By Orpington 1st BID executive director Sharon Baldwin eviewed, refreshed and voted for with a great big YES: that’s the fantastic news that your local business community have voted to renew the Business Improvement District, known as Orpington 1st, for a second term.

This means that we can continue to provide additional services to customers, such as this magazine, our events programme and the Christmas lights, making the town centre a more vibrant and appealing place for you to enjoy.

On behalf of the board I would like to thank the businesses in Orpington who have shown such huge commitment to their town and I am delighted to say that the second term, which lasts for five years (from April 2018 – March 2023), has been voted for with an increased majority giving us an even stronger mandate to deliver on behalf of the businesses within Orpington.

What we all want is the town to be the best that it can be. To be a confident and creative town, a town that is enterprising and interesting, a town that is clean and safe, a town that caters for all your needs, provides entertainment and one that is welcoming and is a place that you want to spend time in.

A great example of this is our annual Light Up Orpington event, an evening of entertainment and celebration for the whole family to enjoy. So remember to put the date in your diary, November 16, 4pm – 8pm when Orpington town centre hosts the first Christmas event in the borough’s festive calendar.

And if you want a calendar then why not get hold of one of the first copies of the Orpington 1st calendar, which will be available on the night for a contribution to the mayor’s charities. The mayor has been kept busy with visits to Orpington including invitations to new restaurant openings, charity coffee mornings and the food festival VIP dinner hosted by BR6.

Food plays an important role in the town’s economy and this year’s festival was created to showcase the huge variety and

quality of our offer.

Adding to our current festival programme, 2018 will see the launch of a new children’s festival, aimed at our younger customers but providing fun for all the family. Look out for details on our website.

The website also provides information on the town’s other events such as this year’s panto at the Village Halls on December 2, sponsored by the BID, and the town’s first ever Santa Dash, which is being delivered in partnership with the Walnuts leisure centre on December 3. There is also a directory of our businesses and their special offers, providing you with even more reasons to shop locally.

So this Christmas, whether you are buying presents, pampering yourself, having a night out with friends or family, or just keeping those extra pounds at bay by doing something sporty, make sure you visit Orpington first.

Bishop is back in town ast month, Orpington 1st played host to His Most Reverend Excellency James Langstaff, more commonly known the Bishop of Rochester, accompanied by reverenced Cathy Knight-Scott from All Saints Parish Church and Revd John Tranter, Area Dean of Orpington.

The bishop’s second visit to our town began with a trip to the Saxon Day Centre where he met some of our older residents. Next was a stop at award-winning Valentine and Turner funeral directors, followed by visits to several other premises including the revamped boutique Ladies Choice and Scala before lunch with ward councillors Kim Botting and Pauline Tunnicliffe at Hizar .

Fraser snaps up first prize in our photo competition ocal resident Fraser Gray snapped up first prize at the Orpington Photography Competition 2017, organised by Orpington 1st and the Orpington Photographic Society.

The mayor of Bromley, Councillor Kathy Bance, attended the annual exhibition, held at the Village Halls, to admire some of the fantastic photos on display.

The overall winner was Fraser Gray, who impressed with his beautiful photograph of a butterfly, entitled Spring at Last, taken in Gillroy Way, Orpington. His photo will take pride of place in the Orpington 1st calendar for 2018.

Hearing of his success, a delighted Fraser said: “What a tremendous surprise, I really didn't think my photo would be exhibited, let alone win! I would like to thank the organisers, Orpington Photographic Society, and the mayor.”

V22 secures 125-year lease on the Priory rt organisation V22 has secured a 125-year lease to take over Orpington Priory, Bromley borough’s oldest building.

The company specialises in the production of exhibitions and events and the provision of artists’ studios and creative workspace at affordable rates.

Working with Orpington 1st, Orpington Priory Community Hub OPCH and local ward councillors, V22 has already begun to prepare plans for the historic building and says it has already met with community groups in order to ensure their on-going involvement.

V22 said: “We share many of the goals and visions of OPCH for the Priory and grounds; and we look forward to continuing our discussions with these organisations, as well as meeting further community groups in the area, to develop our vision.”

The site, at Church Hill, is now undergoing maintenance work and the first studios will be ready to open in the new year. Spaces that are self-contained and in a good state of repair will be let out and further studios will be created in the former library building as well as a community exhibition space.

The Great Hall on the ground floor of the Priory will be retained as a community space that will be opened to the public.

Town’s first food festival is a resounding success

rpington held its first food festival, Flavours of Orpington, this summer, organised by Orpington 1st. The well-attended event was a weeklong celebration of the choice and quality of food available in our town centre.

Residents were encouraged to experience something new at the town’s eateries while a food festival brochure highlighted what was on offer in the town’s cafes and restaurants.

Orpington 1st executive director Sharon Baldwin said: “Across the country there has been huge growth in eating out in recent years, so it’s important to recognise the strength and variety we have in this sector as a real asset for the town.”

The festival weekend kicked off with ‘Foodie Friday’, an evening of delicious street food, quality beverages and live music and comedy. A buzzing Market Square provided the venue for a fabulous evening, with wonderful performances from local rising star Harrison J Bodnar, the incredible Gwen and the Good Thing, and award winning comedians, Rory O’Hanlon and Dan Antopolski.

Orpington resident, Stephen Sangster, said, “It was brilliant, a lovely evening – what a transformation. We would have laughed at the thought of doing this five years ago, which shows how far things have come in the High Street.”

Saturday Showcase saw the launch of the Walnuts shopping centre’s new Orpington Market, with a square packed full of traders selling everything from jam and homemade bread to hair accessories and craft beer.

A live demonstration kitchen saw demos from executive chefs Mr Khan and Jason Main, from Chandni Indian takeaway and BR6 respectively, and the teams at the much loved Hisar Meze Bar and Fiesta Mexicana.

On Saturday evening, local councillors Kim Botting and William Huntingdon Thresher were among those who attended a ‘Flavours of Orpington’ dinner at BR6 restaurant, the centrepiece of London South East Colleges’ Hospitality & Catering College at the Orpington campus.

Introducing: our new Sergeant was initially posted to Bromley on promotion in 2006 (writes new police sergeant Stuart Baker).

Prior to this I was posted to Croydon, Westminster and then on Transport at Brixton. I have been based in Orpington on Safer Neighbourhoods since 2007, originally covering the Cray East Ward and am now responsible for Cray East, Cray West and Orpington Town Centre.

Improving people’s attitudes towards the town centre is one area we want to work with local businesses in order that customers will take more pride in the area, which will in turn lower crime. Orpington town centre is the focal point for local people to socialise, and we want a strong police presence on the streets in both the day and night to reassure people and gain people’s confidence.

The local Policing Teams are working more closely than ever with the Orpington 1st BID, local businesses, housing associations and Bromley council to tackle crime at its source and improve the local area. I understand the concerns many businesses have about shoplifting and I expect the PCs and PCSOs to take a robust approach to such offending.

As someone who regularly shops in Orpington I am as keen as you and your other customers to see such activity dealt with.

I

Policing powers designed to address anti-social behaviour have been used to great effect in recent months and I will look to see these used at every opportunity to deal with unacceptable behaviour and offenders in the local area.

They include Dispersal Zones, which enables us to issue a notice to leave a specified area or face arrest. Community Protection Notices can be issued to address specific unacceptable behaviour. If breached the person can be placed before the Magistrates.

The Criminal Behaviour Order replaces the ASBO and is issued on conviction. Any breaches and the person will be placed before the Magistrate. It also allows for publication of breaches by juveniles on conviction.

There are a number of different options available which we can use to do our part to improve the experience within Orpington and you will quite rightly look to the Town Centre Team to work with you to deliver. I look forward to working with the Orpington 1st BID and local businesses to improve the area and the experience of all those who visit our town centre.

Profile: Meet Surinder Singh of Manak Solicitors ased at 265 High Street Orpington, and with additional offices in Gravesend, Kent, Manak Solicitors is a dynamic and forward-thinking firm of solicitors which specialises in conveyancing, family, immigration and probate matters. We discover the secret of the company’s success from Surinder Singh, managing director.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

A: I was born in May 1969 in a small village in Punjab, India, the younger of two brothers. We came to the UK in June 1982 - at that time I was 13-years-old and spoke no English whatsoever.

I joined the English education system in September 1982 in the third year of a secondary school in Woolwich, eventually graduating with a law degree from a university in Birmingham.

I live in the local area with my wife and three children who are aged 18, 15 and 10-years-old.

Q: How did you come to open Manak Solicitors in Orpington?

A: After arriving in the UK, my home became London.

However, in December 1995 I was forced to move to Derbyshire to secure a job with a firm of solicitors based in Derby with whom I eventually trained and qualified as a solicitor in May 1999.

Throughout this period I regarded London as my home town and intended to start my own practice there as soon as the rules allowed. Under the SRA rules you have to have at least three years post qualification experience before you can start on your own.

As I qualified in May 1999, the earliest I could start on my own was May 2002. At the beginning of 2002 I began looking for opportunities in London and came across a small practice in Orpington called Charles Whiting Solicitors.

I joined this practice on July 1, 2002 as an associate solicitor and by Christmas I negotiated the deal to take over the firm. On February 3, 2003 we started trading as Manak & Whiting Solicitors, which in 2008 converted to Manak Solicitors LLP. As they say, the rest is history!

Q: What makes Manak different from other solicitors in the area?

A: Ultimately, we pride ourselves on providing traditional High Street services, but at a high standard in a modern style and setting. We are a versatile and dynamic practice, using the latest technology to enhance our efficiency and quality of work.

I operate an “open-door” culture at Manak, encouraging clients and staff alike to informally discuss issues as and when they arise, ensuring the smooth running of the business and an engaged team.

We have grown a lot over the years and I’m particularly proud that we have retained a great many people for long periods of time. My secretary, Denise, has been with me for 13 years, and we have three solicitors in the business who actually trained with us - two of whom are now directors.

Q: What are your thoughts on the recent and ongoing developments in the town?

A: I’m very happy to see the continued investment coming into the town - more housing and infrastructure can only have a positive impact for all of us in Orpington.

I remember prior to the establishment of Orpington 1st the town almost being treated as the ‘Cinderella’ to Bromley - less investment, less council support and seemingly less of a priority.

We’re now in a position where Orpington is a real focus for the borough, with a lot of positive attention on the town and as a result local businesses are flourishing.

The Berkeley development has been a real catalyst and something I’ve kept my eye on as Manak have helped a number of buyers with their conveyancing. It has enabled us to build great relationships with new clients coming into the area, and also Berekely.

It’s exciting to see so many great businesses come into the town, particularly the restaurants! I’m not really a film man but I do like science fiction and therefore am looking forward to seeing the latest Star Wars film at the new Odeon!

Q: What does the future hold for Manak Solicitors?

A: We hope to continue to serve, and build, on the loyal client base established in Orpington over the last 14 years.

We opened a second office in Gravesend in 2013 which has been very successful.

Earlier this year, Pumfrey & Lythaby Solicitors, a local firm established in the 1972 closed down in the High Street. We were able to take on many of their staff including the senior partner David Smith - a great coup for us. We are always looking at ways to keep ahead of the competition and expand further into new territory, so watch this space!

Orpington enjoys the sound of music rpington was alive with the sound of music this summer, when thousands enjoyed a glorious afternoon of entertainment in the town centre’s Priory Gardens.

Returning for its fourth year, Priory Live Festival has a growing reputation for featuring original music from across the South East. Top of the bill this year were Orpingtonians Starts Hill.

Orpington 1st executive director, Sharon Baldwin, said: “The festival provides a brilliant platform for emerging talent and it’s great to be attracting visitors from across the region to showcase everything Orpington has to offer.”

Michael, 28, from Bromley, said: “This is the first Priory Live I’ve been to and I’m super impressed.

The music has been great and there’s been a brilliant atmosphere all afternoon. We’ll definitely be coming back.”

Nicky Barclay of organisers Talking Box added: "It just seems to get better every year: the bands, the fireworks the crowd - all amazing.

“And to see a local band smash the headline slot was a revelation. Massive thanks to Orpington 1st for supporting us on our journey.”

Following a busy first few weeks, SCALA is now taking bookings for the festive period with Christmas party three course lunch and dinner menus starting at £18.95.

Bookings can also be made for Christmas day lunch which includes dishes such as smoked salmon and crab salad, Greek filo pastry parcels and Mediterranean style salmon supreme, as well as traditional roast turkey served with chipolata sausages wrapped in pancetta.

Diners are also invited to see in the New Year with a live DJ and a three course set menu.

SCALA is open seven days a week from 12 noon to 11pm.

The striking interior features a circular bar area where customers can enjoy a menu of world-class wines, cocktails and classic small dishes - the perfect place to meet with friends or to unwind on the way home from a busy day at work.

The Mediterranean blue and white theme continues to the back room of the restaurant where there is ample seating, including leather-upholstered booths, ideal for families and group bookings.

“The mezzanine, with its own bar, can be hired for private functions and events,” explains Giuseppe’s business partner, Salvatore Palazzo.

British steak restaurant Cow & Pig has opened in The Walnuts shopping centre. The Cow & Pig restaurant, which sources local ingredients for modern British dishes, is styled with wooden walls, fake grass panels, cow hide seating and even an indoor tree. The upmarket eatery serves snacks at the bar area and main meals cooked in view of diners through the kitchen hatch.

At its grand opening, attended by the mayor Councillor Kathy Bance MBE, owner and chef Gavin met with special guests to tell them about Cow & Pig’s locally sourced ingredients, such as cheeses churned in a cave in Sevenoaks and meat selected from local farms. The Travelling Trends event was sponsored by Orpington 1st, which lent display boards to section off an area for changing rooms, and The Salon hairdressers, who volunteered to style the models’ hair.

Other sponsors were makeup artist Cheryl Higgins, who generously gave the glamorous models a makeover, as well as providing raffle prizes and goody bags, and Jane Knight of Successful Mums, who modelled for the show.

Regular visitors at Orpington Village Hall classes were also there to strut their stuff on the runway, including Rachel, from Tai chi, Val from the over 60s club and 16-year-old Raphaella.

The fun event raised £350 towards a new ambient lighting system to improve the facilities.

Keeping up the fight for better rail services he difficulties faced by passengers travelling on the Southeastern network are well documented.

T

confident that this additional rolling stock will help to alleviate some of the overcrowding that commuters experience.

I hear from constituents about how delays and cancellations affect their lives, disrupting working patterns and limiting the amount of time they are able to spend with their friends and family. I have continued to campaign for fast, comfortable and reliable rail services to and from the five stations in the Orpington constituency.

Performance and reliability has also improved in the last year, which is reflected in increased satisfaction ratings among passengers travelling on Southeastern trains. Southeastern have put these developments down to factors including their £70 million investment programme and an improved working relationship with Network Rail. While this is, of course, good news, it is important to note that Southeastern’s satisfaction ratings remain a long way behind a number of other operators, with much room for further enhancements to be made.

I have cautiously welcomed recent developments, in particular the announcement that Southeastern are to introduce additional carriages across some of their busiest services. Starting this month, longer trains will call at Chelsfield, Knockholt, Orpington and Petts Wood stations during peak hours, meaning more seats and more space for passengers on metro services. I am

As regular passengers will be aware, at the start of the summer the Department for Transport (DfT) conducted a consultation process on

the future specification for rail services on the South Eastern network. The current franchise, which is held by Southeastern, expires in December 2018 and the DfT has begun the competitive process for assigning the next operator of the service.

Four rail operators are in the running and I am pleased that a competitive process will take place in which bidders will have to show how they will enhance the service.

I will follow this process closely in the coming months to see that we have an operator that is willing and able to deliver the tangible improvements that are required to restore passenger confidence in local services.

BR6 students serve up tasty treats tudents in Orpington catered their first external event at an opening of new apartments and family homes.

The team from student restaurant BR6 served a menu of canapés, including Devon crab with mango and coriander salsa and watermelon and feta skewers with rocket pesto, at an evening reception at London Square’s Orpington development on Starts Hill Road.

The restaurant is part of London’s first Hospitality, Food and Enterprise Career College and is currently rated as Orpington’s favourite eatery on TripAdvisor.

London Square Orpington comprises a collection of 32 one and two bedroom apartments and 58 private three and four bedroom houses.

Sharon Baldwin, executive director at Orpington 1st, said: “Orpington has an emerging foodie scene and BR6 is one of the great talents at the heart of this. It was a pleasure to speak with

perspective purchasers about our town and all that it has to offer.

Head to All Saints for community carol service community carol service will be held at All Saints' Church, Bark Hart Road, Orpington, BR6 0QD at 7pm on Tuesday, December 12.

The service celebrates all the public and voluntary work in the Orpington community within a carol service anticipating the birth of Christ at Christmas.

It will be attended by the mayor of Bromley and a collection will be given to the mayor's charities, the Bromley Homeless Shelter and Bromley and Croydon Women's Aid. There will be some seasonal music from the children of Blenheim School, as well as the church choir. Everyone is very welcome to attend the service, which will last about 50 minutes and be followed by refreshments in the church hall.

Ward councillor’s promotion ongratulations to Cllr William Huntington Thresher, your local ward councillor, who has been made the new portfolio holder for the environment.

He replaces Cllr Colin Smith who has become the new leader of Bromley council, following the recent resignation of Cllr Stephen Carr. Orpington 1st looks forward to working with both Councillors in their new roles in our endeavours to improve the town centre for both residents and businesses.

LFB Fire Cadets is a uniformed youth organisation running out of Orpington Fire Station, delivered one evening per week during term time for 3 hours per session.

The Fire Cadet programme gives young people to opportunity to increase their knowledge of fire safety and empower them to educate their family and friends, enhance key citizenship skills and build confidence, as well as develop transferable practical skills for future training and/or employment. Every young person who takes part in the programme works towards gaining a nationally recognised qualification, plays a supportive role in their local community, and works in partnership with other uniformed youth organisations representing London Fire Brigade, enabling them to develop positive peer relationships.
