Welcome to Orpington 1st By Orpington 1st BID executive director Sharon Baldwin e enter 2017 with some W uncertainty as to what we can expect from the world about us. But what we can be certain about is the continued development of our town centre and the continued drive by your business community to improve the retail offer and ensure that your visits to the High Street provide you with a positive and welcome experience. We would like to thank all of our customers for making the last event of 2016, Light Up Orpington, such a success with the number of visitors increasing yet again year on year and for all those attending helping us to create a lovely family friendly atmosphere. The events programme for the new year starts off with the Opportunity Orpington Show on 16 February at the college, an exhibition to showcase everything that is happening in the area and the support and advice available to both businesses and residents so that everyone can benefit from the changes taking place. The college really has taken centre stage with the planned opening of its phase two development alongside BR6 in the form of the new BR6 Bakehouse and outside dining area (opening date to be confirmed at the end February). We look forward to a summer of great food and hospitality from this innovative and award winning venture. Neighbouring the college, the new Berkeley homes development is rising fast and acting as a real beacon of quality and change for the area, and we can look forward to

watching progress over the year ahead. We have some exciting news about the provison of public toilet facilities in the town centre, a subject that many don’t want to think about but one that affects us all, so look out for further information on the subject on our website in the weeks ahead. Works are about to start on the creation of the new public square, providing a quality environment that brings together all the surrounding developments and supporting what we hope to be a fantastic new market offer. Although we will see some disruption in the short term as Fleetwood Mac once said we ‘Can’t stop thinking about tomorrow’ and it will be better than today! You may have witnessed some filming of this song in the High Street recently and all will be revealed soon! Celebrating success is always good news and this year’s Finest awards will once again be taking place at the Odeon Cinema. Your votes are requested to decide on the favourite business and best employee so visit the website for further information and have your say. We welcome three new PCSOs into the town centre team, read more about them and the policing priorities on page 11, and say goodbye to officers Pav Sandhu, Vic Tuley, and Ros Ryan, who were a great asset to the town, and we wish them well in their new positions. Happy New Year!

the Orpington Community Carol Service. Guests included Bromley Mayor Cllr. Ian Payne and other councillors, Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin and representatives from many of the organisations that serve the community. These included the fire service, police, paramedics, Street Pastors, funeral directors, Foodbank, Royal British Legion, Probus, Rotary, Welcare, local schools, churches and uniformed organisations. In celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas, the congregation was reminded of its responsibility to care for others. The Community Carol Service gave thanks for the work of those who respond to the needs and concerns of people in the borough through their selfless work either through elected office or their work, paid or voluntary. A collection at the service raised more £300 for this year’s Mayor’s charities – the Salvation Army Youth Project, which provides help for deprived youth and their families, and local cancer research charity The Breast of Bromley. The congregation enjoyed traditional carols, music and Christmas readings, including a short performance by Blenheim School Choir. All Saints’ is the historic parish church of Orpington. On this site Christmas has been celebrated for almost a thousand years. The Community Carol Service now forms an established part of this great tradition.

Spicy new addition to eating out scene new restaurant is helping to spice up AThebrand Orpington’s eating out scene. long awaited Nando’s opened in the Walnuts Shopping Centre shortly before Christmas and is already proving very popular with lunchtime and evening diners. The restaurant has created 23 new jobs for all ages and an intensive week and a half long training scheme ensured staff, General manager some with previous experience and some without, were ready Danielle Coveney to welcome guests when the doors officially opened to the with Orpington public on 7 December. The mural MP Jo Johnson “Based on the success of Nando’s in the Nugent Centre, this painted by site came up and it was thought a good place to be,” explained South Orpington general manager Danielle Coveney. “Orpington is African artist being revived with the cinema and hotel as well.” Dion Cupido With a magnificent spiral sculpture hanging from the ceiling, its bright modern interior, vibrant colours and interesting patterns, the restaurant offers an atmospheric place to grab a bite. However, its most spectacular feature by far is a huge mural painted by the coveted South African artist Dion Cupido. Cupido spent six days in Orpington producing the full wall mural of a woman’s head in a bold abstract style using industrial inks and oil paints. His work is an addition to Nando’s growing Southern African art collection, a passion, which supports South African artists through the commission of their work. Nando’s first restaurant opened in South Africa in 1987 and the company now has nearly 400 outlets in the UK and more than 1,000 worldwide in 28 countries.

Start up, step up and grow... Opportunity Orpington is literally opening its doors to the Orpington world (or at least London and Kent) on Thursday, 16 February when alongside the usual business support, information and advice at this year’s business show, we have added an area dedicated to investment, showcasing all our opportunity sites to prospective businesses. All of the town’s available premises will be open to view and agents will be on hand to answer questions. Get involved this year by visiting the show or exhibiting your own business. Further information from Sharon.baldwin@orpington1st.co.uk

Open forum Your town, your say. All of our businesses or anybody else interested in what’s happening in the town is welcome and encouraged to join us at the quarterly open forum meetings held on Monday evenings at Finch House Cafe, Orpington. This year’s dates are Mondays, 10 April, 10 July and 9 October. These meetings are all followed by a full Orpington 1st Board meeting, when all comments and views will be raised with your directors.

A plan of action As they all say fail to plan, plan to fail! That’s why we have partnered with the local authority to deliver a plan for Orpington’s future. Work is being carried out by Cushman & Wakefield that will identify the town’s next stage of development and, more importantly, identify how we get there. It will include information we have gathered from the Local Data Company on retail gaps and those companies most likely to invest in the area if we can support their individual requirements. It will use information available from our recently installed footfall counters.

Return of the Orpies Orpington’s Finest Awards ceremony will take place at 6.30pm on 2 March at the Odeon cinema in Orpington. Make sure you complete your application and encourage your customers to vote for their ‘Favourite Business’ and ‘Best Employee’. Visit our website for all the information.

BID 4 Business breakfast This must-attend event for those early risers who know how to get ahead has gone from strength to strength so why not join us over a bacon roll and coffee to see how you too can benefit. The meetings take place on the last Friday of every month at 7am in the BR6 Restaurant on the Orpington campus.

Helping to make your town safer has been a busy past few months for the High ItStreet team. We have said goodbye to three PCSOs – Pav Sandhu, Vic Tuley, and Ros Ryan – who have moved on to pastures new. We wish them well and thank them for their contribution to the High Street. We have also welcomed three new officers to the team as replacements and they are PCSOs Kai Dervish, Trevor Ford and Richard Wood. They are all eager to continue the fine work of their predecessors and get to meet the business stakeholders and the community at large. Please do introduce yourself to any of the officers you see on foot patrol in the High Street. You may notice officers wearing the newly rolled out MPS body worn video cameras. These capture vital evidence and, curiously, also reduce complaints about police. Feel free to ask us any questions you have about them. The new town centre team In the build up to Christmas, a crackdown resulted in five of our regular shoplifters being arrested for theft with four of them receiving custodial sentencing in excess of eight weeks. Thieves will continue to be held to account for their offending with particular attention to those regular customers of ours who feel it is an acceptable lifestyle choice. The team will also continue to use their local knowledge to target those committing anti-social behaviour in and around the High Street and we will be keeping an eye out for those among us who are vulnerable. There will be more joint working with stakeholders to ensure we reduce the amount of victims who fall prey to the numerous scams. Our thanks go to the banks, which assisted last year. Once again our continued thanks go to Orpington 1st BID for its sponsorship over the last year. Whether it was the use of office space, sponsored IT equipment or sponsored officers, it has all assisted in providing the town centre with its very own ring-fenced team and brought real benefits. If you need to contact police please use 101 for nonemergency matters and 999 in an emergency (persons or property at immediate risk with crime taking place then and there). Local businesses have been Simon Handley really supportive. There seems to be a real community spirit here. in the shop. Photo Village was set up by Maneesh Patel, whose Beckenham-based Right: Owner business Digital Photo Solutions specialises in printers, products and Maneesh Patel, solutions for creative professionals. Simon Handley Professional photographer Simon, who has been taking pictures since the age of 15 and worked for DPS selling printers, explained that Maneesh and Orpington MP Jo Johnson had recognised his passion for photography and decided to open the during a recent Orpington business. visit. Shower of angels brings joy to town shower of tiny knitted A angels suddenly descended on Orpington

R.B.INTERIORS

and the surrounding area with the plea ‘take me, I’m free’ and a happy Christmas wish to the recipient. The delightful and thought provoking gifts were knitted by members of Churches Together in Orpington, a local branch of a national organisation to promote Christian unity. There are 21 churches in the group and 10 were able to take part in the Christmas Angels project. Starting back in October last year, avid knitters made a total of 2,800 angels, each very different and unique. The angels were ‘commissioned’ at church services and bright and early on a Saturday morning shortly before Christmas the angels started to shower the district. The little figures found their way to Chelsfield and Orpington Stations, the Walnuts Shopping Centre and leisure centre, the Nugent Centre, Orpington Hospital, the Caritas Centre, schools, nurseries and care homes, the Food Bank and all the way from Green Street Green to Carlton Parade. The idea behind the Christmas Angels began two years ago in north-east England, when a total of 2,870 angels were distributed, mainly in the north-east. This was followed by 20,586 angels in 2015, fluttering even further afield as the project grew. Churches Together would love to hear from anyone who found or received an angel – email contact@orpingtonmethodist.org.uk or use the hashtag xmasangels.

Profile: Bill Perera, franchisee, McDonald’s Orpington Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and why you decided to open a McDonald’s in Orpington? A: I began working at McDonald’s 36 years ago and currently run four restaurants across South East London, including two restaurants in Orpington. I decided to become franchisee of the McDonald's restaurants in Orpington in 2004 and I am proud to be an active member of the local community, contributing through local employment, economic, social and environmental initiatives. Q: Why did you choose a career at McDonald’s? A: I started as a crew member at McDonald’s and thanks to the opportunities for career progression and support of the business I am now a franchisee. McDonald’s is a company that supports its staff, spending £40million a year on training and ensuring that everyone gets the best they can from their role. Q: You must have seen a huge amount of change over the years. Can you explain how the business has grown and developed? A: This year has seen a number of changes, particularly at the Orpington restaurant, which has undergone a new, exciting transformation following my investment in improving the experience for local customers. Digital innovation is at the heart of the transformation and I have introduced tablets into the restaurant for all customers to enjoy. Customers are also provided with more choice as to how they order and pay, adapting how the food is prepared and served and offering new technological features to create an environment that is even more welcoming and enjoyable. With the new addition of table service, customers are able to order from digital kiosks and now have the option of

having their food delivered direct to their table. The restaurant still has the option of ordering at the till. Q: Has Brexit impacted your restaurants? A: When I’m in the restaurant I am hearing that customers are nervous about the decision to leave the EU, but I haven’t seen any impact on our sales figures. I want to reassure all our customers that even in times of uncertainty, we are fully committed to providing great-tasting quality food at affordable prices. I don’t want customers to worry about anything when they come into our restaurants. Put simply, my job is to make sure everyone has a great experience. Q: What do you think the future holds for McDonald’s and Orpington itself? A: As McDonald’s constantly strives to bring more innovation to customers, the future could see even more exciting features introduced into the restaurant if current trials prove successful. I will always continue to create opportunities, encourage diversity, offer training, facilitate teamwork and reward achievement. Q: McDonald’s does a lot of work in the community. Can you tell us about some of the projects in which the local store has been involved? A: This year we have taken part in a number of community events including litter picks as part of our Love Where You Live campaign in association with Keep Britain Tidy. I like getting involved in these and doing my bit to help keep Orpington tidy! We are just preparing to organise our fourth annual litter event, tackling local community environmental issues head on. Environmental awareness is very important to me and this year my business was recognised through Orpington’s Finest and Bromley awards as winners of the green award and employer of the year. We also sponsor six local football teams with training equipment, kit and support at matches.

Orpington town centre lights up with Christmas cheer he spirit of Christmas really T lit up Orpington when the town’s High Street welcomed thousands of people to celebrate the start of Christmas. The annual Light Up Orpington event, organised by Orpington 1st Business Improvement District, continues to grow and in 2016 saw the largest ever crowds enjoying a variety of entertainment and activities for all the family. Attractions included a funfair and market stalls as well as a main stage line-up, which wowed the crowds with music and dance throughout the evening. The younger customers loved the elf trail and making lanterns, and visits to Santa’s new grotto in the Walnuts Shopping Centre caused great excitement, especially with Walter and Wanda Walnutter, the Walnuts’ very own mascots for children’s activities. After a parade along the High Street with his reindeer, Santa was joined on stage for the countdown by Orpington 1st Chairman Martin Price, characters from the Orpington pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, ward councillors William HuntingtonPictured clockwise from Thresher and Kim Botting, and top left: The spectacular Walter and Wanda. firework display; the Sharon Baldwin, Orpington 1st Harlequin Theatre School; executive director, said: “We are Walter and Wanda delighted that the evening once Walnutter with Santa; again proved to be such a success. Orpington 1st BID manager, Chris Travers, said: “It’s fantastic to attract so many people from across the borough to start the Christmas countdown in Orpington. It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase what our town has to offer and a great demonstration of the strength of the business and resident communities.” The Board of Directors of Orpington 1st would like to thank all the High Street businesses, with special thanks to sponsors McDonald’s Orpington, London Square and The Walnuts Shopping Centre. ADVERTISER’S ANNOUNCEMENT

Local businesses and local lawyers working together HERE are two professions every business needs: an accountant and a lawyer. The reasons for hiring an accountant are fairly obvious but a good lawyer can also provide vital assistance in almost every aspect of your business. By Orpington MP Jo Johnson

2016 – a year of great change he year 2016 was one of great transformation in T Orpington. A huge amount of progress has been made locally and I am working hard to ensure the best outcomes for residents. It was with sadness that we learnt last February of the death of Eric Lubbock, 4th Baron Avebury. Lord Avebury served as the MP for Orpington from 1962-70 and continued to make a significant contribution to public life by sitting in the House of Lords as a Liberal peer thereafter. There was good news in local healthcare as the future of the Chartwell Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital was secured, following a clinical review. I understand the importance of the wonderful care offered on the ward to families affected by cancer. December’s opening of Orpington Hospital’s refurbished hydrotherapy pool marked another important victory for local campaigners and the Friends of Orpington Hospital. It is three years since King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust took over the running of local health services, and it is fantastic to see the outstanding progress being made to secure local provision for the future. The performance problems on the Southeastern network have been a source of frustration. I understand residents’ concerns over the decision not to devolve suburban metro services to Transport for London; however, the Transport Secretary has assured me that the new franchise, which is due to start in 2018, will deliver the benefits which passengers are long overdue. You can be absolutely certain that I will continue to stress

Jo Johnson at the new Supercuts hair salon with owners Pampa and Sourav Dalal and stylist Noelani Lim the importance of fast, regular and reliable services during peak hours for all Orpington’s commuters. It is a great pleasure to watch Orpington town centre thriving with new shops, restaurants and cafes currently opening on an almost weekly basis. Last February’s unveiling of the ODEON, Orpington’s first cinema since 1982, was a fantastic boost for footfall in the Walnuts. The cinema and surrounding development is having a hugely positive effect on the town and I am delighted to see so many family businesses thriving. Thanks to the tireless work of the Orpington 1st BID team, the town centre is transforming before our eyes and is becoming a real success story of which local people can be proud. It remains a privilege and an honour to represent the residents of Orpington. I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017.

A big success for Jack and more fun to look forward to this year rpington Village Hall played host to two very successful and O enjoyable performances of the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk shortly before Christmas. Sponsored by Orpington 1st BID, both the matinee and the evening shows were a complete sell out with more than 300 tickets sold. The audience ranged from babies to great grandparents and the event was very well received in the community. Janet Munro from Orpington, who was in the audience, said: “I just wanted to say how thrilled we were to see the pantomime of Jack and the Beanstalk at Orpington Village Hall. “We all had such a fantastic time and it was so much fun and so festive. All the staff there were in full Christmas spirit, which was lovely to see. It really was a super show and clearly the actors and actresses put so much effort into it and we wanted to say a huge thank you to all you. It really made our afternoon and has Above and right: scenes from the show truly set us up for the festive season.” Orpington Village Hall will be running a series of different fundraising ticketed events throughout 2017. Please watch this space and keep your eyes out for information in our posters, which will be displayed in and around the hall at 311 the High Street near the war memorial roundabout above Explore Learning & Anytime Fitness. Alternatively, call 01689 891828 or email admin@orpingtonvillagehall.org.uk for more information.

Advertiser’s announcement

Property prices stay strong despite uncertainty of Brexit

ALL CREATURES CLINIC — SMALL ANIMAL PRACTICE —

s we start another year, 2017 promises to be A politically interesting with a lot of attention turning towards Britain’s negotiations to leave the European Union. As always with these matters, it is the uncertainty that can cause the most upset and the property market can be particularly vulnerable to such things. Since the referendum in June of 2016 we have seen a definite reaction to the vote with the market taking a breather through the summer months but all Edmund branches are reporting a strong end to the year and we have no doubt that this will continue through 2017. While no area is immune from political and economic uncertainty, we have found that Orpington has remained very resilient through the years, primarily due to its excellent communications, particularly its relatively easy and straightforward commute to London. In addition, a good level of infrastructure adds to what is clearly a very nice area to live. Prices have remained strong in the immediate areas due to good levels of demand, particularly from prospective purchasers moving out of London. Should you wish to discuss either the current value of your property or indeed a full market appraisal with our innovative strategy to market a property, then please do not hesitate to contact your local branch – the Green Street Green branch is based at 3 Brittenden Parade, adjacent to Waitrose supermarket, telephone 01689 850136, or the Orpington branch at 352 High Street Orpington, adjacent to Tesco, telephone 01689 821904. Both offices are open seven days a week and would be delighted to assist you with any property inquiries you may have.

Community news from around the town

Town works to become dementia friendly rpington 1st is working to have O Orpington High Street recognised as one of the first Dementia Friendly high streets in the borough so businesses can best serve the needs of visitors and customers. Over 4,000 people are living with dementia in the London Borough of Bromley – one of the highest rates of dementia across London – and this number is expected grow. People with dementia and their carers want to make more use of local businesses and Samantha Buckland, services but the lack of dementia co-chair of Bromley awareness can often prevent them from Dementia Action doing so. Alliance, and Nicola To address this, local authorities, Fishman, Bromley public services, charities and Dementia Support Hub businesses are coming together via the community Bromley Dementia Support Hub and the development worker Bromley Dementia Action Alliance

(DAA), to make the borough more dementia friendly and a place where people want to shop, do business and engage with their local community. In Dementia Awareness Week 2017, running from 15 to 21 May, Orpington High Street will be hosting a Virtual Dementia Tour Bus. This will give local businesses and public service professionals training in dementia awareness and an experience of what it is like to live with dementia. Businesses and organisations will then be better equipped to serve the needs of customers with dementia and can promote their business as Dementia Friendly. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a dementia friend or how your place of work can become more Dementia Friendly, please contact bromleydaa@gmail.com or visit the website at www.dementiaaction.org.uk/local_alliances/13685_bromley_ dementia_action_alliance. Local business that have customers with dementia support needs can contact the Bromley Dementia Support Hub, which provides one stop access to all dementia support in the borough of Bromley, via the website at www.bromleydementiasupporthub.org.uk.

V22 secures the future for Orpington Priory ontemporary art organisation V22 has secured a 125-year lease on Orpington Priory C and is now keen to hear from the local community regarding the future of the muchloved building. It is urging people to write in with their suggestions and expressions of interest in the Priory, which served as the Bromley Borough’s museum for many years until its closure in 2015, and adjoining former library. V22 specialises in the collection of contemporary art, the production of exhibitions and events, the provision of artists’ studios and creative workspaces and the running of community engagement and education programmes. It is hoped the first artists’ studios in the old library building will open this summer although there is still building work to be done before that can take place. Director Tara Cranswick explained that the organisation had been meeting with various people and organisations as well as local conservation officers and Historic England regarding their aspirations for the buildings, and would continue to do so. “We have also started applying for further funding to do works to the buildings and grounds,” she said. Anyone wanting to get involved, offer suggestions or sign up to receive updates on the project should email priory@v22london.com.

Be alert to scams

Post Office is on the move

rpington residents are being O warned to be on their guard against scammers.

he Post Office is set to move Orpington Post T Office from its current location to create a modern open-plan branch for customers.

A recent con involved one Bromley Borough resident being contacted by someone posing as a member of HMRC and offering a refund on the council tax charge. Anyone receiving such emails are urged not to respond to them or click any links or attachments and report them to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or HMRC. Under no circumstances give out bank details. To help local people, the Metropolitan Police has issued the third edition of The Little Book of Big Scams setting out the 10 golden rules on how to beat the scammers including what to do if you spot one. The booklet can be downloaded at www.met.police.uk/docs/little_book_sca m.pdf.

The new location for the branch is the WH Smith store at 189-193 High Street, Orpington, just over the road from its current site. The new branch will continue to provide the same wide range of services. Roger Gale, general manager for the Post Office’s Crown branch network said that the change would help to ensure the branch was commercially viable into the future and therefore protect Post Office services on which customers in Orpington depend. “Our customers’ needs continue to change and we are responding to that, taking the right action to sustain our services for years to come,” said Mr Gale. The Post Office’s final plans for Orpington have been shaped following a sixweek public consultation. The branch will be in a dedicated area in the store and built to Post Office specifications to include low level counters, PIN pads, hearing loops and customer seating. There will be five serving positions and two self-service kiosks. The last day of service at the current branch is 15 February. The new branch will open on 16 February and will continue to be operated by the Post Office, with the existing branch team providing customer service.
