Welcome to Orpington 1st

By Orpington 1st BID executive director Sharon Baldwin appy new year and a warm welcome to this first magazine edition of 2018.

The town certainly had a busy Christmas period. As well as the increasingly popular Light Up event which saw our largest ever crowds enjoying a great evening of entertainment throughout the town, we also had angels descending and Santas dashing.

In the coming year we can look forward to a FIFA World Cup, a royal wedding and some significant dates to commemorate, such as 100 years since the end of WW1 and women getting the vote - something that can be put to use at the local elections in May. 2018 will also see the continued introduction of new events in the Orpington town centre diary, which starts with a celebration of the Chinese New Year, the year of the dog, at the Walnuts on February 18.

Businesses have been busy, with customers making the most of the services and leisure facilities that we have to offer and unlike other town centres that saw a decline in visitor numbers, Orpington once again bucked the autumn trend with increases year on year. This can be put down to our strength in hospitality and our lack of dependency on retail, reflecting the way in which customers are now using town centres and the importance of the leisure industry.

We are once again celebrating the quality and choice of businesses in Orpington in our Finest competition so please look for the details of how you can show your support by voting for your favourite business or individual.

In the year ahead we will continue to see changes in

the makeup and location of businesses as they battle against the challenges in the economy, as well as challenges presented by the often ageing and outdated premises that are on offer. Changes, refits and new businesses continue at apace, as do planning applications and developments for residential premises and conversions.

Since our last edition, we have welcomed the first residents into Brunswick Square and, as you read this, we should be hearing the outcome of an appeal by McCullochs on their proposed development at Homefield Rise.

The town is in a fantastic location with huge potential and it is our role in the BID to support both our current businesses and encourage new quality investment. We will be working with the local authority to continue the environmental improvement programme and invest in those small scale maintenance issues that fall below the council’s to-do list yet have a direct impact on the quality that we all want and expect from our town centre.

One of the main requirement for visitors is to be able to relax knowing that they have access to a toilet facility. The news that we have all been waiting for, and that I can now confirm, new, modern toilets will be opening in the Walnuts shopping centre in late spring/ early summer.

We look forward to an exciting, if rather unpredictable, 2018.

A tasty treat for local young carers

romley borough’s young carers were given a well-deserved treat just before Christmas, thanks to the Orpington business community.

22 young carers and siblings attended a free VIP breakfast, along with Santa and his elves, at Cow and Pig Restaurant in The Walnuts shopping centre on December 17.

Staff at the restaurant gave all the children, some as young as four-years-old, a free breakfast before a magician arrived to provide the entertainment. Afterwards, the children visited the grotto to meet Santa and collect a gift.

Santa Dash success means festive fun run will return this year ast Christmas saw Orpington’s first ever Santa Dash, organised by Orpington 1st and MyTime Active.

On the first weekend in December, hundreds of suited Santas, big and small, descended on the town centre to take part in the run, which began in Priory Gardens and continued up the High Street before finishing in Orpington's revamped Market Square.

The 2km fun run attracted more experienced runners as well as whole families and those running for the first time.

Dashers took part in a festive-themed warm-up in Priory Gardens led by the Mytime Active team, before setting off through the High Street, turning into the Walnuts Shopping Centre, passing the Odeon cinema and crossing the finish line in Market Square, where every Santa received a souvenir medal.

Orpington 1st executive director, Sharon Baldwin, said: "We were thrilled that so many families participated in Orpington's first Santa Dash. A big thank you to all of those who took part, braving the weather and making it such a memorable event."

Following the success of the first event, the Orpington 1st team will be making the Santa Dash an annual event. Look out for the date to be released nearer to the event and add it to your Orpington 1st calendar to ensure you don’t miss out.

Helping to make your town safer t has already been three months since my last contribution to the magazine, including a very busy Christmas for us all.

We have had some staff changes recently: PC Paul Young and PCSO Marie Archer join the team, with PC Kerr and PCSO Wood

I

moving on to new challenges.

It’s been good to see Orpington High Street busy with lots of customers when I have been there, both on and off duty.

On a personal note, my visits have taken me to ODEON cinema before Christmas - an outstanding venue with loads of choice for food afterwards. It’s lucky I'm up to date with my physical before eating all that food!

Tesco is as good as ever; easy parking and the Costa staff consistently on top form. However, this quarter, my top marks are given to Explore Learning who are outstanding.

I'll promise to visit some other businesses this quarter - I've already got my eye on a couple of restaurants!

Working with the Orpington 1st BID team has given me a new insight into the management and running of business and the High Street itself. It all looks so easy from the outside looking in, until I started to get a flavour for the

logistics and different issues you all face.

It is clear that everyone is stronger with a united voice working to improve the High Street. In the 11 years I have worked in this area it has certainly changed for the better.

Back to policing. The Remembrance Sunday parade was so well attended it reminds me what a superb place Orpington is. My thanks to the Legion for letting us help them in this.

The Christmas lights switch on and the Santa Dash saw big crowds for some wholesome family entertainment. PC Vidamo, PCSO Dervish and their new colleagues have had a busy Christmas and while it would be nice to have a completely crime free High Street I think we all did very well.

As we enter the New Year, we face its new challenges, with some undesirables in the High Street. To that end PC Vidamo and PC Young are tasked with tackling this. I look forward to updating you in the next edition.

Profile: Meet Glenn Crane of Edmund Estate Agents stablished in 1994, Edmund is a leading independent estate agent in the borough of Bromley, specialising in all aspects of residential property.

Edmund’s Orpington branch is located at 352 High Street and is looked after by branch manager Glenn Crane, MNAEA. We spoke to Glenn - a familiar face in the town to find out a little more about the success of his newly-refurbished branch.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

A: I have been an estate agent locally ever since leaving Darrick Wood School nearly 25 years ago and have lived in Orpington all of my life. I have worked with the director at Edmund in Orpington High Street since 2000. I am a Member of The National Association Of Estate Agents (NAEA).

Q: What makes Edmund different to other estate agents in the area?

A: I am proud to be branch manager here. We offer an unrivalled level of customer service appreciated by all – borne out by the high level of repeat business and recommendations we receive. We have a full five star Google review rating and regularly receive thank you cards from appreciative vendors and purchasers. A completely independent agency with four local computer-linked branches, we offer a bespoke service to all of our clients and are open seven days a week. We have well over 75 years’ local property and sales experience, and all our clients have the assurance of knowing that we are members of the Property Ombudsman Scheme, as well as the NAEA.

Q: Describe your typical day as branch manager for Edmund.

A: Every day here is different. One minute I can be valuing a home and offering invaluable advice to a house seller, the next I can be in the office ensuring that a sale completes with the least amount of stress possible for the seller and buyer. I really like the fact that each day can be so diverse I am helping people sell or buy their most expensive investment, and also being there to reassure and assist buyers and sellers as the sale goes through.

Q: What draws homeowners to Orpington?

A: Buyers are drawn to Orpington as the town offers so much. The schools here are incredibly popular, and of course it’s only a short commute by train to London. So many amenities are on the doorstep, and yet greenbelt countryside is close by, too.

Q: What are your thoughts on the recent and on-going developments in the town?

A: It is great to see all the recent redevelopment here in Orpington. The High Street really has been transformedrestaurants, cafes, and shops, as well as the new cinema.

And of course the High Street and Priory Gardens have been host to many fantastic events. I am looking forward to seeing what future developments are planned.

Q: What does the future hold for Edmund Estate Agents?

A: We have great plans for the future here in Orpington although you will have to wait a little while to see what these include. Our offices were refurbished recently and new signage installed. We have plans to upgrade our window frontage soon, too. Also, we have just started using a brand new property software package, which fully embraces the latest technology.

Thousands flock to town to enjoy Light Up Orpington housands of people enjoyed another fantastic festive event in Orpington town centre last Christmas, when the High Street was illuminated with festive lights, good cheer and a spectacular fireworks display.

Record numbers were in attendance for a fabulous evening of on-stage entertainment, fairground rides, market stalls, Santa and his reindeer and an incredible firework finale.

Light Up Orpington, funded by Orpington 1st, has grown to be a key date in the town’s events calendar. Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin said: "It's wonderful to see a great number of our businesses getting involved on the night, and to see so many families enjoying themselves. Last year saw the largest crowd yet."

As well as performances from local theatre schools, circus performers, rising star and Orpingtonian Harrison J Bodnar and a set by Gwen and the Good Thing, the audience were treated to some festive singing from a Mariachi band.

London South East Colleges principal, Sam Parrett OBE tweeted after the event: "Congratulations on another great Light Up Orpington, the town centre was buzzing".

Posting on Facebook, Orpington resident, Tommy, said: "Kids had a great time and we managed to discover some great new businesses along the High Street... it was great to see the overwhelmingly positive community of Orpington."

The night was capped off with an eagerly anticipated firework display. Petts Wood resident Laura commented: "They were the best fireworks I've seen in a long time. Absolutely brilliant."

Orpington 1st BID manager Chris Travers added: "Thanks to everyone who came along and contributed to a fantastic atmosphere, and a big thank you to all our businesses."

From marketing medals to green gongs, the awards highlight Orpington companies for being environmentally friendly, forward-thinking, customer focused and for being the very best at what they do.

Here’s a round up of some of the local and national recognition the town’s businesses have received in recent months.

Local solicitors Clarkson Wright & Jakes had success at the LawNet awards, which recognise and celebrate member firms that demonstrate excellence and innovation in the legal sector. CWJ, based at Valiant House, Knoll Rise, was presented the prize by Jim Smith, director of award sponsors Shopper Anonymous and LawNet chief executive, Chris Marston at an awards ceremony held at Heythrop Park Resort in Oxfordshire.

Andrew Wright, managing partner at CWJ said: “The whole firm is committed to improving the client experience at every point and we have carried out numerous initiatives focused on ensuring the service we deliver matches and exceeds our clients’ expectations.

We are proud that the efforts of our team have been

recognised.”

Proctors estate agents won Best Business for Marketing and Social Media at the Bromley Business Awards held in November. The company, which has a branch at 192 High Street, Orpington, was given the award for its refreshing approach and effective use of marketing and social media.

With its eye on the coveted prize, Proctors submitted a detailed awards entry outlining the company’s marketing strategy, backed with results from its campaigns.

The submission highlighted the work Proctors have done with their marketing agency, Ronion Marketing on social media.

Staff from across Proctors branches were suited, booted and glammed up in gowns as they arrived at The Warren in Hayes. Attendees at the event included local businesses, the Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Kathy Bance MBE and sponsors including the Orpington 1st BID team.

The ceremony, which honours those who work in the office supplies and services industry, was held at the Tower Guoman Hotel in central London, boasting spectacular views of Tower Bridge and the River Thames.

The audience were kept entertained by their host for the night, Mark Durden-Smith, the TV Presenter and entertainer best known for his coverage of the 2017/18 Rugby World Cup, as well as for shows such as This Morning and BBC Radio London’s Breakfast Show.

Local McDonald’s franchisee Bill Perera and the teams from across his four restaurants were named the Best Green Business for the second consecutive year at the Bromley Business Awards 2017.

With a firm commitment to the local environment, Bill and his team

regularly take part in large scale clean-up events as part of the ongoing partnership between McDonald’s and 'Keep Britain Tidy'.

McDonald’s staff patrols the streets at least three times a day to collect all rubbish that has been discarded in the local area, regardless of its origin.

Orpington’s The Salon was crowned Most Wanted Salon at the prestigious London Hair & Beauty Awards, following its success of receiving the Hair & Beauty prize at the Orpington's Finest Awards earlier in the year.

The third London Hair & Beauty Awards was held at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel. Managing director, Stephanie Wisdom said: “We are so proud to be named Most Wanted Salon at The London Hair & Beauty Awards. We were delighted just to have been part of such a prestigious event, so to win is absolutely amazing.”

We are a small friendly day centre in Green Street Green providing rehabilitation, care and support after a stroke, including: rpington Village Hall put on three successful pantomime performances during the first weekend in December.

Aladdin was sponsored by Orpington 1st and performed on December 2 and 3 by the touring company Shooting Stars Entertainments Ltd. The two matinee and Saturday evening performances were a complete sell out within two weeks of tickets being released and were attended by almost 500 local residents of all ages.

Mrs Jo Chapman from Locksbottom said: "It was the first time we had been to a pantomime at Orpington Village Hall and we were so impressed. Our girls, Abi and Izzy loved the show, as well as the sweetie cones, and my husband Neil and I were delighted to attend such an affordable and local event near to Christmas."

Night time is becoming prime time The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has appointed a Night Time Commission with the aim of helping to realise the vision for London as a 24-hour city.

They will carry out research to understand what life in London is like between 6pm and 6am.

They want to know how to make London better for everyone at night. To that end, they are consulting with London residents, evening and night workers, councils, businesses, community groups, public sector organisations and visitors to the capital.

We’ve come too far to let health slide now am acutely aware that Orpington residents depend enormously on the services provided by our local hospitals. As the Member of Parliament for Orpington, I fought hard to ensure that services at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) and Orpington Hospital were retained following the collapse of the South London Healthcare Trust in 2013.

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s takeover of both sites was a significant victory for local campaigners and great news for patients and NHS staff. Both hospitals have been making improvements under King’s management and I hear regularly from patients about the outstanding local care that they have received.

The PRUH’s stroke unit has moved from unaccredited status to become one of the top 20 units in the country, while the strengths of the specialist cancer ward, the Chartwell Unit, were recognised by a clinical review.

Orpington Hospital has undergone a £3.9 million development programme

that saw the creation of three new operating theatres and two new wards.

The hospital has improved dramatically and is now one of the leading orthopaedic centres in the South of England.

I was therefore concerned to learn that King’s has been placed into financial special measures by the regulator, NHS Improvement. This decision was made as a consequence of the significant challenges the Trust currently faces due to its deficit, which was forecast to be £92 million by the end of the year.

I want to reassure residents that King’s chief executive, Nick Moberly, has guaranteed that services at all of the Trust’s hospitals are continuing to run as normal, with the focus on delivering high quality care to patients over the busy winter period. I will continue to work to maintain the provision of strong local health services in Orpington.

Looking forward, I welcome that the Department of Health and NHS Improvement will be providing support

to ensure that King’s progresses onto a more sustainable financial footing.

However, the rapid deterioration in King’s finances is undoubtedly concerning and I have therefore written, jointly with my colleagues Bob Neill MP and Bob Stewart MP, to the Health Secretary to seek assurances over the future of healthcare services in Orpington and Bromley.

Orpington students get a flavour for high-end hospitality in top London restaurants 43 students from London South East Colleges’ Hospitality, food and enterprise college have been sent to work placements at over of London’s top restaurants including Harrods, the Chop House at Butlers Wharf, Skylon at Embankment, Plateau at Canary Wharf and our very own Cow & Pig in Orpington.

One of the most prestigious placements was at Michelin-starred restaurant Galvin at Windows, situated on the 28th floor at London's Hilton Hotel on Park Lane.

Gabriel Innaccone and Joe Cheeseman, both 16 years old, were lucky enough to be placed here and had the opportunity to work alongside Fred Sirieix, who is famous for his role as maître d’ on the hit Channel 4 show First Dates.

Fred is the general manager at Galvin at Windows, which has won a number of industry awards under his leadership.

Bromley resident Jo said, “I’m experiencing the workings of a very high-end and sophisticated business.

“The chefs here show us how to do

certain things correctly and will then watch us do them ourselves; correcting us if we go wrong. After this, we are expected to get it right - surprisingly, this works really well.”

Sous chef, Ben Hobson, who provided supervision for both students, added: “As a product of a vocational education and training myself, I know just how an opportunity like this can be the basis of a very lucrative and rewarding career.

“This line of work relies so much on

your attitude, as well as having an eye for quality and detail. It means working very hard and to be willing to listen, observe and learn. It also requires lots of determination.

All Saints welcomes Rev Robert Parker McGee ll Saints’ Church at Bark Hart Road has welcomed Rev Robert Parker-McGee SR as the new vicar.

He will be instituted by the Bishop of Rochester at a service on Wednesday, February 28 at 7.30pm.

Rob is at present the priest-incharge of Geddington with Weekley in the Diocese of Peterborough in Northamptonshire and before that served his curacy in a large team on the outskirts of Wolverhampton and Dudley.

Rob is also a member of the Society of the Resurrection, a

dispersed monastic order attached to the Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield. He is married to Sarah who is a qualified accounting and HR technician and they have two school-age children.

Before ordination Rob worked as a risk adviser and mill manager. He has a passion for sport and enjoys playing football, cricket and golf when he gets the time. He is a lifelong Arsenal supporter.

Rob says: “It is a huge privilege to have been asked to come and lead All Saints’ Church and I am very much looking forward to sharing ministry with the people of Orpington.”
