An Alternative to Shotgun Microphones Klover Products’ 9-inch Klover MiK (KM-09) is a miniature parabolic collector that works with a lavaliere microphone to capture audio from distances not possible with shotgun mics. The KM-09 actually outperforms shotgun microphones in several ways.

First, the parabolic collector of the KM-09 provides mechanical amplification that shotgun microphones don’t. It can capture a normal conversation from more than 25 feet away in a quiet environment. From 6 feet away, the KM-09 provides similar signal levels to a standard microphone placed only 1 foot away from the source.

In many cases, the long-range capability of the KM-09 eliminates the need for a boom pole. The desired audio can often be captured with a KM-09 mic mounted directly to a video camera. If a boom pole is required, the pickup range will be several times greater than a shotgun mic. The mounting feature of the KM-09 also allows it to be mounted on a light stand, or magic arm, providing flexible, discreet mounting options.

Challenges around scaling are among the first obstacles encountered by enterprises looking to capitalize on monitoring their data. As a proven, highly efficient technology that can operate hundreds of nodes at once, ANT BLAZE delivers on this challenge.

Case Study In 2017, global design manufacturer Herman Miller introduced Live OS, a system of smart, cloud-connected furnishings. To date, the system includes sit-

The largest web advertising company reports quarterly revenues of over $25 billion in U.S. dollars. Website owners receive a percentage of that revenue in exchange for carrying adverts.

Commerce, advertising, financial transactions and the security and infrastructure needed to support them was not part of the original web design. The advertising industry has developed methods to track viewers, some of which many consider to be overly invasive, as more users run software to block advertising; however, publishers of web pages see their revenue falling and have started to use more invasive adverts and in greater numbers, damaging users’ per-

The W3C invites participation in a business group on “Web advertising by design” for consideration of features and changes to the web platform that could better and more efficiently support web advertising.

Although the advertising industry has taken a number of steps to improve, including both guidelines for controlling the sizes of adverts and work on reducing click fraud, solutions need to be integrated into the Open Web Platform, including: makers of web browsers, search engines and other technologies need to be able to offer good performance and a good experience; advertisers need reliable information about how many people saw their adverts, and control over audience to

They knew a desk-to-desk mesh solution could achieve this and would minimize the number of cellular gateways needed to backhaul data. After several unsuccessful attempts with their solution provider and Bluetooth-only options, Herman Miller turned to Garmin’s enterprise-friendly ANT BLAZE solution.

Solution By deploying ANT BLAZE mesh technology on every smart desk, Herman Miller established a complete network of connected devices, allowing for other wireless Live OS products to transmit data via the same ANT BLAZE backbone. Since ANT BLAZE can operate independently of existing, on-premise IT infrastructure, they were able to configure Live OS data to be sent directly to an ANT-enabled gateway, without requiring the use of an organization’s IT network.

As a result, customer organizations can

wind, hail, dust and sand storms, so satellite links can stay on-air in extreme conditions. For protecting remote production, news, temporary uplinks, and broadband data terminal satellite uplink antennas, the Walton Portable Radome withstands 85-mile-per-hour (136kph) wind loads.

An operator can quickly assemble our lightweight, airline baggage checkable radome with no tools. It assembles in less than an hour, unlike conventional radomes in its size class, which can take days of crew labor and a crane to install.

LiDAR 101: How LiDAR Technology Enables Autonomous Cars to Operate Safely To bring fully autonomous cars to market, automakers must equip vehicles with sensing technologies that create a virtual map of the vehicle’s surroundings, so its computer can plan a safe driving path.

LiDAR technology provides the information about a vehicle’s surrounding environment needed to make fully autonomous driving a reality. David Hall, Velodyne LiDAR’s Chief Executive Officer and Founder, invented the LiDAR sensor, which helped launch the autonomous vehicle industry.

A LiDAR sensor bounces laser pulses off an object, like a tree, at an enormously high rate – millions of laser pulses each second – and measures how long

the light from the laser takes to reflect from the object to a light detector. The amazing thing about LiDAR technology is this process works for nonstationary objects in real time, such as pedestrians, bicyclists and other cars.

Based on the time of flight, the distance to an object is calculated by the LiDAR device in real time, and the millions of data points are used to generate a point cloud, which is a complex “map” of the surroundings that includes measurements of how far away objects are from the vehicle. This process is kind of like spraying paint all over a surrounding environment in order to highlight objects, make them recognizable and show move-

Cybersecurity: Who Can You Trust?

According to the technology research firm Gartner, more than 25 percent of cyber attacks will involve IoT devices by 2020. Most consumers, however, seem to be unaware that something as innocent as a WiFi-based baby monitor or a home security camera could open the door to cyber criminals. A hacker could cause potential physical, financial and emotional harm should they gain access into an unprotected home security device.

When connected to a monitor or video camera, a hacker could have full access to all of the same controls consumers have when logged in remotely.

This means that if the device has a talk-back feature or the ability to pan and zoom a security camera, the hacker will be able to use that as well.

Without adequate security, these connected devices provide a gateway into personal networks where confidential data can be stolen or vicious malware planted.

Consumers should be educated about the basic steps they can take to protect themselves, including changing password defaults and proper network set up and configuration. But just as importantly, retailers should be diligent when choosing which brand of cameras and monitor they offer.

The cybersecurity incidents that keep occurring are most often associated with products designed to provide maximum convenience to the customer, even if it meant loosening security policies (non-complex password setting policy, remote access and support capability). While providing convenience to customers, the security industry needs to implement the right level of security policies that protect customers’ information.

When choosing an IP-based security solution, it is crucial to scrutinize and evaluate the manufacturer’s cybersecurity policies – what are their principles and practices? Do the built-in security mechanisms offered in their solutions use multi-layered encrypted communications, data protection capabilities and

supporting live content/events.

Waterproof Electronics: A Fairy Tale?

Once upon a time, it was commonly known that the only way your mobile phone could possibly survive being dropped in water was to immediately turn it off, remove the battery and then place the phone in a bowl of rice overnight to dry it out. Flash forward several years and “waterproof” phones are the new standard. How can a device with so many openings and fragile electrical components possibly be waterproof?

Smartphone manufacturers use a variety of sealing techniques to make sure all potential points of least resistance are watertight. Sometimes sealing is as straight forward as strategically using glue in the connection ports or to secure the glass to the phone. Areas like the cable connectors may use rubber gaskets, while headphone jacks and charging

ports use rubber rings to seal the enclosures. Smartphone buttons often have a silicon rubber boot to separate the button from the electrical contacts within the phone. On areas that need to keep water out but let air pass through, like microphones and speakers, manufacturers use a water-resistant breathable mesh fabric membrane to act as a pressure vent.

Sometimes ports, like the charging port, can be protected from water electronically by being made of corrosion resistant metals and programmed to automatically shut off when not in use.

These seals all need to go through rigorous quality testing. The most important type of testing for the waterproofing process is leak testing. Waterproof smartphone manufacturers have dozens of leak testers, like ATEQ’s F28 lite, throughout
