By Orpington 1st BID executive director Sharon Baldwin elcome to the latest edition of W the Orpington 1st Magazine packed full of all the information you need to make the most of your town centre!

The High Street is seeing a period of great change as the town continues to evolve and develop into a modern and diverse place that can serve its residents and attract businesses.

There are several public consultations that require your attention from the Council’s local plan to the relocation of the Post Office, so please visit our website to get information and to have your say, it is your town and your views are important We give a number of talks every month about what is happening locally and it’s great to have an opportunity to speak directly to customers, so if you would like us to give your group an update or you want to give the business community some feedback then please get in touch at sharon.baldwin@orpington1st.co.uk.

It’s great to welcome new businesses into town and since our last magazine we have had the opening of the new hotel, which has proved extremely popular with both visitors and business travellers.

One of our most popular stories on social media has been the announcement that Nando’s is taking a unit under the Odeon cinema in the Walnuts – there is of course a long history between Orpington and chicken.

Keeping on the subject of history, the effort to keep the history of the Priory alive by ensuring public access to the oldest building in the borough continues.

The gardens were at the centre of the town’s summer events programme and Priory Live, now in its third year, once again proved to be a great success, attracting crowds not just from Orpington but also from much further afield as its reputation as a showcase for new and emerging talent grows.

It was great to see the Priory Gardens full of families enjoying a picnic in the afternoon sunshine before the lights came on for the evening sessions and the gardens and Priory buildings were lit up with the grand firework display, which brought the event to a spectacular close.

Remembrance Day parade and service parade and A laying of wreaths at the war memorial will mark the start of Remembrance Day events on Sunday, 13 November in Orpington.

The parade will muster in Spur Road at 9.45am and arrive at the memorial at 10am for a service and the laying of wreaths. This will be followed at 10.25am for the march along the High Street into Church Hill, passing the Royal British Legion headquarters, to All Saints Church for a Service of Remembrance at 10.50am.

A short walk through the cemetery will lead to the grave of Ivy Millichamps, who was the last civilian to be killed in Britain in World War Two. Thirty-four-year-old Ivy lived in Kynaston Road and was killed in the kitchen of her home by the last V2 rocket launched by the Germans in 1945. The rocket left a crater 40ft wide and 20ft deep and injured 24 other people in and around the street.

After placing a posy on Ivy’s grave, the group will move to Canadian Corner for another service and wreath laying ceremony before marching back past the Legion into Bruce Grove at about 12.10pm. This year, Orpington 1st will be installing 300 poppies in the high street.

Hall hosts first film with Jack and the Beanstalk to come as a Christmas treat rpington Village Hall hosted its first ever film screening on Saturday, 8 October and has OLocally been hailed as a huge success. filmed and produced World War II drama Blitz and Bananas was shown in the small hall and was well attended with an audience of over 70 people of mixed ages.

The film’s producer and director, Anna Littler, opened up the event with a talk and question and answer session, and encouraged attendees to examine various props and original World War II artifacts. There were some World War II survivors in the audience, who were exchanging inspiring stories and personal memories of the war, and several year six pupils from Darrick Wood Junior School also enjoyed the occasion while supporting their studies about World War II as part of the national curriculum.

Jack and the Beanstalk the pantomime is showing at Orpington Village Hall on Saturday, 10 December.

Due to last year’s sell out performance of Sleeping Beauty, the touring pantomime company Shooting Stars will be offering two performances this year – a matinee at 3.30pm and an evening show at 6.30pm.

Tesco supports dementia charity esidents with dementia are being helped to live as R well as possible thanks to donations of fresh produce from Tesco in Orpington.

Each week the store hands over quality food including fruit, vegetables, bread and cakes to the St Paul’s Wood MindCare Dementia Support Centre as part of the Tesco Community Food Connection programme.

MindCare uses the food to make fresh healthy meals for people attending the centre run by Bromley and Lewisham Mind at the United Reformed Church Hall in Giggs Hill, St Paul’s Cray.

Those attending also get involved in preparing the food for cooking, maintaining everyday skills essential to living well with dementia.

“It is wonderful to be part of an innovative, socially and environmentally friendly scheme such as this and we are grateful to Tesco for involving us,” said Ben Taylor, chief executive of Bromley and Lewisham Mind.

“It is a great example of how businesses and charities can work together to serve their local communities.”

Claire Davies, customer experience manager at Tesco in Orpington, said the store tried to help where it could, creating a spirit of warmth and community. “We are building links with the community and a foundation because we are based in the community,” she explained.

With between 40,000 and 50,000 shoppers a week passing through its doors, Tesco is well placed to assist many other local charities, groups and organisations in a variety of ways. The Salvation Army uses the large downstairs area for collections, the Scouts raise cash with bag packs and a

In addition, just before Christmas and in the summer, Foodbank takes over the entire foyer for two major collections.

The store’s own community champion Beverley Smith organises many donations of gift cards or specific items to charities such as MacMillan Cancer Support or for local school fetes and other events.

She also hosts Farm to Fork visits by local children, where they learn about the value of good nutrition. The youngsters are given goody bags to take home with recipes they can make with their parents.

“We want to serve Orpington shoppers a bit better every day,” said Claire, who hails from the valleys of Wales. “I am passionate about it.

“Growing up as a kid, if we had not had help, with all the mines closing down, I do not know where we would be.

“People are in a bad position sometimes and we have got to give out to those people.”

Pop up Orpington rom tabletop to profitable shop F that is the theory behind our latest project in our business support programme.

We have just leased the premises at 104 High Street, Orpington, which will shortly become a pop-up shop providing new start-ups with retail space to trade test their products and services to the public.

We already have a number of businesses, who wish to rent space on a temporary basis and put their ideas into practice, many of whom have recently completed one of our business start-up courses.

It is great to see the programme coming to life and startups taking a real step forward in reaching their goals.

The shop is in the heart of the conservation area, an area of the High Street that requires a bit of TLC and where we hope to encourage some greater footfall, so please pay us a visit and see what’s new.

Forum focus Our latest forum meeting took place on Monday, 10 October. Held at Finch House Cafe, it attracted a good crowd of local businesses and was attended by the police team, councillors and Orpington 1st chairman Martin Price.

The focus of the meeting was on the new draft rateable values that are proposed for April 2017.

Rates are collected by the local authority on behalf of central government, whose aim has been

to set the review as cost neutral. What this means is that London and the south east have seen significant increases proposed with the extra revenue raised going to support less successful areas of the country.

The BID is in direct dialogue with the valuation office to ensure that we can provide support and information to individual businesses.

Town centre officers have patrolled Priory Gardens Orpington Library on in plain clothes resulting in four individuals being dealt three days with for cannabis use. Bromley Police will not tolerate this important family space being blighted by blatant a week drug use.

Following anti-social behaviour (ASB) near a fast food outlet a temporary dispersal zone was recently put in place on Orpington High Street. This resulted in eight youths being banned from the High Street for a period of 48 hours.

This had the desired impact with no further ASB calls being directed to the team. Additionally, this has led to officers working with Bromley Council and applying for civil sanctions (ABCs) to challenge their behaviour.

Town centre officers have also dealt with numerous shoplifters. Local knowledge is paying dividends with several incidents captured on CCTV resulting in a number of offenders being identified and charged by the team. This included one violent shoplifter detained by PCSO Jo Sandell.

In this incident an assault on security staff resulted in criminal charges for both assault and theft with the suspect remanded in custody. Bromley Police will seek to put all violent thieves before the courts at the earliest opportunity.

On a lighter note PCSO Sandell has also has been

engaging with the elderly community in the craft event at Finches.

PCSO Vic Tuley continues his anti-scam work with the banks to protect those most vulnerable.

Popular chicken chain Nando’s is opening a new restaurant in Orpington’s Walnuts Shopping Centre.

Centre owners Rockspring, which bought the centre for about £45 million last year, announced that Nando’s had signed a 20-year lease.

The outlet next to the seven screen Odeon Cinema is expected to open in December after a £1 million refit.

“We can’t wait to bring another dose of peri-peri to Orpington with our second restaurant opening later this year,” said a spokesman for Nando’s.

The company joins American dessert cafe Creams, Dean’s Diner and Bella Italia as well as the 61-bedroom Premier Inn Hotel, which opened in August.

“Nando’s is an important letting for the Walnuts and is testament to both the strength of the shopping centre’s location and the new leisure offering,” said Shaun Hose, asset manager at Rockspring.”

“There were nearly 100 entries this year,” explained Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin. “We were delighted not only with the number of entries but also the quality of the entries. he Christmas story is one of the greatest stories ever told. It is a story of the scandal of a teenage birth, political intrigue at the palace, the shame and worry of being homeless and a desperate flight to freedom.

There are kings and shepherds, stars and animal dung, angels and donkeys. It is the story of hope, peace and new beginnings even when things seemed to be at their darkest.

Churches Together in Orpington is once again offering shoppers a reminder of the tradition behind Christmas with a chance to ‘Get in the Picture’ at the Light Up Orpington event on Thursday, 17 November.

Started in 2008 across the UK, the initiative enables all people to be involved in the Christmas story by encouraging them to participate and experience being part of the Nativity in a fun way.

Using a ‘real’ stable, people are invited to dress in the costumes provided and using their own phone, take a selfie or have their photograph taken by one of the team.

Last year the event was very popular with queues forming for little angels, grumpy shepherds and very wise men of all ages waiting their turn.

These days it’s easy to forget the reason for the season amid all the business of Christmas. This is a gentle and fun way to remember that it’s the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Volunteer team wins Welcare award he dedication of a team of volunteers T from Bromley was recognised at the Welcare Volunteer and Supporter Awards ceremony in central London.

Welcare, whose Bromley base is in Rushet Road, Orpington, is a charity that works with children and families across South London and East Surrey providing practical and emotional support to families, empowering them to overcome challenges and access opportunities to ensure their children have a happy, confident childhood and future.

At Welcare’s inaugural Volunteer and Supporter Awards, the volunteer team award was given to a team, who volunteer together to perform a shared task or activity and have undertaken tasks in an especially imaginative or creative way.

The winning team was the admin team from Welcare’s Bromley centre comprising Patti Brazier, Sue Thomas, Jasper Browning Members of the Bromley Volunteer Admin team receiving their awards and Tony Peters, dedicated volunteers who from The Rt Reverend Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark and jointly provide administrative and office President of Welcare support that enables Welcare to continue with its vital work with children and families who live in Bromley.

The Rt Reverend Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark and President of Welcare, presented the award to Sue Thomas and Jasper Browning on the day, who represented the team.

Anna Khan, Welcare CEO, said: “The Bromley admin team are true celebrities in our fame obsessed world. Profile: Neil Davies Manager, Sainsbury’s Orpington Q: How long have you been manager at the Orpington branch of Sainsbury’s and what is your background in the retail industry?

A: I started in retail aged 16 and continued to work part-time right up to the end of my university studies. I worked for several retailers in duty/deputy manager roles before joining Sainsbury in 2007 as a deputy manager.

Last September I came to Orpington as my first role as store manager and I am really enjoying it. I really enjoy running my own store and being part of a community like Orpington, where we help so many of the same people week in and week out.

Q: What do you think of the recent developments in the High Street and Walnuts Shopping Centre?

Have you seen an increase in footfall over the past few months with the opening of the new shops, restaurants and cinema?

A: The re-development of the town has been fantastic. As a former resident of Orpington it’s really nice to see so much going on and so many new businesses opening up giving the people of Orpington more opportunities. Obviously, the more people that come to the town centre the better it is for my store so we have kept the car park competitive at three hours free when you spend £5 in the store to support the town centre. It certainly feels busier when you walk around the town during the day.

Q: Do you think Brexit has had an effect on people’s shopping habits? Are they more cautious with their money or spending more perhaps?

A: Uncertainty is never good for business and obviously Brexit brings with it a lot of uncertainty along with hopefully many

new opportunities.

However, with that all being said, we have seen very little change, if any, in people’s shopping/eating habits since the referendum.

Q: Sainsbury’s does a lot of fundraising for charity. Can you explain a bit about current and past projects?

A: As a store we always try and support local charities. We did a lot of work last year for both Help For Heroes and Sport Relief, raising over £2,000 for each of those charities. This year we have also started a partnership with Darrick Wood School to support the Saxon Day Care Centre, which as you know, is right in the centre of the town and supports many local people, many of whom shop in my store!

Q: What do you think of Orpington as a town?

A: I lived in Orpington for eight years prior to moving out last March so I have seen how the town has developed from what it was to where it is going and I am glad that I can be a part of that journey. There is no shame in saying the town was in need of some development and it is good to see that it is now happening.

Q: Do you think Orpington 1st BID has had a positive impact on local businesses?

A: Of course, I think you can see the results for themselves when you walk through the town now. While there are still opportunities right across the town, it does feel busier and obviously that will benefit all the businesses in the town.

Sharon Baldwin and the team at Orpington 1st deserve a lot of credit for what has happened.

Crowds gather for town’s third exciting music event rpington’s Priory Gardens came alive O with the sound of music as thousands of people revelled in a glorious afternoon of sun and song.

An exciting and diverse array of acts graced the stage, including the multi-award winning singer and songwriter, and BRIT School student, Natalie Shay.

The 17-year-old Londoner returned for her third Priory Live appearance joined by her band.

Now in its third year, Priory Live enjoys a growing reputation for featuring original music from across London and Kent.

Orpington 1st executive director, Sharon Baldwin said: “Once again, Orpington 1st is delighted to sponsor Priory Live, which provides a platform for some fantastic music and a wonderful opportunity for emerging artists.

“It’s great to attract so many visitors to Orpington and to bring the community together in a stunning venue.”

A selection of children’s rides and activities, along with a range of food stalls and the festival bar kept the whole family entertained between performances.

Lucy, a festival-goer from Orpington, said: “Thank you to the business community for such a fab family day out.

“The kids loved it and we’re looking forward to next year already.”

Top of the bill this year was London based rock/pop band Feral Ghost, whose new single This Is Life, reached number five in the Official European Independent Music Chart.

The band delighted the audience with its meticulously crafted stadium size songs.

As has become a festival tradition, a magnificent firework display wowed the crowds and signalled the end of another successful event.

Event organisers, Talking Box, said: “We couldn’t have hoped for a better day. The weather was great and the crowds loved it. Priory Live is growing in stature.”

It’s vital for young people to achieve the best they can

P

oung people represent our future and are the Y lifeblood of our community. It is vitally important that our young people are helped to achieve the very best they can – enriching their own lives and benefitting their community.

I am proud of the work the government is undertaking to ensure that young people have the education, skills and support they need to succeed, whether they take up an apprenticeship, go to university or move straight into work after school. It is fantastic to see the results of these efforts here in Orpington.

The government is absolutely committed to supporting young people into work. Under the Youth Obligation, those aged 18 to 21 will receive intensive support to get into work from the first day of their benefit claim. Over two and a half million more people are in work since 2010 and the figures in Orpington reflect this – youth unemployment has fallen here from 285 in May 2010 to 95 in July 2016.

In January this year, I was delighted to open the new JTL training facility on Orpington High Street. JTL is one of the top work-based learning providers in England and Wales, offering advanced electrical apprenticeships, plumbing apprenticeships, engineering maintenance apprenticeships, and heating and ventilating apprenticeships. It is fantastic to have this terrific new facility at the heart of Orpington.

Apprenticeships give young people the opportunity to

learn a valuable skill while earning and during the last parliament we saw the biggest ever increase with over two million people starting an apprenticeship. The government is committed to delivering three million more apprenticeships by 2020. We have also ensured that it is easier for businesses to hire apprentices by abolishing employers’ National Insurance contributions for apprentices under 25.

On a final note, the government is working hard to keep higher education financially sustainable, while maintaining world class education standards and enabling more people to go to university. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds are now going to university at a record rate – up from 13.6 per cent in 2009 to 18.5 per cent in 2015. The government has also removed the cap on student numbers, allowing thousands more students to enjoy the returns that higher education brings.

It is fantastic to see the government’s policies coming to fruition in Orpington and I look forward to hearing about the progress of the first cohort of Orpington’s JTL apprentices.

LIFE COURSE romley SNB, the borough’s B Safer Neighbourhood Board, currently funds a youth engagement scheme run by London Fire Brigade named LIFE. Board members rescently attended the passing out parade at Orpington Fire Station.

The course is targeted at young people aged between 14-17 who are excluded from school or involved in antisocial behaviour and crime. The aim of the week long course is to develop long term changes in attitudes, aspirations and confidence, as well as becoming more responsible citizens.

At the end of the course they are presented with a certification portfolio which can be used for future interviews.

More new homes planned for town ore new M homes, including many of them affordable, could soon be built in Orpington if a planning application for a development in Homefield Rise gets the go ahead.

In a joint A CGI image of the partnership proposed development scheme, McCulloch Homes and Affinity Sutton – one of the largest providers of affordable homes in England – are proposing to build 105 apartments on land currently occupied by 13 detached and semi-detached houses. Affinity Sutton currently owns four of these homes.

A planning application was submitted in September and is expected to go before Bromley Council early next year and if approved, work on the site could start around August 2017.

The houses would then be demolished to make way for four new blocks comprising 20 one-bed and 85 two-bed apartments.

A total of 21 will be offered at affordable rents including four that have been specially adapted, 56 for shared ownership and 28 for market sale.

Each will have a balcony or terrace and there will be parking spaces, cycle storage and shared gardens.

A spokeswoman for Affinity Homes said the development would give local people the chance to get on the housing ladder and make a positive contribution to the regeneration of Orpington town centre.

“It’s a really nice combination,” she said. “That whole area is being renewed. It’s a really positive story for local people.”

A public consultation exercise was carried out earlier this year allowing residents and businesses to view the proposal and make comments.

“Feedback came from local people and that feedback has been taken on board,” the spokeswoman added.

Terry Phillips, land manager for McCulloch Homes, said the new development would clean up that part of the street frontage, giving it a more attractive air.

He said people who attended the consultation felt the housing would support local businesses on the High Street and also help meet the borough’s housing targets.

“It’s proximity to the High Street and train station is one of its attractions for us and for the people living there,” he said.

Crime summit romley’s Annual Crime Summit at B the Civic Centre this autumn attracted around 100 people including partners such as police and fire, residents, councillors, businesses and representatives from local organisations.

Organised by Bromley’s Safer Neighbourhood Board, it featured a keynote speech from London Fire Brigade Commissioner Rob Dobson on ‘Blue Light Collaboration on Crime’, an update on crime statistics from Police Borough Commander Chris Hafford and the launch of a short personal safety film made by members of Bromley’s Youth Council with support from the council’s youth services.

The event ended with a lively question and answer session and there was time during the morning for attendees to visit a range of stalls on a safety theme.

rpington athlete Dina AsherSmith returned triumphant from the Olympics after helping the 4x100 metre relay team storm home to an a bronze medal.

Dina and her teammates Asha Philip, Desiree Henry and Daryll Neita finished third in a British record time of 41.77 seconds in the Rio Olympics in front of a delighted crowd. The United States took the gold medal with Jamaica coming in second to secure the silver.

The former Perry Hall Primary and Newstead Wood Secondary School pupil also finished fifth in the 200-metre Olympic final with her fastest time of the year.

Twenty-year-old Dina became the first British woman to win the European 200 metre title earlier this year.

She set the British record of 22.07 seconds at the World Championships in Beijing, becoming the fastest teenager in history. She also holds the GB women’s 100-metre record.

Dina recently met up with Orpington MP Jo Johnson, who offered his congratulations following her medal-winning performance in Rio. “What an incredible result,” said Jo. “Congratulations Dina.”
