to distribute masks, sanitary pads, water purifiers, thermometers, soaps, art kits, stationery and so much more. While we recognised the need for immediate onground relief, we also realised that our children did not have access to computers and mobile phones. To assist them with their school work and build our programme on the foundation of digital literacy, we started 4 Digital Learning Centres across the city. This is all due to our collective effort. Your yoga workshops, cycling and marathon challenges and many creative fundraising initiatives have our eternal gratitude.

We made it! We have overcome 2020 with great difficulty and with a lot of support from our donors, partners and well wishers. On the ground, I have seen immense suffering. However, I am relieved and grateful that we were able to help families during these trying times. We distributed over 3300 food kits to families in Mumbai, Thane and Yadgir in Karnataka. We upgraded our distribution network and were also able

I would also like to share a few organisational updates with you. We celebrated 10 years of OSCAR in 2020. We spent the year doing what we do best, helping people! We shifted into a new office near Horniman Circle and have an exciting and energetic workspace for our team to work from. We have stepped back from Delhi for now and have decided to focus on the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Yadgir district in Karnataka. We have also worked tirelessly towards delivering our programme

digitally. While we have had very good success with the Young Leaders through Zoom meetings, it was especially challenging for children as they do not have access to cell phones and computers. Lastly, I would like to thank my staff, many of whom have battled COVID or have cared for a loved one fighting the disease. There have been extraordinary challenges this year but together, we will move forward and overcome.

“This year has been like no other for us. I have nothing but admiration for every member of our team, as they have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to provide help, support and hope for the communities we serve.”

Since 2016, OSCAR has operated multiple batches in rural Karnataka with a focus on delivering football and life skills sessions. A small local team of staff and young leaders coordinate with our core team in Mumbai to ensure smooth and high quality delivery. The rural project is a fantastic learning experience for us and

is a blueprint on how to conduct our programme in rural areas. The project in Karnataka is unique as challenges, infrastructure and response of participants greatly differ between rural and urban areas. In the near future, we hope to expand and build our presence in Karnataka and explore more rural projects. 6

WHO WE ARE ORGANISATION FOR SOCIAL CHANGE, AWARENESS AND RESPONSIBILITY (OSCAR) is a football for development non-profit dedicated to empowering children and youth in low-income communities in India. OSCAR currently reaches out to children in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Karnataka through its football, education and young leader programmes.

MISSION We use the power of football and a network of Young Leaders to develop life skills and improve educational attainment for children from underprivileged communities in India.

VISION A world where all children and youth have an equal opportunity to succeed.

8

OSCAR AND UNSDG OSCAR Foundation reviews and reflects on its programmes to provide maximum benefits to its beneficiaries. We have designed our programmes to adhere to UN Sustainable Development Goals. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises physical inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Through our football and life skills sessions, we provide an opportunity for children to remain active and healthy. OSCAR operates centres aimed towards digital literacy at 4 locations. We believe digital education is crucial today and have a variety of courses for different age groups and skill levels. Our life skills sessions help impart socioemotional learning. We incorporate gender equity into all our programmes with the ultimate goal of achieving gender equality. Our 'Kick Like a Girl' project aims to achieve these goals through an organisation wide cultural change aimed at all stakeholders including staff, beneficiaries and parents. 40% of our staff are OSCAR beneficiaries belonging to low-income communities that OSCAR operates in. Through capacity building efforts ranging from digital courses to coaching certifications, we help create an environment where people with little or no resources can succeed in a professional setting. OSCAR programmes work with children irrespective of their gender, religion, caste and race. We also started ‘Enabling Change’, our disability inclusion project that provides football coaching for children with disabilities in a safe environment.

9

OUR PROGRAMMES FOOTBALL PROGRAMME

OSCAR Foundation believes the core values inherent in football are principles necessary for community development. Based on our ‘No School, No Football’ policy, OSCAR Foundation provides football and life skills sessions to children from underprivileged backgrounds on the condition that they attend school regularly.

EDUCATION PROGRAMME

OSCAR Foundation offers interventions in early childhood education and digital learning. Through the early learning centre, we address all aspects of early childhood development. As a number of beneficiaries belong to families that have not been formally educated, we also counsel parents on the importance of education.

YOUNG LEADER PROGRAMME

The Young Leader Programme is a key ‘football for development’ initiative that is the foundation for the sustainability of our organisation. Youth from low-income communities including previous OSCAR beneficiaries are identified and trained to work with children from underprivileged communities. 10

SPECIAL PROJECTS ENABLING CHANGE

O-SSE ELITE FOOTBALL PROJECT

‘Enabling Change’ is our disability inclusion project aimed at helping children with disabilities participate in football and life skills sessions in a safe environment. We deliver specially designed activities keeping in mind their needs.

The OSCAR SSE Elite Football Project is a unique project that aims to give talented young football players in Mumbai an opportunity to compete in All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) youth leagues.

COMPOSING FUTURES

KICK LIKE A GIRL Our ‘Kick Like A Girl’ project advocates for gender equity in polarised low-income communities. We encourage girls to challenge the preconceived roles of women in society and educate them about their capabilities and freedoms.

‘Composing Futures : Music for Good’ is a project by Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE), Music Heals International (MHI) and OSCAR Foundation that uses music as a tool to bring about positive change in the lives of children. 11

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS Holistic COVID Recovery In 2020, Manchester City FC conducted virtual Young Leader trainings which revolved around adapting to the new normal and working with children in a post COVID world. Our Young Leaders also had the opportunity to attend sessions with Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith and Wimbledon Champion Marion Bartoli. Through its 'Cityzens Giving for Recovery' campaign, we have received financial support for setting up 4 Digital Learning Centres (DLC) which have a capacity to reach out to over 1000 children every year. In 2021, employees of Mumbai City FC participated in painting and decorating our DLC in Goregaon. Throughout the year, our work has been featured on Manchester City FC's website and social channels, a testament to our strong partnership. 12

New Beginnings in Chembur In December 2020, OSCAR Foundation opened a brand new Digital Learning Centre (DLC) in Chembur, Mumbai. OSCAR has operated football and life skills sessions in Chembur since 2018. The inauguration of the centre was attended by H.E Mr. Yaakov Finkelstein, Israel's consul general in Mumbai. He spent time with the children and spoke to them on the importance of digital literacy in the 21st century. Our DLC in Chembur aims to reach out to 250 children in 2021-2022. We are overwhelmed by the response of the community towards our centre with 63 enrolments including parents who have passed their NIIT course through the OSCAR DLC.

13

ACTIVITY UPDATES Our coaches and teachers sent activities, quizzes and academic material to children via Whatsapp. We also encouraged children and parents to follow COVID appropriate behaviour.

We arranged a series of 17 workshops for our Young Leaders with a focus on a number of topics ranging from career options to mental wellbeing and skill development.

We worked with our coaches and teams to design new activities and update our life skills curriculum. In early 2021, we also had a chance to meet on field and conduct 'Train the Trainer' sessions on ground.

14

ACTIVITY UPDATES Zumba, guided meditation and physical fitness sessions were conducted virtually for beneficiaries of our Enabling Change project. It was a joy to see children and parents actively engage with our trainers.

We conducted several sessions on the importance of menstrual hygiene and appointed Gender Master Trainers to facilitate healthy discussion on gender discrimination and the path to equality.

OSCAR Foundation teams participated in a number of tournaments when lockdown restrictions were relaxed. Our senior girls team made it to the semi-finals of the Goals Love Girls Cup. 15

ACTIVITY UPDATES We conducted special workshops on child safeguarding for staff, young leaders and children. OSCAR has a child safeguarding committee and a child protection policy accredited by 'Keeping Children Safe'.

Trainers from CORE and MHI conducted online music classes for our trainers participating in our 'Composing Futures' project. From Haiti to LA and Mumbai, we connected through our love for music. In December, founder Ashok Rathod was awarded the Apollo Tyres Go the Distance Hero award for his exceptional contribution in the sport for development sector with OSCAR Foundation.

16

ACTIVITY UPDATES In December 2020, OSCAR Foundation shifted into a new, modern office near Horniman Circle. The spacious office can seat 50 employees and will always have room for YOU! We can't wait to welcome you to our new space. OSCAR Foundation celebrated 10 years of operation in 2020. While we were unable to meet due to the pandemic, we hosted an online celebration with our beneficiaries, well wishers and donors.

17

OSCAR Foundation with Innoven Capital and Paree Sanitary Pads held Women's Day events at Cuffe Parade, Goregaon and Powai. Our Young Leaders conducted workshops and fun activities for the mothers of our beneficiaries.

COVID-19 RELIEF EFFORT In 2020, OSCAR Foundation rapidly adapted to service the needs of our beneficiaries and communities. Through our network of young leaders, coaches and teachers, we reached out to over 3300 families with essential food supplies and supplemented the same with water purifiers, sanitary pads, hygiene kits, art supplies and more. This herculean task would not have been possible without the outpour of support by our donors, well wishers and corporate partners. With over 40 tons of relief material distributed in FY 20-21, we would like to thank everyone involved for their contribution during these tough times.

3387 families supported

24000 kgs of rice and wheat distributed

6700 kgs pulses distributed

500 water purifiers distributed 18

400 blankets distributed

2500 sanitary pad kits distributed

Facilitating Better Hygiene in Slums While we were successful in distributing food supplies to over 3300 families in communities, ground surveys and feedback indicated that there was a need for a more holistic intervention. Families in low-income areas did not have access to clean drinking water and hygiene equipment. To help address this problem, we distributed 500 water purifiers and hygiene kits which included thermometers, sanitary pads and masks. Moreover, we have distributed 2500 packs of sanitary pads throughout the year and have received an overwhelming response from young girls and women in the communities. We also included hand sanitizers in our ration packets as there are major challenges with respect to running water in communities.

COVID RELIEF

RUPA's SERVICE

" During these difficult times, I have had the opportunity to serve people. I'm proud to be a frontline worker and help my city during the COVID-19 pandemic "

2020 was a turbulent year for everyone, especially those living in low-income communities. However, amidst the struggle and suffering, we also got to learn of some truly inspiring stories. Rupa, a previous beneficiary in our programme has been serving as a home guard, providing security and helping manage the law and order situation in quarantine centres and local trains. With COVID at its peak and quarantine centres at full capacity, Rupa and scores of frontline workers have worked day and night to help Mumbai and her people. We want to share Rupa's story to pay tribute to the unsung heroes who have helped fight this pandemic. Rupa is also an accomplished long distance runner, competing in many events and even winning the 10K event at the TATA Mumbai Marathon 2019. In 2021, she hopes to improve her fitness and participate competitively again whilst pursuing her dreams of becoming a police officer. 22

DIVERSITY IN THE COMMUNITY We are all born in a different way, how we look and what we say.

From different countries, around the world, of different genders, boys and girls.

Of many sizes and colours too, the things we like, and things we do.

We like to teach and play too, we even like to go to the zoo. What makes us different is the key, what makes us different is our diversity.

CASE STUDIES AZEEN

12 YEARS

DIPESH

16 YEARS

Azeen (12), a beneficiary of our football programme did not let the pandemic dampen her enthusiasm and determination to learn. She wrote worksheets sent to us by our partners at City Football Group which reflected on various topics based on value education and civics. While Azeen wasn't able to attend school, she took initiative to improve her problem solving skills, using online resources like YouTube to clarify doubts and learn new activities. She converted her free time into creativity, making beautiful craft pieces and writing poems, one of which is featured in this very report! We are proud of how Azeen has proactively dealt with the pandemic and wish her all the best.

Dipesh (16) is a beneficiary of our Enabling Change project which works with children with disabilities. He has been with OSCAR for over 3 years, showing great improvement in academics and sport. His parents thank his coach Govind and the teachers at Sol's Arc for this progress. While the lockdown posed great challenges to Dipesh and his classmates, they have shown great resilience and commitment to continue learning through online classes. OSCAR Foundation started online sessions for our 'Enabling Change' beneficiaries thrice a week which included zumba, meditation and physical fitness sessions. Dipesh actively participated with great enthusiasm and mobilised his classmates and friends (and their parents too!) to attend.

Latif (19) is an OSCAR Young Leader belonging to Dharavi in Mumbai. He has been associated with OSCAR since the last 4 years starting as a beneficiary in our football programme. Over the years, he has shown great progress, contributing to the growth of our programme at Dharavi. After joining OSCAR, Latif is committed about his higher education and even wants to become a teacher in the future. He is a great influence for our kids and constantly motivates them to stay in school and attend their classes. He has even designed fun activities to keep children engaged during the lockdown. Despite personal and financial challenges, Latif continues to support the children of Dharavi and pursue his education.

Varsha (18) is from Cotton Green in Central Mumbai and is one of our new Young Leaders. A former beneficiary of the football programme, Varsha was determined to inspire children and work with her community in Cotton Green. Varsha has regularly attended trainings and workshops over the course of the pandemic and is eagerly waiting to work with children on ground. She credits the programme for improving her time management, leadership and interpersonal skills. During the pandemic, Varsha also initiated distribution of food supplies to at risk families in her area. She is enrolled in the National Cadet Corps, the youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces and hopes to pursue a career in the military.

TESTIMONIALS URMILA

40 YEARS

KOMAL

" What I love about OSCAR is that they encourage boys and girls equally. They tell us that we must educate our girls and give them the opportunity to play. I recently attended the wonderful Women's Day event in Powai and had a great time even scoring 7 goals in the tournament. Beyond that, I got to attend workshops organised by Young Leaders and learnt a lot about menstrual hygiene. I saw my daughter play for the first time and was amazed by how much she has improved. I am determined to educate my daughter and see her succeed. I have told her not to be bogged down by the pressure society places on us. I hope to see her realise all her aspirations and would like to thank OSCAR for supporting our family. "

" No one expected the COVID-19 pandemic to have such a huge impact on life as we know it. As our sessions on ground stopped, we had to shift completely to online platforms to engage with our children. It was a difficult process and there were many learning experiences throughout the year. We spent our time attending a variety of workshops by experts and designed a life skills curriculum with new activities keeping in mind COVID appropriate behaviour. I also conducted a ration distribution drive with beneficiaries from my community in Dharavi and Mahim. I am so proud that I was able to support these families during such difficult times. I also want to show gratitude to OSCAR for ensuring that our jobs are safe and encouraging us to help the communities in need. "

PARTNER TESTIMONIALS

OSCAR has partnered with Cityzens Giving since 2020 on a project that provides educational opportunities to disadvantaged children in Mumbai through the power of football. OSCAR are a valued partner with a professional and hardworking leadership team, dedicated staff and inspirational Young Leaders making a huge difference in their communities. We have a great working relationship and look forward to continuing working together over the long term.

Tom Pitchon - Director, City Football Foundation

Watching OSCAR, as an entity, is like watching a lotus in full bloom. Watching your volunteers at work is like watching honeybees, busy spreading the pollen of kindness. Watching your kids is like watching butterflies in a garden of goodness. It is indeed a divine experience, playing a small part in your wonderful work.

PARTNER TESTIMONIALS

I have loved being a part of the OSCAR journey and truly believe sports can boost and develop the personality of children. Through football, OSCAR empowers young children and teaches them that difficult does not mean impossible! It is amazing how OSCAR uses sports to better the lives and future of these young children.

Tarana Lalwani, Senior Director, InnoVen Capital India

I would like to thank OSCAR Foundation for partnering with us on COVID relief activities. The dedication and commitment of the OSCAR team was truly remarkable. At the height of COVID pandemic, the team members and volunteers risked their lives to serve and support the most vulnerable community members. Ashok Rathod, founder and director of OSCAR Foundation, led from the front and by example. Wishing OSCAR Foundation more power to carry out its impactful work going forward.

Arun Nathan - COO, The Jagtiani Foundation 30

OSCAR INTERNATIONAL

The OSCAR International team, volunteers and supporters have been integral to the success of OSCAR's food aid and programme delivery during the pandemic. Our 'Cityzens Giving for Recovery’ campaign provided a valuable platform for the emergency ‘call to action’. A determined fundraising drive by the UK’s Lucinda Sowerbutts, inspired supporters around the world to help provide emergency

food aid. It is encouraging and reassuring for our communities to know so many people around the world want to help. Media celebrities, the Thomas Brothers and the global Yoga community made a significant and positive impact on the lives of the most vulnerable. The ‘High Five 4 OSCAR’ and ‘Yoga 4 OSCAR’ campaign engaged supporters of all ages in energetic fundraising activities. Schools across 31

OSCAR INTERNATIONAL

the UK continued to facilitate the opening and equipping of vital Digital Learning Centres with the benefit of Man City FC’s match funding campaign. Malvern College co-sponsored the centre in Chembur. The Child Sponsorship programme continues to grow and is key to funding the ongoing programmes, whilst enabling OSCAR to plan for the future. OSCAR UK’s focus for 2021/22 is to expand this programme. We also reviewed the Monitoring and Evaluation metrics, set up

UpShot and conducted a full review of the Safeguarding and Code of Practice. While the UK team and volunteers have been unable to visit India, the dedication and commitment continues with energy and enthusiasm. The distress of parents unable to provide food for their children motivated so many donors around the world to help. We are grateful to those who responded to our emergency appeal and who continue their steadfast support for the brighter days ahead. 32
