By Orpington 1st BID executive director Sharon elcome to the latest edition W of our magazine and although we are still in the middle of summer, if you ignore the rather unseasonal weather, we are already planning ahead for autumn/winter, so make sure your diaries are updated with all the latest information so you don’t miss out on all the exciting events Orpington has to offer.

It is great to see so many new businesses continuing to invest in Orpington and the latest opening this month and sure to be one of the most exciting will be the Premier Inn, a fantastic new service right in the centre of the High Street, providing 63 bedrooms for your friends and family to stay as well as the numerous business travellers, who can take advantage of the town’s excellent position as the London/Kent gateway with our brilliant transport links to the city, M25 and Kent countryside.

Our summer of celebration started when Orpington 1st in partnership with McDonald’s and the Walnuts shopping centre held our third annual clean-up day on Tuesday, 7 June, which this year was known as Clean for the Queen, and with the help of dozens of staff and volunteers we litter picked the High Street as well as all the alleyways.

This left the town centre in tip top condition and ready for the weekend’s main event – the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration – which The Queen’s coincided with the birthday nation’s Big Lunch, an celebrations opportunity for local people of all ages, who might not normally socialise, to get together and enjoy a picnic.

As well as the numerous private parties held across the borough, Orpington played host to the only high street party, which was attended by hundreds of local residents, who came together to help celebrate this unique occasion on Sunday, 12 June.

Businesses were also celebrating but this time on the golf course, when we once again hosted the Orpington 1st golf day on 10 June at Chelsfield Lakes, a wonderful facility to have in Orpington. The weather was kind and the standard of golf and the competition between players seems to be getting stronger every year!

This year we have decorated the High Street with floral displays in red, white and blue in support of the many national and international events taking place including the tennis – well done to Andy Murray for achieving his second Wimbledon win – to the Euros – well done to Wales for a fantastic team effort – and looking ahead we would like to wish our Olympic team, and especially our local athlete Dina Asher-Smith all the best for Rio 2016, which starts on Friday, 5 August.

A very different event being commemorated this year is the battle of the Somme and early on the morning of Friday, 1 July a very moving service was held at the Memorial, when following prayers from the Reverend Brian McHenry and words from the Deputy Mayor, a whistle was blown at the exact time as the signal was given for men to go over the top at the start of the battle.

The Priory Gardens once again proved an ideal venue for the town’s newly established and growing Big O festival, which was held on Saturday, 2 July. This fantastic event, organised by Talking Box celebrating popular suburban culture through the decades, really does have something for everyone and as the main sponsors we were delighted that such a great number of local residents and visitors were able to enjoy a great day out.

Don’t forget that the town’s next major event is Priory Live, again an event that Orpington 1st is proud to sponsor, to be held on Saturday, 13 August in Priory Gardens.

This day of great music will finish with a spectacular firework display and festival goers will then be encouraged to visit one of the many excellent restaurants in the town centre to complete their day out.

Community group submits plan for Priory’s future rpington Priory O Community Hub (OPCH) has now

Sally Pennington wants to hear from local people of all ages

submitted its business plan to Bromley Council setting out proposals to transform the historic building into a centre for heritage, the community and events right in the heart of the town.

OPCH was set up earlier this year and comprises a team of volunteers, who came together to save Orpington Priory for the future and preserve it as a community asset.

The group had until 20 May to submit the business plan, while the closing date for commercial bids was 27 July.

“We probably won’t hear until the autumn at the earliest,” explained OPCH chair Sally Pennington.

However, the group has already launched a survey asking local people what sort of events, activities and temporary exhibitions would be of interest.

Proposals include a tearoom and washrooms, a shop selling local items such as mugs and Christmas cards, space and facilities for business, community and private hire along with a programme of public events and exhibitions throughout the year and educational experiences for schools. A significant amount of expenditure will also be needed for renovations and alterations to the Priory.

Golf day raises cash for local charity nother successful golf day organised by A Orpington 1st has raised nearly £400 for local cancer charity The MumMum Foundation.

A total of 22 golfers took part in the event at Chelsfield Lakes Golf Club on a gloriously sunny day in June.

The day kicked off at 7.45am with the players tucking into some delicious bacon rolls and the chance of a bit of networking followed by 18 holes, practice balls and a two-course lunch.

This was followed by a vote of thanks from BID chairman Martin Price to those taking part and to the host Chelsfield Lakes, and a raffle.

Guest of honour was Gary Valentine-Fuller, who set up The MumMum Foundation after his grandmother died from cancer.

Mr Valentine-Fuller spoke about the charity, which has raised thousands of pounds to support families affected by cancer in any way it can such as respite care and holidays.

“We are delighted that our networking event can raise money for local charities,” said Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin.

Orpington’s first town centre hotel rpington’s first town centre hotel O is opening for business this summer.

The brand new Premier Inn situated right in the middle of the busy Walnuts Shopping Centre represents an investment of £4 million and the creation of 28 jobs.

Due to start taking bookings from Saturday, 6 August, the hotel will feature 63 bedrooms and a restaurant.

Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin described the new hotel as a “fantastic facility” for the town.

“The board of directors of Orpington 1st are delighted to welcome manager Holly Flann and her team to the town and look forward to working with Premier Inn in the future,” she said.

Annual General Meeting Our annual general meeting open to all levy payers was held at the Innovation Centre at the Orpington campus of Bromley College on Monday, 9 May. Following a welcome by chairman Martin Price, the directors gave their report of the 2015/16 period and set out the priorities for the coming year. Comments from the businesses attending included a request to provide additional support for business start-ups and to ensure a focus on the service and office sector within the BID area. Following the resignation of directors under the policy of rotation, the board was re-elected to office with Martin Price as chair. Chandra Sharma and Danny Cole both stood down from the board.

The directors are keen to hear from all businesses on future projects and would welcome attendance at board meetings of anyone interested in presenting their views on behalf of levy payers.

Helping to make your town safer ver the past two months there has been an O increase in the amount of rogue cold callers visiting people all around Bromley.

The local High Street Orpington team have been holding talks inside the library aimed at helping people to avoid being a victim of scams.

This has so far been very successful and is fully supported by all of the banks on the High Street.

PC Kerr and PC Vidamo have also been engaging with the local youths on the High Street when they have been seen cycling on the pavement and have spoken to several parents, which has resulted in the parents taking away a handful of the bikes.

Several proactive investigations have resulted in five people being arrested for shoplifting and nine community resolutions being issued since the beginning of June.

Orpington 1st BID support the funding of the local police team as part of the ‘Look & Feel’ initiative. The Enterprise Hub also plays host to officers, which allows for easy and direct access to the High Street and on-going communication with the BID team to target business needs and requests.

Street An American themed dessert diner has now opened as part of the Walnuts Shopping Centre’s redevelopment.

Creams is located opposite the new Odeon cinema in the centre and sells everything from waffles, crepes, cakes and cookie dough to sundaes, gelato, sorbets, milkshakes and smoothies.

“Business has been above expectations,” said franchisee Harvey Mann. “We have had some fantastic reviews and customers have been going away with smiles on their faces.”

Creams Cafe employs 40 full and part time staff and has a total of 100 seats including the outside area with its cafe barriers and umbrellas. It is open between 11am and 11pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 11am to 10pm on Sunday.

Twenty-four year-old mum of two Victoria Valiulyte has Victoria turned her love of dogs into a Valiulyte business with the opening of with her her own pet-grooming salon dog Kiddi called Incredible Paws.

Victoria was 14 when her family gained two new members – a Yorkshire terrier and an American cocker spaniel. She began grooming and showing the dogs and soon her friends were asking her to do the same for their pets.

Victoria, who has worked in the industry for five years, went on to gain a City & Guilds level 3 diploma for professional dog stylists and in June opened her salon at 73 High Street, Orpington. “I just wanted to be my own boss,” she explained.

Do you have an eye for a photo? o you fancy yourself as someone with an eye for a DThen good photograph? why not get out and about with your camera and take a few shots for possible inclusion in the Orpington 1st Business Improvement District’s calendar for 2017?

The BID is running a competition in partnership with the Orpington Photographic Society giving local people the chance to win £100 and have their work featured in next year’s calendar.

What’s more, selected entries will go on public display at the photographic society’s annual exhibition.

And you don’t need fancy equipment to enter as compact cameras and camera phones can produce very good quality photographs.

Last year’s winner was Tony Naunton, who submitted a stunning shot of a poppy field on the edge of Goddington Park, scooping the £100 prize.

Tony explained that he took all his photographs with either an iphone or compact camera and had taken the picture for his own benefit before finding out about the competition.

This year’s winner will be announced at the photographic society’s exhibition at Orpington Village Hall on Saturday, 3 September. Entries must be in for judging by Friday, 19 August.

The photographic society meets on Tuesday evenings between September and April and has a wide range of activities to help budding photographers.

There are regular competitions covering both digital images and prints, and Cllr Kim Botting (right) with last year’s guest speakers winner Tony Naunton and his picture are invited of the poppy field along to make presentations on their area of expertise.

There are also regular discussion groups providing training on topics such as how to enhance a digital photo using software, and outings are arranged if you want to go out and about with your cameras with a like-minded group of people. Orpington has a cool new vibe akcaris has M been an integral part of Orpington town centre for many years but this much-loved cafe is now being transformed with a wider range of delicious food and gelato, an exciting and modern new look and a name to match.

Reinvented under the upbeat title of Vibe, when finished it will feature some stunning decor both inside and out using fresh, vibrant colours and a gleaming full-length glass frontage.

“Orpington has changed quite considerably over the last four or five years with the new cinema coming,” explained Hassan Hassan, who runs the company with his brother Nejmi.

It was their father Gursoy – known by everyone simply as Hassan – who first opened a restaurant in Orpington High Street called Popins about 30 years ago, moving to the busy Walnuts Shopping Centre in more recent years.

“Other restaurants 20

have come along and raised the town to a new level,” added Mr Hassan. “The more there are the more people will come out and see Orpington as a great place to visit.”

Vibe will be fully licensed and operate under the tagline ‘gelateria, bar, kitchen’ specialising in freshly made luxury Italian gelato, fresh fruit sorbetto, gourmet burgers and hotdogs, a shish selection and mezes to share.

Other specialities of the house include VIP cocktails such as champagne candy cocktail concocted from candyfloss and champagne.

“We want quirky things not seen before,” said Mr Hassan.

However, he stressed that coffee would still form a very important part of the business with a full range available as usual.

Inside the restaurant will be just 60 seats, including some intimate booth seating, with 80 seated outside. All the furniture is being imported from Italy including the state of the art gelato cabinets. Vibe will be open from 8.30am-10pm, Monday to Thursday; 8.30am-11pm, Friday and Saturday and 10am-8pm on Sunday.

Breakfasts will be served until 11.30am and include some delicious but healthy dishes on the menu with reduced sugar and fat, as well as added protein options too.

Vibe like Makcaris is keen to be part of the Orpington community and with this in mind is sponsoring a football team call All Stars United for under-sixes.

Free music festival now in its third year

riory Live – P the biggest and best free music festival in the borough – is returning to Orpington for its third Starts Hill – year. photo by David Launched in Barnes 2014, the festival has grown in stature and size since then with a reputation for being one of the only free music festivals aimed at promoting new artists, bands and singer songwriters.

Set in the beautiful Priory Gardens and sponsored by Orpington 1st BID and the Walnuts Shopping Centre, the festival is firmly established as a major summer attraction for the people of Orpington and surrounding areas.

This year local bands Starts Hill – with five London headlines under their belts already this summer – and Tiffany Twisted will be mixing it with bands Iron Lines, The Boy Jones, the amazing Feral Ghost, Natalie Shay and her band – Music Week tipped artists – to name just a few.

Artists that have appeared at the recent Music Lounge gigs will also feature on the bill.

The whole show ends with the most spectacular fireworks display at 9pm.

Priory Live is a family friendly festival with children’s rides, hot food stalls and, of course, the festival bar.

After the event, festival goers can head off into town to one of the many venues and restaurants to complete the festival experience.

Priory Live will be held on Saturday, 13 August from 1pm to 9pm.

Town celebrates Queen’s birthday he wet start failed to put a damper on Orpington residents’ T intent on celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday in June and the sun eventually came out for Bromley’s biggest street party in Orpington High Street.

Hosted by Orpington 1st, together with Berkeley Homes, the party was a unique opportunity to bring local communities together to celebrate the Queen’s life.

Visitors were treated to a 1940s themed party including a fantastic line up of entertainment with a swing band, tea dance, magic show, pearly king and queen, The Orpington Band and a good old fashioned sing along.

Activities were provided by Anytime Fitness and Orpington 1st.

Karrina Oki, sales and marketing director for Berkeley Homes, commented: “The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration in Orpington High Street was a wonderful occasion and we were delighted to sponsor the event. Cllr Payne said: “‘I was delighted to attend the celebrations for Her Majesty’s birthday hosted by Orpington 1st in the High Street.

The many people I met were delighted that such an event was taking place, great music, singing and atmosphere, well done to all involved.”

Profile: Jason Main Head Chef, BR6 Restaurant, Bromley College, Orpington campus Q: What’s your background and can you tell us about your work at the college.

A: I trained at South Tyneside College in South Shields and have been a chef now for 25 years and spent the majority of this in high quality hotels in this country and overseas.

I started to forge a career in education about 10 years ago to be part of training the chefs of the future, which has ultimately got me the position here at BR6 restaurant, which I run entirely with the students of Bromley College at the Orpington campus.

Q: What do you think the students gain from working in a restaurant like BR6, which is open to the general public, and what feedback do you get from customers about the dining experience?

A: I have worked in a number of colleges but this is the only one that has totally let me run the restaurant as another independent restaurant in Orpington and not as a ‘college restaurant’. BR6 is a fully commercial operation to represent industry and the standards industry requires, this alone allows me to stretch and challenge the students without the constraints of their qualification and the curriculum.

The feedback since opening in November last year has been fantastic, the students have achieved so much and hopefully learned so much in these past months.

In nine months we now have a successful brand and a flourishing culinary addition to Orpington with more to come very shortly with phase two of our master plan!

Q: What’s your philosophy of good food and what sort of cuisine does BR6 serve?

Jason Main, head chef at BR6

A: Cook in season, use as much local produce as possible and keep it simple.

Q: What effect do you think Brexit will have on the catering industry?

A: I’m still trying to figure out how it will affect me! All I can say without getting too political about it is there are a lot of catering businesses out there with highly skilled staff members recruited from EU countries! Also import/export of produce?

I know I have answered a question with two more, however, whatever happens, colleges need to continue to bridge the already large skills gap between education and employment.

Here at Bromley college, reputation and consistency is of the utmost importance just like industry, and as long as we do this, along with other colleges around the country, the gap will get smaller. The catering industry is resilient, it always has been, and no matter what the outcome we will deal with it like we always do by working harder.

Q: How popular is catering as a profession – is it growing in popularity or declining among young people? Is it influenced by programmes such as Master Chef?

A: It’s a double edged sword really, an increase due to media growth, however, a decline in people sticking at it as a career, a lot are not prepared to make the sacrifice – it’s a career not a hobby! It’s like any profession, if you really want it you need to work for it.

Q: What’s your favourite meal?

A: I’m a Geordie so curry and a pint.

Now in its second year, the vintage festival with a twist once again proved to be a big success with thousands of people flocking to Priory Gardens to enjoy fun and entertainment right through from the 1940s to the 1980s.

Each decade was housed in its own huge marquee so visitors could really immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the different eras.

The 1940s zone featured a fantastic wartime show with a variety of familiar songs from Run Rabbit Run to We’re Going to Hang Out the Washing on The Siegfried Line as well as some fast one-liners from the Burnt Ash Drama Association.

There was also a live performance from singer Kitten Von Mew, who led the fan dance re-enactors, plus a collection of wartime toys and memorabilia.

Over in the 50s zone, Kav Kavanagh and Suzy Q invited visitors to come and learn how to Stroll, one of the biggest dance crazes from that era.

Highlights of the 60s zone included a mods and rockers and cops and blaggers expo, Doctor Who’s Tardis and a giant Thunderbird 3, while outside vintage scooters were parked up, their mirrors reflecting the people passing by.

The 70s and 80s zones brought Punk to Funk to Orpington complete with a clutch of evil looking pirates bringing along their customised vans, classic 70s and 80s cars and a soul and funk party with DJs from Soul Funky.

There was also a full line-up of stage entertainment during the day and the Kino Van was on hand as part of the London archiving programme.

It’s vital to make Brexit work for our country and future n the 23 June, 33 million people voted on the future O of the United Kingdom in Europe. A big decision has been taken – it is now vital that we make it work for our country and our future.

I agree with our new Prime Minister, Theresa May, and the cabinet that the decision of the people must be accepted and the process of implementing this in the best way possible must now begin. There are undoubtedly challenges ahead. We need to unite our country and preserve the best of our relationship with Europe.

I join with the government in reassuring European citizens living here, and British citizens living in European countries, that there will be no immediate changes in their circumstances; nor will there be any initial change in the way our citizens can travel, the way our goods can move, or the way our services can be sold.

As a result of the Conservative’s long-term plan, we have one of the strongest economies in the world. We have low, stable inflation; our employment rate remains the highest it has ever been and our financial system is substantially more resilient than it was six years ago. The governor of the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority have set in motion a series of contingency measures to maintain financial stability, and will not hesitate to take further action if required.

In one of his final acts as Prime Minister, David Cameron made it absolutely clear to the European Council that although

Britain is leaving the European Union, we will not turn our back on Europe. The next government will negotiate the nature of our future relationship, but we all agree that we must seek the strongest possible economic links with our European neighbours, as well as maintain security co-operation and ensure we are in a position to influence the welfare of our own people.

I am glad that, with the overwhelming support of Conservative MPs, we already have a new Prime Minister in place, who can get to work on securing a new settlement for Britain in Europe. There can be no question that, in Theresa May, we have a leader who offers the strong, proven leadership to forge a new role for ourselves in the world.

Let’s hold on to our vision of a Britain that wants to be respected abroad, tolerant at home, engaged in the world and working with our international partners to advance the prosperity and security of our nation for generations to come.

The British people have taken a momentous decision to leave the European Union – now is the time to look ahead to the future and make it work.

Town looks its best for Queen’s day group of more than 30 litter picking A volunteers descended on Orpington’s streets and alleyways to give the town a clean sweep as part of the Clean for the Queen campaign.

The litter pick in June was organised by Orpington 1st Business Improvement District (BID) in association with McDonald’s and supported by staff at The Walnuts in preparation for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration in the High Street the following weekend.

BID executive director Sharon Baldwin explained that a survey of businesses had been carried out to highlight any environmental issues and grot spots that should be tackled.

Discovered in some of the town’s alleyways were numerous items including fridges, mattresses and chairs, which were collected and taken to the dump.

Following the litter pick, McDonalds treated all the volunteers to lunch.

The BID is also funding small-scale maintenance of the High Street to ensure it provides the high quality surroundings needed to effectively showcase local businesses.

“We continue to ask our businesses to come forward with any issues they have that we can help to resolve,” said Sharon.

“I would like to thank all those businesses who are updating their spremises. They are continuing to raise the quality of shopfronts in line with the changing face of Orpington.”

Plans for College Square reach second design stage P

High Street is blooming lovely hoppers in Orpington High Street S will once again be greeted by a riot of glorious colour thanks to a fabulous flower display funded by Orpington 1st Business Improvement District (BID).

This year the display has a red, white and blue theme in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday and also the summer of sport from the football and rugby to cricket and the Olympics.

The BID has also funded some additional hanging baskets and extended the display into the town’s conservation area.
