ETIQUETTE HOCKEY

While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats.

QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

AROUND THE OHL

BRANTFORD BULLDOGS

The Brantford Bulldogs sit on top of both the Eastern Conference and the East Division with a five-point cushion. It has been their high scoring offence mixed with the ability to keep the puck of their own net. Nick Lardis has been leading the way for the team having already surpassed the 70-goal mark, along with his team mate Patrick Thomas who leads the league in assists. As they approach the playoffs it will be key to keep their special teams firing on all cylinders as they currently have the best powerplay in the league.

SUDBURY WOLVES

The Sudbury Wolves have been on fire of late winning five straight games as they try and claw their way into the five seed. Sudbury is in a little bit of no man’s land as they find themselves five points behind the Steelheads and three points ahead of the IceDogs. It has been the big man up front, Kieran Walton leading the way as the forward has taken a big step forward this season already doubling his production from last season. As the Wolves gear up for playoffs they will need to look at tightening up defensively as they have allowed the fourth most goals in the conference.

AROUND THE OHL

WESTERN CONFERENCE KITCHENER RANGERS

The Kitchener Rangers are one of the hottest teams in the league at the moment winning seven of the teams last eight games while picking up points in all of them. It has been a full committee effort for the Rangers all season with goaltender Jackson Parsons being a rock for the team in net. The over age goalie has played 49 games this season, leading the league in wins while sitting second in both goals against average and save percentage.

SOO GREYHOUNDS

The Soo Greyhounds are sitting last in the West Division but find themselves sitting just one point behind the Owen Sound Attack for the final spot in the Western Conference. It has been an up and down season all year for the Greyhounds and that has remained true in their last 10 games going 4-4-1-1, while dropping their last four. Draft eligible forward Brady Martin has been a bright spot for the team collecting 63 points in 53 games, including 30 goals.

GENS REWIND:

A GLIMPSE OF THE PAST

Just about a year ago the Oshawa Generals made a push that saw them leapfrog most of the Eastern Conference on their way to an Eastern Conference Championship.

After a troubling first half to the 2023-24 season the Generals found themselves fighting for a playoff spot late into December. But a couple additions would completely flip that.

Gens general manager Roger Hunt made a couple key trades that brought a whole new identity to a team that looked like it had an untapped potential, bringing in a pair of over agers in Connor Lockhart and Connor Punnett.

Both guys came in and were not afraid to be themselves brining a swagger and edge to the Oshawa Generals that was not there in the first half of the season.

It took a little bit of time for the additions to settle in to the team and their new surroundings, but after a .500 month of February the Generals would get red hot rattling off 12 straight wins, failing to drop a game in the month of March.

“When I look back and really think about it our turn of play started in the overtime win against Erie,” said Roger Hunt. “Getting Lockhart back after a tough loss to the IceDogs was a big boost to the locker room.”

But it was not just the wins that help teams get on track.

“Just before we went on our run there was a bad loss to the Ottawa 67’s,” added the Gens GM. “I think that one really opened our teams’ eyes.”

That it did! It was all up from there not losing another game the entire regular season, locking down the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

It was not an easy journey to that 12-win streak beating the eventual league champs the London Knights on the road, while squeaking out a couple narrow overtime wins against the Kitchener Rangers and the Mississauga Steelheads.

Now that would be nice for this year’s team, but what the Gens really need is to continue their strong play and keep building for the playoffs as they look to build on last years deep run.

PREVIEW GAME DAY

The Oshawa Generals return home for the first time in two weeks as they host the Sudbury Wolves in their Annual St. Patrick’s Day game.

Oshawa is coming off a tough loss to divisional foes the Ottawa 67’s on Friday night as they now sit two points back of the Frontenacs for third place. It has not been the best stretch of hockey for the Gens going 5-4-1-0 in their last 10 games, and with just four games to go they will want to get the ship going in the right direction.

Sudbury enters this one coming off a 2-1 overtime win over the Peterborough Petes coming from behind to get it done. The Wolves are shaping into the team they want to be at the right time of the season, bouncing back after having a five-game winning streak snapped.

Its has been just over a week since the Generals went to Sudbury and lost 5-3 on their northern road trip.

After a back-and-forth period that saw Zackary Sandhu and Calum Ritchie each score goals to tie the game up at 2-2 it was all Sudbury in the second period scoring three goals to make it 5-2.

A lone Colby Barlow goal in the third period was not enough for the Generals to get back into the game falling 5-3.

RECAP LAST GAME

FRIDAY, MARCH 14TH

The Oshawa Generals made their last trip to Ottawa this season and lost 3-2.

In the first period, Ottawa’s Ryan White scored his first career OHL goal to open the scoring 10:31 into the frame. Generals’ Luke Torrance tied the game off a shot from the point by Zachary Sandhu that bounced out front, and Torrance batted home the rebound.

The goal marked his 22nd of the season, a career high for the overage forward. The period ended 1-1 with the shots 14-11 in favour of the 67’s.

Filip Ekberg scored 26 seconds into the second period to regain the lead for Ottawa. After killing off a major penalty, Oshawa eventually tied the game with a superb passing play. Lauri Sinivuori and Ben Danford assisted on Noah Powell’s eighth goal of the season.

Ottawa once again took the lead 9:15 into the third period on a powerplay goal from Luca Pinelli. This time, the Generals did not have an answer and would fall to the 67’s 3-2 in regulation.

Oshawa is back home on Sunday against the Sudbury Wolves and will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.

FROM PLAYER TO COACH:

BRAD MALONE’S JOURNEY TO LEADING THE OSHAWA GENERALS

The Oshawa Generals have hired Brad Malone as the interim head coach, a quick turnaround from his playing career to his coaching one.

He played over 750 professional hockey games between the NHL and AHL with Colorado, Carolina, Chicago and Edmonton’s organization before retiring in the spring of 2024. Malone was known for his big body, two-way game and liked to insert himself physically on every shift.

This play made him a leader in the locker room and earned him the captaincy in Bakersfield, for the last four seasons of his playing career.

“Communication is crucial,” said Malone. “A clear message on expectations of what is needed by everyone on the ice. The details that are part of the game need to be communicated on a daily basis.”

This is a key trait that Brad brought to the Generals organization when he was hired as a player development coach before the season started.

It did not take long to make his imprint on the organization as a leader. One on one interviews with players are a massive part of building their character, ensuring a strong team foundation.

Once November rolled around, Brad was promoted to assistant coach where his role changed. He was able to use his playing experience to help players make adjustments on the fly.

“The ability to make suggestions and corrections in game. Everything happens so fast at ice level,” added the interim bench boss. “Being able to immediately give the individuals feedback was a major difference.”

On December 9th, Brad Malone was named the Interim Head Coach after the organization let Steve O’Rourke go.

Now that Brad is the Head Coach, he sends a clear message to the team.

“Everyone has a seat at the table and [everyone] will be held to the same standard,” explained the newly appointed coach. “Nobody is above the team. Protect the house and work for each other.”

Canadian Tire, Rodman’s Heating and Air Conditioning, Desjardins Insurance, Planet Fitness, Dodd and Soutor, Pizza Pizza, Bluebird Self Storage, Staffing Connections, Professional Dry Cleaners, Gen7 Fuel and Color Compass Corporation have teamed up for the Adopt-A-School program!

This program gives local businesses the chance to give back to the community by purchasing Generals season tickets and donating them to elementary schools throughout Durham Region. The tickets are intended to reward students that excel in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities.
