Commodore’s Report
Hello Members,
This TIDE edition completes my first year as Commodore. The last 12 months have been eventful, and I believe pretty good ones for the Club. We have been able to sustain and improve the Club while facing imminent relocation and a persistent pandemic. I have to say I’m proud of the way our Club has risen to the challenges.
Club Management
I would like to express my appreciation for the effort the Management Committee has put into guiding the Club in 2021/2022. I especially want to thank two of the more hard-working members, Peter Hawker – Treasurer, and Dave Harnett - Secretary, who are stepping back from their roles to give others a go. The activity Sections have nominated new Rear Commodores, and I would like to give thanks to their Section leaders taking a break: John Lebeter – Angling Erick Erhard - Diving Steve Hayward – Power Boating Terry O’Grady – Sailing
As part of the effort to protect the Club’s future, the 2022/2023 Committee will address:
• Membership Capacity - the Committee will continue to review membership numbers each month to ensure the enjoyment of the Club by members is not impeded by overcrowding.
• By-Laws – The Management Committee has the responsibility for the Club’s By-laws, and is in the process of updating them. The intention is to have a draft ready for the members in the coming months. • Club Constitution – The Club’s Constitution needs an overhaul, and to that end, the
Committee will draft a revised Constitution for members’ review at the Half-Yearly General
Meeting in February.
Club Operations
Our General Manager Fenn McDonnell has completed his first year, and I’d like to acknowledge his efforts to date. He and our Staff have maintained and even improved all areas of Club operations, including the office, bar, galley and functions. Balancing the wants and needs of a diverse membership seeking to enjoy our little Club in their own way will always present a challenge, and I would like to thank both the Members and Staff for their efforts and patience in making it work.
Club Relocation
The latest update from Development WA regarding the timeline for the project indicates they intend to complete the breakwater by the end of the year and commence dredging and seawall construction immediately after. Land clearing adjacent to the Club will begin in September and will continue into next year. Construction of the new club facility is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2023, with a 14-month build duration. Negotiations with the City of Joondalup regarding our future tenancy agreement have been initiated, and we’re hoping to have a recommendation to present to the members in time for the Half-Yearly General Meeting in February. The response from the members to the invitation to participate in the relocation working groups has been very positive, and we will keep members apprised of the results of their work.
Finally, my personal thanks to all our volunteers for their selfless and under-appreciated help. They’re usually in the background, dedicating their time to getting things done for their Club. As an organization primarily run by volunteers, any success we have enjoyed is in large measure due to their efforts.
