Welcome to Orpington 1st

By Orpington 1st BID executive director Sharon Baldwin warm welcome to the latest A Orpington 1st Magazine which I hesitate to say is the autumn edition!

It only seems like yesterday that we were preparing for summer and now here we are getting ready for back to school and can you believe we have already agreed this year’s Christmas event to be held on Thursday, 16 November for those well-organised readers among us!

As a BID (Business Improvement District) led, managed and funded entirely by local businesses, we are voted in for a term of five years. We at Orpington 1st are already in our final year and businesses are now being asked if they want to continue for a second term. They will cast their vote in October and if successful, we will continue to deliver projects, but if they say no then they will all be stopped.

This would mean losing the dedicated police team, which we fund, the cancellation of the Christmas lights, floral display and remembrance poppies, no more events and festivals such as the very successful Big O and Priory Live, no light switch on and no magazine, website or newsletters to name a few.

We hope that we can continue to work on improving the town centre and helping to create a sustainable, viable and vibrant Orpington, so look out for the result on 3 November.

We have had many requests over the last few months to give talks and updates at residents’ meetings and community groups and it has been great to meet so many customers faceto-face. Feedback is always welcome but one concern raised is the challenge we face in providing toilets that can be open to the general public and kept to an acceptable standard.

The good news for all is that the current facility we provide is closing shortly to be replaced by an excellent new provision inside the shopping centre. It will provide baby changing accessible to both male and female, disabled facilities as well as a dementia friendly cubicle.

We are very aware of the need to provide the best service and welcome to all of our customers and those that suffer from dementia are no exception. Businesses throughout the High Street are working together to improve their premises and raise awareness of dementia among their staff to ensure

we really can provide a warm welcome.

This year’s charity golf day held in June was in aid of the dementia hub. Another project we support is the annual photographic competition, which provides some of the excellent photos for our calendar and helps to raise funds for the Mayor of Bromley’s chosen charity.

Engaging the community is important in making the town centre work and we are delighted that the Market Square is soon going to be ready to host more activities and events.

The space will be used as a venue for hosting some of the events in this year’s food festival. Flavours of Orpington will be a week long celebration of the fantastic choice and quality of food available in the town centre and as well as offers from restaurants and cafes in the High Street there will be a foodie Friday evening market with street food and entertainment, a demonstration kitchen on the Saturday alongside the new market and a community lunch with community stalls on the Sunday.

But before that we have the return of the popular Priory Live on Saturday, 12 August – a free music festival brought to you by Nick Barclay and his team at Talking Box in partnership with Orpington 1st.

Now in its fourth year this event just gets better and better!

Charity golf day hirty golfers gathered at Chelsfield Lakes Golf Club T to take part in the fourth Orpington 1st charity golf day.

And at the end of a very successful day, Orpington 1st chairman Martin Price was able to hand over a cheque for £500 to Nicola Fishman from Bromley Dementia Support Hub, who then gave a short talk about the project.

The hub provides one stop access to support for people with dementia and their carers in the Bromley borough including advice and information about dementia, people’s rights, services and access to local support.

The town is leading the way in making Bromley a dementia friendly community and recently hosted events for Dementia Awareness Week.

The golfing event in June began with breakfast rolls and practice nets before players headed off for 18 holes in a four ball stableford competition. This was followed by a delicious two-course lunch of lasagne and apple crumble.

The individual winner this year was Gail Gulvin, while the top team was from Linay and Shipp, which included MD David Robins, and Tommy Barnshaw from Bishop Estates.

Tommy also won the nearest the pin competition.

“There was a broad representation from BID levy payers, investors, tradesmen, shopping centre management and business owners,” said Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin.

Priory Live festival back for its fourth year rpington's exciting music festival Priory Live is back for its fourth year in the beautiful surroundings of Priory OOrganised Gardens, with more fantastic bands and solo artists performing their own music.

by Talking Box events in partnership with Orpington 1st BID, this fantastic FREE event on Saturday, 12 Starts Hill August from noon to 9.30pm has grown each year and is now firmly recognised as a unique platform for original music.

This year’s line up is packed full of an eclectic mix of bands and solo artists such as Hemmingway, Kolo Band, Keval, Wake Up Leo, MotorCycle Display Team, Hometown Show, Substar and Josh Gleaves with local alternate rock favourites Starts Hill topping the bill before the stunning fireworks display lights up the summer sky.

More children’s attractions have also been added to keep the little ones amused along with lovely street food stalls, the festival bar and the return of the acoustic garden featuring artists who have performed through the year at the popular music lounge nights in the Pato Lounge.

The event has once again been sponsored by Orpington 1st, which has worked with the event organisers from day one. Other sponsors include great local businesses Thomas Brown Estate Agent and Chandni Indian takeaway.

Please note festival-goers are not permitted to bring their own alcohol into the event, however, a licensed bar will be available.

Al-Emaan Centre hosts interfaith Iftar l-Emaan Centre organised and A hosted an interfaith ‘breaking of the fast’ Iftar in June during the month of Ramadan.

A total of 50 people were welcomed into the Keston mosque to participate in an evening meal comprising a South East Asian main followed by a selection of Middle Eastern delights, and topped off with a good old-fashioned British cup of tea.

A great diversity was represented among those attending and included the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Bromley, leaders of local Christian,

Jewish and Islamic communities, Bromley council representatives, head teachers of local primary schools, members of the LGBT community, leaders of local resident associations and many others from within the borough of Bromley.

A few words were shared on the spiritual underpinnings of fasting and how a foundation of the Islamic faith is for Muslims to be charitable and act with kindness towards others. This was said in the context of recent tragic events and a short prayer was made in remembrance.

Visitors were given the opportunity to watch the traditional Muslim prayer within the mosque before delving into the meal and engaging amicably with one another. For those who would like to visit the new mosque in Bromley please contact info@alemaan.org.uk.

Flowers bring vibrant colour to High Street rainbow of colour greets visitors to A the High Street this summer thanks to a magnificent display of flowers provided by Orpington 1st BID. A total of 22 flower cubes have been installed along the length of the street featuring a myriad of vivid blooms from white, pink and yellow to blue and purple.

Two enormous flower towers have also been erected outside the entrance to Orpington Village Hall, while pretty hanging baskets and the newly replanted containers in Homefield Rise

add to the colourful scene.

The display complements the attractive planting at the town’s war memorial roundabout and the flowerbed outside Barclays Bank.

Orpington will once again be entering the popular Bromley in Bloom competition with the hope of winning this time after coming runner up twice.

“I would encourage everyone to follow the theme of the flowers by dressing up their windows in matching colours,” said Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin.

Annual general meeting n 13 June Orpington 1st held its annual general OFollowing meeting at the BR6 restaurant in Market Square. a delicious sandwich lunch provided by the college students and an opportunity for some networking chairman Martin Price formally opened the meeting and thanked businesses for attending.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow directors he reiterated that they continued to work as representatives of all levy payers to ensure that the company is run with due diligence and transparency.

He welcomed feedback and encouraged businesses to engage so that the decisions taken are a true reflection of business needs and your thoughts.

He spoke about the opening of the cinema complex and hotel last year signalling the start of the major changes that we have all been talking about for so long.

Changes not only to the physical structure but also to the changes in attitude to the town and its newfound confidence in the opportunities that are opening up to both residents and businesses.

Orpington 1st, which is your company, is the vehicle for businesses to take a leading role in the way the town develops and to ensure that these changes bring with it the opportunities for our collective business community to thrive.

Renew, refresh, vote YES Continuous feedback has been given by levy payers throughout the BID’s current term ensuring that the projects we deliver reflect business needs and expectations.

As we are now in the last year of this first term we have been speaking to businesses to understand the appetite for continuing the BID and for proposing a ballot to secure a second term.

The timetable below sets out what has been happening: March 2017 – BID board – approval to propose a second

term to levy payers April – forum meeting – confirmation of their approval to proceed May – sector meetings – held to establish new priorities for a second term June – AGM – notice given confirming ballot proposal June – business survey sent to all levy payers July – businesses contacted one-to-one to consult on content of draft business plan August – consultation on survey results and presentation of draft proposal September 2017– proposal document and business plan published The confirmed date for a second ballot is 2 November 2017 and ballot papers will be delivered on 6 October, which is the first date that you can vote.

If the decision is NO then the company and all its projects will stop.

If businesses vote YES then the BID will deliver the new proposal and have a mandate to act on behalf of businesses for a second term until 2023.

Shop Safe Radio The safer radio scheme we manage within Orpington has proven to be extremely successful and is set to expand as more businesses see the benefits linking together can bring.

The dedicated police team, which patrols the High Street, also carries the radio and the fact that it provides direct contact with the CCTV office in Bromley offers excellent opportunities for preventing incidents as well as a fast response when necessary.

Quarterly forum meeting The summer quarterly forum meeting took place on 10 July and was once again hosted by Finch House – remember if you would like to host one of the meetings please get in touch.

Sgt Nick Mclaughlin gave an update on the town centre and also discussed the new neighbourhood policing plan, which will see two dedicated officers in each ward across the borough.

Congratulations are in order as the Sgt McLaughlin has recently been promoted and we wish him well and thank him for his support and commitment to Orpington town centre.

As he awaits confirmation of his new posting, we look forward to welcoming his replacement and enjoying another positive relationship.

This has already been put to good use by the officers in assisting vulnerable people.

Changes, refits and new businesses pmarket U bedding, curtain and giftware company Julian Charles has opened a brand new shop in Orpington.

Orpington marks the 187th store opening for this third generation family business, which sells luxury bedding and quality, ready-made curtains, as well as a fantastic range of giftware including the very popular Yankee Candles.

Josh Greibach, retail director for Julian Charles, whose grandfather Julian Greibach started the company in Lancashire in 1947, said, “We’ve been keen to expand in Greater London and have been looking for the right opportunity.

“We are delighted to come to Orpington at what is an exciting time for the town. The footfall here is strong and there seems to be a real demand for a retailer that provides quality and luxury at an affordable price, which is exactly what Julian Charles can achieve.”

The company – originally called Rectella – is celebrating its 70th birthday this year and now employs more than 300 people including the four local jobs.

Masala Dabbas

Orpington High Street is to have a brand new restaurant offering some of the best authentic Indian cuisine in the district.

Masala Dabbas is due to open at the end of August in the former Mystic Brew premises.

By then the building will have been completely transformed into a cool new eating place with a contemporary colonial setting and classic old-fashioned features to complement the vibrant undertones of the delicious food on offer.

The changes will include a new full-length glass shop front, new signage and branding, while inside there will be wooden style flooring, off-white leather chairs and marble-topped wooden tables.

A unique feature of the restaurant will be a hand-painted piece of traditional Indian art adorning the ceiling, while fenestrated panels will reflect the fusion of traditional and modern.

The owners of Masala Dabbas – masala is the Hindi word for spices, while dabbas is the actual spice container – teamed up with retail interior and shop fitting experts Rapeed Design to create the eye-catching design.

A refit of the Boots Opticians in Orpington High Street is now complete.

A spokesperson for the store said: “We look forward to welcoming existing and new customers to our exciting new branch. Expertly Boots Opticians designed, the inspired store layout will give customers a fully accessible environment with exciting new ranges such as Michael Kors and Silhouette.

“The revised layout will showcase the latest young person’s range, featuring products designed specifically for 11-14 year olds and include upgraded consultation rooms, which will offer an enhanced, more comfortable customer experience.”

A formerly empty building near the north end of Orpington High Street is being given a new lease of life as a stylish new Mediterranean restaurant, bar and grill.

The prominent building previously occupied by Gesti is in the process of being totally refurbished to become the upmarket SCALA, scheduled to open this September.

With its open plan design arranged over three fluid levels downstairs and a mezzanine floor upstairs, the restaurant will have seating for a total of around 140 people.

Soft blues and greys coupled with real stone and wood floors will create a relaxing atmosphere in the dining areas, and there will be a wide variety of seating options available. The backroom with its booths and benches will make it ideal for families, while guests will be able to enjoy a drink or a meal at the high tables next to the large windows at the front of the restaurant.

However, one of the most striking aspects of SCALA is likely to be a huge illuminated molo in Mediterranean blue descending gently down from the lofty beamed ceiling to just above the striking circular black marble-topped bar.

Made from paper, a molo is an undulating canopy of soft luminous forms – a stunning interior design feature.

“We are trying to create a very flexible place and make people as comfortable as we can,” explained Salvatore Palazzo, who is opening the restaurant with business partner Giuseppe Coringrato.

He added that they had chosen Orpington because they felt it was an up and coming area and had been impressed by the building. “There is a new development across the road and also at the old police station,” Mr Palazzo said. “It’s a good commuter town with a mix of people of all ages.

“There are young couples as well, Londoners and people who work from home plus good connections to the M25, Kent and London.”

SCALA will be open seven days a week from 12 noon to 11pm.

Olympic runner Dina Asher-Smith, who regularly eats at Hisar with her family and was at the opening, said she loved coming to the restaurant because of its great atmosphere.

“There’s singing and dancing, and this is in addition to its good vibe,” she said. “It’s about being really friendly and having loads of fun. It is one of my favourite restaurants in Orpington.”

Dina, who has just graduated from university and is busy preparing for the World Championships in London this August, added: “It is one of the places people gravitate to.

Festival’s nostalgic trip back in time rpington put on another great show when the town played O host to its third Big O Vintage Festival in Priory Park organised by Talking Box Events in partnership with Orpington 1st BID. The excitement began early with crowds gathering in the High Street ahead of a magnificent car parade signalling the opening of this year’s event.

Classic cars from throughout the decades gave a glimpse of what was about to unfold.

Visitors were transported back in time through the decades, evoking childhood memories for most and a fun history lesson for the younger audience.

The time and effort taken by all those involved to ensure an authentic representation of the fashion and culture from the past was outstanding.

And it wasn’t just the characters such as Mr Bean, Frank Spencer and Dr Who, who wowed the crowds, as many festival goers also arrived dressed in styles from their own favourite era.

Sharon Baldwin, executive director of Orpington 1st BID, which helped fund the event and has been involved in the festival with Nick Barclay from the start, said: “We were delighted to see so many visitors to Orpington enjoying such a great event in such a fantastic setting. This has become a mustattend festival for the summer and showcases all that is good about the business community and residents coming together.”

The sun shone brightly in the afternoon when bands took to the stage transporting the crowds back to the pop culture of the past.

With a fun filled programme throughout the day, the atmosphere was amazing, with local friends and family joined by visitors from around the southeast at this free event – something for the whole of Orpington to be really proud of.

Town’s market will be a community hub rpington is to get a vibrant new market with the O launch planned for 17 September. Owners Rockspring and partners have a vision to transform the market, which will see a fundamental change in the way it looks, feels and is operated on both market and non-market days.

Started in 1990, in its heyday the market attracted close to 100 stalls but has since fallen on harder times, a state of affairs mirrored by many markets across the country. The needs of Orpington’s residents, however, are changing and with new families moving into the area, the market will focus on becoming a community hub with the potential to enhance the local economy by contributing towards a diverse independent retail offer.

The Walnuts Shopping Centre, where the new look market will be located, has already seen a substantial investment into the town with the opening of an Odeon cinema and Premier Inn in the last 18 months.

A total of 345,000 visitors have already enjoyed a show at the cinema and overall footfall is up 20% since the investment, with the Walnuts car park seeing an increase of 40% in occupancy levels.

Improvements to the Market Square are also nearing completion, following a successful joint bid by Orpington 1st Business Improvement District (BID) and Bromley Council to the GLA High Street Fund.

The improvements are part of the borough council’s initiative to improve Orpington’s town centre spaces and enhance the pedestrian experience.

In addition to the public realm improvements to the Market Square, which include new seating, lighting, tree planting and replacing the 1970s fire escape leading down from the leisure centre, the area will provide the features that make successful town centre spaces.

There will be a place where people can meet, eat, shop and relax and where local businesses can test out ideas as well as having strong, well-known traders offering high quality produce that will retain current customers and attract new ones.

Over the summer, Rockspring will be developing a new brand for Orpington Market and investing in new stalls, covers and utilities to provide a modern, fit for purpose market that will work for traders and shoppers alike.

Visitors will be greeted by a market that looks and feels inviting with stalls realigned around a street food area and the new public realm seating to encourage browsing whether visitors are stopping awhile, or just passing through.

The introduction of free wi-fi will allow traders to easily introduce cashless payments, and visitors to the market will be able to virtually browse events and offers, sign in to their social media or book a cinema ticket.

The market’s centrepiece will be a refurbished Citroen HY van immaculately fitted out to operate as a food truck. The popularity of these vintage vehicles has risen significantly on markets across the country as they offer a unique point of sale. A vintage vehicle has the capacity to create attention and perception for businesses and build an audience and the market operators are seeking expressions of interest from businesses that might like to include such an iconic vehicle into a street food offer.

The revitalised market will also feature an area dedicated to new businesses and those applying will be asked to provide a business plan to show the viability of their idea.

Successful applicants will be entitled to reduced pitch fees in the first six months of trading and get business advice to guide them through their first year. As with the market’s other traders, a gazebo will be provided as part of the pitch fee, all branded in the new livery.

To coincide with the launch, Orpington 1st BID is staging the town’s first Food Festival in early September (see story on page 25). It is hoped that many of the artisans and food producers attending the event will be tempted to stay on and make Orpington Market their new trading base.

A website went live at the end of June and anyone interested in trading at either the market or the Food Festival should fill out the online application form.

Applicants will be contacted soon after by a member of the market team and invited for an interview over the summer.

New public toilets will be dementia friendly A special dementia friendly cubicle is to be included in brand new public conveniences being planned for Orpington town centre.

The toilets will be moving from their current location next to the library to inside the Walnuts Shopping Centre arcade, where they will benefit from increased security to help with the maintenance and management of the much needed facility.

“It’s fantastic and it will include a

dementia friendly cubicle,” explained Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin. “We are one of the first dementia friendly high streets in the borough.

“This is a growing segment of our customer base and we want to make sure they are well supported. The oldest population in London live in Bromley and the oldest population in Bromley live in Orpington. We want everyone to feel welcome in this town.”

The dementia friendly cubicle will be bigger in size and include a shower, special signage and lighting that is conducive to impaired sensory perception experienced by people with dementia.

The new facility is due to open in unison with the launch of the refurbished public square in the shopping centre. “It will also support the new market coming in,” added Sharon. “It will all work in harmony, shoppers are going to love them.”

Discover the flavours of Orpington food lovers will be in for a treat when Ltheocal Orpington hosts its first ever food festival to mark official launch of the revamped Market Square in the Walnuts Shopping Centre.

Flavours of Orpington will be a week-long celebration from Monday, 4 to Sunday, 10 September of the amazing choice and quality of food available in the town centre.

It is being staged by Orpington 1st BID in partnership with the new market organisers, Sainsbury’s, BR6 Restaurant’s head chef Jason Main and the Walnuts Shopping Centre.

As well as offers from restaurants and cafes in the High Street, there will be a Foodie Friday evening market on Friday, 8 September with street food and entertainment, a demonstration kitchen on Saturday, 9 September alongside the new market and a community lunch with community stalls on Sunday, 10 September.

“We are hoping the success of this first event will lead to bigger and better festivals in the future,” said BID executive director Sharon Baldwin.

“Hospitality is one of the fastest growing sectors within London.”

The hope is that many of the artisans and food producers brought in for the event will be tempted to stay on and make Orpington Market their new trading base.

As an incentive to artisan producers as well as other makers and creators not usually found on the High Street, the market’s owners are investing in equipment including cold and dry storage and washing facilities. They are also working with the council to provide parking for vans to keep them off the Market Square during trading hours.

An incredible £459 was raised on the day, which will help Marie Curie nurses in the local community to provide free, expert, hands-on care to local people living with a terminal illness in their own homes.

Frances, one of the group members, said: “We had a fantastic afternoon in BR6 enjoying some fabulous sandwiches, delicious homemade cakes and lots of tea!

“During the party we were entertained by Peter Fiorini, who kindly volunteered his time for free to come along and sing for us giving the whole afternoon a great atmosphere.

As well as Peter we would like to thank everyone at BR6 for allowing us to use the cafe and for making all the wonderful food for us.

“Everyone was very generous in their support of Marie Curie knowing that every cup of tea and slice of cake will help support Marie Curie nurses provide more care to terminally ill people in our community.”

Budding artists create their own masterpieces rosecco and paint flowed in abundance at Orpington Village Hall as 48 budding artists attended an art master class led by local artist Emil Nikolla.

The art evening was the third in a series of art evenings to be held at the halls with previous sessions focussing on the works of Monet and Van Gogh.

The most recent event saw an increasing number of potential artists create their own interpretation of Picasso’s ‘Jeune fille endormie’, who all proudly took their canvas masterpieces to hang in pride of place in their own homes.

Not only did the event help showcase cultural community activities, it also allowed Darrick Wood student Laurence Jackson to get involved in the organisation of events, helping to fulfil the community element of his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze. Tasks included helping to source costings for essential art supplies, helping with publicity, developing IT skills, and helping with the preparation and delivery of the event. “It was great to be able to be a part of this successful evening and experience first-hand the type of events held at Orpington Village Hall,� said Laurence.

Profile: Meet the Orpington 1st BID Team haron Baldwin and Chris Travers are the team behind the Orpington 1st Business S Improvement District (BID) and have worked tirelessly to make the scheme a success.

Here they explain a bit about themselves and what has been achieved since the BID’s inception in 2013 and what the future might hold for the town if it is given a second term.

Executive director Sharon Baldwin Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

A: I am actually Welsh but grew up in Bromley.

I trained as a retail buyer with Marks and Spencer and became a head buyer working across all UK and international stores. Having a career that connected so closely to high streets and town centres, it was a natural move into economic development and regeneration and I have worked for the last 15 years on a variety of projects across each of the 32 London boroughs including special advisor for London for the Association of Town Centre Management.

Q: Can you explain exactly what a Business Improvement District (BID) is and what it has achieved for Orpington in its first term?

A: The BID is a private not for profit company that is fully owned led and funded by the local business community, who have come together with the sole purpose of improving their town centre. It provides a structure to co-ordinate and fund projects that benefit the town and in our first term we have been able to negotiate a town centre police team dedicated to the High Street.

We organise, fund and manage environmental projects such as the floral displays in the High Street and the Christmas lights, and we install the poppies for Remembrance Day. We encourage footfall by funding major festivals such as the Big O and Priory Live, and organise Light Up Orpington, the town centre’s Christmas event, as well as sponsoring such things as the photographic competition, pantomime and various charity days.

We have attracted additional income to provide a comprehensive package of business support and training, and we have been successful in a joint bid with the London Borough of Bromley to the Mayor of London to fund the regeneration of the Market Square.

We also run a programme to encourage investment and attract quality development, working closely with agents and developers to ensure that Orpington benefits from this investment.

Q: How would you describe your job as the BID’s executive director?

A: I would describe it as the best job ever!

My job is to support the board of directors in delivering the business plan that was voted on in April 2013. I am answerable to them and they are answerable to the 300 businesses that they represent within the BID area.

My role is to create, develop and deliver projects that help to sustain a vibrant and viable town centre to make Orpington BETTER FOR BUSINESS. It is my responsibility to ensure the company is run with good governance and due diligence, and I represent The team at Primo Caffe

Orpington at a local, regional and national level, ensuring the town has a strong voice.

Q: Orpington 1st is in the last year of its current term.

Why should businesses vote for it to be given another five years to run?

A: The first term has enabled us to build a strong foundation for growth and we have been able to give businesses a stronger voice. The town has gone through a great change but there is much more to come. There is great potential and great opportunity but it needs co-ordinating, encouraging, promoting and looking after. Change needs managing and a BID provides that tool.

Q: If there is a mandate to continue, what do you think the future holds for the town?

A: The future is extremely exciting – people make places and people shape places, and the people of Orpington have come together with real enthusiasm to help their town develop into the place that people want to live in, want to work in and want to invest in.

BID manager Chris Travers Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

A: Born in Cambridge, most of my childhood was split across Ipswich and the New Forest. I moved to Manchester aged 20, where I lived for six years. During that time I completed a BA Hons degree in Music. Alongside studies I ran an independent pub just outside the city centre. I first moved to Orpington in 2010.

Q: What is your involvement in the BID industry?

A: I began my work in the BID industry in 2013, initially as assistant BID manager at the Bexleyheath town centre BID, joining Orpington 1st the following year. In 2016 I completed the Certificate in BID Management through British BIDs, the only formal qualification in the industry. It was a great experience and means I’m one of only a small percentage of my peers across BIDs nationally to have this qualification.

As BID manager, I work alongside Sharon in delivering Orpington 1st’s business plan and I am responsible for a great deal of the day-to-day running of the BID. We’re a small team so working on such a broad range of projects can be challenging but I really enjoy the variety the job entails.

Q: Do any projects stand out particularly?

A: Helping to grow the Light Up Orpington Christmas event into something the town can be really proud of has been brilliant. Our joint procurement programme has saved some of our businesses hundreds, and even thousands of pounds on their bills, which is always rewarding. Developing our town’s website has also been a big plus – www.orpington1st.co.uk provides information on all the town centre’s businesses and shares local good news stories. It’s had well over 300,000 hits in the last year alone.

Q: Sounds like you have enjoyed the job so far?

A: It’s been immensely satisfying to be part of the positive change taking place in Orpington town centre over the last four years. There is fantastic strength and depth in the Orpington business community and it’s a privilege to work on the businesses’ behalf. There is still potential to be realised here and I agree with Sharon – the future for Orpington is tremendously exciting!

Photographic society’s annual show rpington O Photographic Society will once again be staging its annual exhibition later this year.

Members have the chance to display their own Last year’s show work at the event, which will be held at the Orpington Village Hall on Saturday, 2 September.

The society was set up in 1948 and focuses on the enjoyment of photography and improving knowledge through lectures, demonstrations and competitions.

Meetings are held on Tuesday evenings between September and April and there is a wide range of activities to

help budding photographers.

Members can help unlock a new camera’s potential, improve photographs for display or organise them for viewing by family and friends.

Competitions cover digital images and prints and guest speakers make presentations on their own areas of expertise.

Regular discussion group meetings provide training on areas such as enhancing digital photos using software and there are also trips to get out and about with your camera with like-minded people.

The annual exhibition will once again play host to the 2018 Orpington 1st calendar competition, which is run in partnership with the society.

Certainty needed for Brexit deal rpington is a fantastic place to O live, work and raise a family and I am delighted and honoured to have been re-elected as your Member of Parliament at the general election in June.

It is a privilege to represent this area in Westminster and I am very pleased to have the opportunity to do so now for another five years.

It is also an honour to have been reappointed by the Prime Minister to continue in my ministerial role as Minister for Universities, Science, Research, Innovation and Intellectual Property.

This is a cross-departmental role, divided between the Department for Education and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

My ministerial work fits alongside my role as your constituency MP and you will of course find me regularly in the constituency for meetings with local residents, schools and businesses as well as with my colleagues at Bromley Council.

The result of the general election was clearly not the one the Conservative Party wanted to achieve; however, as the party with the most votes and seats, the Conservatives have now formed the new government.

We need to reflect on the mistakes that were made during the campaign in order to move forwards and to that end, I am pleased that Gavin Barwell, who until June represented neighbouring Croydon Central, will now take the role of Theresa May’s Chief of Staff.

A strong plan to move forwards is of the utmost importance and in the interests of both the party and the country.

The United Kingdom needs certainty now more than ever to see us through the Brexit negotiations; that is what

this parliament will now deliver.

It’s time to get back to work after the election campaign.

Street Pastors – helping those in need at night f you’ve been out the weekend Ioncelebrating the High Street anywhere between Tesco and Carlton Parade on a Friday night you may well have spotted members of the Orpington Street Pastor team.

Street Pastors are all trained Christian volunteers, who care about our community and are from local churches. You would be forgiven for presuming they are there to preach but that isn’t the case at all. They’re out to care for, listen to and help vulnerable or needy people who are around and simply be a reassuring presence.

“We believe that if Jesus was here today he wouldn’t be stuck in church but would be out and about meeting people and showing them his compassion and love,” said team coordinator Margaret Travers.

For over 10 years now a team of three or four goes out each Friday night from 9pm until things go quiet around midnight. There are stories they could tell you of helping those who have had too much to drink, or people who are sleeping rough or just keeping someone company while they wait for their bus.

Their training and work is funded by donations from Churches Together in Orpington. So if you see them do stop and say hi!

Town hosts dementia awareness week events demonstrated its commitment towards Orpington making the town a dementia friendly community by hosting a series of events as part of Dementia Awareness Week.

Local businesses, the High Street police team, councillors, carers, health and public service workers came together to raise awareness and experience the challenges faced by those who live with the condition with the aim of gaining a better understanding of how they can meet the needs of their customers.

Organised by Orpington 1st and the Bromley Dementia Support Hub, 30 invited guests boarded the dementia bus for a powerful, interactive experience of what it can be like living with dementia.

Based on 17 years of research, those who took part had their sight, hearing, touch and mobility temporarily impaired to simulate what it might be like for those with dementia to do everyday tasks.

The scheme by Purelake Group was given the go ahead last year by Bromley Borough Council for the demolition of the old depot, which closed in the spring of 2012, and building of 28 new homes on the site.

Called Barne Hawe, the development will comprise eight three-bedroom houses, 19 twobedroom flats and one threebedroom flat.

There will also be car parking and cycle parking spaces available. A grade II listed building fronting Church Hill and used as offices and residential accommodation is not included in the plan.

On the same day, the ODEON Orpington ran a dementia friendly screening of the film, Mamma Mia – the first of its kind at an ODEON in the country.

Tesco in Orpington also hosted an information day with stalls highlighting the support and services available to dementia sufferers and families.

Sharon Baldwin, executive director of Orpington 1st BID, said: “Orpington has one of the largest concentrations of older residents in the borough, who are those most likely to be affected by dementia.

“With this in mind, it is important for Orpington businesses to be aware of the needs of this customer group and understand how best to meet those needs with the products and services that they provide. We were delighted with the commitment that has already been shown and look forward to supporting businesses in making Orpington the first dementia friendly high street in the borough.”

Both the Walnuts Leisure Centre and The Sanctuary Cafe already have dementia friendly trained staff.

Orpington gets a clean sweep O

rpington 1st joined forces with McDonald’s Orpington to give Orpington town centre its annual clean sweep.

With a little help from CD Waste, Sainsbury’s, Nando’s and the Walnuts Shopping Centre, a thorough litter pick of the High Street was carried out with extra effort going into tackling the town’s grot-spots and grubby back alleyways.

Sharon Baldwin, Orpington 1st’s executive director, said: “We are delighted to partner McDonald’s Orpington for the fourth annual clean up.

“The event serves as a useful reminder of what we are all working to achieve all year round – a pleasant environment in which to work and visit.”

Orpington 1st Business Improvement District (BID), which represents 300 businesses in the town centre, has also been working with Bromley Council to ensure street furniture is cleaned and any fly tipped items from both public and private land is collected. “The clean up was also a great opportunity to prepare the High Street for the installation of the flower towers and hanging baskets that the BID installs for the summer months,” said Sharon. “The ‘Look & Feel’ of the High Street is extremely important to both businesses and residents and we all want to create a welcoming environment. We would like to encourage businesses to contact us if there are areas around the High Street in need of particular attention.”

McDonald’s Orpington franchisee, Bill Perera, said he was committed to improving the local environment and carrying out the annual litter pick for the benefit of the town. “I’m proud of my team for their dedication to their local community and I would like to say thank you to each and every one, who volunteered their time, and to Orpington 1st,” he said.

The Rt Rev James Langstaff, who is Diocesan T Bishop, is very interested in urban regeneration and represents the Church of England as a spokesman on housing, and has expressed an interest in what is happening in Orpington. He will be meeting up with representatives from Orpington 1st on Wednesday, 4 October as part of a visitation to the area for a tour of the recent town centre developments and also to meet up with local people involved in the daily life of the town.
