Welcome to Orpington 1st

By Orpington 1st BID executive director Sharon Baldwin ollowing continuous requests F for more copies of this wellread magazine, I can now welcome even more customers to this summer’s 2017 edition.

It is great to have had such positive feedback and growing interest from customers both near and far about what’s happening in the town centre.

The town is also gaining recognition for its important position as the London/Kent gateway and we have recently been featured in various Kent publications and contacted by several towns in the South East, who want to know more about the positive developments and opportunities that they are hearing about being created in and around Orpington.

The year began for us with two major events – the first was Opportunity Orpington developed to showcase the town to residents, businesses and potential investors.

We had a fantastic response and have been delighted with the level of interest from new businesses, who want to start up or relocate to the area.

I am delighted that even the long-term empty property that was once the restaurant ASK and which has proved to be such an eyesore for so long and an issue for neighbouring businesses has now been sold. Having met the new owner and heard their ideas and passion for the area, I am sure that we are all in for a treat! So look out for more information in the coming weeks on our website.

This part of the High Street, the start of the conservation area, is one that has been challenging for a variety of reasons but one that we have been focused on supporting

and it is here that we chose to launch the Orpington 1st Pop Up Shop, now let to the awardwinning Photo Village. It is an area attracting increasing interest from investors aware of all the great businesses, who call it home, such as Amity Blinds, the winner of the House and Home award at our second event of the year, Orpington’s Finest, which you can read about on page 23.

This area also connects the High Street to the beautiful Priory Gardens, a valuable green space that we will be connecting to with our summer planting scheme and installations in early June. The improvements being made to College Square, which are now underway, are due to finish at the end of the summer holiday period. Although disruptive, we are sure that the end result will be worth it and we look forward to the launch of a new market and a great space to host a programme of events for local residents to enjoy.

The day is organised for businesses to network in a social setting and also provides the opportunity to raise funds for locally based charities. This year the organisation chosen is mental health charity Mind.

Orpington showcases what it has to offer pportunity Orpington O Business Show marked the start of a development campaign for the area being delivered by Orpington 1st and the Borough of Bromley in partnership with Walnuts Shopping Centre owners Rockspring.

The event provided a showcase for the town centre as well as providing support and information for both start-up and established businesses from a wide range of exhibitors and speakers. Local residents could also find out about new residential developments and improvements to the shopping centre’s public square.

The Hive on the Orpington campus of London South East Colleges provided the venue for the event, which was opened by Bromley Mayor Cllr Ian Payne and Shaun Hose from Rockspring.

Portfolio holder for renewal Cllr Peter Morgan, Bromley’s chief executive Doug Paterson were also in attendance.

“The BID’s role is to support business and provide opportunities to promote the town and encourage investment and we are delighted with the feedback from this year’s event,” said Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin.

“Working closely with Rockspring and their agents KLM, ensures we have a joined up vision for the town centre.”

Chris Travers, Orpington 1st BID Manager, added: "The number of vacant units in Orpington town centre has halved over the last four years, which demonstrates the renewed interest in Orpington as an opportunity.”

Targeted investors who visited the show were extremely positive about the opportunities that the town now offers, and are looking forward to continued discussions.

One popular exhibitor was The Sociable Wine Company run by husband and wife team Lucy and Jonathan Callow from Orpington.

The couple supply superb niche wines not widely available in supermarkets including some from The Mount at nearby Shoreham in Kent.

They set up the business because they wanted to create a fun and relaxed way to enjoy great wines, coming up with the idea of getting away from traditional venues and into more informal outdoor events such as food and drink and music festivals. Jonathan and Lucy also run event bars, wine tasting sessions, an online shop and wholesale service.

The Big O Festival is back – bigger and better than ever! his summer’s Big O Vintage Festival on Saturday, 1 T July promises to be even bigger and better than ever.

Now in its third year the festival organised by Talking Box Events in partnership with Orpington 1st and held in Orpington’s Priory Gardens has become a firm favourite with families looking for a day out with a difference.

With even more themed tents including the event’s first retro gaming tent, where kids, mums and dads get the chance to play the original arcade games from the 70s and 80s.

Look out for an amazing collection of TV and film props including the car from the film Back to the Future as well the iconic cars from the 60s television programme The Saint and the Incredible Time Machine.

There will be live music in each tent and on the main stage including Kitten Von Mew, Betty Bluebird (40s) The Dots, Ruby and The Reds (50s) The Gallerys (60s) and Glamstar (70s) plus DJs, dance sessions and great exhibits.

Take a trip on the big wheel and rummage for a retro bargain in the lovely vintage

market among the stunning backdrop of vintage vehicles.

The festival kicks off at 10.30am with the grand parade of classic cars through the High Street before the gates officially open at 11am. This is followed later by the now traditional ‘100 Scooter ride in’ through Orpington and into the festival at 1pm.

The fun packed day continues this year until 9pm.

Talking Box Events said it was proud to be working in partnership with Orpington 1st, which was once again fully supporting the event and helping to keep the Big O free to enter for all.

This will enable us to target retailers, who can add value to the retail experience and allow us to engage with potential investors in a more professional and meaningful way backed by stakeholders such as property owners and the planning authority.

Annual General Meeting

Quarterly Forum Meeting he spring QFM took place on Monday, 10 April and T was once again hosted by Finch House, a venue that has proved very popular with its central location and spacious interior.

However, if you would like your venue to host one of the QF meetings then please let us know as we want to ensure as many businesses as possible are involved and able to attend.

This event gives all businesses the opportunity to meet the BID team and the directors, who represent you on the board.

You can find out what is going on in and around the area, the changes taking place in the High Street and how the BID can support you and your business.

The April meeting included an update from the police, a recap of the business rates revaluation and an update on new business interest in the area.

Chris Travers, the BID manager, also updated businesses on how the joint procurement project that we run has saved businesses hundreds of pounds and how this free service is on offer to all levy payers.

The next date is Monday, 10 July from 5.30 to 7pm, venue to be confirmed.

A plan of action The BID has partnered with the local authority to produce a development report for the town centre.

The work is being carried out by Cushman & Wakefield because the town has been gaining a reputation as a great place to locate and in which to invest.

However, we have no agreed plan on how and where this interest is best accommodated and how it might impact on those that live and work in the area.

The report will provide us with a clearer understanding of the challenges and opportunities we have and agreement on potential development sites.

We have lots of interest from the big names you all want to see but we don’t currently have the right premises available to offer them.

It will also provide information on ownership and, importantly, work alongside other pieces of work that we

Changes, refits and new businesses rpington’s Post O Office has now moved into the

Orpington’s choice of food outlets has been boosted with the opening of Bakehouse@BR6.

The student-led venture is an extension of the successful BR6 Restaurant, the centrepiece of London South East Colleges’ pioneering Hospitality Food and Enterprise Career College.

It serves light lunches, coffees, cakes and cocktails and also features a shop selling a range of baked goods for customers to buy.

The Bakehouse@BR6 was officially opened by TV chefs and BR6 patrons Chris and James Tanner and threw open its doors to the public on 19 April.

“Chris and I have been long term patrons of the college, and we are proud to be here to show our support,” said James. “The new retail area will also give the public a chance to sample some of the exciting things being made by the students as well as local Kent produce – which is some of the best in the country.”

The former Bairstow Eves in Orpington High Street has undergone a complete transformation to reappear as Thomas Brown Estate Agent with a brand new frontage and new decor but the same reliable and hard working staff.

Thomas Brown has been trading as a licensed branch of Bairstow Eves since 2009 but decided to change over to its own name at the end of March.

And the new look and name seems to be having a positive effect with a record number of properties added to the books in March and the same number sold.

“It’s been crazy for the last 18 months,” said sales negotiator Amy Kennedy.

Peacocks in the Walnuts Shopping Centre has launched an in-store Jane Norman concession offering a range of high fashion clothing at reasonable prices.

The brand includes a fabulous selection of casual day and summer wear, jeans, dresses and tops with new lines added every week.

Opened in April, the concession is one of just 30 in the country and the only one in the Orpington area.

Orpington Dental Care at 342 High Street has brightened up its appearance with a smart new shop front.

WHSmith store at 189-193 High Street, just 35 metres from its previous site.

Located in a dedicated area in the store and with five serving positions and two self-service kiosks, the new office has all the same services as before. It is still operated by the Post Office and all the branch staff members have remained the same.

Roger Gale, general manager for the Post Office’s Crown branch network, said the change would help to ensure the branch was commercially viable into the future and therefore protect the Post Office services on which customers in Orpington depended.

“Our customers’ needs continue to change and we are responding to that, taking the right action to sustain our services for years to come,” said Mr Gale.

Orpington’s longest established estate agents Linay & Shipp has rebranded to coincide with the launch of its enhanced service for 2017.

Still offering the personal service on which its reputation has been built, this year sees the addition of an upgraded website and dedicated digital marketing department.

Established in 1944 to help deal with bomb damaged properties, the shop at 338 Orpington High Street has been given a fresh new look and the design of its logo has a modern feel that draws upon Linay & Shipp’s strong foundations within the town and the bond it has formed with its clients.

Budget clothing store Pep&Co has opened up for business inside the Walnuts Shopping Centre’s Poundland store.

The outlet is already proving popular with shoppers keen to pick up fashion items for the whole family at low prices.

Among the hot sellers at the moment is a range of reasonably priced school wear for boys and girls starting at just £1 for pale blue or white polo shirts and summer dresses for £3.

Olive Tree reopens with a fresh new look fter weeks A of work and a complete refit, the popular Olive Tree Cafe and Restaurant has reopened for business with a modern new look but with the same great food much loved by its loyal customers.

The old decor, last updated around 20 years ago, is now gone and in its place are cool colours and a contemporary design, bright pictures on the walls, a stainless steel edged counter and state of the art coffee machine.

“It needed an update and freshening up,” explained James Murphy, who helps run the family-owned cafe with his sister Angela Ward and father Orhan Ogretici. “Everything was stripped out and started again. It is now a lot brighter and a lot nicer place to be.”

And the changes have certainly gone down well with the many regulars, who were eager to see the transformation as soon as the cafe reopened in April.

“It is much brighter now,” said Melvon Edwards. “The food is always good and the service is very good too.”

Encouraged by the response, James is looking ahead to a positive future for the business buoyed by the prospect of many new residents moving into the area thanks to the town’s increasing popularity and a number of new homes being planned and developed nearby.

“With a healthy amount of competition it can be quite challenging to stand out and that is why we decided to update,” said James. “Good service and good food is how we

survive.”

The 70-seater Olive Tree Cafe and Restaurant, a familiar name on the High Street since 1998, was taken over by Mr Ogretici in 2009.

Priding itself on the quality of its food, customers can still enjoy the same wide range of dishes as before from breakfasts, sandwiches and baguettes to freshly cooked main meals such as moussaka and the ever-popular daily roasts of lamb, pork and beef.

And it will be working in partnership with Deliveroo to offer food for delivery.

This year’s competition, organised The Salon

by Orpington 1st in partnership with the News Shopper and sponsored

by Perrys, Walnuts Shopping Centre and Shopper Anonymous, saw a record number of entrants and a huge increase in nominations from the public.

Over 30 individual businesses were shortlisted, representing a wide range of the retail and services available within the town centre.

Chris Travers, Orpington 1st BID manager said: “Our annual business awards are a Finch House Cafe wonderful opportunity to Valentine and Turner showcase the strength and depth of Orpington’s business community and a great chance to celebrate excellent service in what has been an exciting 12 months for the town.”

Maneesh Patel from Photo Village, winner of the Best Newcomer Award, said: “We were genuinely shocked to win the Best Newcomer award against such strong competition.

Orpington currently enjoys its lowest vacancy rate since Local Data Company records began and has seen a huge increase in interest from businesses wishing to locate to the town.

Orpington 1st executive director, Sharon Baldwin, said: “The event is evidence of how well connected and positive the business community of Orpington is and how this joined up approach is helping to support the continued development of the town into a vibrant and viable town centre.”

Our High Street leads the way in making Bromley dementia friendly

ecognising that more people are living with dementia in Bromley, particularly in the Orpington area, local businesses will be hosting events for Dementia Awareness Week 2017 from Sunday, 14 to Saturday, 20 R May to make the borough a dementia friendly community.

On Tuesday, 16 May, Orpington High Street will host a dementia bus (pictured above), giving invited guests an experience of what it can be like to live with dementia. By experiencing how dementia might affect people and their families, local businesses and organisations can better meet the needs of customers using their services, making Orpington High Street a more appealing place to visit, shop and do business.

On the same day as the dementia bus, Tesco Orpington will be hosting charities and organisations, where members of the public can find out more about local dementia services and support.

Later in the week on Thursday, 18 May the Odeon in Orpington will be hosting the first dementia friendly film screening to be held in the country in Odeon Cinemas.

A co-ordinated approach to events for Dementia Awareness Week 2017 in Bromley has been made possible by a group of companies and organisations including Orpington 1st, Bromley Dementia Action Alliance, Bromley Dementia Support Hub and CWJ Solicitors.

Sharon Baldwin, executive director of Orpington 1st BID, said once again Orpington based businesses were leading the way.

With its cool modern interior, covered terrace and patio area for alfresco dining, The Bakehouse @ BR6 is the second phase of the very successful BR6 Restaurant, which was launched in 2015 as the centrepiece of London South East Colleges’ pioneering Hospitality Food and Enterprise Career College.

The stylish eatery, which overlooks a soon to be revitalised public square in the Walnuts Shopping Centre, was officially opened at the beginning of April by TV chefs and BR6 patrons Chris and James Tanner.

James Tanner, who co-owns the award-winning gastropub The Kentish Hare in Bidborough with his brother, described the opening as a fantastic milestone for the college, which continued to nurture the next generation of industry professionals.

He said education was vitally important and to see the development delivered on time and looking fantastic was a credit to all those involved.

“Having that vision I think is fantastic. It is a different way of learning, a modern way of learning and I think it is the way forward.

“It has fantastic facilities on a wonderful site in a regenerating town – what’s not to like?”

The student-led venture is an extension of the existing BR6 Restaurant, which has gone from strength to strength over the past two years and is currently rated as the number one restaurant for the area on Trip Advisor.

The Bakehouse @ BR6, which opened to the public on 19 April, serves light lunches, coffees, cakes and cocktails and also features a shop where customers can buy a range of baked goods.

“This is a very exciting day for us and our students,” said principal and CEO of London South East Colleges Sam Parrett. “BR6 Restaurant has been a huge success since its opening in 2015 and as a result we have now been able to deliver phase two of this pioneering project.”

The career college launched in 2015 and offers an employer-led curriculum to ensure students are taught skills relevant to the industry. The curriculum also includes master classes by industry experts along with exciting work experience placements and shadowing opportunities.

TV presenter and novelist Prue Leith paid a special visit to the Bakehouse to meet students and staff.

Prue was given a tour of the facilities followed by afternoon tea.

“I am hugely supportive of training programmes which provide real, hands on working alongside the theory and classroom based learning. London South East Colleges’ Hospitality, Food and Enterprise Career College offers its students a real taste of the industry, which is exactly what FE should be doing.

“This new student led Bakehouse is a superb training ground for young people and will certainly prepare them for careers in our industry. I wish the college and its students the very best and I am certain it will be a huge success.”

The college has a range of hospitality and catering courses from Level 1 right through to its new degree course – a fast track BA (Hons) in Culinary Arts and Entrepreneurship.

Walk of Witness brings town to a standstill rpington High Street was O brought to a standstill as hundreds of people marked the start of Easter with a Walk of Witness.

The celebrations began with a Good Friday ecumenical service at Orpington Methodist church in Sevenoaks Road before members of the congregation and many others gathered on the pavement opposite the church to commence their parade along the High Street and through the Walnuts Shopping Centre.

Walkers held placards naming members of Churches Together in Orpington, each one held by whoever had collected it and not necessarily by someone from the named church.

As part of the celebrations and in anticipation of Easter day itself, small Easter eggs and cards were distributed to shoppers and shop owners along the route.

The procession then gathered on the square outside the Walnuts Leisure Centre for a joyful celebration. Everyone was welcome to participate in the event as the churches in Orpington came together to pray for the town and wider community.

Profile: Giovanni Marino, Owner, Primo Caffe, High Street, Orpington Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

A: My name is Giovanni Marino and I am the proud owner of Primo Caffe.

It’s always been a lifelong ambition of mine to share a piece of my culture with my local community and Primo Caffe has given me this opportunity.

Even though I was born here in the UK, in Princess Royal Hospital not far at all from my shop, I have lived a very Italian lifestyle spending the majority of my childhood with my family in Italy.

My family originates from the south of Italy in the Calabria region. I was brought up in a warm friendly community and the love and passion my family held for each other was so uplifting. I wanted to create this warm friendly community where I now call home.

I even have pictures of my Italian family printed on the walls in Primo to continually remind me of the loving upbringing I had.

Q: How did you come to open the Primo Caffe in Orpington High Street?

A: I have always been inspired by my father to work hard and put in 100% effort in everything I do. My father emigrated from Italy to the UK in 1973 with the desire to open his own restaurant one day. He worked tirelessly until finally one day he opened his first restaurant in 1980. My father’s passion for food and his loyalty to his customers was so inspiring and contagious and as a young boy I always wanted to be like him.

After leaving school it was my ambition to provide for customers just like my father did. My dream was to open a traditional Italian coffee shop and bring a piece of Italy to my local community. I opened Primo Caffe eight years ago with the vision to have a local Italian coffee shop, where people could come to relax, meet up with friends and family.

My aim was to provide customers with a haven that they could come to enjoy really delicious food and drinks but in an environment that made them feel part of the community. I really wanted to and feel that we have now achieved a welcoming space that the community can share and enjoy.

Q: You were recently named by the public as the town’s Favourite Business in the Orpington’s Finest Competition – what do you think is the secret of your success?

A: I don’t think about work as work and play as play, it’s all about living and Primo is a huge part of my life. It’s about

spending time working on whatever you are passionate about in life, and my key to success is Primo, which I am truly passionate about.

All our products are homemade with genuine enthusiasm and passion; I do this so my customers are provided with the best possible food encouraging good health and happiness. I would not be where I am today without my customers, who have been so loyal to me over the last eight years. I have not only had lovely customers but I have also made lifelong friends since I opened.

My staff are also crucial, they keep the spirit alive and at Primo Caffe customers have developed friendly and trusting relationships with our team. I once read a quote from Richard Branson, which inspired me in how to develop my business – ‘There is no magic formula for a great company. The key is just to treat your staff how you would like to be treated, if you take care of your employees they will take care of your clients and business’. So for us, success is all about the Primo Caffe family that we have created.

Q: How did it feel to win this prestigious award?

A: I was honoured, I felt all the risk taking and hard work has really paid off. Above all, all I ever wanted to do was to create something I’m proud of, that’s always been my philosophy in business, wining this award has helped this dream come true.

The support I receive from my customers is outstanding, and was made apparent last year when I got married and received over 200 cards from my customers. We must be getting something right!

Primo Caffe’s My job is made so fulfilling every Orpington’s Finest day because I look forward to award for the town’s seeing my customers and Favourite Business providing them with the best service possible. Everyone is always welcome at Primo Caffe.

Q: There have been many new developments in Orpington over the past few years. What do you think the future holds for the town?

A: It is really encouraging working in a vibrant and developing town such as Orpington. I think the future is continued progress in this area, working and developing opportunities for shared spaces, allowing people of all ages to come together to work, live and have fun. It is also about all of us as a community being part of this, engaging in our space, taking pride and maintaining these developments.

The success of the future, in my opinion, is all about such collective engagement and passion.

Q: What are your plans for the future of Primo Caffe?

A: I’m always looking forward in business and believe that you should always work towards future goals. Setting goals gives me inspiration in achieving and looking out for the best opportunities in life.

I feel the time may have come to grow the Primo family and I would love to expand Primo to another local town.

Cash for mayor’s charities M oney collected from donations for the Orpington 1st 2017 calendar at the town’s library has resulted in a cheque for £300 being handed over to Bromley Mayor Cllr Ian Payne for his chosen charities.

The money will go to towards the Salvation Army’s Youth Project, which offers local and regional activities to engage with adults and children of all ages, and Breast of Bromley, a regional volunteer group in

Bromley. In partnership with Breast Cancer Now, the group raises money to fund vital research into finding a cure.

Cllr Payne said any money that came in for the charities was excellent and described the amount raised as ‘exceptional’.

Library manager Susan Williams said many people liked the calendar and more had wanted one this year. “There are some lovely pictures of Orpington and also one taken in the library,” she said.

Seeking a fairer business rates system

By Orpington MP Jo Johnson rpington is flourishing. It has been a great pleasure O to see new shops, restaurants and cafes appearing in the town centre and recently I have had the privilege of opening baby shop, Aurora Royal, and restaurant and cocktail bar, VIBE, along the High Street.

The development sits within the wider context of a strong, stable economy that has supported investment and growth.

The Government continues to place a business-led recovery at the heart of its agenda with measures such as reductions in Corporation Tax and investment in innovation and infrastructure contributing to record numbers of people being in employment.

I recognise concerns that have been expressed to me by some local business owners about the potential impact of this year’s business rate revaluation – bills in the London Borough of Bromley have gone up by 5.3% on average, reflecting the relative growth of our local economy.

The revaluation, which is carried out by the independent Valuations Office Agency, seeks to ensure that business rates reflect changes in the property market. Business rates are a vital part of our economy, contributing towards public spending that directly benefits businesses by providing the skills and infrastructure that companies need.

While it is not possible to abolish business rates, ministers recognise the pressure that is being placed on ‘bricks and mortar’ businesses by the digital economy. Accordingly, before the revaluation, the government committed to cuts in business rates now worth nearly £9 billion, which translates to 600,000 businesses in the UK not paying any business rates at all.

MP Jo Johnson cuts the ribbon at the opening of Aurora Royal Nevertheless, I know that the revaluation created some particularly hard cases, and I was pleased that at the spring budget the Chancellor announced further measures to support small businesses, especially those coming out of Small Business Rate Relief.

The changes will ensure that no business coming out of rate relief will find their bill increase next year by more than £50 per month. Pubs with a rateable value of less than £100,000 will also receive a £1,000 discount on business rates in 2017; and local authorities will receive a £300 million fund to deliver discretionary relief to assist in some individual cases. A review of the revaluation process will also be conducted, with the goal of making it smoother and more frequent, to avoid the dramatic increases occasionally delivered by the current system.

By 2020, local authorities will retain all revenue raised from business rates, allowing local people to benefit directly from economic growth in their area. I look forward to residents enjoying the benefits that this will bring.

Mr McHenry, who is 66, will be conducting his last service – the dedication of the parish Eucharist – on Sunday, 9 July, six years and two days after his institution.

“I feel that I have built what I felt called to build,” he explained. “In particular, in our worship, in our outreach to the community and in our ministry team. I now sense God is calling me to move on to whatever ministry he might have in mind for me and to devote more time to family and friends.”

Mr McHenry, who had a long career as a government lawyer dealing with court work, public inquiries, drafting legislation and giving legal advice before joining the church, added that it had been a very hard decision to make and with wife Liz, had felt very much part of the Orpington family.

But he pointed out that there was an excellent team to run the church during the time between his departure and arrival of a new vicar sometime in 2018 and a very able curate.

“I have made many friends in Orpington, whom I will miss terribly,” he said. “I will follow the continued revival of the town with great interest.”

Mr McHenry and his wife plan to move to Canterbury.

Work starts on public square improvements ork is well underway on W improvements to the public square in the Walnuts Shopping Centre.

Bordered by the Brunswick Square development, the BR6 Restaurant and brand new Bakehouse@BR6, and the public library, the aim of the project is to make the square more welcoming to pedestrians as well as being flexible to the needs of a variety of users.

Funding for the work was made available through a joint bid by Orpington 1st and Bromley Council to the GLA High Street Fund and consultants East Architecture Landscape were employed to develop the concept design envisaged for the area.

The improvements kicked off last summer with the installation of largescale feature signage at the library and

a bespoke mural crafted into the Walnuts Leisure Centre facade.

In March this year work began on upgrading the ground plane, installing new public realm furniture, atmospheric lighting and feature trees, as well as landscaping and replacing the existing fire escape. Enhancing the scheme is the stylish new Bakehouse@BR6 – an extension of the very popular BR6 Restaurant – complete with alfresco dining on a raised covered terrace and patio area.

The Walnuts Shopping Centre owners are keen to tie in a future relaunch of the street market to coincide with the completion of the public realm square scheme.

The programme of work has been split into two phases with the first focusing on the improvements to the

College/Market Square and with completion expected in September this year.

The second phase of the works will tie in the links into the public realm squares from the High Street, Homefield Rise and the shopping centre.

Health and wellbeing centre moves step closer to fruition rpington could see its new health O and wellbeing centre open right in the heart of the town within the next True community feel at new development ward-winning developer London A Square has launched a collection of contemporary apartments and family houses in Orpington.

The gated development of 32 one and two bedroom apartments and 58 three and four bedroom houses are situated within 6.3 acres of idyllic green space in the former grounds of locally listed building Bassetts House, now developed into apartments by London Square.

Despite the pastoral setting, residents can benefit from a Zone 6 location, with train services running from Orpington station to London Charing Cross from just 27 minutes.

A major milestone has been reached in the centre’s development with the finalisation of the commercial agreement for the provision of services, representing a key development in this ambitious project.

It is great news for Orpington residents, who will benefit from a range of community health services being delivered from high quality, modern and fit for purpose premises.

The centre will house two GP surgeries plus a range of primary, secondary and community health and wellbeing services including outpatients, x-ray and ultrasound, all housed under one roof in an accessible location.

Berkeley Homes purchased the former Orpington Police Station site in the town centre in 2015. Planning permission was granted for a new residential development with a health and wellbeing centre on the ground and first floors, which is scheduled to open for business in the next couple of years.

Dr Angela Bhan, chief officer of NHS Bromley Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We are delighted to have reached this key milestone in our plans for the Orpington Health and Wellbeing Centre.

“We are very excited to see the new centre take shape. Once it is opened we can provide a range of community based services for Orpington people much closer to home and avoid them having to go to hospital for some of their treatment.”

Peter Smith, managing director of Berkeley Homes Eastern Counties, said: “Securing such an innovative community facility for this central 2,265 sqm site is testament to the vision and commitment of all involved. It will provide superb purpose-built new health amenities for both new and existing residents of Orpington and complement the wider new additions to the town centre.”

Orpington MP Jo Johnson said the new centre would offer fantastic access to high quality healthcare in a modern setting.

“Situated right at the heart of our town centre, this is yet another boost to the provision of healthcare in Orpington,” he said.

NHS Property Services will take responsibility for the management of the new health and wellbeing centre and will work with local partners to provide the interior fit-out of the centre.
