).

Adjunct faculty at the OSU School of Forensic Sciences includes various law enforcement professionals as well as forensic scientists from the TPD Forensic Laboratory as well as other agencies nationwide.

OSU SYSTEM-WIDE COLLABORATION BRINGS TECHNOLOGY PACKED CLOTHING CLOSER TO MARKET

I

t’s bedtime and you need to check your heart. Just put on a specially engineered “smart shirt” that gathers diagnostic information while you sleep.

This sounds futuristic but a unique and very collaborative team across the Oklahoma State University system is quickly making this a reality for sleep and a number of other disease conditions.

The multi-discipline research and design team combines the scientific minds from three OSU academic programs: OSU School for Biomedical Sciences (OSU Center for Health Sciences) in Tulsa, the OSU College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology in Stillwater, and the OSU College of Human Sciences in Stillwater. Researchers in biomedical engineering, apparel design, textile science, and medicine are collaborating to create wearable smart garment technology that can detect medical problems much earlier in the disease process than today’s conventional diagnostic tools.

“We have developed a smart garment vest that can be worn so that the sensors comfortably contact with the patient’s chest so that various sleep and heart function measurements can be taken,” said Bruce Benjamin, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences at OSU Center for Health Sciences. “The signal technology sends that diagnostic information to devices that can then analyze the data and help a physician develop a diagnosis and treatment for the patient.”

To develop smart garments you need biomedical engineering experts versed in signal acquisition and analysis. These engineers understand how to develop and apply sensors that can collect physiological information from the human body, collection units that can capture that data from a distance and sophisticated medical software that can reveal the clinical meaning of the data. The ultimate goal is to use that data to diagnose medical problems in both traditional and

innovative ways. “We analyze data beat by beat, breath by breath, on such a detailed and complex level that physical problems can be detected much earlier on in the disease process when treatments could be much more effective,” said Brek Wilkins, Ph.D., Post-Doctoral Associate at OSU Center for Health Sciences.

One of the most difficult development problems is finding a way to comfortably get those complex medical sensors integrated into a garment that someone will actually wear. That is where the researchers from OSU College of Human Sciences’ Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising in Stillwater use their expertise.

“In garment design, we are looking at patterns that put the sensors in exactly the right place on the human body for the time needed to gather the proper data,” said Mary Ruppert-Stroescu, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Apparel Design and Textile.

“We also have to design clothing that the user will wear comfortably over time. In some cases, this might be night or day clothing, vests or full tops and bottoms, depending on the goal of a particular garment.”

In addition to heart problems, smart garments are being designed to detect sleep apnea, asthma, gauge blood pressure and breathing rates, and even measurements to diagnose frailty in older patients.

“Our goals are to understand the body better, develop new diagnostic tools and new therapies to detect and treat disease much earlier,” Dr. Benjamin concluded.

“It is fascinating to watch the experts in these very different disciplines come together to view the same problem from very different perspectives. The result is a new way to look at diseases, diagnoses and treatments.”

OSU AND ATF PARTNERING TO TRAIN NATION’S LAW ENFORCEMENT AND MILITARY BOMB AND ARSON SPECIALISTS

O

klahoma State University is the first in the nation to offer comprehensive, forensic-based training and education for Arson and Explosives Investigation (AEI) at the new Center for Improvised Explosives (IMPEX) in the School of Forensic Sciences at OSU Center for Health Sciences (OSU-CHS). The AEI option of the Master of Science in Forensic Science degree program at OSU-CHS was designed specifically for law enforcement and military personnel working in explosive and arson investigation, including Bomb Technicians, Explosives Ordnance Disposal Technicians, Certified Explosives Specialists, Certified Fire Investigators, and other investigative personnel.

IMPEX offers a hybrid educational experience combining classroom and online courses that focus on the chemistry of improvised explosives, pyrotechnics, fire dynamics, blast effects, evidence collection techniques, laboratory techniques and procedures, device and ordnance identification and other fieldrelated topics.

“IMPEX is very unique in the country because it is advanced training for first responders into the forensic science of explosives and arson fires,” said John Frucci, Ed.S., IMPEX director of training. “We are nationally recognized for teaching certified bomb technicians and fire investigators the next level of explosive and fire science to better understand the chemistry of these weapons, how they destroy and how we can track down the criminals using them.” Frucci is a retired bomb technician and police officer from New Jersey.

The program is designed to accommodate all active professionals in the AEI discipline, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) has already enrolled a strong cohort of students in the new graduate program. “The School of Forensic Sciences has enjoyed an active partnership with our local law enforcement partners for many years,” continued Frucci.

“The local partnership with ATF has now grown into

a national level partnership.” Current students in the program are from all over the United States and specialize in fire or explosives investigations.

“We have seen an increase in the terrorist use of improvised explosives from Boston, to Iraq. We have our own history with improvised explosives right here in Oklahoma, and we are seeing these explosive materials at clandestine laboratories where drugs are also being manufactured,” said Jarrad Wagner, Ph.D., IMPEX director of research and testing. “Terrorists are growing in their sophistication in the use of explosives and law enforcement and the military must constantly train to stay ahead.” The IMPEX program brings together a highly-trained and academically educated forensics team to keep investigators on the leading edge of new bomb and arson research and technology to prevent attacks and identify the criminals employing these devices.

COWBOYS WHO CARE OSU CENTER FOR HEALTH SCIENCE VOLUNTEERS PROVE THAT COWBOYS CARE! The first lesson on the very first day of medical school at Oklahoma State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine is a lesson in caring. First year medical students are asked to roll up their sleeves and volunteer in the community as part of the annual Dr. Pete’s Big Event Day. Students get the message that caring and compassion come first.

One of the major components of OSU Center for Health Sciences’ vision and mission is to produce physicians, research scientists and other healthcare professionals who are dedicated, effective and compassionate community leaders. Cowboys Care was founded in August 2014 to promote community leadership and a heart for service by teaming up students, faculty and staff in a variety of volunteer projects.

Since its inception, Cowboys Care has promoted over 10 events and volunteer opportunities benefitting organizations ranging from the Special Olympics to the Alzheimer’s Association to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Since the program began, OSU-CHS faculty, staff and students have served over 400 hours in their community and have saved over 100 lives through their blood drives. Many opportunities are wellness-related, tapping into faculty, staff and students’ existing passion for helping others lead healthy lives.

OSU-CHS employees, Katie Hughes and Joni Finfrock, helped at the Hospitality House in October. Each year Hospitality House donates goodie bags for people in waiting rooms of area hospitals.

Hospitality House offers a “home away from home” for families caring for loved ones in medical care.

OSU MEDICINE ROLLS OUT SECOND YEAR OF NEW CURRICULUM

OSU Medicine continues to enhance its new curriculum in the second year of an integrated curriculum roll-out that has significantly changed the way medicine is taught at the Tulsabased medical school.

“We completely rebuilt the curriculum last year and continue to refine the process in our second year,” said Bruce Benjamin, Ph.D., OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine Interim Vice Provost for Graduate Programs. “We wanted to teach our osteopathic medical students in the same holistic model as an osteopathic physician treats the patient looking at the body as an integrated system. There is more to care than the science of medicine, we want them to focus on the patients of medicine.”

In 2013, OSU Medicine moved from a subject/disciplinebased curriculum to a system-based curriculum. Students no longer take broad subjects such as anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology. The new curriculum focuses on body systems such as the cardiovascular, pulmonary and neurological systems. For each body system the medical student learns through module sequences that teach the biochemistry, molecular biology and

microbiology of each of these systems.

“Our ultimate goal is to teach our students how to best interact with a patient when they become a physician,” said Kayse Shrum, D.O. ‘98, President and Provost OSU Center for Health Sciences. “Osteopathic physicians consider the whole patient in the examination, diagnostic and treatment process. If we train our students by teaching them how the whole body interacts while they are still in the classroom, they will become much better physicians for their patients in the future.”

This year we are refining a “developing the physician” course that explores the skills and motivation necessary to become compassionate osteopathic physicians by bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and patient encounters in the community. OSU Medicine is also dedicated to teaching medical students the responsibility and importance of becoming leaders in their community.

DEVLOPMENT MATTERS CHALLENGE SCHOLARSHIP DONORS SPUR THE CREATION OF MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIPS Jeanette Kern and Judge Terry Kern, OSU ’66, became engaged with OSUCHS when their daughter, Julie Shelley, D.O. ’14, was accepted into OSU Medicine. As they followed Julie’s journey through medical school, they became impressed by the critical work that President Kayse Shrum, D.O. ‘98 and her team were carrying out to train doctors for rural Oklahoma especially in light of the physician shortage facing rural Oklahoma. “The health Judge Terry Kern and Jeanette Kern care system in Oklahoma is fragile,” said Judge Kern, “I am concerned that without these new doctors our state will experience considerable growth and economic problems.” Judge Kern attended OSU in Stillwater in the 1960s on

a scholarship. When the time came to designate the purpose of their transformative gift, he urged his wife to support student scholarship.

Jeanette persuaded her brother Tim Headington of Dallas, TX, to join forces with her and her husband to create the single largest cash gift to support endowed medical scholarships. Together, Jeanette, Terry and Tim donated $750,000 in June 2014, to create the KernHeadington Scholarship Challenge. The Kern-Headington Challenge is designed to inspire more people to give to scholarship support and to strengthen the scholarship program at OSU-CHS. For every dollar raised for medical scholarships, Jeanette, Terry, and Tim will donate an equal amount to OSU-CHS. So far, $339,000 has been pledged in response to the Kern-Headington Scholarship Challenge, leaving a balance of $411,000 to be raised by June 30, 2015. “We are grateful to Jeanette, Terry and Tim for their inspirational gift to support scholarships,” said President Kayse Shrum, D.O. ‘98, “Their gift will allow us to grow the medical scholarship program by leaps and bounds.” Once the Kern-Headington Scholarship Challenge has been met, OSU-CHS will effectively double the endowment size for medical scholarships. DEVLOPMENT MATTERS GIFTS TO OSU-CHS 2014 IN REVIEW Cancer Sucks made a gift of $25,000 to support cancer research currently taking place at OSU-CHS under the direction of Rashmi Kaul, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Immunology. Patti and Rick Horton co-founded Cancer Sucks in 1998 in memory of Rick’s mother, Donna Holland White, who passed away from cancer in 1996. Since 2006, Cancer Sucks has supported OSU-CHS with gifts totaling over $150,000.

Shelley, D.O. ’14, along with Jeanette’s brother Tim Headington, established the Kern-Headington Endowed Scholarship for Primary Care with a gift of $750,000. The endowed scholarship will support medical students who are interested in practicing primary care medicine in Oklahoma. The gift from Jeanette, Tim and Judge Kern, represents the single largest cash gift designated to support endowed medical scholarships at OSU-CHS.

The Mary K. Chapman Foundation awarded OSU-CHS a grant of $150,000 to be completed over five years. The grant will support medical students interested in practicing primary care medicine in Oklahoma. The Chapman Foundation, through the leadership of co-trustees Donne Pitman and Jerry Dickman, has been supportive of OSU-CHS spanning over two decades with gifts to medical scholarships, women’s health and the School of Forensic Sciences.

PLICO, under the leadership of Carl Hook, M.D., President and CEO of PLICO, made a gift of $50,000 to support a biomedical ethics course and $3,000 to support the Developing the Physician course. PLICO has been a champion of the teaching of biomedical ethics at OSU-CHS, having underwritten the biomedical ethics course at OSU-CHS for the past five years.

Walli and Bobby Daniel, D.O., parents of Jeremy Daniel, a first-year OSU medical student, established the Great Physician Endowed Scholarship with a pledge of $25,000 to be completed over five years. The endowed scholarship will support medical students who are committed to family practice and who have demonstrated outstanding character, faith and moral leadership.

Wendy and Gentner Drummond, OSU ’85, established the Wendy and Gentner Drummond Endowed Scholarship with a gift of $25,000, to be completed over five years. The endowed scholarship will support medical students who are from Osage County, Oklahoma or who intend to practice medicine in Osage County.

Sherry Eastman, Program Coordinator at the OSU-CHS Center for Rural Health, established the Eastman Primary Care Endowed Scholarship with a pledge of $25,000 to be completed over four years. The endowed scholarship will support medical students interested in practicing primary care medicine in rural Oklahoma.

Dedicated to OSU medical students, Sherry decided to allocate her inheritance from her mother which was passed down by her grandmother to support current and future generations of medical students to come.

Audrey Hendershot made a gift of $10,000 to fund the Audrey Hendershot Scholarship for Early Entry Rural Physicians. Ms. Hendershot established the scholarship in 2013 to support the Rural and Underserved Primary Care Early Admissions Scholarship Program (Early Admissions Program). The Early Admissions Programs allows students to complete pre-doctoral medical training in seven years instead of eight years. She is committed to funding the scholarship with cash gifts until the estate gift is realized upon her passing. Although Ms. Hendershot is not an alumna of OSU, she is a champion of rural health and has long been an admirer of OSU-CHS’ commitment to training physicians for rural and underserved areas of Oklahoma.

The George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF) made a gift of $25,000 to support the George Kaiser Family Foundation Scholar in Urban Medicine. In 2013, GKFF made a pledge of $100,000 to support the George Kaiser Family Foundation Scholar in Urban Medicine. The scholarship will support medical students who are interested in practicing primary care medicine in an underserved area of Tulsa. In addition to supporting medical scholarships at OSUCHS, the George Kaiser Family Foundation endowed four chairs at OSU-CHS in 2008 with a gift of $4 million.

Beverly and Richard Schafer, D.O. ’93, made an additional gift of $15,000 to support the Dr. Richard and Beverly Schafer Family Endowed Scholarship which they established in 2012. The endowed scholarship will support medical students enrolled in the Rural Medical Track and who are interested in practicing rural medicine in Oklahoma. Dr. Richard and Beverly Schafer Family Endowed Scholarship is the largest endowed scholarship at OSU-CHS created by an OSU-CHS alumnus. Beverly and Rick have been loyal and ongoing supporters of OSU-CHS for over fifteen years. They joined the White Coat Society in December 2013 when the giving society was only a concept in development.

Virginia M. Snell, OSU ’48, and parent of Mark Snell, D.O. ’79, has made a second leadership gift to OSU-CHS. Ms. Snell established the Virginia M. Snell Endowed Scholarship for Rural Medical Track with a gift of $50,000. The endowed scholarship will support medical students enrolled in the Rural Medical Track and who are interested in practicing rural medicine in Oklahoma. This is the second OSUCHS scholarship established by Ms. Snell. In 2009, she and her son Mark created the Hettie Griggs Bridge Medical Scholarship in tribute to a beloved family friend, the late Hettie Griggs. Mark is a member of the White Coat Society.

Teresa Thomas, OSU ’67, established the Olen and Teresa Thomas Endowed Scholarship for Rural Medical Track with a planned gift.

Teresa, a retired public school teacher, has generously designated OSU-CHS as a beneficiary of a portion of her estate. The endowed scholarship will support medical students enrolled in the Rural Medical Track and who are interested in practicing rural medicine in Oklahoma.

The Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation made a gift of $25,000 to support the Early Admissions Program. This marks the second gift from the Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation to support the Early Admissions Program. by U.S. News & World Report.

The most popular residency training programs for OSU-COM graduates include the primary care areas of family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics.

U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on student Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores, GPA, acceptance rate, student-to-faculty ratio and the proportion of graduates who enter primary care specialties. Nearly 54 percent of OSU-COM’s alumni are practicing in a primary care field.
