Dear Osceola Women, MAGAZINE

March has arrived and it’s time to celebrate Women’s History Month! In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month. During this month we honor the accomplishments of women’s contributions in American history. It is hard to believe at one time women were not allowed to vote, serve on a jury, use birth control or even use a credit card without their husband as a cosigner. Thankfully, times have changed for women! We should be thankful for the way the US has evolved through the years. In this issue, we discuss seasonal allergies on page 6. Many of us have a yellow tint on our vehicles. Did you know that was pollen? Just imagine how much is in the air! Just thinking about it makes me want to sneeze! Osceola Arts introduces their Spring Break & Summer camps on pages 8- 9. These camps focus on visual arts, musical theatre, music and filmmaking. It is time to start thinking about summer time and Osceola Arts would be a great place for the kiddos to spend their time!

Make sure to flip over to “Making HERstory” on pages 18-19. I thoroughly enjoyed researching these historic women and their accomplishments. It was also neat to see how fashion has evolved throughout the years. I sure am thankful for our fashion trends these days compared to some in the past!

4 Simple Hacks to Beat

SEASONAL ALLERGIES Allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. and more than 50 million Americans suffer from them each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When it comes to spring allergies, you don’t need to anticipate the season with dread. There are steps you can take to proactively dodge allergens and mitigate debilitating symptoms, according to the experts at AccuWeather.

Change Your Routine

Are you a morning bather? Experts say that if you suffer from outdoor allergies, you would be wise to switch to EVENING SHOWERS. This will rid your hair and skin of pollen, so you don’t bring it to bed with you. No matter what time of day you shampoo and scrub, you’ll want to wash your linens in hot water, to remove as much pollen as possible.

Consider Your Wardrobe For those times when you must be out and about on high-pollen count days, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect yourself. A scarf or mask over your mouth and nose can be useful when symptoms are severe. When you get home, be sure to remove outerwear, including shoes, in your

6 osceolawoman.com | MARCH/APRIL 2019

mud room or foyer so you DON’T TRACK ALLERGENS THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE, particularly in areas where you sleep and spend the most time. You can make smart decisions about your wardrobe as well as the best time to venture outdoors by consulting digital apps

Protect Indoor Air Fresh air may sound appealing but opening your car and home’s windows is a fast-track to a high pollen count indoors. For a breeze, stick to air conditioning, as FANS CAN KICK UP DUST AND POLLEN INTO THE AIR.

like AccuWeather before leaving the house. This spring don’t let sniffles, sneezing and wheezing get the best of you. For a more comfortable season, check the weather often and take proper precautions.

From dry winds blowing tree pollen into the air, to wet, rainy days causing dust mites and mold to thrive, weather has a huge impact on the spread of allergens and, subsequently, the way you feel, say experts.

Stay in the Know

“Spring allergies are driven by trees and grass pollen, and different people will have their own reactions. If you do suffer from spring allergens, a cold front passing through can bring some relief,” says Alan Reppert, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. “But even when the weather seems quiet, allergens can be present and contribute to illness. For example, when rain begins and washes pollen out of the air, mold spores can climb and cause allergy problems.” GET RELEVANT INFORMATION ABOUT WEATHER AND ALLERGIES in the palm of your hand so you can avoid the worst of it or make necessary preparations when you can’t. One useful tool is AccuWeather’s daily allergy index, which is available on AccuWeather.com and on the free AccuWeather app for iOS and Android. Stay in-the-know by frequently checking the app, which is also a good source of other weatherrelated tips, educational resources and information.

Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital is proud to be an SRC Accredited Surgical Facility.

Nobody wants to have surgery, but if that day comes for you or a loved one, you are sure to want the surgery to be as successful as possible. Robotic surgery, available at Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, offers several advantages to doctors and patients when compared to traditional surgery. Surgeons skilled in this minimally invasive technique use much smaller incisions than traditional surgery, resulting in less trauma, shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries.

What is Robotic Surgery? Also known as robotic-assisted surgery, robotic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses smaller incisions through instruments attached to a robotic arm. During robotic surgery, the surgeon views a high-definition, 3-D image transmitted by a tiny camera (called a laparoscope) from inside the patient’s body. Sitting at a console, the surgeon guides miniaturized surgical instruments attached to three or four robotic arms. Hand, wrist and finger movements are translated into precise movements with a level of accuracy and precision difficult to attain with

the human hand. Complex surgeries are performed through just a few small incisions.

Advantages of Robotic Surgery For patients, robotic surgery offers several benefits. The smaller incisions can result in less scarring and trauma to surrounding tissue. Patients require less pain medicine, and robotic surgeries typically have fewer complications. Shorter hospital stays and recovery times mean patients can return to their normal activities sooner.

Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital – A Leader in Robotic Surgery Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital is among several Orlando Health hospitals accredited as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. The accreditation distinguishes the hospital from other facilities by providing the highest quality of care to its patients as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation. Robotic-assisted surgery is available at Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips for a variety of procedures, ranging from general and colorectal surgeries to urologic and gynecologic procedures. Continuing its quest to provide patients with the most advanced procedures and optimal care, Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips will be expanding its robotic program by adding a second robotic surgical system this spring.

GIRL SCOUTS FIND SYMBIOSIS WITH THE LIBRARY IN

Butterfly Project | By Lisa Jones, OLS staff |

The West Osceola Library, located in Celebration, has partnered with the local Girl Scout Troops and Osceola County Extension Services to create a Butterfly Garden at the library. All of the Girl Scout troops in the nearby community were invited to take part in the preparation and planting of the garden. The Butterfly Project and The Butterfly Garden were 2 library programs created to give the Girl Scouts the opportunity to earn patches. These programs taught the steps needed to create a garden from start to finish, including the planning, budgeting, and selection of plants. The result of these 2 programs was the actual planting of the garden, along with instruction on how the Girl Scouts will maintain the garden over time. AT THE OSCEOLA THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTER

On Saturday, May 4th, from 4:30-9:00 p.m., the Osceola County Therapeutic Equestrian Center will be transformed into an elegant dinner party and Derby celebration to benefit McCormick’s programs.

Vendors hawking icy mint juleps on a warm spring afternoon, ladies in widebrimmed hats and fine dresses, gentlemen in seersucker trousers and bowties, and the melodious tune of My Old Kentucky Home, all under the shadow of the iconic twin spires of Churchill Downs. These are the sights and sounds of the pinnacle of thoroughbred racing, and one of America’s most treasured past times, the running of the Kentucky Derby. All across this great nation, families and friends will gather for backyard bar-b-ques, colleagues will meet up at the local pub, and spectators will fill the stands on the first Saturday in May. Some will come to test lady luck on a $2 bet. Others will come to

soak in the spectacle of merriment and fun. And for some the sirens call in the form of pounding hooves eating up the dirt track. But in Osceola County, Florida, the ladies and gents gathering for the big race will have a grander purpose.

THE HEALING HORSES OF OSCEOLA The Osceola County Therapeutic Equestrian Center is home to McCormick Research Institute (www.mccormick. us), a PATH International (www.pathintl.org) premiere accredited equine-assisted therapy center for Veterans and special needs individuals. I Since 2002 McCormick (originally known as Heavenly Hooves) has been providing therapeutic services in partnership with their specially trained therapy horses to special needs individuals. Founded by CEO Thomasa Sanchez, the organization moved into its permanent home on Rummell Road in St. Cloud in 2016. This 40-acre property features a 14-stall barn, offices, meeting space, tack room, covered and outdoor arenas, round pen, and seven pastures. In 2012, McCormick began partnering with the University of Central Florida, College of Medicine, researching the benefits of equineassisted therapy for Veterans with PTSD. This program, known as Horses & Heroes, is providing mental and physiological healing to Central Florida’s wounded warriors. But the real impact of McCormick’s programs, is best understood “straight from the horse’s mouth.” Rita, parent of a Heavenly Hooves participant, says, “My daughter sustained a head injury during a car accident and has had to learn how to do everything again. Social Security’s Resources

for Women

March is Women’s History Month. It’s a time when we reflect on the achievements and contributions of our nation’s remarkable women. | By Blanca Taylor | Many of these heroes might be people close to you: mothers and daughters, aunts, and grandmothers. Each of them plays a special role in our lives as they provide love and support. Social Security plays an important role in providing economic security for women. Nearly 55 percent of the people receiving Social Security benefits are women. In the 21st century, more women work, pay Social Security taxes, and earn credit toward monthly retirement income than at any other time in our nation’s history. Women face greater economic challenges in retirement. First, women tend to live longer than men. A woman who is 65 years old today can expect to live, on

16 osceolawoman.com | MARCH/APRIL 2019

average, until about 87, while a 65-year-old man can expect to live, on average, until about 84. Second, women often have lower lifetime earnings than men. And, third, women may reach retirement with smaller pensions and other assets than men. Today, women have challenging choices to make. Some may spend their entire adulthood in a career or job outside the home. Some may work for a few years, leave the labor force to raise children, and eventually return to work. Others may choose not to work outside the home. Whether they work, have worked, or have never worked outside the home, women should understand how Social Security can help them and their families.

If you’ve worked and paid taxes into the Social Security system for at least 10 years and have earned a minimum of 40 work credits, you may be eligible for your own benefits. Once you reach age 62, you may be eligible for your own Social Security benefit whether you’re married or not and whether your spouse collects Social Security or not. If you’re eligible and apply for benefits on more than one work record you generally receive the higher benefit amount.

We have specific information for women at www.socialsecurity.gov/ people/women that you can easily share with friends and family.

Giving this gift of knowledge can change the life of a woman you care about.

What Can I Do To Help My Indoor Air Quality During Allergy Season? Air Quality There are many great things that come with spring, including warmer temperatures and the ability to spend a greater amount of time outside. But one factor that can throw a wrench into enjoying the season is the presence of allergens. From runny noses to itchy eyes, seasonal allergies can be an annoyance to any of your family members. And when you wake up with these symptoms instead of feeling like you’ve had a restful night’s sleep, you’re going to want to seek out a solution. And while we usually think of the outdoors when it comes to allergy season, allergens can reside within your indoor space. Many homeowners have become increasingly interested in their indoor air quality and the impact on the home’s occupants.

18 osceolawoman.com | MARCH/APRIL 2019

However, while it’s difficult to eliminate those allergens from the outdoors, there are steps you can take to reduce these contaminants in your home. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) identifies the following as the main sources of indoor allergens: • • • • • • • • •

Pets Wall-to-wall carpet Soft furniture Stuffed toys Bedding Damp areas Indoor plants Mattresses without allergy covers Pillows and bedding you can’t wash in hot water

The AAFA also shares a few steps to help you reduce allergens in your home. • Put plastic covers on the mattresses and pillows. • Wash your bedding once a week. • Vacuum once or twice during the week. • Cover your garbage cans. • Keep pets out of the bedroom. • Close the windows and doors to keep pollen from getting in the home. Keeping your home clean and lowering the opportunity for dust, pollen and other contaminants to enter the home will go a long way to increasing your home comfort. Make a checklist so that you can prepare your home and soak in the warmer temperatures.

Don’t make this allergy season harder than it needs to be. If you would like more information on how you can improve your home comfort with purification or filtration systems, or if you have additional questions on how to find a solution for the quality of air in your space, give Osceola Air, LLC a call at 407-908-8651 to speak with one of our technicians.
