The NEW iPhone 4G - Coming JULY 2010 What’s new • Front-facing video chat camera • Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS) • Camera flash • Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad) • Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS. • What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack • Split buttons for volume • Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic What’s changed • The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound • An aluminum border going completely around the outside • Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution) • Everything is more squared off • 3 grams heavier • 16% Larger battery

Get the Perfect Tan

Make Them Go Nuts! By: Donia Beshir

Summer brings many happy thoughts to mind and for nzgirls one of those will definitely be the idea of a golden hue. But as we know a real tan is not a good thing. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and a tan is effectively damage, which can lead to wrinkles and skin cancer. Many of us may be hesitant to try self-tanning products, aware of the horror stories or remembering the orange marks we managed to get everywhere on our first try. But with a few handy hints and a good quality product your tan will be more beautiful, even and natural looking than if you had baked yourself in the sun all day. Your first step is to exfoliate from head to toe The best way to exfoliate evenly is to start at the feet using an exfoliating scrub or a body brush and work in an upwards circular motion. Exfoliating will allow you to remove the dead, dry skin which absorbs fake tan faster leading to dark patches - so this step is essential if you want an even result. If you need to shave do so before exfoliating, otherwise your skin may become irritated. After a rinse and a pat dry apply a light layer of moisturiser to the skin I like Johnson’s Naturally Soft Body Lotion with oat milk and honey because it is intensely moisturising but doesn’t make the skin greasy. The moisturiser will help your fake tan go on in an even fashion, avoiding those nasty streaks that give it away. Rub it in thoroughly and pay special attention to areas like your knees, wrists,

elbows and ankles. If you rub a little more moisturiser into these spots it will help prevent them appearing darker when your tan is complete. With your freshly cleaned and moisturised skin you’re ready to actually apply your tanning product As a general rule a gel, spray or foam product will dry faster which is perfect if you need to be somewhere in a hurry. A cream will take a little longer to dry, which means you have more time to play with the product if it’s your first time. Either way, you want to pick a product with a natural looking hue that is dermatologically tested. I like Piz Buin products because they come in either max or mild, are moisturising and have a mild pleasant smell. They also fade gradually in a natural way over five days which means you avoid being tanned one day and pale the next! When applying your tanning product it’s a good idea to go to a well lit area, preferably somewhere with natural light so you can really see how even your tan is going on. I like to wait until my moisturiser is completely absorbed, as moisture on the skin may cause the product to be uneven. When your skin is nice and dry put on a pair of disposable gloves (which are available at most chemists) and start applying your product. Apply the tan the same way you exfoliated, working from the feet upwards in small circular motions using a gentle hand. Check you’re getting every area of skin and that there is no unevenness. Remember to be extra light and blend very evenly over the problem areas such as knees, wrists, ankles and inner arms.

Tanning your face When tanning your face you should line the hairline and eyebrows with a little bit of Vaseline before you start. If you are worried about how dark your product will be, try mixing a little moisturiser into it or applying a very thin layer. Remember, if it’s not dark enough you can always go back and re-apply. For the backs of the hands use a piece of cotton wool or a cotton pad and blend evenly. Now wait for the product to dry Whilst drying it’s best to avoid sitting or lying down, but the great thing about Piz Buin products is that they dry quickly and the tan begins to develop in just thirty minutes so you can see the results. If you somehow managed to make a couple of mistakes or have a little patch of extra dark tan, you can remove some of the excess by using lemon juice or Dettol. Simply apply using a cotton ball and rub away as much of the excess as you can. Maintaining your tan Your tan can be maintained by avoiding AHA and BHA based creams and lotions. Instead for summer care opt for a lush skin cream and a layer of sun block to keep your skin healthy and your tan intact. By using these few simple steps and a great product like Piz Buin you will be left with a beautiful even tan which will be the envy of every sun worshiper out there. And let’s face it, in the summer months a tan really does make you feel sexier and healthier and gets you into the mood of summer.

Big Brother By: Hajar Al Taweel

is Watching You New devices are introduced to the market every day, from cell phones, to cameras, to TVs... The list goes on and on. Some buy these for personal use; others buy them for corporate usage. A friend of mine works at a company where all the staffs’ screens are monitored and there are cameras in every room of the company. Her manager placed these cameras for “security reasons” after an unfortunate incident happened. I am not against placing cameras for security reasons, but why should they be place in every room? Although the manager claimed he would not view the recordings unless something happens, with a few slips of tongs from his side, they realized that he does open them to view what they are doing. It’s like Big brother is watching your every move. Not only screen monitoring, but also how they carry themselves while working. Another friend told me that along

with the cameras installed in every room, at her company there are also microphones attached to these so that the managers could hear what they say. Of course, they claim to be doing that to protect the company. Which, for me is a lame excuse for people who are “control freaks”. What I don’t understand is how they cannot possibly see that by doing this they jeopardize the trust that they should be building with their staff. For instance, they monitor screens so that people don’t log in on to their personal accounts or social media networks in “company’s time”. But employees do need small 5 minutes break every once and a while to charge up. There are other ways to monitor performance by following up whether they are doing their work or not instead of having to control their every move. But by monitoring, you only decrease the trust; the employee would then only do what he is told just because he has to and not because he wants

to. So you also kill his or her motivation and passion to work. I mean seriously, trust between an employee and his or her supervisor is the most important motive that would drive the employee to perform better. But when you feel that your every move is being watched, you don’t feel that motivated to work. Technology should be used to increase that trust, not to demolish it. First off, the employees would feel more at ease when they know no one is watching; they would be able to connect and correspond with fellow employees and feel “at home”. They would also feel that their supervisor trust them enough to know that they are performing well. So they would not only do what they are told, but will most likely exceed expectations, because they know they are being trusted. Technology should be used in smart ways to bring people closer together.

She can’t vacuum, she can’t cook but she can do almost anything else, if you know what I mean.

Roxxxy the Sexy Robot Girlfriend

According to Roxxxy’s inventor, scientist Douglas Hines, formerly of Bell Labs, “She’s a companion. She has a personality. She hears you. She listens to you. She speaks. She feels your touch. She goes to sleep. We are trying to replicate the personality of a person,” adding that “Sex only goes so far, then you want to be able to talk to the person.” A New Jersey company says it has developed “the world’s first sex robot,” a life-size rubber doll that’s designed to engage the owner with conversation rather than lifelike movement. At a demonstration at the Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas on Saturday, the dark-haired, negligee-clad robot said “I love holding hands with you” when it sensed that its creator touched its hand. Another action, this one unprintable, elicited a different vocal response from Roxxxy the robot. The level of sophistication demonstrated was not beyond that of a child’s talking toy, but Roxxxy has a lot more brains than that – there’s a laptop connected to cables coming out of its back. It has touch sensors at strategic locations and can sense when it’s being moved. But

it can’t move on its own, not even to turn its head or move its lips. The sound comes out of an internal loudspeaker. Douglas Hines, founder of Lincoln Park, N.J.-based True Companion LLC, said Roxxxy can carry on simple conversations. The real aim, he said, is to make the doll someone the owner can talk to and relate to. “Sex only goes so far – then you want to be able to talk to the person,” Hines said. The end result was Roxxxy. Says Hines, “She can’t vacuum, she can’t cook but she can do almost anything else, if you know what I mean.” The ultimate female robot has just hit the scenes. The Roxxxy robot - (not Roxxy robot or Roxy robot because, you see, “Roxxxy” is triple-X) - is one sexy robot girl. In fact, Roxxxy is a sex robot - which means that as girl robots go she is, well, the ultimate fantasy robot. And, indeed, for some the ultimate fantasy girlfriend. Not only does Roxxxy talk sports, respond to touch, and come with three … er … serviceable ports. The phrases that were demonstrated were prerecorded, but the

robot will also be able to synthesize phrases out of prerecorded words and sounds, Hines said. The laptop will receive updates over the Internet to expand the robot’s capabilities and vocabulary. Since Hines is a soccer fan, it can already discuss Manchester United, he said. It snores, too. Owners will also be able to select different personalities for Roxxxy, from “Wild Wendy” to “Frigid Farrah,” Hines said. He’s charging somewhere from $7,000 to $9,000 (according to options, which include hair and skin color, and breast size), Roxxxy is available in both the U.S. and Europe, with plans to take her global. This is including the laptop, and expects to start shipping in a few months. Roxxxy also comes with an Internet connection, with which she can not only receive updates, but through which she can send email to you. While Hines and Co. developed their first sex robot back in 1993, it was, by accounts, “catatonic”, particularly compared to the new Roxxxy. The inspiration for the new, improved sex robot came, says Hines, believe it or not, from 9/11. Hines lost a close friend in the attacks, and started thinking of ways to capture and recreate a person’s personality in a robot’s body. The broader goal of the company is still to take artificial personalities into the mainstream, beyond sex toys, Hines said. “The sex robot thing is marketing – it’s really about making a companion,” he said. In a 2007 book, “Love and Sex with Robots,” British chess player and artificial intelligence expert David Levy argues that robots will become significant sexual partners for humans, answering needs that other people are unable or unwilling to satisfy.

Relationships

ruined by technology By: Sarah El Etribi

It has become challenging to maintain a healthy, stable relationship with the storming devices and electronic materials that have a main purpose to make life somewhat easier. These new inventions have conquered our world in the past decade. Ironically, many people, especially couples have communication problems because of new technological hits. I presume most of you, if not all, have heard about the now-so-popular BlackBerry mobile phone. One of the main attractive features about this device is the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) which enables you to chat with your friends, who own a BlackBerry, for free. This should be very tempting for couples but it’s actually turning into a negative element in the phone. Recently I’ve heard about a handful of unsuccessful relationships mainly caused by the BBM. Girls just love to chat on the phone, and apparently free messaging isn’t enough for them, they always want to talk. Boys, on the other hand, are the silent type and a 5 minute conversation daily is more than sufficient. That’s a well known and agreed upon fact. Obviously, the new BBM technology is somehow more appealing to the boys who aren’t much into chattering and now the causes of relationship tension is coming to surface. Boys thought that the BBM will solve the problem that is nearly occupying their women’s minds. On the contrary, it only made it worse and the problems are increasing. Lately, I heard from one of my

friends that her relationship ended unsuccessfully because her boyfriend used to BBM her all day rather than call. In fact, they would go on for days without voice calls, and only send messages to each other. For a girl, this would seem like a disaster; not talking to her boyfriend/partner for days and only texting each other but obviously, boys don’t see a problem in not talking on the phone too much. BBM is not only ruining love relationships, but friendships are also affected negatively on the way. Because it’s a new hit, and more people are buying the phone everyday, you could be sitting with a group of 5-10 friends, and you’d find most of them staring at their phone screens and their fingers are flying over the keys. Of course people sitting in this group who don’t own a BlackBerry would naturally feel left out. It’s as if they don’t qualify enough to be with the rest of the group. Another almost inevitable problem about BBM is the constant gossiping, especially amongst girls; it seems fun at the beginning, but it sure does get ugly if you get caught! This would immediately cause clashes between friends and all the drama that follows, especially that there are girls included. It’s certain and agreed upon that girls are gossip queens and nothing stops them from doing that. The funny thing about BBM is that you can be sitting with a bunch of people, having a good time, and what do you know? They’re gossiping about you on their phones! The only way you could find out is if you ask if

you can borrow their phone to make a phone call or send a text and just take a peek at their BBM conversations – you’ll be amazed; whether it’s gossip about YOU or others who are ironically so-called ‘friends’. Unfortunately, BlackBerry isn’t the only problem. Facebook is also becoming unpopular to most girls. Their boyfriends would rather send them messages and write on their walls than call them for a little chat. This isn’t Facebook’s only problem. Some married men and women are now meeting new people (usually from the opposite gender) online and their relationships together evolve and they become more than friends. This obviously causes endless marital problems as one partner is cheating on the other. Skype is another useful technology (if only it’s being used the way it should!). Couples living in different countries, whether temporarily or not, use Skype as an effective communication device. But some people use it to meet new ‘friends’ online; this also causes cheating and marital or relationship tension and stress. I came to realize that many people can relate to this now common problem as more technological devices are invading our lives on a daily basis. Some families are being separated because of Facebook or Skype, couples are tearing apart because one partner chooses BBM rather than voice calls as regular communication. It’s more of a debate now; whether technology is useful or not. If only it’s used they way it should!

feature You are one of the most popular football players loved by everyone, not only Zamalek’s fans, Why is that? Because Egyptian people love professional players. Actually I became famous before I joined Zamalek, I was in Europe and after that I was in the National team for 5 years. After that, I was loved by Zamalek’s fans but thank God Ahly’s fans loved me. What is the difference between Hazem the player and Hazem the manager? Hazem the player was only responsible about himself by doing a great job, being a hard worker and playing his best even if they lost the match. But now it’s different I am responsible for a lot of people, a team, I can do a great job but if we lose, I will take part of the responsability.

Hazem Emam a star of Egyptian football By: Riham Fouad

You were the first player in Zamalek’s Club who suggested the name of Hossam Hassan to be the trainer. Why make that suggestion? And why Hossam Hassan in particular? I suggested Hossam Hassan by personal experience and I think I am experienced enough in football. When I said the name of Hossam it was weird for the other members but I was pushing his name because even if his results with Etisalat weren’t good, I felt that he can do a lot in Zamalek, first of all he has charisma, he knows how to treat a player and he is loved by everyone. Hossam is an important member in our team especially that Zamalek had a lot of problems with fans and players in the beginning of the year. What about the renewal Hossam Hassan’s contract? I don’t know why these days the media talk negatively about this issue. But what I say is that we already renewed the contract of Hossam without any problem. We are discussing with him the new players and all the related details. So Hossam is with us.

Last year Zamalek was always down and now thank God things are looking better. Where was the drop in your opinion? In the coach, with all my respect to our ex coaches. The players are the same, the management is the same but the coach is new. Hossam has the capacity and the talent to communicate with his players and he knows how to come out with the best from everyone. Why didn’t you suggest yourself to be the coach ? Because I was tired from the pressure. When I was a player I lived with a lot of pressure and I decided to relax a little bit. For sure there is pressure in the management but not like the pressure of the coach. The coach has a lot of everyday problems with the players, fans, etc... and after every match he faces pressure with people, media, players and fans. There are a lot of talented players in the new generation. Do you think they can achieve their dream of becoming professional football players? Like we saw in the Head &Shoulders’s dribbling competition which aimed at offering the Egyptian youth a chance to reach fame and stardom. The participants exceeded 110 young ambitious males who showed off their exceptional dribbling skills there are a lot of talented people. I talked with 90% of these participants and they are already part of a club or have a personal coach and they nourish their talent. They have a good chance because now they have many options and opportunities and also coaches are professional with an academic background not only by experience, there are a lot places which encourage football, like clubs, academies, and so on. I think this generation has a big chance, bigger than what we had.

What do you think about the Champions League? The Champions League… (with a big Smile) Good but I was surprised in the finals. I think Inter Milan and Bayern Munich didn’t deserve it. They are good but not the best. For sure they played well and technically they are good but not great, they are lucky and in football the best don’t always win every time, there is always a bit of luck . I think Manchester and Barcelona were stronger and they deserve more. What is the difference between Egyptian football and European football? I think we are growing up step by step; for example the last match of Ahly and Zamalek was great. But in general they are different, not only in football but in everything, our lifestyle, transportation, system even fans are different. Fans in Europe go encourage the team till the end, they are loyal even if they didn’t win. Here in Egypt is the opposite, if the team didn’t win the fans start to swear at the players and cause damages. Egypt is lacking a system unfortunately. But I think football is the only thing which we can be compared with, because we are good. Egypt in the World Cup 2010… What would you expect? Egypt can do a lot, for sure better than World Cup 1990. We had the possibility to prove that now we are stronger than before, we had the possibility to play good matches with USA and Slovenia.

Thanks Hazem Emam for this beautiful interview. Special Thanks to MS&L PR and Head&Shoulders’s

Building

The body you want

By: Mena Ghali

So... summer time... damn! Mmm... yes I know you’ve been thinking about it too. Well, here let’s get to the point. You want to lose those extra pounds of fat around your waist and some from err your butt too for that new swimsuit. This is what we need to do for the next few weeks. Now we talked about your food and eating habits before. WE need to keep that focused. We’re eating every 3 hours max. We’re having complex carbs, veggies, fruits, proteins, no sat. Fats, no sugar. Now, we’ll be cutting on the carbs too! Yes, forget about the energy, you need to get in shape. We’re limiting our carb intake to 1 or maximum 2 portions a day one and half hour before our workout. Workout: we’re doing this in the early mornings (yes, you will wake up before work and hit the gym or track) This ensures that your metabolism stays high all day long, and you burn more when working out in the morning rather that doing that after you’re already wasted and tired of a whole day’s work. Cardio: 15 to 30 minutes depending on time available and your fitness level. We will do the following: hit 2 minutes of slow pace, you’re slightly jogging, you are breathing a bit heavy but can still talk. 1 minute of slower pace (yes slow down for 1 minute, correct), and then sprint for 2 minutes (I mean run for your life). Repeat cycle. After you’re done with your cardio. Get going with these exercises: Squats (20 reps x 3 sets) – Gym: use a weight that is almost impossible for you to complete 33 to 35

reps with and complete your 30 reps with that. Hack Squats (20 reps x 3 sets) – see above regarding weight to use. Lunges (15 reps x 4 sets) – use body weight, if its too easy for you see above. Leg raises (15 reps x 3 sets) Crunches (20 reps x 3 sets) a crunch is not moving your entire upper body towards your lower. You only need to lift the upper 25% of your upper body so that you are looking straight infront of you and not downwards. Keep your neck straight at all times. Stay away from junk food and the like at all costs. If you don’t have a choice of healthy food – go for grilled meat or chicken, remove mayonnaise and ketchup keep the veggies. No hamburgers or hotdogs – lean meat. No fried foods and that includes french fries too. Resort to nuts (almonds and cashews) for a mid day snack. Here’s a list of foods and how often you should eat those (yes, here’s a list that you’ve been dying to find) Eat Often Apples Asparagus Avocados Bananas Brown Rice Canola oil Citrus fruits and juice Corn Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts Eggplant Flaxseed Fruit, dried Fruit juices, no sugar added

Garlic Lentils Melons Mushrooms Nut butters, such as almond and cashew Onions Pasta, whole-wheat, with tomato sauce and/or vegetables Peaches Peas Peppers Pita, whole-wheat Popcorn, fat-free Potatoes, baked, sweet or white Prunes Pumpkin seeds Ricotta cheese, part-skim Salsa Shellfish and bivalves, steamed or baked Soup, broth-based Sunflower seeds Tea Tofu Tomatoes Vegetable juice Wine (1 to 2 glasses a day)

Croissants Danish Dips, creamy Doughnuts Fish sticks, frozen French fries Fruit juices, sugar added Hot dogs Jellies Malts Margarine Nachos, restaurant Non-dairy creamer Packaged desserts Pancakes, made with white flour Pasta with creamy sauce Pie Pizza Popcorn, buttered Popsicles Refried beans Salad dressing, creamy Scones Seafood, fried Soft drinks Toaster pastries Vegetables, fried Waffles, made with white flour Whipped cream

Eat Rarely Bagels Beer, regular Breads, made with white flour Brownies Burgers, fast food Burritos, frozen Cake Candy Cereals, sugary Chicken, fried Chicken wings Chips Cinnamon rolls Coffee, high-sugar Cookies

beauty Hot temperatures and on-the-go kids can make it tough to stay stylish in summer. That›s why you›ll love these ten fast, mom-focused beauty and hair tips, which make looking good a breeze! Go ahead, customize them to enhance your personal assets and natural beauty. Then sit back and enjoy a beautiful summer. 1. Try a slick ponytail to accentuate your facial features. A deepside part looks fresh and modern (and is easy to do when the kids are tugging at your arm!). To prevent flyaways, spritz with hairspray. Don›t forget an easy-to-blend foundation with SPF to even out your skin tone and keep you looking polished. 2. Get a glow on by exfoliating. Keep a washcloth or buff pad atthe-ready for everyday use. If you don›t have an exfoliant, make your own by moistening ½ cup of sugar with olive or sunflower oil. Use small circles to slough away dead cells and reveal new layers of skin. Or, try a mask of four to six aspirin crushed into a paste with water. Let dry, rinse and reveal the new you! 3. Beat the heat with a French braid that keeps your hair off your neck. Make the braid, leaving your bangs free. For a fun playground-

to-party look, pull out small to medium chunky pieces from the braid and spray them with gel or hairspray and scrunch. Sweep bangs to the side and slip on a thin headband or tie on a piece of ribbon. 4. Protect your skin with a sunscreen with minimum 15 SPF. If you burn using SPF 15, go higher. Look for a UVA and UVB blocking ingredient such as Zinc oxide, Titanium dioxide, Parsol 1789 or Helioplex. Apply a shot-glass worth of sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going out, being sure to cover your chest, hands and ears. Don›t forget a lip balm with SPF, too! 5. The messy bun that ruled the fashion runways this season is perfect for on-the-go moms! To get the look, apply a shine serum to toweldried hair. Work it through to enhance natural texture. Next, use your fingers to rake hair back at mid-height or at

the nape of the neck. Twist into a knot and secure with bobby pins. Don›t worry about making it too neat – random ends sticking out are what make this style look relaxed. 6. Stay on-trend with pink lipstick. Pick a shade that complements your skin tone. Lighter pinks work on women with pink or cool undertones, and warmer pinks look best on skin with yellow undertones. A creamy lipstick formula will last longer than gloss. 7. For a mom manicure on the fly, remove chipped polish and moisturize your hands, rubbing olive oil on your cuticles before pushing them back. File your nails short and practical. Then whip on a light polish that won›t show chips as much as a dark shade. 8. Try this trendy, mom-friendly twist on a basic bun: Make two side-by-side ponytails at the back

of your head. Then wrap each tail around the other›s base (hiding the elastics) to create a figure-eight bun. Secure to your head with hairpins and a few spritzes of hairspray. 9. Before you polish your toenails, pamper yourself with an Epson-salt and scented oil foot soak for 10 minutes. (Read a magazine while you wait!) Then remove dry skin from legs and feet with a homemade mixture of olive oil and kosher salt or raw sugar. Rub in an upward motion for two to three minutes, then rinse, moisturize and polish! 10. For natural-looking waves, massage volumizing mousse through freshly washed hair. Weave locks into a thick braid and allow hair to dry. When dried, gently finger comb to loosen into waves. If you have to time to blow dry, apply gel and then slowly blow dry while scrunching hair.

Stretch marks have often been a reason for us to be self-conscious. Because of these scars, our confidence level in wearing a string bikini hits rock bottom. Anybody can relate, that is why there are many techniques on how stretch marks can either be entirely removed or reduced and made less noticeable. According to doctors, stretch marks are not hazardous to one’s health. Having them does not limit the body to function properly. In fact, stretch marks are like scars. And just like scars, stretch marks are damages to the dermis. What makes it difficult to deal with is because they can be too dark and too ugly to look at. Some people resort to lotion and topical creams. They diligently and religiously apply these on the surface and hope that there will be improvements. In some cases, there are. In others, it does not. At least, not as much as they expected it to work. There are so many ways on how you can remove or reduce those pesky stretch marks. Here are some of the latest: 1. Retin-A Treatment This is what doctors normally recommend. You cannot purchase

Retin-A without a prescription. However, this solution works best if the stretch marks are less than a year old. For you to know when the perfect time to try this remedy is if your stretch marks still have a pink or reddish color. Problem is, not all stretch marks start off with that color. There are limitations when you can use this. Do not use RetinA if you are pregnant and breastfeeding because this might have a side effect on the infant. The way for you to know if the solution is working for you is if you feel a burning and peeling sensation on the surface you applied it on. This means that the new generation of collagen is replacing the old damaged one. 2. Micro-Dermabrasion Treatment In this process, chemical materials containing micro-crystals are sprayed on the skin using a device similar to a vacuum cleaner. This treatment required multiple sessions, normally 10 to 12 sessions in a span of three to four months. Unfortunately, micro-dermabrasion treatment is brutally painful. Some who tried this said that it was similar to being lashed and whipped. The process may also create additional scars. After one session, you are

not allowed to go directly under the sun so as to not have further side effects. At the moment, researchers are still looking on the effectiveness of this surgical remedy. 3. Laser Treatment Laser or Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation has been used in eye surgeries and removal of tattoos. Laser has been proven to be highly effective when it comes to surgeries. With it, wrinkles, scars, acne, facial and body hair have been successfully removed. In removing stretch marks, the procedure can be very painful. There would be bruising, scabbing, peeling and redness after the session. Multiple sessions are required in the treatment. However, just like all remedies, this does not work for everyone. Technology has been helpful in our lives. Latest discoveries make life easier for us. As it turns out, these discoveries in technology also contribute in enhancing aesthetic appeal. Whether the stretch marks be completely removed or merely reduced, at least the conducted processes are proof that technology assists us in many ways imaginable.

When and where did you meet Gigi Lamara? He’s an old family friend. I have always known him since a very long time as well as Nancy Ajram and her family. What was the first thing Gigi said to you? He thought that I had a good voice and I could do something different if I was positioned correctly in the singing career.

an egyptian star is born

Karim Wagdy By: Riham Fouad

What is your relationship with Gigi Lamara? He monitors my career artistically and gives me professional advice on how to handle the music business. as you would imagine, Nancy Ajram occupies all his time and focus so I’m grateful he still finds time to help me because he believes in me. My father helped me in financing this project and hopefully I should sign soon with a production company.

Your video clip “3ayez aghanny” is very successful, you worked with director Leila Kanaan one of the best; Did you enjoy working with her? What is her best quality? How was work on location? Working with Leila Kanaan was a such a privilege that I’m so thankful for. She is the biggest and most sought after director in the Middle East right now, and her work record includes nothing less than the top of the top A list music super stars. She doesn’t work with newcomers so for her to give me a chance and work with me, it was definitely a bonus for me. She’s extremely talented and ambitious and has an ability to make her vision a reality. There is a beautiful woman with you in your clip, who is she? How did you get in touch with her? Her name is Catherine Vecchi &

she’s a Brazilian Victoria’s Secret model. Leila works with a lot of international brands and fashion houses and was the one to choose her for the video because she felt she could deliver a very Mediterranean look. Also this is her first ever project to do in the Middle East so she’s a very fresh face. What is your next step? I am planing to do another single and then an album and hopefully by then I will have a production company to support me and launch me on a bigger scale. What is the most important gadget that you can’t live without? My phone Karim Wagdy is courtesy of Moustafa Kayed / Go Hype PR

How to avoid eating junk food during summer By: Sarah El Etribi

One of the best things about summer is that both males and females are always keen about is keeping a slim body. Girls want to have a flat stomach for their flashy bikinis and boys want the shining packs for the swimsuits. This is always a hard task because summer comes after the pressuring time of exams and work stress where people reach out for food in times of depression just to feel good. Although junk summer food seems very tempting, some people actually starve themselves for the good look during summer… But this isn’t necessary if you follow those simple steps, 1. One of the best things about summer is fruits; fruit shakes are always healthier and more natural than fatty, sugary ice cream and other soda drinks. You could also try sugar-free juices. 2. Swimming in the beach/ pool for around 30 minutes daily makes you feel light and healthy. It’s also considered good sport because it gives a flat stomach and when you swim for a long time, you feel full and don’t necessarily need something to eat. 3. Doing sports in the morning like yoga or running makes you feel fit; it burns your body fat and makes you feel good for the rest of the day 4. Sandwiches on the beach/

pool are always tempting, you can go for it, but try grilled food which is typically fried; it’s healthier and has the same great taste (example: grilled chicken instead of fried chicken with too much mayonnaise) 5. WATER is always a good option in any occasion. If you feel the urge to open up a Pepsi bottle, think about how slim you’d look if you drink water instead (not to mention water being healthier) These all seem very logical solutions to how to avoid all the tempting junk food but it’s not necessarily the route we take. But there are some other things you can do to force yourself not to reach out for fatty sugary snacks. A perfect day can start by waking up in the morning, running around your place for 30 minutes or so. Head back home afterwards to prepare tasty fresh home-made juices and a bowl of salad with all your favorite tasty and colorful vegetables (colorful food is always tempting so a variety of vegetables in your bowl will make it appealing in the middle of the day!) When you’re staying at the beach or the poolside, try to swim for 30 minutes as this would give you a healthy, fit looking stomach. After that you can try some yoga exercises on the beach, maybe during sunset. This would be extremely relaxing and with the all the activities you’ve got to do during the day, you will probably forget about having to eat ;)

O

Beach, the ultimate summer destination opens its doors

It is in a chic yet natural style that the only five-star day beach in Jordan, the much-awaited O Beach, opened its doors on the 29th of April bringing the Dead Sea to a whole new level of luxury beach experience. First there was the venue that was completely transformed on this occasion into a dazzling mixture of green and white reflecting the emblematic flashy color of the project, and the glowing shades of the invitees’ outfits, all melting into one gleaming atmosphere to savor. And then there was the crowd… renowned faces, social figures and the elite of Jordan and neighboring countries all gathered to celebrate the achievement of the pioneering O Beach and the first launching of a much anticipated beach concept that will be soon developed in the MENA region. But ultimately, it was all about the discovery of the O Beach experience in enchanting tours that introduced the crowd to a new understanding of beach leisure. Guests were led through a spectacular entrance with a first impression of a natural mood accented with earthly greens and light browns in a super elegant yet authentic set-up. The first stop at the richly decorated Lebanese and Italian restaurants, Omara and O’Sole, allowed guests to feast their eyes and their palate on the rich array of innovative cuisine whilst enjoying drinks and assortments of flavorsome ‘hors d’oeuvres’ over stunning views of the Dead Sea. The tour then continued alongside a Tex-Mex restaurant, Orilla, set within a lush palm groove and slowly leading to the exclusive Bed Lounge Area reserved for adults only, for sassy social hangouts and

lazy sun-soaking on king-size day beds that promise pure relaxation. Here guests were able to unwind poolside and enjoy a variety of refreshments and a selection of refined starters while rejoicing in the charm of private lounging spots and sweeping Dead Sea sights. Invitees were then exhilarated by the “totally Oh” 12 day-use Cabanas with their own Jacuzzi, all designed for beauty in verdant scenery and utmost privacy. Private butler service, outdoor cooling system and LCD all combine to highlight a memorable sneak preview on O Beach endless possibilities. And with the dazzling Olea Spa, guests got a taste of an open-air SPA experience offering 7-shaded treatment rooms with direct extensive sea views. As the tour ended guests gathered at the Main Pool Area alongside infinity pools where O Beach professional staff served up delicious cocktail food in a dinner-buffet style facing infinity expanse of the Dead Sea waters and under magical rhythms of well-chosen entertainment. The event culminated at midnight with the release of hundreds of shimmering sky lanterns lighting up the dark skies to grace the festive ambiance with a breathtaking show. The evening ended on an energetic, engaging note at the glamorous O Bar under the piped-in tunes of a hyped DJ specially brought in for the event to enthrall invitees until late night hours. An indomitable opening ceremony with remarkable panache and impeccable service that captured the true essence of O Beach, a startling day beach with an equally startling concept and the definite summer “it-spot” for day beach luxury lovers.

Leila Kanaan

By: Riham Fouad

She is the winner of the Best Director in the Middle East Music Award in Egypt. She is the director of “Waving Flag” the Fifa World Cup song of the Canadian artist Kanan & Nancy Ajram. She is the youngest best director.

First of all we want to know how and when you started to work in the media. Let’s go back to the beginning I was born in Saida (South Lebanon), from a doctor father and a household mother. Since my very young age, I used to pass my time ballet dancing and sewing canvas. Soon, I got interested in photography, collecting stamps and chocolate packages.I also used to spend a lot of time watching films and cartoons on TV, reading comic books and taking dance lessons. After graduating from school I decided to enter IESAV (Institute of Theatrical and Audiovisual Studies) in Beirut.During my four years of study, I gained experience by working as an assistant director, sound engineer, camera operator and editor on short films, TV spots, music videos and documentaries. As soon as I finished my studies at university, I found myself rapidly working on my first music video for singer Bashar Darwish. The very low budget video wasn’t a smash but was unique enough to catch the attention of Issa Ghandour, for whom I directed the music video for the song “Minsafer”. My first hit I guess was Joe Ashkar’s “Waynik” TV clip, that truly introduced my work to all singers and viewers.I showed the female character in a provocative yet sensual way. It was rare by then to show strong dominant women in Arabic videos. Another hit was Yara’s “Twassa Fey” video that made quite a buzz and made me best known in the Arab World, especially in Egypt. After this I started receiving lots of music video offers and more and more people were interested in collaborating with me. Today I’m very lucky to be working with big stars such as Nancy Agram, Haifa Wehbe, Yara, Rashed El Majed… On another hand, I directed two short films in parallel to my music

videos: “My Father’s House” and “After the storm”.In “My Father’s House”, I depict my native country and parents’ home as an oriental madhouse, where obsessions, the fullness and intensity of life, fears of war and downfall all come together in a Babylonian-like fashion. (you can check some extracts on my website if you’re curious!)As for “After the Storm”, it’s a testimonial that followed the highly destructive war between Israel and the Hezbollah in July-August 2006. It’s a moment of silence for all the souls that left us in a terrifying way.I was satisfied of both short film’s career, they were selected in honorable short film festivals. Recently I started directing TV commercials. So that’s how I started and where I am today! Weren’t you afraid of the challenge of competing as a young woman in a man’s field? Honestly in my case? NO. ... Of course it’s a “male-dominated environment”, but so is the whole region we’re living in! So I guess my struggles are the same as every other woman trying to break through… Now the music video business has a particularity: A director must have an artistic vision and the technical know how for sure, but also has to deal with a very wide range of emotions. This is where being a sensitive woman, with a feminine sensibility, can help to convey certain feelings. I think it’s this particular feminine touch and approach that I have that seduced both male and female artists I worked with and then also the audience. Feminist movements (inspired by Simone de Beauvoir) have done their job more than 40 years ago in France, in Europe and in America… But I feel we - as women - are still even more than 40 years late in this part of the world. When it comes to

Politics, Work, Marriage, Law and Power in General, we are still far behind men. So yes, I think there’s still a lot to do to help Arab women emancipate, free themselves from the form of slavery Arab men put them in sometimes and I think it truly is important to try and show them how to be strong and independent rather than exploited most of the time. Do you think there is a competiton between men and women in the media? I personally don’t see things in terms of competition! Most of the people in the field still see things and are only motivated by competition unfortunately. Reminds me of school era! I have never felt discrimination from the day I started worked. You make yourself respectable or a joke either you are a woman or a man. Best of it if you were a women the effect is bigger! We’re very lucky! Who encouraged you to start your career? My mum. She ‘s my best friend and my mentor. She started helping me from the day she started reading me stories before I go to sleep. She was the reason to develop my imagination and my visual memory. Weren’t you afraid of making any professional mistake which could be a wrong turn for your career? I don’t believe in failure or mistakes. The concept of failure is relative and failure for someone can be success for someone else! When I work I only do what I feel like doing at the moment of creation. I don’t consider anything else. If you start calculating you can’t create anymore and you start compromising! It’s not healthy at all!

feature Who gave you the tip for your first important “client” ? Every time I did something for someone I considered him as Important client regardless if he’s perceived as important from others. At the end of the day it’s MY work and I always do the maximum with what is given to me. So the tips came from intuition most of the times. I listen to the little voice within me everytime. It’s my guide. Most important I love my work, it’s my playground so when you feel this way about what you do and you work from your heart you will succeed and your creation will vibrate somebody’s heart. Leila as a director and filmmaker works with a lot of famous singers like, Haifaa, Nancy Agram, Myriam Fares, Yara, etc. and in every clip you present a different mood, decor, atmosphere and colors, What is your secret? And what is the first thing you think about when you hear the song? People say my trademark is simplicity, sensuality, hypnotic mood and emotional imagery. They identify with the characters in my work, I guess it’s because I work really hard to make them believable. I also think there’s nostalgia, in general, in what I do. That’s because I create a world of my own by mixing vintage objects from different places and times. I like to draw each frame like a painter does in his painting. I like old times where everything was slower and people used to take time to feel and live things! Emotions were more precious and had more value and relationships weren’t as easy as today. You had to think and calculate the way you were going to say Hello to a lady or a man and only a smile would make your day! Even when they get married they use to keep some distance, their beds were separated! That’s why they were able to stick to one person all their lives! I think people use to have much more respect for themselves, therefore for the others. Their relationships were

more intriguing and mysterious than today. Modern times don’t make me dream, I hate the fast food and prozac nation we’re living in. The past and the future make me dream. Present and reality are dull for me. That’s why I like to travel and take the viewer along!I think the fact that I also edit my own work is very important: I’m very picky in terms of choosing the moments I want to use and on which beat of the music I want to insert them. Editing is like writing a story, you have to have a way to tell your story. Either you tell it with some suspense, in a catchy way like a “hakawati” does, or you tell it in a boring way and you loose your viewer. I have various sources of inspiration; I’m inspired by LIFE, my surrounding, my reality and personal experiences, what I hear, what I see, the people I meet, the books I read, the photographers I appreciate, the filmmakers that are my idols, the painters I adore, the music I hear, especially Rimsky Korsakov’s “Scheherazade”. It’s a very mysterious piece that resumes the “Arabian Nights” in a sexy and sensual way. Sometimes it’s a shoe on a sidewalk… Basically, I’m always in REC mode! When I was thirteen years old, I used to sit on our balcony’s house for hours, watching cars passing by and trying to imagine the story of the drivers and the people inside those cars… I benefit from a very developed visual memory: in school, during history exams, to be able to find out the answer to a question, I used to close my eyes and remember the content of the page where the answer existed: how many paragraphs, how many pictures, the font of the titles and their positioning relatively to the picture… Plus, I used to watch TV a lot and read comic books. I mainly liked Tex Avery’s work. Among my favorite cartoons also were: The Pink Panther, Tom and Jerry, Betty Boop, Reppunzle and Cinderella. My favorite comics were: The Smurfs, Asterix and Obelix, and Loulou w’ Tabbouch… Today, I’m a

Lewis Trondheim fan and I have fun reading Titeuf.I used to look at people and things curiously and record scenes in my head more than talk. Today, I realize that this mental recording work I did wasn’t for nothing. I consider that I have a gold mine inside me and whenever I need ideas or inspiration, I just have to dig in. After all, you are the result of your journey. When I hear a song for the first time I try to fish images that comes directly to my mind. This is how I start. Who do you want to work with? On the international scene, I dream of directing music videos for Norah Jones, Cat Power, Amy Winehouse, kid Loco, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave….Ouf I have so many in mind!On the Arabic scene, I dream of doing a clip for Kazem el Saher, Marcel Khalife, Ziad el Rahbani…. You have attended a lot of international festivals, What did you do to participate and to become known in these festivals? Both my short films traveled to a lot of festivals especially in Europe. “My Fathers’ House” for example was shown in nineteen festivals among them the “Clermont-Ferrand short film festival”, “IMA” in France, “Festival International du Film, Fribourg”, Switzerland, “Café-Camo”, Tokyo, Japan, “Filmmuseum”, Potsdam, Germany, and “Festival International du Film”, Fano, Italy. I was also credited with three awards for it: “Best art direction”, “Best script” and “Best editing”.Actually the only thing I did is interesting films. When your film is selected and screened in the most prestigious short film festival “Clermond Ferrand” it’s very easy to have your film though after and selected in other festivals. Lots of producers, festival organizers and people from all kind related to media come yearly to the festival to discover new talents. So one door opens the other like a Russian babushka doll.

“After all, you are the result of your journey. ”

feature How was your first red carpet? It was amazing. I was at the Clermont Ferrand Short film festival presenting my short film “My Father’s House”. I was so proud and happy walking on the red Carpet in a nice dress and being photographed constantly while passing by! It’s always nice to be the center of attention and feel loved and appreciated! It’s very motivating sometimes! Will we see Leila Kanaan as an actress or in any other field? Acting I don’t think so… It’s not really something I’m searching for. I tend more to singing, photography, designing clothes, and writing… I’ll probably publish a book one day or make my own line of dresses. How much technology is used in your clips? and in your life? A lot I guess! I love technology! In my work I try to be up to date and use new techniques to make the work richer. Technology opens unlimited options and opens door to a new way of thinking and new ideas. As long as I’m using it only because it serves my idea and it’s not here only for show off, the result comes out great. The use of it must be justified otherwise it’ll look forced and fake. In my life I depend a lot on technology too! I love the concept of internet, all the new gadgets they create day after day, it makes my life easier and it’s always fun. What are the most important gadgets that you can not live without? My iPod, iPad and my Blackberry. What about your love life? What are the main characteristics in your perfect man? I’m always in the mood for love! My man should be creative, Intelligent, cultivated, respectful, sensitive, non smoker, healthy, easy going and curious…Money and looks are not my priority. Is that too much to ask for?

What are your plans for the future? If you ask me what am I gonna have for have for diner, I’ll tell you I don’t know. I’m the kind of person that goes with the flow and try to be very open and receptive to the suggestions life puts on my way. I don’t like to have long term plans. I live day by day. I don’t really think about the future a lot, nor the past! I live in the present only and like to taste the moment. I like the idea of the mysterious future that is hiding hopefully nice surprises hopefully for me! So mostly I work on the present, to prepare the best future I can and make it happen. It makes life more interesting. I honestly didn’t plan to be the person I am today. What about transition into films, is there any movie project? Yes, today I’m dreaming of a feature film… After all, when we go to film school, we learn to be filmmakers or to work in the field of filmmaking. The purpose was never to become a music videos director or a commercials director. But once I graduated, I had to gain experience and build up my showreel. Music videos and commercials were my only way. So I started there. Today, I know I gained some credibility and showed I’m capable of doing things the way I do them so it’s easier for me to “seduce” producers and get investment for my personal project which could be a film or a beautiful TV series.I’m currently writing, but it needs lots of time and maturity, especially with someone as picky as me! So it’s early to say when the script and the production will be ready but the idea of working on a personal project excites me a lot.

The BlackBerry Mania By: Rani K. Arsanios

After the iPhone-rush period, no one would have expected a following storm in the mobile market. But the BlackBerry has successfully proven something else. It showed us its ability to reach the hearts of the Egyptian consumers; some of the pickiest customers on this planet. But the battle between the luxury phone companies, Apple and BlackBerry will never be over. The BlackBerry phone is a one super alluring piece of technology that has anything you can ever need in a cell phone. On the other hand, the iPhone, is a state-of-the-art of the smart mobile phones industry and we can only thank Apple for it. With that in mind, the BB has been getting more noticeable attention in the Egyptian market especially in the last few months. Is it because more distributors are selling the phone, or is it the word of mouth, or is it just the allure of that phone? In the course of trying to understand why people buy this phone, I came to the conclusion that the so called BB-phone is one of the technology’s new fevers currently striking our social grounds. It has everything you need and everything you don’t need. It is jammed with a wide range of applications. It was initially intended to enter the Egyptian business scene, shortly after, began to dominate Cairo’s dynamic social arena. But put in comparison with the iPhone, the BB doesn’t have as much variety of applications as the ones you will

find in your iPhone. So why is it so cool to have a BB in your pocket? People agreed that it is the BlackBerry Messaging facility that made that phone beat the competition. With the BBM you can connect with any other BB phone holder in the world at anytime free of charge. Can it get fancier than that? If you are not in touch with your BBMs on an hourly basis, you are missing out pal. If you are one of those BBM girls, welcome to the club. For all the fellas out there, please keep your BB locked because your mom, sister and your girlfriend are going to be on it all day. She will let you know when dinner is ready, when she’s leaving the Hair Salon and when she is going to be done with her girls night out. This is not only it. The BBM is predicted to be killing the competition of the instant messaging services. Why would you ever use the messaging services if the BBM costs absolutely nothing? Plus, more people are now paying for the internet service packages instead of the instant messages. Apparently, the BB phones are not only shaping our social tirends, but the business market also. Competitors will start modeling the BBM facility and so the end result is in the favor of the consumer. From another perspective, more people are spending bigger slices of their time on their BBs instead of their PCs. Since you can access your email and all the social networking applications like facebook, twitter and

many others, the demand for PCs is gradually decreasing. One issue remains, which is the Wanna-be phenomenon. With all the positive points the BB has brought to us, one undesirable thing remains; which is the social modeling effect. Many people who are completely in no need for the phone are spending their extra cash getting one of those phones just because it is the new hot thing out there. This tends to have a reverse effect on the product image because gradually; less people will be inclined to buy that phone later on when it floods the market and eventually starts to lose its shine. It is amusing how people ask for others’ BBM pin when you meet new people, they ask for your BB ID instead of your number. And if you don’t have a BBM, you will probably get the “not so cool” look. But I like my iPhone, I always argue with my friends about whether the iPhone is nicer or not. But watch out for the BB addiction. It exists. You don’t want to turn into one of those anti-social people who are not doing anything but BBMing their friends. Every time you are BBMing a friend, you are missing out on another opportunity of meeting others. And you definitely don’t want to BBM your friends while driving. From another angle, the BBM can be very handy. If your friends or relatives are outside the country, you can reach them in a second.

More than 700 people gathered at the Gezira Youth Club on Friday, April 9th 2010 to attend Head&Shoulders’s dribbling competition, in association with soccer star Hazem Emam. This event aimed at offering the Egyptian youth a chance to reach fame and stardom. Participants exceeded 110 young ambitious males who showed off their exceptional dribbling skills with their heads and shoulders in front of the jury and an outstanding audience including supporters, friends, media and journalists. Prizes were varied and distributed to 9 winners. First place winner, Amr Abdel Fadil, was offered a trip to South Africa to attend a World Cup game as well as 2000 L.E in cash, a winner’s cup, and a oneyear supply of Head&Shoulders shampoo. The remaining 8 winners were given medals and cash prizes varying between 500 L.E and 1000 L.E, not to mention a one-year supply of Head&Shoulders shampoo. Winners were respectively: Yousef Ayman (2nd place), Mohammed Abdel Fattah (3rd place), Mohammed Hamdy Hussein (4th place), Ahmad Saad (5th place), Farid Fayez Zidan (6th place), Abdel Rahman Emad Hussein (7th place) and Amr Eid (8th place). Clorets launched its long-awaited music campaign: “Clorets Music.. Confidence with every beat”. Never Game Over, an original Clorets dance song produced by the talented Egyptian musician Sary hit nightspots across the capital including Arabesque, Tamarai, Sangria, Johnny’s and Absolute. The song was also released on Clorets’s very first CD compilation, Confi-Dance: Vol. 1, which includes 16 dance tracks featuring international artists Gina Star, Angel Stoxx and Stefano Noferini whose music recently topped European dance charts. The CD also features local artists like Fahmy & Samba, Vega and Khaled Hussein. Another original track, Arabian Poise, a Middle Eastern fusion genre, was released the same night as part of Slick Expressions: Vol. 1, a chill-out compilation with music from world renowned artists who have also been featured on major chill-out compilations like Buddha Bar and Café Del Mar as well as 3 talents from Egypt. Cleila Felix, Nacho Sotomayer, Hisham Kharma, Neobyrd, Khaled Roushdy, David Clavijo and the duo Thompascal & HP Hoeger are all featured on the CD. A couple of months earlier, Clorets surprised the market with a disruptive campaign where 6 short original music arrangements (45 seconds

each) were rotated on radio endorsed by Clorets. Who was crazy enough to play music in an ad-break instead of trying to sell the brand benefits? Well, Clorets was daring enough to do just that and the audience loved it! The buzz was huge; thousands joined the brand’s fan page and messages poured in on the Facebook page and radio stations seeking to get a hold onto the Clorets tracks. The Clorets Music concept was born when Youssef ElKhadem who is responsible for the brand in the Middle East and North Africa had the somewhat crazy idea of creating original tracks to offer moments of entertainment to the masses through music. “The point is to expand the brand beyond its products and bring it into people’s lifestyle in a positive way. Clorets stands for confidence and self-expression and what better than music reflects these values”. So don’t be surprised to hear a Clorets track in a clothing store when you’re shopping or during the intermission at the cinema; it’s everywhere! Clorets is giving away free copies of the 2 CDs at various locations including Virgin Megastore. You can listen to all the tracks from both CDs as well as download original Clorets music from www. cloretsmusic.com

Emirates Group marks record profit increase in 2009-10

The Group’s outstanding performance this year, in some of the toughest operating conditions ever faced, reflects its success in maintaining its business as usual approach, remaining true to its strategy of product and service excellence. This is illustrated by the 27.5 million passengers who flew with Emirates in the latest financial year, 4.7 million more than in the previous year; as well as the expansion of Dnata’s international ground handling operations to 20 airports in nine countries. Sheikh Ahmed continued: “Time and time again Emirates has weathered adversity. We have operated through regional conflict, SARS, the Asian economic collapse and most

recently the global recession. Our 21 percent increase in passenger numbers from last year is an incredible result and has helped to cushion us from the effects of lower yields. This increase in passenger numbers is attributable not only to our position at the centre of the new Silk Road between East and West, but also to our commitment in increasing our network and service standards, during a time where many competitors were doing the opposite.” In his opening review in the 200910 Annual Report, Sheikh Ahmed highlighted the Group’s ability to flourish in adversity, despite the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) reporting that airlines’ financial

losses worldwide for 2009 reached US$ 9.4 billion – the most difficult situation ever faced by the industry. He also remarked on some of the many significant milestones for the Group that have helped ensure its continued growth and success which included Dnata’s overseas expansion strategy through business acquisitions; Emirates’ addition of 15 new aircraft; the celebration of Dnata’s 50th year of operations; the opening of Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa in Australia – one of the world’s leading sustainable hotels and Emirates’ A380 route network expansion to several new airports including Seoul, Bangkok, Toronto, Paris and Jeddah.

The Benefits of Investing in a

Wireless Home Theater By: Sarah Kamel

When it comes to having the perfect room in your home to hang out, you will more than likely always choose the room with the big TV and the comfortable couches. If you are thinking of creating a great ambiance and a desirable place to hang out and enjoy some great movies, music, and entertainment, you should definitely invest into a wireless home theater system. Having a wireless system is becoming a trend because more and more people want to have a high quality entertainment experience in their homes. You can basically turn in any regular old room into a very high performing entertainment room, with a wireless home theater system. Here are several benefits that you will get when you invest into a wireless home theater system: The first obvious reason for investing into a wireless home theater is the fact that you will be able to enjoy a “theater-like” experience right from the comforts of your home. While there are many reasons to go to the movies and enjoy the newest movies out during that time, it is also great to be able to turn on your wireless home theater system and enjoy the great sound and effects, while being at home and not having to spend the money that you would by going to the movies. In the long run, investing into a

wireless theater will definitely start to save you money by not having to go to the movies. Like mentioned before, if you are looking to watch older movies that are not out in the stores and you are craving that desirable movie theater ambiance, a great way to start is with a wireless home theater system. Being able to stay home and host all of the movie events at your place can be very cost effective and the home theater will basically pay itself in the long run, over and over again. With the fast paced technology from these days, you can invest into a blue ray wireless home theater system that will show all of your images so clear that you will feel like you are right there live in the scene. Your regular television will not be able to do this unless you actually invest in a blue ray home theater system. Be sure to get wireless speakers that can be rearranged and customized to perfection in your living room. Wireless is really what is taking over in the electronics department because you no longer have to deal with funky cables being visible and getting tangled all over the place. When it comes to creating a nice and comfy place to host a great movie event, you will want to be the one to have a wireless system that will set off the event. There are a number of retailers and manufac-

turers online that will offer you some great deals on a wireless home theater system for your home. A quality digital home theater receiver will have many features. However, some actually have too many features that go unused by most people. Meanwhile, because of these added features consumers are forced to pay more. On the other hand, some digital home theater receivers are very compact and efficient because the manufacturers were able to combine certain features together, taking up less space. The following are some of the features that you will often find on a typical digital home theater receiver today. One feature that a digital home theater receiver might have is the ability to have audio output in multiple rooms simultaneously. A simple speaker works well with these multi-room outputs. You can get an amplifier if you have low audio output to get more sound if necessary. Another feature for many digital home theater receivers is being a multi-source, which means that you can listen to AM, FM, and a CD all at the same time with just a single digital receiver. Finally, the newer digital home theater receivers not only allow you to have audio in more than one room, but will also provide the ability to have video on separate screens as well.
