On Saturday, June 21, 2014, officers and delegates gathered at the Burlington Marriott in Burlington, Massachusetts for the 100th Annual State Convention. State First Vice President Antonio Sestito greeted delegates and acknowledged the members of the State Council, Benefit Insurance Commission, Chairmen of Permanent Commissions, National Officers, and State President Carmelita Bello as they filed into the hall. State President Carmelita Bello was handed the gavel and called upon Chairman Barbara DeStefano to give a preliminary report of the Credentials and Registration Committee. Sister DeStefano reported that 156 delegates were registered out of 184 authorized. There being a quorum, the officers donned their regalia and the first session of the 100th Annual State

Convention was declared officially opened. State First Vice President Antonio Sestito read the Principles of the Order, and the colors were presented by the assigned flag bearers. The National Anthems of Italy and America were sung by Benefit Insurance Commissioner Ross Zagami, and the entire delegation recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The colors were posted and State Chaplain Reverend Father Gregory Mercurio delivered the invocation, asking all delegates to keep in mind the fraternity on which our Order is based. State President Carmelita Bello dedicated the convention in memory of our departed members. State Recording Secretary Marie Jackson was asked to read communications from various lodges and to note any

corrections in the schedule or Convention book. The delegation voted to accept the reports of the State President (with the exception of her proposals), the State officers (with the exception of the proposals of the State Orator), and the Chairmen of Permanent Commissions, with the exception of the Budget and Judiciary Commissions. The Committee on Budget and Finance and Committee on Laws broke out into sessions at 10:15. In the general session, Author Anthony Sammarco gave a slide show presentation to demonstrate the kinds of photos that will go into the 100th Anniversary pictorial history book that the Historical Commission is working on. He reiterated a request that Lodges send in photos for this book. State First Vice President Antonio Sestito spoke on behalf

of the Organization and Education Commission and asked Lodges to contact him if they have questions. State Second Vice President Ron Hill spoke on behalf of the Membership Commission and distributed a packet on membership retention and recruitment guidelines and recommendations. Charity Commission Chairman Carol Rossi presented a new initiative from the Commission to send “get well,” sympathy, and “thinking of you” cards to Lodge members in need. Benefit Insurance Commissioner Ross Zagami spoke on the many different kinds of policies and services the Commission offers, and encouraged delegates to remind Lodge members that confidential services are available to all members. 100th Anniversary Gala CoChairman Margaret Olivieri reminded the delegation that

tickets are available to the Gala on October 4th, and that more information would be forthcoming about hotel and transportation arrangements. Pot of Gold Co-Chairman Rudy Viscomi reported that any sold tickets should be turned in, and that he has unsold tickets if anyone would like to purchase one. He reminded the delegation that the prizes are determined by the number of tickets sold. Executive Director Paul Guida reminded Lodges that it is very important to file their annual Form 990-N information return to the IRS. He reminded the lodges that have lost their nonprofit status to complete the reinstatement process, if they haven’t already done so, and to send a copy of their favorable determination letter to the Grand Lodge so it could be (Continued on Page 2)

The

President’s

Message

from Carmelita Bello

Dear Brothers and Sisters: I hope you all had a wonderful summer with your families and friends. The Grand Lodge officers, committees, and staff are preparing for the 100th anniversary of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts on October 4 at Demetri’s in Foxboro. This celebration commemorates the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices that the founders and early members of this Order endured to create the organization at a time when Italian immigrants needed a community that embraced them and helped them. Over the years our organization has changed as the needs of the community changed. We have developed from an organization that offers support to members, to one that offers support through scholarships, donations, and working within the local communities. We still strive to preserve Italian customs, heritage, and language.

Come and celebrate with us, bring your family, and show everyone what the Sons of Italy is all about. On September 21, the Grand Lodge bocce tournament will be held at the Watertown Sons of Italy. The tournament is always a fun event. Even if you’re not able to play, come and see the action. October is Italian Heritage Month and this is how we do it: On October 1 at 6:00 pm at the Massachusetts State House there is a free reception open to our members celebrating the beginning of Italian Heritage Month. The Italian Heritage Golf Classic will be held on Friday, October 3 at the Merrimack Valley Golf Club. As I previously mentioned, the 100th Anniversary Gala is on October 4 at Demetri’s Function Facility in Foxboro. The Grand Lodge invites all Lodges and members to march with us in the East Bos-

ton Columbus Day Parade on Sunday, October 12. Many of our local lodges also have celebrations planned, so check our website at www. osiama.org for full details on all local and Grand Lodge events. Remember that we’re in this Order to work together to keep our traditions alive. This October, show your Italian pride. Bring your children, grandchildren, friends, and family to a local Columbus Day parade, or an event held by your lodge or one nearby. Take this time during Italian heritage month to share your family history, bring out the old photos, and connect where you are today with where you came from. Let’s celebrate our Italian heritage. I look forward to seeing you at one of these events. Viva Columbus and Italian Heritage Month. Fraternally, Carmelita Bello State President

Fraternamente, Carmelita Bello Presidente Statale

100 th Annual State Convention Highlights (Continued from Page 1) forwarded to the National office. Credential and Registration Committee Chairman Barbara DeStefano reported that the final registration numbers included 158 registered delegates out of 184 authorized, and 28 guests. Once everyone had rejoined the main session, Alpha Paradella gave a presentation on the Casa Monte Cassino, one of the Grand Lodge’s charities, and representatives from the Massachusetts Special Olympics talked about some of their programs. Chairman of the Charitable and Educational Trust Angelo Rossi spoke on charity donations and then accepted donations from the filial lodges. The Chairman of the Bud-

get and Finance Commission, Arthur Bennett, presented the report of the Committee on Budget and Finance, which included the 2015 budget. After much discussion, the delegation passed the 2015 budget as it was presented. The Chairman of the Committee on Laws, State Orator Denise Furnari, reported on the recommendations of the committee on the proposals submitted at this convention. Proposal # 1, submitted by the Venezia Lodge #374 of Rockland, suggested a change to the number of delegates a Lodge is required to send to each convention, as well as a change to the fine assessed for absent delegates. The committee recommended rejec-

tion of this proposal, and the delegation accepted their recommendation. State Orator Denise Furnari submitted six proposals for consideration. The first sought to change the wording regarding the fine for absent delegates at a state convention. The committee recommended approval, with a small amendment, and the delegation accepted their recommendation. The second proposal aimed to change the number of issues of the Sons of Italy News from six to four, to be consistent with the funding provided in the 2014 budget. The committee recommended rejection of the proposal, and (Continued on Page 3)

the delegation accepted their recommendation. The remaining four proposals sought to change the wording of bylaws related to Social Members in order to bring the wording up-to-date with changes already made at the previous National Convention. The committee recommended acceptance of each proposal, and the delegation accepted their recommendation. State President Carmelita Bello submitted four proposals for consideration. The first proposal requested a change in the bylaw regarding the State President’s Testimonial to remove the mandate that one must be held for every state president. The committee recommended rejection of the proposal, and the delegation approved their recommendation. The second proposal aimed to add a bylaw requiring the State Council to set and approve

reimbursements for state officers, the Benefit Insurance Commission, and Chairmen of Permanent Commissions. The committee voted to table the proposal. The third proposal sought to streamline the number of members required for each permanent commission to be more in-line with current membership numbers. The committee

recommended acceptance of the proposal with one amendment (to remove a maximum restriction). The delegation approved their recommendation. The fourth proposal concerned the election process and term limits for Benefit Insurance Commission members. The committee recommended rejection of the proposal, and after a vote by secret ballot, the delegation approved their recommendation by a vote of 106 to 30. State First Vice President Antonio Sestito spoke about the selection of a site for the 2015 State Convention, and reported that after considering several options, the recommendation of the site committee was the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center. He played an informational video for the delegation, and the delegation approved the recommendation. After the Welfare of the Order, the Pot of Gold prizes were drawn before everyone made the trip back home. The Grand Lodge and State Council would like to thank everyone who helped make the Convention move so smoothly.

Boncore, Esq. of Winthrop was appointed by the Supreme Council as the President of the National Commission for Social Justice (CSJ). Boncore, who has been the President of Winthrop Mixed Lodge #2057 since 2009, accepted this prestigious honor to lead the CSJ in its efforts to fight the stereotyping of Italian Americans by the entertainment, advertising, and media industries. “I look forward to leading the Commission for Social Justice, the antidefamation arm of the Order Sons of Italy in America, the biggest and oldest national organization for men and women of Italian descent in the United States,” Boncore said. Founded in 1979, the CSJ also collaborates with other groups to ensure that people of all races, religions, and cultures are treated with dignity and respect. The CSJ monitors the entertainment, advertising, and news industries, contacts offending parties, and alerts

other Italian American organizations, e-mail networks, and concerned individuals to the problem so that they too can take action. Through its Positive Image Program, the CSJ regularly informs the media and general public about Italian American achievements, contributions, history, and culture. The CSJ conducts research, produces studies, teaching tools, pamphlets, exhibits, and other materials on the achievements and contributions of Italian Americans. Larry Lavagna and Charlie DeStefano grilling up a delicious lunch. On Saturday, July 12, 2014 the Junior Division Commission hosted a Family Outing at Salisbury Beach State Reservation. There were over 80 Junior and Senior Lodge members, family, and friends in attendance. Early morning arrivals to the Outing were treated to coffee, muffins, and munchkins for their enjoyment, and at 1:00 P.M. a lunch was served consisting of grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, potato chips, watermelon, soda and water. The weather was beautiful for the outing and many people enjoyed sun bathing at the beach, playing at the playground, while others enjoyed just sitting in the shade conversing. Guests brought snacks that were shared with everyone. Overall, it was an enjoyable day for everyone who made the trip.

Lodge members host fundraising events throughout the year, such as Wednesday pasta nights, porchetta dinners, and other profit generating social dances and festive occasions with proceeds used to make these scholarships possible. The four recipients of the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 scholarships are: Timothy Lonergan, Kyle Collins, Linsey Malia, and Jacqueline Barr. Lucia Cavacini was awarded the Faustino Piccioli Memorial Scholarship, presented by Faustino’s wife Milly and daughter Diane Piccioli. Faustino “Tino” Piccioli joined the Lodge in 1994. He held many offices, including those of Guard and Financial Secretary for the Board of Directors for many years. A valued mentor, Tino was also a skilled bocce player. Upon his passing, lodge members contributed towards the first memorial scholarship and his family will work to raise funds to annually award this scholarship. Kathryn Lentoni is the recipient of the Francis Cristofori Memorial Scholarship which was

awarded by Lodge President Marisa Pilette. Fran passed February 3, 2011. “Friendly Fran, the Pasta Man” was the manager of the lodge’s Wednesday pasta nights for many years. A scholarship recipient himself, Fran graduated from Northeastern University after returning from serving as a pilot during WWII. Jessica Williams was presented with the Anna Massa Memorial Scholarship by Anna’s husband, Robert Massa. Robert Massa and the Lodge lost Anna on April 1, 2012. She was most generous with her time and energies to promote the Lodge and was a skilled bocce player. Victoria Wilder received the Pearl Oliva Memorial Scholarship. Pearl Oliva Cristofori joined the lodge in May 1999, and passed on October 10, 2013. She was married for twelve years to the love of her life, Francis J. Cristofori, who preceded her in death. Tewksbury Lodge #2872 Hosts an Afternoon with Galileo by Chris Parrella On May 24, 2014, Tewksbury Lodge #2872 and the Friends of the Tewksbury Public Library co-sponsored “An Afternoon with Galileo Galilei,” the father of modern science. In the program, titled “Galileo: The Starry Messenger,” Michael Francis, portraying the 17th century professor at the University of Pisa, told Galileo’s story in a dramatic and fun-filled fashion, describing how he made many discoveries in the fields of astronomy, mathematics, physics, and philosophy. He also described how he invented the first refracting telescope and used it to observe the stars, the moon, and other planets and their moons. In addition, the telescope allowed him to prove Copernicus’s theory that the Earth and other planets in the solar system revolved around the sun, and not the other way around. WEST END MUSEUM ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH HONOREE NIGHT. 7:00 PM. Honoring current and former West Enders of Italian heritage who have contributed to preserving the culture of the West End and its rich immigrant history. This years’ honorees: Joseph Caruso (posthumously d.March 5, 2008) and Theresa Raso. Joseph Caruso, was an activist who worked to save the West End during urban renewal in the late 1950s. He was born in Italy and moved to the West End with his family when he was 7. When the city decided to raze the neighborhood, Mr. Caruso made the area’s preservation his goal. With five of his friends, Mr. Caruso, who lived with his family on Green Street above a fish market, started a committee to save the West End and turned a store on Staniford Street into the committee headquarters. The committee sent out fliers to rally residents. Herbert Gans, a professor at Columbia University and author of the Urban Villagers said: “This was a time when local neighborhood activism was unknown. They [the committee] labored bravely.” In the 1980s Mr. Caruso continued working to preserve West End history by helping Jim Campano establish a West End newsletter. Theresa Raso grew up in South Boston and married former West Ender Vincent Raso in 1961. They lived in Acton for most of their marriage raising 4 boys. Theresa taught school in Cambridge and later worked as an accountant while raising a family. In 1996, after her children had grown up, she and her husband Vinnie moved to Whittier Place in the West End. Immediately she got involved with St. Joseph’s Church and also volunteered with Neighborhood Action (now Oasis) to help feed the homeless. A few years later she put her accounting skills to work as longtime treasurer of both the West End Civic Association and the West End Community Center; Theresa is also one of the founders and organizers of the West End Children’s Festival. Free refreshments served. LOCATION: West End Museum, 150 Staniford Street, Boston, MA COORDINATOR: Duane Lucia, 617-416-0718, http://thewestendmuseum.org/

MOVIE: “Two Women” (La Ciociara) Honoring Joseph E. Levine. 6:30 PM. Hollywood producer Joseph E. Levine came from the West End; in 1961 he bought North American distribution rights for Two Women after seeing no more than three minutes of its “rushes.” Two Women, which was based on a novella written by Alberto Moravia, had been directed by Vittorio de Sica, and starred Sophia Loren and Eleanora Brown, who acted out the respective roles of a mother and her young daughter whom World War II had displaced from their home. Levine’s promotional campaign focused on one still photograph, which showed Loren, as the mother, wearing a torn dress, kneeling in the dirt, and weeping with rage and grief. Predicting that she would win the Academy Award for her performance, Levine brought Loren to the United States for interviews, bought space for, and placed, large advertisements in newspapers, and saw to it that Two Women appeared in the cities of residence of Academy Award jury members. Levine’s efforts paid off when Loren became the first cast member of a foreign-language film to win the Academy Award for best actress. It came to be said of him that he “nursed” Two Women towards its ultimate popularity and success. Drama, 1960, NR, 100 minutes, Language: Italian (English Subtitles). FREE (must pre-register). Lodge Member Charlie Tartaglia (left), owner of George’s Café, which where the Lodge meets each month, receives an Appreciation Award from Lodge President Richard Alfonso in recognition of his generosity, dedication and support to the Christopher Columbus Lodge #216. The Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 celebrated their 100th Anniversary with a gala at the Shaw’s Center on Friday, September 6, 2013, with over 50 Lodge members in attendance and many State officials and other Sons of Italy Lodge members joining in the festivities. The Christopher Columbus Lodge # 216 was founded in 1913 when Constantino F. Ciampa, Giovanni Giannini, and Italo Bendinelli received the Charter. But it began in 1901, five years before the birth of the Order of Sons of Italy in America, with a meeting on Center Street in Brockton, Massachusetts. An independent organization of Italians was united by the common desire to protect the dignity of the Italian community because they were beset by constant harassment. The purpose of the organization was to unite the Italian community in the spirit of Christopher Columbus and to help the members understand their civic responsibility. A purpose manifested with efforts to

assist the victims of the 1908 earthquake in Messina, Sicily. In the spirit of cooperation offered by that committee, the premise of the Order of the Sons of Italy was to “unite in one family all the Italians scattered through the USA,” and was translated into a “Fatto compiuto” or “fait accompli” in Brockton with the formation of the Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 in 1913. Today the Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 is proud to continue to uphold this premise. They are determined to keep a positive presence in the City of Brockton with charitable and social work. They have provided annual scholarships through their C&E Trust to over 100 students, and created an annual donation to the Brockton Public Library to purchase books and films that promote Italian culture and literature. Additionally, they help fund and promote local and historic artists of Italian descent through exhibits at the library. They continue to help fund the charitable efforts of the Grand Lodge and participate in annual food-gift baskets given to local families in need.

They wish to portray beneficial awareness in the community and to welcome new members with new and innovative ideas to keep the Lodge vibrant and alive moving forward. Thesuccess of the 100th Anniversary Gala Celebration held on September 6 was due to the vigilant efforts of the Committee, chaired by Todd and Kathy Petti, and co-chaired by Dr. Flaviano DiFalco. Committee members Jody Brunet, Michael Lombardo, and Jacky Bonarrigo helped to make this event such a success. The event was attended by over 250 people who not only enjoyed a sumptuous Italian meal but enjoyed wonderful singing performances by Brocktonians Nancy Gustafson and Matt Cunningham. Lodge member Al Amoroso gave the blessing and Sister Danielle Ross sang a beautiful rendition of The Lord’s Prayer before dinner. Guests listened to the music provided by DJ George “The Silver Fox” Cataldo, and laughed to the comedy of local Comedian Dave Russo. A sing-a-

by Dottie D’Onofrio

(L-R): Scholarship Committee member Barbara Campagna, recipient Pellegrino Conte, Lodge President George Franco, recipient Anthony Rodriguez, and Scholarship Committee Chair Toni Eosco. The Norwood Italian Lodge #1235 recently held its annual scholarship awards dinner on June 3, 2014, at BonCaldo Restaurant in Norwood. Lodge President George Franco greeted members and guests. Denise Furnari, lodge member and State Orator, delivered warm greetings as well as the invocation before the meal. Scholarship Committee Chair Toni Eosco thanked the nearly 55 members and guests for their support of the event. She also recognized lodge scholarship committee members Barbara Campagna, Winnie Carfagno, and Linda Renzi for their volunteer work, and especially for their serious evaluation of the candidates’ application materials for selection of the scholarship recipients. Scholarship award presentations took place immediately following a delicious dinner. Through the fundraising efforts of its lodge members, and with additional donations to the scholarship fund made in loving memory of past longtime lodge members, two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 were awarded to college-bound students. Barbara Campagna made the first presentation to Pellegrino Conte, a graduate of Xaverian High School. Pellegrino is the son of Iva and Walter Conte of Westwood, and the grandson of lodge members Sylvia Conte and Pellegrino Conte of Westwood. Pellegrino will pursue interests in robotics and electrical

engineering at the University of Rochester. Winnie Carfagno presented the second award to Anthony Rodriguez, a graduate of Norwood High School, son of William and Diane Rodriquez of Norwood, and grandson of longtime lodge members Andy and Toni Ciarletta, also of Norwood. Anthony will pursue a major in education at Northeastern University this fall. The Lodge congratulated both recipients and wished them good luck with their future plans. Following the awards, Toni Eosco introduced the guest speaker, Nicholas Rodriguez. Mr. Rodriguez, a Lodge scholarship recipient 5 years ago, is now a graduate of Northeastern University with concentrations in marketing, entrepreneurship, and management of information systems. He is the son of Diane and William Rodriguez and the grandson of lodge members Toni and Andy Ciarletta. Mr. Rodriguez gave an inspiring talk about his various college experiences and the value of community. During his college years, he was able to study rural poverty in the countries of Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic where he worked on developing methods to increase sustainability and promote economic growth. He is currently employed by Bluewolf. He received enthusiastic applause at the conclusion of his presentation and he encouraged the scholarship recipients to get the most out of their next several years in college.
