ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23

F O R E W O R D

It gives us immense pleasure to present the Annual Report of OSCAR Foundation for the year 2022-2023. This year has been a remarkable journey for us as we continue to navigate the aftermath of the pandemic and strive towards a full recovery. We are proud to share our progress, accomplishments, and the impact we have made in the lives of countless individuals

We prioritised expanding our reach and strengthening our programmes this year. We are delighted to share that we have welcomed 4,333 participants across various locations to our football and life skills education programme. This achievement was made possible through our expansion efforts in Rajasthan and the Union territories of Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Another important highlight was the induction of talented girl Young Leaders across our locations. These inspiring individuals are empowered to create positive change in their communities, and we are privileged to support them on their journey We are excited about our growing presence in four states and look forward to future expansions.

In addition to expansion, we have paid special attention to the quality and effectiveness of our programme. To ensure sustainable impact, we are implementing the life skills assessment scale, which enables us to measure the effectiveness of our programmes. We are also pleased to announce the integration of gender life skills in all our sessions, creating an inclusive and empowering environment for all participants

As the world returned to normalcy after over 2 years of isolation, we enthusiastically participated in community events, including the Annual Football Day and The TATA Mumbai Marathon. These events celebrated sportsmanship, healthy competition and community engagement, reflecting our dedication to promoting physical well-being and fostering a sense of unity.

This year, we also achieved a milestone by organising our first international tour of the USA. Our Young Leaders and children visited the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, immersing themselves in new cultures and gaining valuable experiences. This exposure enriched their lives, fostering personal growth. Looking ahead, we are excited to announce tours to the United Kingdom and Sweden in 2023.

We have made organisational advancements by adding new advisors and appointing two board members with valuable expertise. Also, the renewal of our FCRA demonstrates our strong compliance practices, highlighting our commitment to transparency and accountability. For the future, we aim to use technology and AI to improve our operations, focusing on automation in HR management, participant data, and funder reporting. This will optimise resource allocation and maximise our impact. We sincerely thank our funders, partners, supporters, volunteers, parents, staff, participants, and Young Leaders for their unwavering support and belief in our mission. Your invaluable contributions have driven us forward and empowered us to create transformative change.

Our path to a sustainable future

The World Health Organisation (WHO) identifies physical inactivity as a major risk for global mortality. Through our football and life skills sessions, we provide an opportunity for children to remain active and healthy.

OSCAR runs Community Learning Centers (CLCs) in six locations, aiming to promote digital literacy and enhance future employment prospects. They provide tablets with adaptive learning software to bridge educational gaps, while also conducting life skills sessions to foster socio-emotional learning among participants.

We prioritise gender equity in all our programmes, striving for gender equality. Our 'Kick Like a Girl' initiative fosters cultural change among participants, guardians, and staff to achieve these goals. Starting in 2023, we will provide gender life skills sessions to promote inclusive and empathetic attitudes among our participants.

32% of our staff are OSCAR programme alumni. We provide capacity building opportunities, including digital courses and coaching certifications, enabling individuals with limited resources to thrive professionally.

OSCAR programmes promote inclusivity, embracing children irrespective of their gender, religion, caste or race. We foster harmony and progressive thinking within our organisation, emphasising these values during interactions with participants.

5

Inclusivity

OSCAR Foundation is dedicated to the principle of inclusion. Our commitment to equity and empowerment is deeply woven into our programmes, ensuring that every initiative reflects our pledge to stand alongside and uplift those who have been underserved.

Keeping inclusivity at the core of our programme, we will deliver gender life skills sessions across locations to establish gender equitable attitudes and further inculcate inclusiveness and empathy among our participants. OSCAR Foundation will also scale 'Enabling Change', a project catering to children with disabilities

6

Football & Education

STORIES OF CHANGE

OMKAR

Omkar has been associated with OSCAR Foundation for the last seven years and has been a member of our I-League team for the past three years. Prior to joining OSCAR, he did not have access to opportunities as a football player. However, since joining, Omkar has had new experiences, met new people and improved his football skills and technique.

Through the guidance of OSCAR Foundation, Omkar has been able to pursue his passion for football and has achieved success. He was selected for the OSCAR U14 UK tour in 2017 and quickly made an impression on everyone around him. Since then, he has been selected for the Mumbai City FC U18 Squad and has played in various tournaments such as the 2nd Division I League and the U21 Reliance Development League. He was also recently awarded the best player at the Colaba Super League. Omkar’s story is a testament to the positive impact that OSCAR has on the lives of children.

VAISHALI

14-year-old Vaishali from Karnataka, joined OSCAR's Football and Life Skills education programme three years ago. It ignited her passion for football and developed her confidence, communication, and leadership abilities. The programme's welcoming environment and focus on life skills encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone, make confident decisions, and challenge societal norms

As Vaishali actively participated in the programme, her confidence soared. Playing with and against boys helped her grasp the significance of equality OSCAR provided Vaishali a platform to advocate for change. Recognising the impact of her experiences, she shared her newfound knowledge with other girls, becoming an advocate for empowering and instilling confidence in them to stand up for their rights. Actively mobilising girls for OSCAR programmes, Vaishali aims to offer them the same transformative opportunities.

Vaishali represented OSCAR at a girl leadership summit in Goa, where her dedication and leadership were acknowledged, motivating her to pursue her aspirations and promote gender equality.

Vaishali has been selected for the OSCAR UK Tour 2023. It will be her first time travelling abroad, a significant achievement for her and everyone in her village.

14

Support Projects

The Young Leader Project is a key ‘football for development’ initiative that is the foundation for the sustainability of our organisation. Youth from lowincome communities including previous OSCAR participants are identified and trained to work with children from underprivileged communities. Since 2010, 800 young leaders have been trained under this initiative across India.

Our Community Learning Centres (CLCs) promote digital literacy and provide access to computers for children living in low-income communities. OSCAR is committed to bridging the digital divide by offering a number of courses across age groups including a certification by the National Institute for Information Technology (NIIT). Our centres also provide tablets loaded with adaptive self learning softwares to help children address academic learning gaps.

SAFE SPACES FOR ALL

200 tablets with self-paced learning software were provided to children at our centres to aid their academic progress

Several enjoyable learning activities, including arts and crafts, were organised to engage children during their summer break Our centres enrolled more female participants than male participants for the first time

Inspired by their children's progress, 9 parents of our participants joined computer classes

I firmly believe that learning knows no age limits. At the age of 49, I decided to enrol in OSCAR's computer learning course, driven by my genuine interest in mastering computer operations for various day-to-day purposes. My goal is to continue progressing through other courses offered by OSCAR and ultimately utilise the internet and computers confidently for tasks like online shopping and banking.

Within Chembur resides Sumithra, a 15-year-old girl living with her mother, who works as a gardener, and her younger brother As a 9th-grade student, she possesses a passion for science and mathematics. However, her school lacks the necessary digital infrastructure required in today's technologicallydriven world In bridging this gap, OSCAR Foundation has played a vital role.

Sumithra frequents OSCAR Foundation's Community Learning Centre in Chembur, where she acquires various computer skills. Exploring the intricacies of Microsoft Excel has proved immensely beneficial to her mathematical comprehension, particularly in dealing with percentages. Additionally, she enjoys working with applications such as MS Word, PowerPoint, and Paint. Having already completed OSCAR courses such as ‘Fun with Computers’ and ‘Basics with Computers’, Sumithra has demonstrated exceptional aptitude by excelling in the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) examination.

Driven by her aspiration to become a doctor, Sumithra has used the facilities at the centre to conduct research about her career and locate the relevant information and resources she needs for the same. Sumithra has gained improved confidence to thrive in a society that is increasingly reliant on technology and digital skills As technology becomes an integral part of our lives, she feels well-prepared to navigate the challenges and opportunities it presents

24

The Football Excellence Project aims to give talented young football players in Mumbai an opportunity to compete in All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) youth leagues. Any talented child from our programme is welcome to attend trials with the best players selected to attend academy level training and represent our teams in junior professional leagues in U-13, U-15 and U-17 categories.

Football Excellence

Parvez has been with OSCAR Foundation for the last seven years, and his journey has been nothing short of remarkable. At the age of 10, he discovered his passion for football and was soon selected for OSCAR's football excellence project. Under the guidance of OSCAR's coaches, Parvez not only excelled on the field, playing in the youth I-league for 5 years but also completed his studies.

Coming from a challenging background, Parvez faced numerous difficulties in his life, including living in an unsafe area where his house had tragically burnt down twice and thefts were all too common. However, instead of succumbing to the hardships around him, Parvez found solace, hope, and direction through sports, especially football. It became his escape from the anti-social elements in his neighborhood, and with the support of his peers and family, he was able to pursue his goal of becoming a professional footballer.

Through OSCAR's guidance, Parvez developed strong leadership qualities, built self-respect, and learned to be goal-oriented His hard work and determination bore fruit when he was selected for the U-18 team at Mumbai City FC, a dream come true for Parvez and a reward for his unwavering focus. Parvez has inadvertently moulded himself into a leader on and off the field, inspiring children in his community and youth in our programmes to strive for better life opportunities.

Highlights of the Year

In December 2022, OSCAR Foundation achieved a milestone by expanding its football and life skills education programme to Rajasthan. 29 Young Leaders from Jhunjhunu district were trained to use football for social change. Our surveys in the area indicated a lack of structured play, life skills, and career awareness, along with the absence of women from public life. These findings prompted OSCAR to launch its flagship programme in a brand new location.

In March 2023, OSCAR embarked on an exciting journey by launching its programme in Daman. Empowering 30 community youth as Young Leaders, they mobilised 126 children who now regularly attend our sessions. We started our project in Daman after observing high drop out rates among children who were left unsupervised when their parents went to work. Also, many children did not have aspirations due to financial constraints, lack of awareness and education.

31

Umesh, from our programme, along with Poonam and Govind from our team, were invited for an unforgettable trip to the World Cup in Qatar with founder Ashok

Rathod. They met football legend Xavi Hernandez and enjoyed a matchday experience.

The UN's Football for the Goals initiative welcomed OSCAR Foundation as one of its first Indian members. We are proud to contribute to lasting community development in pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Komal and Selva received a special invitation from Manchester City for the Etihad Airways Youth Leadership Experience in Abu Dhabi. The training aimed at nurturing community coaches to create a more significant impact through football.

32

OSCAR Foundation held its Annual Football Day in January, bringing together 2000 children from different regions in Mumbai for a jumbo-sized football tournament. The event, fittingly held on Republic Day, celebrated the success of our programme while engaging with various stakeholders. In addition to the tournament, children were also able to participate in games and activities for prizes while parents had the opportunity to play football games and attend a child safeguarding workshop. A miniature gallery off the pitch showcased OSCAR's past milestones. The event was held after a pause of 3 years due to the global pandemic. The festival showcased a sense of unity and camaraderie among all members of OSCAR's growing family.

On International Women's Day, OSCAR Foundation organised events for mothers at three locations: Mehara Jatuwas, Rajasthan; Mumbai, Maharashtra; and Yadgir, Karnataka. The theme this year was DigitALL - Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality. We conducted technology upskilling sessions specifically for mothers to address the challenges they faced in using mobile devices and applications. Participants were trained in operating mobile devices, using the camera, calculator, alarm, internet, and voice commands, encouraging them to embrace technology for enhancing their daily lives. The response was overwhelming, with 780 mothers and 265 girls from our programmes attending the celebrations across all locations.

We organised enjoyable football activities and games on the ground, including tug of war, lemon and spoon race, musical chairs, zumba, and football. Participants, many of whom hadn't engaged in such activities for decades, had a delightful experience. The mothers' enthusiasm showcased their love for sports, fostering camaraderie, enjoyment, and community bonds. It provided a platform for learning, technological empowerment, and sports.

2022-23 was a very productive year for the UK team with many successful initiatives and events. The team conducted a school assembly tour, inspiring over 8,000 pupils in 12 schools to support and fundraise for the OSCAR UK Tour 2023.

A notable highlight was the fundraising lunch, attended by OSCAR Royal Patron, HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh GCVO, at the prestigious Reform Club in London. The event brought together 30 distinguished guests to celebrate our endeavours and gain insights from HRH's visit to the Ambedkar Nagar community.

OSCAR International's Lucinda and her friends successfully summitted Mount Kilimanjaro propelling our fundraising efforts and helping provide bicycles for 100 children in rural Karnataka, enabling easier access to education.

Dr. Chris Stevens, Headmaster of Bradfield College, led by example, running the Venice Marathon to showcase a healthier lifestyle and impactful philanthropy. His efforts inspired volunteers to join OSCAR’s mission.

OSCAR International is delighted to welcome the Benefact Group as a valued supporter. Their generous donation to the UK tour boosted fundraising significantly. Ashok and Lucinda presented at Benefact's headquarters, strengthening the partnership.

In early 2023, the OSCAR team welcomed the founders of the Asha Project in Mumbai, Kuldip and Jacqueline Dhillon who met with children in Mumbai. Tragically, we mourned the loss of Kuldip a week later, a compassionate benefactor whose memory will forever inspire our work.

In celebration of the 6th year of the Child Sponsorship initiative, OSCAR takes immense pride in its growth and success. Witnessing participants graduate at 18 and observing their unwavering commitment to education and community upliftment reaffirms the vital role of Child Sponsorship in sustaining OSCAR’s mission. The team also organised a celebration gathering over 80 participants from international tours. Their stories of inspiration and motivation further underscored the transformative power of OSCAR initiatives.

Guided by the OSCAR International Trustee Board, led by Alice Lewthwaite, OSCAR remains proactive in updating governance, enhancing safeguarding measures, and refining our Monitoring and Evaluation metrics. The visit of four trustees to Mumbai further strengthened the UK team’s commitment to effective management and accountability.

OSCAR would like to thank its supporters, patrons and dedicated team members who have made these accomplishments possible. OSCAR International looks forward to 2024 energised by the prospect of continued growth and positive change in the lives of thousands of children across India.
