Make sure to turn to page 13, for our special on Men in Business throughout Osceola County. So flip on over and check them out! In our Health section, we have focused on several trending men’s health topics. On page 6, AdventHealth sits down with actor, Tom Hanks, as he discusses what led to his type 2 diabetes. We even snagged a photo from one of my favorite movies, A League of Their Own. Associates in Dermatology is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year! CONGRATULATIONS! On page 8, Dr. Steppie writes about Melanoma occurring in men over the age of 50. This is a must read. This is a great article for any man (or woman) to read. I was lucky enough to grow up fishing on our local lakes. HEALTH

Whether you have diabetes or not, changing your daily diet and routine can be tough — just ask Tom Hanks. The “Toy Story 4” actor, who recently visited AdventHealth for Children in Orlando, accepts much of the responsibility for the food choices earlier in life that led to his type 2 diabetes.

I’m part of the lazy American generation that has blindly kept dancing through the party. I was heavy,” Hanks, 62, told the British magazine Radio Times in 2016. “I was a total idiot. I thought I could avoid it by removing the buns from my cheeseburgers.

He has one defense, though, that most of us don’t. In preparation for his role as a baseball coach in “A League of Their Own,” Hanks gained 30 pounds. The next year, he had to lose it to play an attorney with AIDS in “Philadelphia.” Later, he dropped 55 pounds to play a man stranded on an island in “Cast Away.”

Tom Hanks Shares How Eating Poorly Led to His

DIABETES

Controlling Unhealthy Weight Fluctuation

Even if most of us don’t diet to fit a Hollywood role, the story of gaining and losing weight may be familiar. We might overhaul our eating but find it doesn’t last as we watch the number on the scale climb back up. When we’re too heavy, our bodies can have a more difficult time moving sugar from our blood to our cells. But having high blood sugar levels can cause trouble in the long term. This is called diabetes. Our everyday eating choices are at the center of preventing, managing and even reversing diabetes. As Hanks explains, “my doctor says if I can hit a target weight, I will not have type 2 diabetes anymore.”

“The gaining and the losing of weight may have had something to do with developing diabetes because you eat so much bad food and you don’t take any exercise when you’re heavy,” Hanks said at a London press conference to promote his 2013 film, “Captain Phillips.”

A Resource for Eating Well

As you’ve probably learned, it’s not easy. To help people eat right and enjoy their food, we’ve written a cookbook and guide for people with diabetes. It’s called, “Simply Healthy: The Art of Eating Well, Diabetes Edition,” and it’s available on Amazon. It’s filled with healthy, tasty recipes along with eating tips. Here’s a sampling of some of those tips: • Eat at least three meals every day. Do not skip meals — especially breakfast. This spreads your calories through the day and controls the amount of sugar going into your blood. It also helps prevent you from becoming too hungry, which can lead to overeating at meals. • Avoid fasting for more than 12 hours. “Fasting” means going without calories from food or drinks. Skipping meals and snacks causes low blood sugar levels.

“I'm 57 and I don't think I'm going to take on any job — or even go on any vacation again — and see to it that I can gain 30 pounds," he said.

Using simple, easy-to-understand language, the book also walks readers through the nutrition facts that matter to them, like the types of carbs.

If you have diabetes, we want to be your partner in making the eating and exercise changes that let you continue to lead the life you want. At the AdventHealth Diabetes Institute, we provide you with comprehensive services like diabetes education, nutrition counseling and a team a dedicated experts to help you achieve your whole health goals.

The book also strives to make eating right an enjoyable experience. For example, it gives you the tips and strategies to eat out without taking a detour from your eating plan.

Our book is another way we help you take that vision of whole health from the hospital to your home. To download five free recipes from the book, visit our website.

• Control your food portion sizes at each meal. Eating about the same amount of carbs every day helps keep blood glucose levels stable.

Your Diabetes Support Team at AdventHealth

For his part, Hanks says he’s done gaining weight for a role, telling reporters the practice is “more or less a young man’s game.”

MELANOMA occur in MEN

(the deadliest form of skin cancer)

over age 50 By Michael Steppie, MD

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, Associates in Dermatology proudly continues to deliver an unrivaled level of care to patients across numerous Central Florida communities including 5 in Osceola county. Its president and medical director, Dr. Steppie, is one of the few elite members of the Skin Cancer Foundation's Amonette Circle and his expert opinions have been quoted in numerous publications including Men's Health Magazine. He is a board-certified dermatologist and

8 osceolawoman.com | JULY/AUG 2019

Mohs micrographic surgeon, and his role as an ardent supporter of the Central Florida community goes far beyond the routine practice of dermatology. "I feel my most important goal is to help educating the public about the risks of skin cancer and encouraging them to adopt simple practices to help protect their skin!" says Michael Steppie, MD. Dr. Steppie continues by saying: The latest skin cancer foundation statistics show that 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. However, our year-round sunny

climate means local residents spend more time than normal enjoying the outdoors as well as higher level of exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Unfortunately, it also might explain why Florida’s rates of new skin cancer diagnoses are higher. However, I also wish to stress that men are especially at risk… Says Dr. Steppie. In fact, in 2012 he wrote an article which was published in the Skin Cancer Foundation Journal "Skin Cancer and the Gender Gap: Why More Men Die from Skin Cancer".

"

Men tend to misperceive their level of risk and they are also more likely than women to skip recommended precautions such as sunscreen and protective clothing but they are also especially notorious for skipping visits to the doctor… so what might have been a simple, easily treatable skin cancer goes untreated for too long and becomes a more serious or even life-threatening.

"

Dr. Steppie continues, “I wish they could take a cue from women… as about half of all melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) occur in men over age 50”.

You can learn a thing or two about skin care and your skin cancer risk from the women in your life, “Women pay attention to their skin and take precautions early, so should you.” Says Dr. Steppie, then he continues, using the famous axiom from Benjamin Franklin: “one ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”!

Research shows that just one blistering sunburn can double your chances of developing melanoma later in life. Make sun protection as part of your daily ritual and seek shade, avoid the sun as much as possible when the sun’s rays are the strongest, between 10am and 4pm!

• Wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a widebrimmed hat (preferably sun-protective clothing, accessories and swimwear carrying a UPF 50+ label), and UV-blocking sunglasses. • And if you notice a mole changing in color, size or texture, Contact Associates in Dermatology to schedule a skin check.

All skin types can develop skin cancer, including people who tan easily or have naturally dark skin. Here are a few more important tips: • Use a sunscreen SPF 30+ • Apply approximately sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure. • Reapply sunscreen regularly and after swimming or sweating and remember that water and sand magnify the damaging rays of the sun, increasing your chance of sunburn.

HEALTH

CHEST PAIN CAN BE FRIGHTENING.

DIGESTIVE

The fail proof reaction if you experience chest pain? Don’t ignore it: the first order of business is to see a doctor promptly to rule out heart trouble. Chest pain is the most common symptom of a heart attack or heart disease, and involves a feeling of uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Learn the signs and symptoms of a heart attack (see sidebar), and when in doubt, always have it checked out.

Chest pain related to a digestive disorder can include: • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – also known as acid reflux or heartburn, is caused when stomach acid washes back up from the stomach into the esophagus. It can cause intense chest pain felt just below the breastbone – especially at night. A recent study of ER patients at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston who complained of serious chest pain revealed GERD in 57 percent of patients. • Esophageal spasm – is a disorder of the esophagus and involves abnormal muscle contractions in the tube that carries food to the stomach. These muscle spasms make swallowing difficult and painful, and can cause chest pain. • Hiatal hernia – occurs when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity, allowing food and acid to back up and cause heartburn and chest pain.

Once heart trouble has been ruled out as a possibility for your pain, several other conditions that mimic the pain of heart trouble need to be considered. These conditions typically involve the digestive, respiratory or musculoskeletal systems – and while they may not be a health emergency, most require prompt medical treatment to relieve symptoms and effectively manage the condition to minimize its effects on your overall health.

Chest pain linked to respiratory problems might include: • Pulmonary embolism – or a blood clot in the lung – which can cause deep chest pain and is accompanied by shortness of breath. • Pleurisy – the inflammation of the lining around the lung, which can cause sharp chest pain that worsens when you take a deep breath or cough.

When it happens, it’s natural to assume that something is wrong with your heart, but chest pain can signal a variety of other conditions ranging from digestive disorders to respiratory issues. Unfortunately, it can be hard to distinguish the source of chest pain and determine if you should head to the ER, wait to see if symptoms subside, or take an antacid.

10 osceolawoman.com | JULY/AUG 2019

RESPIRATORY

SKIN/MUSCULOSKELETAL

Other chest pain can be linked to musculoskeletal disorders, such as: • Sore muscles/muscle strain – also known as chest wall pain. It is often felt by athletes who begin a new or different exercise regime or increase the amount of exercise. • Injured ribs/pinched nerves – a broken or cracked rib or pinched nerve can cause chest pain, especially when you cough or breathe deeply. • Shingles – this skin and nerve condition caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus can cause sharp pain extending from the chest to the back. Burning chest or rib pain can signal the onset of shingles, and occur just before the rash develops. Even if you suspect your chest pain is not heartrelated, check with a doctor before attempting self-treatment at home. St. Cloud Regional Medical Center is an Accredited Chest Pain Center from the American College of Cardiology, so to learn more on heart attack warning signs or to get more information on heart care, visit StCloudRegional.com.

Symptoms of a Heart Attack Both men and women experience chest pain and other “classic” heart attack symptoms in common, but there are differences to be aware of. The longer a person goes without treatment, the greater the damage, so know the signs:

• Chest discomfort/pain • Upper body pain • Shortness of breath • Lightheadedness/dizziness • Cold sweat • Nausea/vomiting

If you think you need to see a cardiologist, St. Cloud Medical Group offers three local office locations with board-certified physicians. Visit StCloudPhysicians.com to request an appointment. MIKE FISHER Field of Business: LAW ENFORCEMENT

Corporate Security | Candidate for Sheriff

Since the age of 19 (1987), I served at the Osceola County Sheriff ’s Office, retiring at the rank of Captain (2017). I have worked in many areas of the Sheriff ’s Office most were in the operational areas. As a Field Training Officer in the Patrol Division I trained new deputies. I spent time as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division. As a Detective, I have worked everything from burglaries to homicides, and became knowledgeable in all aspects of the investigation’s world. Staying in Investigations I worked as a Narcotics and Gang Detective, as well as in a Street Crimes Unit. I gained considerable knowledge investigating drug and gang related crimes (prostitution and robberies). I spent time investigating tourist related crimes as part of a tactical unit and worked in the Civil, Warrants and Court Security units. As a Sergeant for five years, I gained valuable knowledge in leading others while supervising a Field Training Squad. In 2005, Sheriff Hansell, asked me to create a new unit to investigate Tourist Crime. The Tourism Policing Unit was created. As a Lieutenant for seven years, I learned the management side of law enforcement and continued to build and diversify my experience. I gained knowledge in managing several areas of the agency, always staying on the operational side of law enforcement. I managed a Field Training Platoon in Patrol furthering my knowledge in the

training of new deputies. I returned to the Criminal Investigations Division, commanding the West Criminal Investigations Division. I later managed and redesigned our Intelligence Section and added more Crime Analysts to the Sheriff ’s Office. During my time as a Lieutenant I was also the Commander of the Emergency Response Team. In 2016 I was promoted to Captain over the West region of Osceola County where I later retired. Today, I work for Universal Orlando and head-up their Investigations Department. Working on the corporate security side I have taken many principles of leadership that I learned in law enforcement and applied them successfully in the corporate world. Still having a love for law enforcement, Osceola County and knowing what it takes to lead a modern engaged law enforcement agency, I decided to run for Osceola County Sheriff in 2020. As your Sheriff, I promise to Focus Back on Policing; Engaging our Youth; Address Homelessness; Tourism & Safety and Accountability to Our Citizens. Let’s Work together to make Osceola County a safe place to Live, Work & Play!

3 Reasons to go

Fishing on your next day trip When the weather warms up, it's the perfect time to spend a day casting on the water. Whether you're an experienced fisherman, a novice or a family looking for a fun, all-ages activity, fishing is an easy and enjoyable choice. Here are three reasons for you and your family to go ďŹ shing for your next day trip:

It's a fun way to spend time together. Fishing is a fun activity that gets kids outdoors and engaged, and it's easy for anyone to participate, regardless of their age. Fishing allows friends and families to enjoy a relaxing day together, and helps keep their focus on each other, nature and the activity at hand. For kids interested in fishing on a regular basis, organized youth fishing programs are becoming increasingly popular nationwide. These programs and high school fishing teams are growing rapidly, getting support from well-known fishing companies including lure manufacturer Rapala, which sponsors the Student Angler Tournament Trail. "We are witnessing an exciting explosion in youth enjoyment of fishing," says Rapala marketing director Matt Jensen. "High school and college fishing teams are growing faster than we've ever seen and it's encouraging kids to get into the sport at a younger age." These programs are a great way to teach kids fishing basics, allowing them to pursue a lifelong sport. Summer is an ideal time to sign kids up for fishing camps and schedule fishing trips for the whole family.

It's accessible. Many people live near lakes or other bodies of water, allowing easy access to the sport. For others, water may be just a short drive away, making for a perfect one-day escape or weekend getaway. Also, fishing isn't complicated to learn and doesn't require a ton of expensive equipment. Whether you own or rent a boat, or fish from a dock or shoreline, learning the basics with an affordable rod and reel is something anyone can do. Also, there are plenty of lure options that make fishing a quick and fun pursuit for any skill level. Here are a few easy-to-use choices: * The Original Floating Rapala is the world's No. 1 "go-to" lure. Found in more tackle boxes than any other bait, it's versatile and effective. Designed with a natural minnow profile, the bait offers anglers the ability to reach any depth, making it perfect for catching a host of game fish, no matter where they lurk. Its patented wounded minnow swimming action continues to be irresistible to fish decades after its debut.

* The Rapala DT (Dives-To) Series is a favorite choice for professional bass anglers. This crankbait comes in a variety of sizes, allowing the user to target specific depths and stay in the "strike zone" longer than any other crankbait on the market. Swimming with an attention-grabbing side-to-side motion, the Rapala DT-Series is a must-have lure for catching smallmouth and largemouth bass.

* The Storm 360GT Searchbait is the ultimate confidence lure. Designed to be fished anywhere by anglers of all skill levels, its true-to-life rattling jig head and soft-plastic minnow profile creates a natural presentation that fools fish time and time again.

Here are additional health benefits that come with fishing outdoors:

It's good for you. Spending time outdoors offers significant health benefits. One huge advantage of fishing together is that it allows families to get away from screens. Everyone can set their phones and gadgets aside to enjoy time in nature and relish each other's company without distractions. If a child is spending too much time with electronics, breaking up their routine with an outdoor activity like fishing can expose them to the benefits of in-person interaction, engaging with the real world and experiencing the beauty of nature.

VITAMIN D. Just 10-15 minutes of midday sun provides a healthy dose of vitamin D, which helps bodies absorb calcium. This boosts bone growth and health, and fights disease. Vitamin D also elevates mood, helping with depression. RELAXATION. Being outdoors, breathing fresh air and spending time on a body of water relieves stress and lowers blood pressure. For people constantly on the go, it's a great way to take a much-needed break. EXERCISE. Walking and boating helps burn calories and increases heart rate. And even though the participants may not notice, fishing helps stretch and flex some of the body's underused muscles. With its widespread accessibility, health benefits and ease of participation, fishing is a great way to get outside and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. You just might catch some fish - and have a great time doing it.

ESTATE PLANS CAN HELP YOU ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE

| By Cleve Grissom |

The word “estate” conjures images of great wealth, which may be one of the reasons so many people don’t develop estate plans – after all, they’re not rich, so why make the effort? In reality, though, if you have a family, you can probably benefit from estate planning, whatever your asset level. And you may well find that a comprehensive estate plan can help you answer some questions you may find unsettling – or even worrisome. 24 osceolawoman.com | JULY/AUG 2019

Here are a few of these questions: WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY CHILDREN? With luck, you (and your co-parent, if you have one) will be alive and well at least until your children reach the age of majority (either 18 or 21, depending on where you live). Nonetheless, you don’t want to take any chances, so, as part of your estate plans, you may want to name a guardian to take care of your children if you are not around. You also might want to name a conservator – sometimes called a “guardian of the estate” – to manage any assets your minor children might inherit. WILL THERE BE A FIGHT OVER MY ASSETS? Without a solid estate plan in place, your assets could be subject to the time-consuming, expensive – and very public – probate process. During probate, your relatives and creditors can gain access to your records, and possibly even challenge your will. But with proper planning, you can maintain your privacy. As one possible element of an estate plan, a living trust allows your property to avoid probate and pass quickly to the beneficiaries you’ve named. WHO WILL OVERSEE MY FINANCES AND MY LIVING SITUATION IF I BECOME INCAPACITATED? You can build various forms of protection into your estate planning, such as a durable power of attorney, which allows you to

designate some-one to manage your financial affairs if you become physically or mentally incapacitated. You could also create a medical power of attorney, which allows someone to handle health care decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so yourself. WILL I SHORTCHANGE MY FAMILY IF I LEAVE SIGNIFICANT ASSETS TO CHARITIES? Unless you have unlimited resources, you’ll have to make some choices about charitable gifts and money for your family. But as part of your estate plans, you do have some appealing options. For example, you could establish a charitable lead trust, which provides financial support to your chosen charities for a period of time, with the remaining assets eventually going to your family members. A charitable remainder trust, by contrast, can provide a stream of

income for your family members for the term of the trust, before the remaining assets are transferred to one or more charitable organizations. As you can see, careful estate planning can help you answer many of the questions that may be worrying you. Be aware, though, that certain aspects of estate planning, especially those related to living trusts and charitable trusts, can be complex, so you should consult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor about your situation. But once you’ve got your plans in place, you should be able to face the future with greater clarity and confidence.

Feeling

STRESSED at Work?

Try These 5 Strategies Feeling stressed at work? If so, you're not alone. A recent Poll revealed that 55% of Americans said they experienced stress "a lot" during the day. In the workplace, stress can affect your attitude, relationships with your colleagues and your work performance. Although a modest amount of stress is normal, high levels of stress can be dangerous to your health and may contribute to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, anxiety and depression. Fortunately, there are ways to help manage stress. Ann Marie O'Brien, R.N., national director of health strategies, UnitedHealthcare, shares the following tips to consider that may reduce your workplace stress and get you back on a healthy track performing at your usual best.

1 s.

s Talk to your bo

Consider having an open discussion with your boss about the stressors associated with your work responsibilities. Ask if there is an opportunity for additional skills training, or possibly even restructure your job to make it more manageable and better aligned with your interests and skills. Also, check if your company has an employee assistance program (EAP), which may provide available counseling and online resources.

26 osceolawoman.com | JULY/AUG 2019

Brush up on y time -manage our ment skills. We've all had days when it seems impossible to get everything done. In some cases, poor time management is the reason we feel this way, which then may trigger stress. For your next work assignment, talk with your supervisor before getting started to plan realistic goals, priorities and deadlines.

3 of Take advantage eing b workplace wellprograms. An increasing number of employers are offering well-being programs through their health plan and are making healthier food options available in the workplace. Some employers offer gym reimbursement programs such as UnitedHealthcare's Gym Check-In, have onsite workout rooms, offer stand-up desks, and encourage walking meetings and well-being challenges like "taking the stairs." Remember, it's important for your physical and mental health to combine exercise with a well-balanced diet.

5 Focus on yourself. Grow your k. support networ If you have a close colleague at work, talk with that person and explain your work stressors and brainstorm possible solutions. If you don't, then reach out to friends and loved ones. It's important that you don't isolate yourself after a stressful event.

If you're feeling stress, a simple treat such as going to a movie, enjoying your favorite meal, or just getting away to take a brief walk can give you time to unwind and recharge. If you cannot get a handle on your stress, talk to your doctor. He or she may recommend a counselor who could help you find other ways to help reduce or manage the unhealthy stress in your life.

DO HOUSEPLANTS IMPROVE

air quality IN YOUR HOME?

The air quality in your home effects a lot—your comfort, allergies and even the aromas in your home. Taking care of it is important, but difficult. In fact, studies have shown that indoor air pollution can be even harsher than outdoor air pollution. Knowing that, it only makes sense that homeowners continue to research ways to purify the air they breathe each day. One of the most common ideas is houseplants. In theory, it makes sense that a living thing producing oxygen in your home would positively impact air quality. But does it make a difference?

WHAT’S THE REAL IMPACT OF HOUSEPLANTS ON AIR QUALITY? In the 1980s, scientists at NASA studied the impact common houseplants had on air quality in a closed chamber. Within that closed chamber, they found the plants had a positive effect on air quality. In 2009,

28 osceolawoman.com | JULY/AUG 2019

additional research was completed by the University of Georgia to determine the impact houseplants had on toxins in the air. Again, it was established that—in a closed setting—the plants studied reduced toxins. While research indicates plants can have a noteworthy impact on a closed space, there’s one issue when it comes to translating that to your residence. Your home is not a closed research area. So, it’s tough to say what—if any impact—houseplants have on your home’s air quality. According to Time Magazine, the air in your home changes regularly and depends heavily on the outdoor air quality around your home. Beyond that challenge, the factors that plants can impact are fairly limited. According to the American Lung Association, studies have shown that plants can get rid of harmful gases found in homes, like formaldehyde.

Sadly, gases aren’t the only pollutants in your home hurting your air quality. Particles like pet hair, dust, mold or pollen are also moving around your home—and there’s nothing plants can do about those. OTHER SOLUTIONS While houseplants might not be able to fix all the indoor air quality issues in your house, there are HVAC-centered solutions that can help. Keep Your System Clean. If you want to keep pollutants from circulating around your home, begin with your HVAC system. Sustaining a clean system is one of the smartest ways to keep your air clean. Check your air filter frequently and change it when it appears dirty. Capturing particles with your air filter is your first and simplest defense against poor air quality. Schedule annual maintenance to have a technician check out your system. In addition to regular tune-ups, they’ll confirm your system is clean.

Think About an Air Purifier. If you want to grab even the smallest pollutants in your home, consider an air purifier. A few models can capture allergens and bacteria as small as .01 micron. That is pretty small at one-thousandth of a millimeter. The pros at Osceola Air, LLC can help you select a system that works for your home. Try a Humidifier. The humidity in your home also affects your air quality. Make sure your home stays comfortable and as irritantfree as possible by maintaining a humidity level between 30 and 50 percent. You can choose from portable or whole home humidifiers to help.

While houseplants can’t make a significant difference in your air quality, there’s no harm in keeping them around. If you’re ready to enhance the quality of the air in your home, Osceola Air, LLC can help. Give us a call at 407-908-8651 or arrange an appointment online to get started. We’ll help you figure out all your options.
