The Angling Report (continued)
Boat Fishing Report – June
Glen Weymouth
Summary
Our annual May 2 day boat comp was a complete write off due to hectic easterlies blowing in excess of 24 knots both days cancelling out fishing. Not often easterlies are such a burden to fishing, but in this case the it was there was no chance of any boats getting out over the two days.
Our next boat fish was the June competition and the weather forecast was looking a lot more promising. Apparently 10-12 knots easterly backing off after lunch to 5 knots. Well it did back off, but not until 2pm. It was a little scrappy in the morning but still easy enough to fish. We had good numbers sign on with 28 competitors across 12 boats. First up Troy and myself had troubles getting past the trevally, they where in plague proportions at the normal herring haunt. This found us travelling to a northern reef casting small twisties into the wash to nab the elusive Tommy Rough. Matty Knaylor and Gem had no issues finding the fish. Matty landed himself a Sambo and Yellow Tail King Fish. Both Seriola are now categorised as 2 different species and are a good one to take back into the weigh for both weight and species points. Blue Fin Tuna where in majority of peoples bags, they are obviously still in good numbers. Our boat picked up one whilst anchored and chumming for pinks using floating baits. Whilst the majority are getting caught trolling among bait balls. Some decent size Sambos coming across the scales with Miller Cromptyon taking out the largest for the comp with a 10.180kg model. Always plenty of trevally around this year, though Andrew Lakos 1.302kg fish was and absolute brute. The dhufish have been a bit harder to find during our boat comps, especially anything north of 10kg. Terry took out the largest dhufish for the day with a 5.920kg and also landed a very decent King George of 915grams.
The results for our competition went as follows. We had 2 mini juniors weighing in for the day. Braxton Shephard with one species and 16.2 points taking out first. His brother coming in second with one species and 10.1 points. Only one junior weighing in, Connor Elliman.
Connor had 1 species and 19.7 points. Connor quite often catches more fish than dad Drew.
The veterans was a Terry Bell show with the only himself to fish the category. He had a great bag with 11 species and 204.5 points - very solid bag. The ladies section seen a club favourite pull on the boots for a fish. Dawn Cass hit the board in third with 1 species and 10.2 points. Gemma and Belinda fought it out for the top two positions with only 2 points separating them both. Gemma in second had 6 species and 113.4 points. Belinda taking the chocolates with 7 species and 115.5 points. Good haul of fish ladies. The mens was another close finish between the top three. Francis running in third with 7 species and 107 points.
Mitch Bell, part-time fisherman - full-time accountant, hit the podium in second place with 9 species and 117.8.In first place was knocking off office fingers was Matty Knaylor. Matty had 8 species and 125.5 points. Good win Matty and a first for the new boat. Troy and myself did not make the weigh in due to a fuel issue on the Starboard engine. Later diagnoses found the main copper pipe between tank and fuel/water separator was the issue. It had the tinniest of pin hole leak in it right behind a clamping point! Lucky it happened locally and not a week later when we where due to be on Thevenard Island. Thanks for Francis for sorting out the weigh, much appreciated.
The next boat comp is just a normal one day comp held on Saturday 1st July with the carry over being the 2nd of July.
Boat Captain Buckets signing out. If fishing was that easy, it would be called catching.
