Purple Aster by Dorothy Berlandi The Grand Lodge of Massachusetts held its annual Purple Aster Ball on Saturday evening November 22nd, 2008 at Spinelli’s Function Facility in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. This special evening brought together the Order Sons of Italy Family. Co-chairs of this event were State Recording Secretary Rita Maletta-Robak and State Trustee Lisa Luther. Guests greeted friends they had not seen for a while, and an air of fraternity prevailed. After the cocktail hour our Executive Director Paul Guida commenced with the traditional introduction of our National Officers, State Officers, Benefit Insurance Commission, and Commissioners along with their escorts. Before the dinner was served State President Florence Ferullo Kane welcomed all and thanked the Co-Chairs Rita Maletta-Robak and Lisa Luther for a job well done. The invocation was delivered and it was time to enjoy the dinner. Frank Zarba provided the music for this formal evening, and the guests gathered to talk and reminisce of many yesterdays while others chose to dance the evening away. (Continued on Page 4)

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2009

from Florence Ferullo Kane

Dear Brothers and Sisters, From my family to yours, may I wish all of my brothers and sisters a very Happy and healthy New Year. Let us all start the New Year with the one word in mind Unity and let’s work as a team. December was definitely a full month of Christmas Parties, good times, friendship and camaraderie. Let it be contagious for the remainder of the year. During the month of December, I received many invitations to attend functions at the Wakefield Lodge, Burlington Lodge, Hingham Men’s and the Cornelia De’Gracchi Lodge. I would like to thank the Lodge Presidents Luco DiNanno, Don McGowan, John Arigo and Mary Cooper. I joined the Charity Commission on their Christmas visits to the North End Nursing home on 6th and to the Don Orione Nursing Home on January 4th. The residents of both facilities enjoyed the delicious desserts and enter ta inment. Thank you, Santa Claus (Robert Oliverio) from the Belmont Mixed Lodge for handing gifts to the residents and bringing such joy to them. To Chairman Denise Furnari and her commission thank you for all your time and dedication to the residents. I want to thank State Orator Antonio Sestito for attending the event at Anthony’s Pier 4 for the Casa Monte Cassino. On behalf of the Grand Lodge and all its members a check was presented by Brother Sestito in the amount of $4,500. Thank you to all my brothers and sisters who have donated to this worthy cause. During the months of February and March our filial lodges will be nominating and electing our new leaders. I like to thank those outgoing officers for their commitment and dedication to their lodges. The Grand Lodge of Massachusetts has benefited through your leadership. Please get involved and if there is an office you are interested in, pursue it. If you feel that a leadership role is not for you, then please get yourself involved in a committee and always support your President. It is very important that we work together for the good of the Order. Please hold to the rules and regulations that have been sent to each Lodge President regarding nominations and elections. State Officers and State Deputies are always ready to assist you in any way they are needed. Notify the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts as soon as possible of the date of your Installation so that they can make arrangements for the State Officers to attend this important event. I want to thank all members and friends who supported the calendar raffle. For every ticket sold by your lodge, $2.00 is reimbursed back to the lodge. To Chairmen State 1st Vice President James DiStefano, State Recording Secretary Rita Maletta Robak and State Trustee Michael DiStefano for a great job, thank you! Pot of Gold

tickets are available, please contact the Chairman Theresa Farina (1-603-531-9314) or CoChairmen Michael DiStefano (617-909-0146) and Matthew Ezekiel (617-224-8072). If the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts sells 300 tickets then those lodges that sell 5 tickets go into a pool and this helps with the per capita. Remember the lodges defi nitely benefit from the Pot of Gold Tickets. On January 8-10, I attended the National Plenary Session in Philadelphia. Accompanying me on the trip were National 3 rd Vice P resident Dorothy Berlandi, National Recording Secretary Carmelita Bello and National Trustee Stephen Cozzaglio. In addition to the General Sessions, several meetings were held throughout the weekend on matters concerning the preparations for National Educational Leadership Award (NELA), Fundraising, Membership and the Burning of the Mortgage. The fundraising meeting had much discussion and National is working on generating new revenue from outside sources. Licensing our logo for promotional purposes, product endorsements and introducing trips to Italy has been followed up by the National Office. Membership was discussed very much so at the Plenary Session and there has been definitely a decline in Membership. We need to all focus on Membership and bring in new members. If each member brought in one new member we would double in size. At the Plenary Session the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts was recognized for preparations for instituting a new lodge in Everett. As we all know many of us have a mortgage whether it’s your own home or a lodge home and in these times we are all experiencing some hardships. Our National Office at this present time is also having difficulties to keep up. Several months ago each member was sent a letter in reference to Burning the Mortgage. At this last Plenary Session State President of New York Nancy DiFiore Quinn was appointed Chairman and I was appointed Co-Chairman of Burning of the Mortgage Campaign. Brothers and Sisters we need to reach out and try and help our National President in these difficult times. All donations should be made out to the National OSIA and earmarked Burning of the Mortgage and forwarded to National Office Order Sons of Italy in America, 219 E. Street, N.E. Washington, D.C. 20002-Attention Andrea Beech.

Upcom i ng Events Gra nd Lodge: “Carnevale Veneziano” will take place on February 21st at the Waltham Sons of Italy. Brother Roger Morracco is doing an outstanding job, donating his time and work on Mask Making on weekends for all lodges including working with the Juniors who are having fun with creativity of masks. Don’t be left out of this great event. Contact the Executive Director Paul Guida (617-489-5234) for tickets. Mark your calendar for the Charity Fashion Show that will take place March 29th at the Woburn Sons of Italy. Fashions are from Marshalls and our members and grandchildren will model. Also, there will be entertainment and catering this event is Maria’s Caterer. All proceeds to benefit our charities, so please join us for an enjoyable afternoon. The month of April is generally reserved for Installations. Many members and State Officers enjoy visiting and celebrating the Installation of Officers. April 19 Bowling Tournament at the Woburn Bowladrome. Start getting your teams ready for this event. Any questions please contact Executive Director Paul Guida at (617-4895234). Historical Commissioner Delia Bartucca and her committee have come up with a fantastic and exciting trip to Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Seaport Shopping Center and Ground Zero. A day trip is planned for May 16, 2009 leaving from Norwood at a price of $70.00 per person. We will keep you updated on this trip. Just a reminder to State Presidents a questionnaire was forwarded to you regarding the History of your lodge. The deadline date is March 31st and we need this information prior to the date of March. Historical Commission is planning on doing a book binder with all those lodges that participate with their History. In closing I look at the letters, OSIA and see a new meaning for all of us: Over the seas we see our beloved land from where our forebears came and what they gave to us. Seek new Brothers and Sisters to join, to work actively for the principles of our Order. Innovative ideas and foster our motto of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity for all. Ask what you can do to build and unify your Lodge. Fraternally, Florence Ferullo Kane State President

DON ORIONE NURSING HOME EPIPHANY PARTY by Dorothy Berlandi

Santa Claus (Robert Oliverio) from Belmont Mixed Lodge greeting the residents.

Sunday, January 4, 2009 Charity Commission Chairman Denise Furnari and her commission joined the guests of the Don Orione Nursing Home for the annual Epiphany Party. The Don Orione Epiphany Party is one that is long awaited by the guests at the home. Before starting time they are all anxiously waiting for the festivities to begin. They come in wheelchairs, walkers, canes and yes some in their beds. Danny Ventola and his accompanist begin with an oldie which starts everyone singing. The committee members visit with each of these guests, hold their hands, have conversations with them and it seems that we become a part of a large family. Then Santa Claus arrives to visit with each of them and it is very rewarding to see the smiles and wishfulness in each of their faces. All of a sudden the tempo of the music changes and the committee members join in dancing to a lively polka. Many of the Italian favorite songs are played and sung with the guests, and it is amazing to see the change overcome all. It seems sad to think that all this can happen one day a year when with a little effort and planning we could bring happiness to these individuals more than just on the Epiphany. Perhaps some of our lodges could join together and contact the function director Franca Montemuro and arrange for additional visits and entertainment for their guests. Franca can be reached at (617) 569-2100. Special thanks to Robert Oliverio who this year was our Santa Claus. Individuals who attended State President Florence Ferullo Kane, Charity Chairman Denise Furnari, Delia Bartucca and her granddaughter also named Delia, Regina Perrone, Armand and Cathy Bourassa, Justin and Shirley DiNicola and grandson Justin, Eugenia Frassica and Dorothy Berlandi.

NORTH END NURSING HOME HOLIDAY PARTY by Dorothy Berlandi On Sunday December 14, 2008 Charity Commission Chairman Denise Furnari and her committee visited the North End Nursing Home for their annual Holiday Party. The Charity Commission plans these holiday parties for the benefit of the many residents in the North End Nursing Home. Gifts of socks and caps were presented to each of the residents along with an assortment of homemade Italian cookies, biscotti and punch. And naturally Santa Claus puts in an appearance. It is always amazing to watch the faces of these residents as they greet Santa. We thank Robert Oliverio for portraying Santa Claus. Brother Oliverio is the Vice President of the Belmont Mixed Lodge. During the festivities there were two surprise visitors, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse stopped by. Danny Ventola and his accompanist serenaded the group with many old favorites. It is always a pleasure to watch many of the residents joining in and singing. They certainly remember all the words and melody. We would like to thank Tina Leone the function director of the North End Nursing Home for helping us present this party. Visitors are always welcome and encouraged. If you have some time on your hands and would like to visit these shut-ins contact Tina at (617) 367-3751. Columbus sailing on the Pinta by Anthony Franco The Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, Order Sons of Italy in America sponsored an essay and poster contest to commemorate October as Italian-American Heritage Month. Pictured are the winning contestants being congratulated by State President Florence Ferullo Kane: Anthony Franco (age 6), grandson of members George and Diane Franco of the Norwood Italian Lodge #1235 and Dana Ferrante (age 13), daughter of Dominic Ferrante of the Venezia Lodge #374 of Rockland. Anthony created a poster and Dana wrote

Anthony Franco and State President Florence Ferullo Kane a five-paragraph essay on Columbus as a Great Explorer. The committee thanks all those children who took part in the contest and commends their effort and exceptional work.

CRISTOFORO COLOMBO: A Great Explorer by Dana Ferrante lumbus owes much of his accomplishments to his experience at sea. Columbus’ determination also played a key role in why he is viewed today as a great explorer. Before he went to the King and Queen of Spain, Columbus tried many other European leaders to find a sponsor for his journey. Afterward, he insisted on being allowed to travel there 3 other times because he felt that his work charting the new world was not finished. Though many people in his time did in truth believe that the world was round, their biggest doubt was that a ship could sustain itself long enough to travel around the globe. Christopher Columbus however had his mind set on reaching Asia and believed that both his knowledge and experience would get him there. Many people tried to tell him that sailing east would never be a water route to the west, but he still stuck Dana Ferrante and State President to his beliefs. Break one egg into a small bowl, add wine to egg and whip together. Set aside. In a larger bowl, mix boiled rice, toasted crushed bread portions, butter, chopped garlic, parsley, celery (optional), onion, grated cheese, salt, pignoli and black pepper. Add blended egg and white wine mixture to stuffing and mix thoroughly. Set aside. Rub garlic and butter over veal breast and also inside the panzetta pocket. Next, spoon the bread/rice stuffing into pocket. Seal pocket opening with baking pins. (Some stuffing may escape if over-stuffed.) Before placing veal breast in roasting pan, add a small amount of water to bottom of roasting pan. Cover and bake in preheated 450° oven. Bake for about 40 minutes before lowering heat to 400-degrees. Continue baking and basting until Roast has a crisp golden color. (Veal roast needs to bake twenty to twenty-five minutes per pound of roast.) NOTE: I waited eagerly for Mama to bake what she called a “panzetta.” My delight was to eat the stuffing and to enjoy all the meat attached to the rib bones. Mama didn’t make the same stuffing each time, but I could guess at what was in the “pocket” by the aroma that filled the kitchen. One of my favorites was when she added pignoli and ricotta cheese to the stuffing. Some household cooks added Bacon or seasoned the stuffing with a favorite family cold cut or cheese. Veal breast is not seen often today – at least not as often as years ago. But it is something to try some time if you enjoy veal.

ITALIAN AMERICANS PROTEST VERIZON AD STEREOTYPE

Annual Law and Justice Day Breakfast Call for Nominations

Italian Americans all over the United States are complaining about a new Verizon television commercial that stereotypes families of Italian heritage, according to the Sons of Italy Commission for Social Justice (CSJ). The CSJ is the antidefamation arm of the Order Sons of Italy in America, the nation’s biggest and oldest organization for men and women of Italian descent. “The commercial features the “Coroleo family” whose name is a deliberate attempt to play off the fictitious Corleone family in The Godfather,” says CSJ National President Anthony J. Baratta. “As such, it perpetuates the stereotype of Italian Americans as gangsters. Would Verizon have run a commercial that stereotypes African Americans or Jews?” The CSJ has been “bombarded” with complaints about this commercial ever since it began running more than three weeks ago, Baratta says. He has been in negotiations with Verizon

executives who have promised to permanently retire the commercial in mid-February. “I personally will contact our vast network of members and supporters urging them not to support Verizon for airing this commercial for three weeks too long,” Baratta says. “I find it highly ironic that Verizon earlier pulled a commercial about pit bulls because it offended dog owners,” Baratta says. “Surely the sensibilities of an estimated 26 million Italian Americans are as important as those of dog owners.” Established in 1905, OSIA has 700,000 members and supporters and a network of more than 745 chapters coast to coast. It works at the community, national and international levels to promote the heritage and culture of an estimated 26 million Italian Americans, the nation’s fifth largest ethnic group, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. To learn more, visit OSIA on the Web at www. osia.org.

One of the most significant and prestigious events held by our Commission for Social Justice is the Law and Justice Day Breakfast. The Belmont Mixed Lodge #1094 has had a busy agenda since September, beginning with a planning session attended by its officers in August at their President’s cottage in Sterling. In September, the Lodge invited all members to “chill out” — and many fabulous “make your own sundaes” were enjoyed by all in attendance. Then, everyone went to the horse races — a game in which many participated. A fun time was had by all and a small sum was raised for the Lodge’s treasury to help offset the dues for our Gold members.

BELMONT MIXED LODGE #1094 FESTA ITALIANA in November:

November was a month when we are certain our members were “thankful” that they belong to Lodge #1094! The

month started with our “Festa Italia” held on Saturday, November 8th, at the Waltham SOI. With a wonderful crowd and a “bounty” of raffle baskets, the attendees enjoyed the music and song of Joey Canzano, “The Man of Many Voices” while they danced the night away — but not before a special appearance by Santa, Ms Claus and Santa’s “playgirls” who performed a wonderful dance — as did Santa!!!

BELMONT MIXED LODGE #1094 ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH in October:

Ladies claiming victory at “Italian Family Feud” at Italian Heritage Month Celebration Great emphasis was put on Italian Heritage Month at Belmont #1094. The Lodge hosted an Open House to anyone of Italian descent — and all attending were treated to a very hearty and robust Italian meal (3 kinds of pasta, calzones, antipasto, eggplant parmesan, sausage, peppers and onions, veal scaloppini and enough dessert to feed all of Belmont!), served on

Men in Disbelief at the “Feud” tables decorated with red, white and green tableware, cloths and balloons, together with centerpieces featuring #1094’s “specially patented” OSIA Liberty, Equality and Fraternity flags! The festivity of the evening continued with a lively game of “Italian Family Feud”, door prizes and the awarding of the Lodge Scholarship.

Our 2008 Scholarship Winner Christina Fouraux being awarded her check and welcomed as our newest (and youngest) member by Chris Kochem, Scholarship Chair and President Carol Rossi. This fabulous evening earned us five new members! Our 2008 Scholarship winner Christina Fouraux was awarded her check at this meeting as well.

BELMONT MIXED LODGE #1094 “THANKFULNESS” MEETING in November:

Who says I can’t join Mommy and Daddy in November? - daughter Mia of Andréa and Barry MacLean, newest members.

“Turkey Trotters” trotting November’s “thankfulness” continued with the Lodge meeting in which three of the five new members from our Italian Heritage Month publicity were initiated. No, the baby (granddaughter of Angelo and Carol Rossi) is not counted as a new member, although she is waiting in the ranks to join the Junior Division! After the installation, an assortment of calzones, pizza, salad and dessert was enjoyed by all. And then came the “Turkey Trot”. This fun-filled event netted a nice profit for our treasury, again another enjoyable way to help defray the cost of the dues for our Gold members. The pictures tell how much fun this event brought to everyone!

BELMONT MIXED LODGE #1094 CHRISTMAS PARTY in December:

The year ended with the Annual Christmas Party at which a wonderful assortment of food (Italian, of course) was served and a Yankee Swap was held. In addition, a game of Christmas trivia was played and the prizes were fit for Santa and his sled!!!

OUR WINNERS: Dorothy Berlandi and Kim DiStefano. Guess who won 1st prize??!!

Boston Lodge #208 “1st Annual Fundraiser” by Suzanne Mika We can not forget Boston Lodge’s #208 very “1st Annual Fundraiser”, October 17, 2008. It may be in the shadows of all of your minds right now, but for Boston Lodge’s #208 members and friends it is still very much alive in our minds. It feels like yesterday to us. We are just so proud that we have climbed our way up from a broken stairway that prevented us from reaching the top and being able to work hard with a few extraordinary women who managed to make this event so successful. Boston Lodge 208 had their event at Joe Tecce’s Restaurant on North Washington Street in Boston’s North End. The restaurant was elegantly set with fine tablecloths and flowers on each table. The setting was warm with sounds of laughter and conversation and music bellowing through the room by our wonderful DJ, Sal Bartolo. It was perfect! There were over 180 guests and members that filled the room. An amazing meal, dessert and coffee were served while chatter and music filled the air. President Dom Campochiaro from Boston Lodge #208 welcomed honored guests, fellow Sons of Italy members, family and friends for their presence. As the evening progressed, Dom presented awards and f lowers to the following Boston Lodge 208 committee members, Yvonne Ruprecht, Marie Salvati, Josephine Spagnuolo, Mickey Farmusa, Gloria Lerra, Terry and Sandi Sirignano. This amazing crew of women worked diligently, putting in long hours and many days of preparation to make this a very special event. Special awards, flowers and recognition were given also to the following recipients, OSIA State President Florence Ferullo-Kane, State Vice-President, Jim DeStefano, Past State President, Joseph Russo, State Deputy, Thelma Hawkins,

National Second Vice-President, Dorothy Berlandi, Boston City Councilor, Sal LaMattina, Speaker of the House, Sal DiMasi and an appreciate award to our DJ, Sal Bartolo. As the evening progressed, people were busting onto the dance floor, dancing and singing. People on the floor were so jam packed that all you could see was camera flashes going off. Everyone was having a great time. At the close of the evening they had a wonderful raffle. Many prizes were given out. And then when you thought everyone would leave, the dance floor again became mobbed with people and our DJ Sal continued to play until he reached his last song of the evening. Boston Lodge 208, the president and it’s members want to thank everyone who attended or contributed to this event for making it possible for us to become alive again. Also to each and every individual that placed an ad in our Ad Book. Thank you for your support. God Bless You All! (Photos by Dom Compochiaro, D&S Video)

Worcester Lodge #168 Celebrates Christmas by Maria (Gina) Sciannameo, EdD

The Spirit of Christmas was alive and thriving this year when Worcester Lodge #168 celebrated Christmas on Thursday, December 4, 2008. Although this year’s celebration was not as great a fanfare as past celebrations, it was a wonderful opportunity for OSIA members to show and share the meaning of Christmas. It was a time for enjoying each other’s company, stories, and memories. More importantly the special meaning and message of Christmas love, peace and caring were given to those less fortunate. Attendees were proud to bring gifts of all kinds for children who had no Christmas celebrations. There were many types of clothes and so many different toys from young and old for children of all ages of St. Agnes Center and St. Anne Human Services. Michael & Maria’s Catering provided a delicious buffet dinner which included, pasta, meatballs, chicken, salad and cake. Helping to serve the buffet were members of Lodge #168, Ginger Rinaldi, Shirley Battel, Tony Marchese, and Mary Ann Bello. Their help was indeed greatly appreciated! In addition to celebrating Christmas, lodge members took the opportunity to wish one of their own a wonderful 90th Birthday! Long-standing member, Gladys Bello, celebrated her 90th birthday this month. God Bless you

Burlington Sons of Italy Annual Membership Drive

The Burlington Sons of Italy invites all those of Italian descent, either through birth or marriage, to join the membership of the Order Sons of Italy in America. The Burlington lodge meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m., in the Senior Center of the ‘Council on Aging’ at 61 Center Street in Burlington. In 1905, our founder, physician Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro spoke to a crowd of cheering Italian immigrants gathered in New York’s Little Italy and told them of his vision to unite under one umbrella all the Italians who had arrived on the great shores of America. And so was born “L’Ordine Figli d’Italia in America.” Dr. Sellaro’s plea that day was for those Italian Americans to take their rightful place of influence and respect in society. His dream was that this country would become richer and more cultured as a result of the contributions of Italian immigrants and their descendents. Today Italian Americans are leaders in business, law, education, medicine, research, engineering, civic and political life, and more. He would be proud today to see we have realized his dream. The Massachusetts Grand Lodge was established in 1914 and the Burlington Lodge #2223 was established in 1970. The motto of our Order throughout its history has always been “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.” Liberty: We want a free country as it was conceived by the founders of the republic. We want freedom of assembly, of speech, of opportunity, and above all, economic freedom. Equality: We believe that all people are created equal, that all are equal before the law and that the law should protect all equally and that none should have or enjoy any special privileges. Fraternity: The structure of our order is founded upon our conception of fraternity and we affectionately offer a hand to

all without discrimination as to race, color or creed. We believe in brotherhood and that the state was created to serve its citizens, not vice versa. Our Burlington membership is a cross-section of our community and is involved in a diverse set of community activities and charitable efforts. For example, we provide scholarships to deserving graduates of Burlington High School. Our charitable efforts consist of annual donations from money raised at our fund-raising events to the National Alzheimer’s Association, Cooley’s Anemia (Thalassemia — a group of genetic blood disorders), Don Orione Home and Madonna Queen Shrine for elderly men and women in need of extended medical care and Casa Monte Cassino, whose humanitarian mission is to provide free housing and vital services to those who have brought their blind infants for treatment in hopes of treating and curing retinopathy. In addition, we have adopted the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans as our lodge’s personal charity. In addition to joining a growing and dynamic social and cultural organization that works to preserve and enrich the Italian culture, there are social events planned throughout the year that bring us all together in friendship. The sole requirement to join the order Sons of Italy in America as a participating member is to be of Italian heritage in your bloodline or be married to one who has such a heritage. Non-Italians are also eligible to join as an associate member but without voting privileges. For more info, please browse our informative website: www. burlingtonsonsofitaly.org and be sure to click on “Interesting Links” for some outstanding links and virtual tours, songs, recipes, etc. Also, feel free to contact our membership chairman at 781-272-0529 or write to e-mail address: BSOILODGE2223@aol.com.

News and Notes from the

WINTHROP LADIES LODGE #2071 by Dottie D’Onofrio

GOOD FRIENDS — GOOD FOOD — GOOD TIMES — Italian Heritage Month Celebration. Left to Right: Peggy, Rose, Betsy, Ruth, Marie and Mary.

‘Columbus the Discoverer’ essay contest winner Devon Pereira pictured here, Left to Right: Lodge President Dottie D’Onofrio, Devon’s Mom, Devon and Principal Brian Gill. SEPTEMBER was “Support the Troops” wherein the members donated lots of “wish list” items to be sent overseas to our young men and women serving in our Armed Forces. Under the direction of Richard Honan who heads up many of the local veterans projects and like the many folks and organizations who support his endeavors, the ladies were happy to play a small role in this most worthwhile project. OCTOBER was Italian Heritage Month and the ladies celebrated with a fun-filled pizza party and some wonderful desserts. Grand Lodge 1st Vice President, Jim DiStefano and his lovely wife Kathy came down to help us celebrate. The ladies hosted a community ‘Columbus the Discoverer’ essay contest at the Arthur T. Cummings elementary school. The judging committee had a difficult time in selecting a winner among so many well-written essays. Devon Pereira, a fifth grader in Miss Harrison’s class, was awarded the fifty dollar savings bond. Both participating 5th grade classes received Pepperidge Farms snack bags in appreciation. NOVEMBER with Thanksgiving right around the corner once again, the ladies were so supportive in bringing forth many food donations. For

the past few years the Ladies Lodge has worked with Mr. & Mrs. Bradley at the Holy Rosary Church in project ‘Feed a Needy Family’ and we were able to feed six families a complete turkey dinner with all the fixn’s. A number of the lodge ladies accompanied Dottie over to the Hyatt Hotel for the Eastie Elves Charity Toy Drive hosted by Senator Anthony Petruccelli. DECEMBER found us gathered around the Christmas decorations at the Mt. Vernon Wharf Restaurant, Revere to enjoy a wonderful Holiday Luncheon. Highlights of the fall calendar of meetings was welcoming into the ladies lodge sisters; Francine D’Andrea, Ellie Hargreaves and Babe Giangregorio transfers of the Boston Professional Women’s Lodge along with our newly initiated sisters; Vikki Maloney, Anne Todino McNeff and Barbara Wright. The Winthrop Ladies proudly reflected back on their many accomplishments in the fall of 2008 with a New Year’s resolution to continue their Community and Charitable endeavors in the spirit of fun and fraternity. New beginnings for a new year and the ladies are looking forward to another rewarding year.

The Annual Holiday Luncheon

Kitchen Tips Winthrop Ladies #2071 Like to Share … Easy Deviled Eggs: Put cooked egg yolks in a Ziplock Bag. Seal and mash until they are broken up. Add the remaining ingredients and reseal, keep mashing until thoroughly mixed. Cut the tip of the corner of the bag — squeeze mixture into each egg and just throw the bag away when done. Reheating in the Microwave: Place ½ cup of

water in a cup and put it on the microwave tray to heat. The increased moisture will keep food moist and help it to reheat faster. Reheating Pizza: Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on your stovetop. The setting should be medium/low. Heat until warm — the crust keeps crispy. No soggy microwave pizzas!

On Sunday morning October 19, 2008 the Alzheimer’s Fund Raiser Buffet Breakfast was held at the Braintree Sons of Italy Hall in Braintree, Massachusetts. The buffet breakfast served by Fasano’s Caterers was outstanding and enjoyed by all who attended this Sunday morning function. To say that it was well attended would not be correct but for those who did, it was a resounding success. We wish to thank all who found the time to attend this Alzheimer’s Fund Raiser. The raffle table overflowed with raffles all with a theme, and that was mostly “Italian”. To all who contributed to this table “Thank You” it was “great”! To my Co-chair, Sister Rita Maletta-Robak, “thank you” for all your input and help. As we all know, the “Alzheimer’s Association is one of the primary charities of the Order Sons of Italy in America. The Alzheimer’s Association is the oldest and largest national voluntary organization dedicated to research for the causes, cure and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and it provides education and support services to Alzheimer’s patients, their families and caregivers. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain in which brain cells die and are not replaced. It results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior, and

is the most common form of dementia. An estimated four (4) million Americans are afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. It is the fourth leading cause of death among Americans. Because the population is aging, an estimated 14 million will have the disease by the year 2050. Ten percent of those over 65 and almost half of those over age 85 are afflicted with Alzheimer’s. However, because of improved testing and greater public awareness, physicians are seeing an increase in diagnosed patients in their 40’s and 50s. Alzheimer’s disease strikes equally at men and women, of all races, and all socio-economic groups. The Order Sons of Italy has through the years supported the Alzheimer’s Association in its research program. This is all made possible by the donations received from you, the Sons of Italy members, who have made it possible for advances being made in the research of Alzheimer’s disease. Our thanks to the tables from Braintree Men’s Lodge, Roslindale Lodge, Watertown Lodge, Belmont Mixed Lodge, the individuals from Hingham, Rockland, Pittsfield, Lee, Waltham, Winthrop, Winchester Lodges and hopefully I have not missed any. And, it was indeed a pleasure to welcome our Past State President Joseph Russo and Past First Lady Pauline Russo.
