ORMTC PRESIDENTS REPORT - OCTOBER
Once again, my apology to ORMTC Committee and membership for my October Club Meeting absence due to site work commitments. I leave the meeting in our capable committee hands and look forward to reading the minutes upon my return. Thanks in advance to the committee and membership for assisting.
The Committee has prepared the ORMTC service award pre-requisite proposal, I’m hopeful hard copies can be distributed amongst attending members at the October meeting or emailed to non-attending members, for feedback. Member ideas and comments will be consolidated, and a final guideline presented / voted upon at a future meeting. Perhaps by early next year.
The Committee has complied new Constitution versions (with comments) however are yet to merge a final revision, anticipated before the November Club meeting. A hard copy will be available to pass around, and a copy emailed to all financial members for feedback and comment, bearing in mind we need to comply with the Associations Act 2015. Once agreed and voted at a “special resolution” we will be able to submit to the Department of Mines for review. I hope to have this in place before our March 2024 AGM, and I extend my gratitude to the Committee members involved with the arduous task.
Enough of the formalities, and onto the awesome ride lead by Rusty with Peter and Sue as TEC that headed to Cervantes for a lovely seafood lunch at the Lobster Shack. It was such a nice day to sit by the beach enjoying the amazing food and beachside atmosphere. Mark and Deena joined us, (or us them) to share recent travels and their plans for 2023 and 2024. ORMTC wish them both the best of luck and good fortune with their next journey. Stay safe Mark and Deena.
I’m going to miss Rusty’s October meeting long weekend ride report up to Wave Rock but look forward to reading about it in the October magazine. I hope a great time was had by all who attended. I spent the long weekend up at East Bowes pulling a few cray pots and enjoying some offshore fishing.
Page 3
There were a few last minute contributions to the magazine this month, but I’m grateful for them since otherwise there would be almost nothing new to publish . So much so that when Chris hoped some hard copies of the Service Award proposal might be distributed at the meeting, I decided to publish it in the magazine instead.
You’ll find Suzie’s photos from the long weekend and a little write-up about it too.
The September minutes came through late last night along with the August minutes that didn’t make it into last month’s magazine.
Unfortunately I didn’t have time to update the points table.
Finances
Now that the trophy expense is out of the way, I’ll be arranging my reimbursement (via cheque) of the last of the genuine toner cartridges. So expect to see the balance drop next month.
Club Balance $1,925.84

ORMTC – Service Award Proposal
At the September 2023 ORMTC Club / General meeting, the motion to abandon the award of new Life Memberships and offer a “club service award”, was voted and accepted by the ORMTC membership. The motion was raised and voted upon within ORMTC current by-law requirements. The passed motion will be documented in the October Club magazine.

Membership feedback:
• No expectation that one will be awarded each year.
• Recipients of this award must go considerably beyond that baseline standard of commitment.
• By public nomination and vote, there is the potential for the award to be conferred lightly, or offence taken if a nomination doesn't carry.
• It's possible that the tenure requirement will mitigate this, not sure what the correct procedure should be, so open to ideas here.
Service Award Name
1. Peter Hubach ORMTC Exemplary Service Award
2. Peter Hubach ORMTC Honorary Member Award
3. Peter Hubach ORMTC Service Award
4. ORMTC Exemplary Service Award

Each club ride starts as two members step up as Ride Leader and Tail End Charlie. Unless you’ve already organised a ride you will know that there’s not much to it, but for those concerned about trying it, the following should help you understand
the finer details of
Organising a Ride.
Plan the route. The first step for most ride organisers will be maps and a destination idea. You most likely have an idea of the full distance your ride will travel and will have decided already if you intend the ride to be an overnighter. Using your maps you can draft track notes or a ride route that you will follow on the pre-ride. You can add up the kilometres of each leg of the trip and start to identify potential toilet stops, fuel and food stops. A good guide distance for a leg stretch of any description is about 100km but you can vary this to fit in with your ride.
Go on a pre-ride. This is to check the route you’ve chosen actually works. It is an opportunity to improve your track notes with distances and times between stops, discover points of interest, photo opportunities or good break spots and to become familiar with the road junctions you will be using. Judge travel times based on what the TEC will be able to do on the day and fuel stops to account for the smallest range, e.g. 180km. The pre-ride can be an ideal time to stop and take photos to include with a few more taken on the club ride day. On your pre-ride remember to check if the café you visit will be open on a Sunday and get a phone number to call through a booking (e.g. for 10) on the day of the ride if you think it might get busy.
Inform the Tour Master. Rewrite your track notes and forward it to the Tour Master who uses this information to ensure consecutive rides aren’t coincidentally travelling the same route. The Tour Master may need to arrange a fill-in Leader or TEC for the ride at short notice if for any reason one cannot make it.
Inform the Editor. Create a flier for your ride and forward it to the Web Master once the previous ride has finished and the magazine editor by the submissions cut-off date, Monday one week prior to the club meeting. An A4 page is best including all the information members will need to attend your ride. You may keep the route secret if you wish or you can specify as much information as you like. Importantly, you must include the start location, start time and date, total distance to be covered and identify Ride Leader and TEC.
At the meeting. Receive the running sheet from the Secretary. Receive the TEC bag from the previous rides TEC. During the Tour Master report tell the members about your ride and encourage them to join you, fill them in on any last minute information they might need to know and anything different to what you see printed in the magazine. You might wish to get an indication of the number of people going on your ride or you might need to get firm numbers to make a booking for accommodation if that is your ride.
Page 10 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club October 2023
On the day. Be on time for your ride, if you’ve stated “arrive 8am for 8.30 departure” then one of the organisers should be there by 8am sharp.
Ensure Tail End Charlie has brought the TEC bag just in case mechanical or first aid situations arise during the ride.
Invite visitors to include their email address on the running sheet so that we can follow up and invite them to come along on future rides.
Emergency contact numbers for everybody should be recorded. For this reason the running sheet would best ride with the TEC.
The club Riot Act must be read aloud at the start of the ride, it is printed on the back of the running sheet.
If you need to make a booking call before you leave to confirm numbers.
Delays. The Tail End Charlie is most likely to catch up to an incident before the Ride Leader is made aware. The TEC has the bag containing mechanical and first aid equipment although the TEC themselves may not know how to use it. For anything but the shortest delays it is usually best to despatch a rider to inform those waiting ahead, including the ride leader. Depending on the situation, the ride may need to separate to make sure no rider is left stranded alone.
Following the ride. As soon as possible after the ride the running sheet should be posted in the envelope provided so that the Secretary can update the points table for the magazine. Any photos you’ve taken should be forwarded to the Web Master and Editor so that they may be included in the photo gallery on the club web site. If you choose to write a report you can insert your pictures into your article or forward them separately for the Editor to choose.
General ride information.
Monthly Club Run. This can be hundreds of kilometres in a day, a midnight ride, camping or overnight motel, or perhaps a few nights away on the border run. Anything that you would class as touring the open road on a motorcycle. The ride can be to a particular destination or event or just for the enjoyment of the road. If you are planning an overnighter investigate contact details for camping grounds, motels or other accommodation and suggest restaurants or café meal options. If your trip involves camping only, make sure everybody knows where your last opportunity for supplies will be, e.g. bottle-shop.
Social Ride. Intended to be shorter and to provide more social interaction than the monthly Club Run. Preferably the social ride will be arranged to attend some social event or activity. Families can be invited to meet at the destination of the social event so it’s not only for the riders. The ride part should be kept quite short, 100-150km return will usually suffice.
Previous examples of Social Rides include a barbeque at the beach, a visit to the aviation museum at Jandakot and Xmas in July at Serpentine.

Here's A short run down and some pics from the long weekend social ride to Hyden and Wave Rock. The small group, 3 bikes Rusty & Julie, Hans and Peter & Suzie met at Midland McDonald’s and left at 8am for morning tea at York, where we were to meet Jason.
After a nice stroll in York we continued onto the lunch stop at Corrigin via Quairading where we stopped to fill up and Hans decided to ride home.
October 2023 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 13
We lunched at Corrigin Hotel which I would recommend nice beer garden and good food too. Jason joined us there and we then continued to have a great ride through to Hyden. We stayed at the Silo's which had queen bed units with their own shower/toilet not big but very comfortable and clean. We all walked to Wave Rock the next day and then came back and rode to Mulka's Cave and Humps. We had dinner in Hyden where it was a cook your own bbq.
The ride home via "The Tin Horse Hwy", (eventually) was fabulous. We all had a wonderful weekend.
