AcuRite Launches Atlas Weather Station Chaney Instrument Co. has announced the release of a new weather station, the AcuRite Atlas. Built with high-precision sensor technology, Atlas allows users to connect to hyperlocal weather conditions. Atlas has the ability to track UV exposure, light intensity and lightning, in addition to monitoring temperature, humidity, rainfall, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction. Drown IP Rating Confusion The emergence of thousands of waterresistant electronics on the market has been a revolutionary development to consumers in the last decade. Everything from smartphones to drones, security cameras and watches are often now marketed as “waterproof.”

It takes some understanding and decoding to be able to determine if the device will fulfill your waterproof expectations. Instead of looking at the marketing terms “waterproof” or “water-resistant,” it is more beneficial to examine the device’s IP rating. IP ratings are standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and

stand for “Ingress Protection” or “International Protection.”

The most common IP ratings for consumer electronics are IP67 and IP68, but what does this mean? The first number, ranging from 0 to 6, refers to the device’s protection against solid objects.

Solid objects can range in size from a 50mm hand (1 rating) to a 2.5mm screwdriver (3 rating), a 1mm wire (4 rating) to being so protected that not even a microscopic dust particle can enter the device (6 rating).

This is a positive move, as 2017 was one of the worst years on record in the last decade. But what else can we do? Changes in Lifestyle Means Changes in Security

Lifestyles have changed. People are now choosing to live in shared spaces, condos or other multi-family housing arrangements, retirees are downsizing and young homeowners are embracing “tiny homes.” These lifestyle changes have created a unique need for a secure place to store valuables, electronics and important documents that is unable to be met by traditional home safes. So, what has Stack-On done to meet this arising need?

To answer that question, we sat down with Shelley Nehrt, Director of Product Categories for Alpha Guardian, to talk about the distinctive features of our new Total Defense Dual Home Safe.

Concern Over Tech Overuse Grows Among Public & Tech Industry In 2017, Pew Research Center reported that 77 percent of U.S. adults owned a smartphone, up from 35 percent in 2011, making it one of the most quickly-adopted consumer technologies in recent history (Pew Research Center, 2017). The allure is by no means limited to adults.

Usage is skyrocketing among children, from toddlers to teenagers. Case in point: A 2017 report from Common Sense Media found that the average amount of time children ages 0-8 spend on a mobile device per day tripled since 2013 (The Common Sense Census, 2017).

American teenagers (13- to 18-year-olds) average about nine hours (8:56) of entertainment media use on any given day, excluding time spent at school or for homework (The Common Sense Census, 2015).

Popular technology use can prompt interesting behaviors. Parents may think kids are spending too much time using technology, yet they themselves may find it difficult to put down their own devices (The Common Sense Census, 2016).

Also, half of parents report checking their phones at the dinner table, a place where usage may be off limits for children. (ASHA, 2016).

One of the more remarkable developments of the past year is growing introspection within Silicon Valley on how the popular technology it created is being used. Several leading figures have publicly raised technology overuse as a concern, questioning its impact on society.

CEDN: What is direct to garment printing?

JC: A direct to garment (DTG) printer utilizes inkjet technology to apply waterbased inks directly onto clothing and accessories. Then, a heat press or tunnel dryer is used to cure the ink into the fabric, ensuring a long-lasting print that stands up to regular wear and washing.

CEDN: What makes DTG different from other printing methods?

JC: Unlike other types of garment printing, DTG offers high-resolution printing with a wide color gamut, so you can achieve fine-detail, photo-quality prints that you can’t get with other printing methods. As a point of reference, screenprinting is one of the oldest and most popular garment printing methods and

it’s typically used for high-volume batches of garments with designs that require only a few different colors. In contrast, DTG is the best choice for shorter runs and one-offs as well as elaborate or highly colorful designs.

CEDN: Why is DTG growing in popularity?

JC: Because DTG makes it easy and relatively inexpensive to design and print high-quality garments, it’s a highly attractive technology to newcomers in the industry. An increasing number of larger print shops are also adopting DTG as a way to supplement their business by accepting one-of-a-kind and low-volume orders.

DTG is also growing in popularity because improvements in technology have made the machines easier to use.

Solution By deploying ANT BLAZE mesh technology on every smart desk, Herman Miller established a complete network of connected devices, allowing for other wireless Live OS products to transmit data via the same ANT BLAZE backbone. W3C Launches Work to Improve Web Advertising Experience Large numbers of websites are funded in part or wholly by advertising. The largest web advertising company reports quarterly revenues of over $25 billion in U.S. dollars.

Website owners receive a percentage of that revenue in exchange for carrying adverts.

Commerce, advertising, financial transactions and the security and infrastructure needed to support them was not part of the original web design. The advertising industry has developed methods to track viewers, some of which many consider to be overly invasive, as more users run software to block advertising; however, publishers of web pages see their revenue falling and have started to use more invasive adverts and in greater numbers, damaging users’ perception of the web.

The W3C invites participation in a business group on “Web advertising by design” for consideration of features and changes to the web platform that could better and more efficiently support web advertising.

LiDAR 101: How LiDAR Technology Enables Autonomous Cars to Operate Safely To bring fully autonomous cars to market, automakers must equip vehicles with sensing technologies that create a virtual map of the vehicle's surroundings, so its computer can plan a safe driving path.

LiDAR technology provides the information about a vehicle’s surrounding environment needed to make fully autonomous driving a reality. David Hall, Velodyne LiDAR’s Chief Executive Officer and Founder, invented the LiDAR sensor, which helped launch the autonomous vehicle industry.

A LiDAR sensor bounces laser pulses off an object, like a tree, at an enormously high rate – millions of laser pulses each second – and measures how long the light from the laser takes to reflect from the object to a light detector. The

amazing thing about LiDAR technology is this process works for nonstationary objects in real time, such as pedestrians, bicyclists and other cars.

Based on the time of flight, the distance to an object is calculated by the LiDAR device in real time, and the millions of data points are used to generate a point cloud, which is a complex “map” of the surroundings that includes measurements of how far away objects are from the vehicle. This process is kind of like spraying paint all over a surrounding environment in order to highlight objects, make them recognizable and show movement.

A robust LiDAR has between eight to 128 laser beams to measure a car’s surroundings. In surround view sensors, the

A recent survey asked users to try each one and rank their favorite based on overall functionality. Here are the results: 1. LoveHandle – The clear winner for function and comfort, LoveHandle passed the pocket-friendly test as the lowest-profile grip in the group.
