BOULDER COUNTY

AIDS PROJECT 2012 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear BCAP Supporter, How does the Boulder County AIDS Project fulfill your needs? Together, we hope this annual report will inspire you to reflect on how BCAP has touched your life. BCAP fullfills the needs of so many, and we’d like to share with you how it meets ours. FROM BCAP’S BOARD PRESIDENT, DAVE ENSIGN When I moved to Boulder in 1994, everyone from my real estate agent to my new co-workers suggested I get to know BCAP. I had just moved from the East Coast where I was immersed in the most brutal years of the AIDS crisis. I had lost many friends and acquaintances, struggled with overwhelming client needs as a Gay Men’s Health Crisis volunteer, and experienced the fear of being tested after exposure to HIV. I never expected to find an organization as robust and effective as BCAP in a city the size of Boulder. BCAP has given me comfort, support, and a social outlet for almost 20 years. Serving as Board President has provided new ways for BCAP to fulfill my needs by giving me the opportunity to serve the needs of our community with an amazing team. Together we can end the epidemic that seemed so scary and insurmountable in decades past. FROM BCAP’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ANA HOPPERSTAD I have helped people living with HIV since I became a BCAP volunteer in 1991. I moved to Boulder from the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983 and have lost hundreds of friends and clients to AIDS. I am grateful for the skilled and dedicated staff, for the smile of a client leaving BCAP’s food bank with bags of wholesome groceries, and for the support offered to newly diagnosed individuals. Every day I am fulfilled to be a part of such meaningful work. You’ll find in this report the unique ways BCAP is meeting the needs of: CLIENTS whose feedback helps tailor services in a meaningful way; VOLUNTEERS whose energy makes us strong; DONORS who provide the bedrock of financial stability to BCAP; and OUR COMMUNITY where political acumen and stewardship create an environment for expanding health care opportunities. The coming year promises to be eventful and challenging. BCAP will not be able to meet the needs of our clients and community without the help of our volunteers and donors. Thank you for being a supporter of BCAP in 2012. Please consider donating to BCAP today so we can continue to be a champion for people living with HIV and/or AIDS. Warmly,

Ana Hopperstad Executive Director

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Did you know there are approximately 650 men, women and children living with HIV and/or AIDS in our service area of Boulder, Broomfield, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties? An estimated 25% of these individuals are living with HIV and are unaware of it.

In 2012 BCAP staff and volunteers: Participated in 35 outreach events. Made 233 school and community group presentations. Represented BCAP at 28 community partner meetings. Administered 597 HIV tests. Facilitated 490 meetings for Atlas, SHAPE, Cuídate!, and Speakers Bureau. HIV tests have been donated to BCAP through Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) since 2005. However, in late 2011, BCPH was informed funding for HIV testing was no longer being provided outside the seven county Metro Denver Region. As a result, BCAP was no longer able to receive donated HIV tests from BCPH. With so many infected inviduals still unaware of their status, it was not an option for BCAP to end its free HIV testing program. Through extensive fundraising, in 2012, BCAP was successfully able to provide 597 tests (compared to 635 in 2011) despite the loss in funding. When it comes to HIV, knowledge truly is power. An early diagnosis and prompt treatment can halt the progression of the virus, enabling a person infected with HIV to live a healthy life. Knowing your HIV status also prevents the transmission on to others in our community. BCAP is dedicated to providing at NO cost, anonymous and confidential HIV testing and risk reduction counseling to at-risk populations in our community. And every step of the way, the supportive staff at BCAP is there to offer information, counseling, advocacy, and compassion.

Ann Puleo has been coming to BCAP twice a week for over 25 years! She staffs the phones and assists visitors, and takes BCAP clients to the on-site food bank to get their groceries. The staff are always happy to see Ann when she comes in — she has been here so long and connects quickly with everyone she meets. How did you first get involved with BCAP? “A woman at my church spoke to me about BCAP, telling me I might be interested in its work and I was! I have a gay son and my gay nephew was always made to feel comfortable at our house. I wanted to get involved and be a part of the community here.” What does volunteering add to your life? “Volunteering is very important to me; I am so grateful that my son is healthy and I enjoy being a part of the community. Being at BCAP makes me feel needed and supported. I feel as though all the clients I meet at BCAP are my kids and I’ve known so many of them for so long now. I’m not treated like I’m old when I’m at BCAP and everyone is so great; it’s a wonderful place for me to be!” What do you enjoy most about volunteering with BCAP? “My favorite part of being at BCAP is greeting “all my kids” and catching up with them all. I hope to make anyone who walks through the door feel comfortable and welcome; I know it must be hard to walk in for the first time.” View the entire interview with Ann at bcap.org.

“I NEEDED SOMEONE TO RESPOND TO MY UNIQUE NEEDS” Every other year, the agency sends each client a survey in either English or Spanish, depending on their preferred language. The purpose of the survey is to provide a tool for clients to share their level of satisfaction with BCAP services. This helps the agency know if services can be improved upon, as well as what services are missing and need to be developed by the agency and/or advocated for in the community.

“BCAP is the only place I feel 100% safe, OK, respected. I love you all at BCAP.” The clients responding to the survey in 2012 were representative of BCAP’s overall client population in gender distribution, ethnicity and age. Similarly to the greater BCAP client population, most of the study respondents live at or below the poverty level and have no private health insurance. The majority (72%) have been BCAP clients for more than three years, with over half having been served by BCAP for six or more years.

IN 2012, OF BCAP’S 242 CLIENTS: 65% had no health insurance 50% were 45-64 years of age 48% lived on less than $931 per month 41% were 25-44 years of age 30% identified as heterosexual 21% were Hispanic/Latino 5% were under 25 years of age

In 2012, BCAP provided comprehensive and inclusive Care Services for 242 people living with HIV and AIDS. These services include access to medical care and medications, as well as a variety of other services that support healthy and independent living. Of the survey respondents, 100% stated that BCAP makes sure they get the HIV medical care that they need, 91% were satisfied or very satisfied with how much their Case Manager was accessible to them, and 83% felt supported in their language, culture and unique needs.

Through BCAP, clients have access to a variety of community resources including BCAP’s two food banks as well as services such as dental care. In 2012, BCAP distributed over 28,500 pounds of food to people living with HIV and their families. 87% of respondents say that BCAP makes sure they have the food that supports a healthy immune system. In addition, last year 63 clients received dental care through BCAP and 84% of survey respondents reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their access to dental care – a health area that BCAP has focused tremendous energy on, and raised substantial funds for, in the past two years. The agency’s goal is to continue raising money for dental care and increase the satisfaction of clients in this area.

“My case manager makes me feel comfortable and is always available when I need her. I feel fortunate to have her.” BCAP continues its efforts to be a safe and inclusive place where staff and volunteers seek to reduce the stigma often experienced by people living with HIV and AIDS and give people an experience of belonging and peace. Of the survey respondents, 95% said that BCAP helps reduce the stigma of being HIV positive. Most importantly, 98% of clients shared that BCAP helps them feel more joyful.

98% OF CLIENTS SHARED THAT BCAP HELPS THEM FEEL MORE JOYFUL.

“I NEEDED TO SEE MY VALUES IN ACTION” “I love the rhythm of monthly giving. With each passing month, I am reminded of my commitment to BCAP and the work that we do. As I reconcile my bank statement each month I see my values in action, and I see my dedication in black and white. I know that these priorities can get lost in my busy life, and I’m grateful for this wonderful mechanism that allows me to follow through on my giving. I know that my monthly giving provides a more predictable stream of income for BCAP and is making a difference.” -- Grant Muller, BCAP board member, on becoming a monthly donor.
