Johnson, who says she was one of the first female police patrol officers in New York City, has been swimming since she was told to start by a doctor to help with back problems. Signing up for the games along with Johnson was Mary Lenihan, who said swimming is great for her arthritis. “The Senior Games show that no matter what age, keeping active makes you healthy in mind, body and spirit,” she said. Gus Sotir, volunteer chairman for the event that goes through Oct. 29, welcomed the crowd at the ceremony, announcing there were 280 athletes signed up. The games include tennis, basketball shooting, golf, track and field, swimming, bowling, table tennis and several other sports. Pat Grove, of Ormond Beach, was at the pickle ball event on Oct. 24 and said the best part of pickle ball was meeting all of the people. “You make lifelong friends,” she said, laughing and putting her arm around the shoulders of playing partner Barb Donahue, of Palm Coast. ome families spend quality time around the dinner table. Others use their creative skills to replicate a restaurant kitchen where the chef cooks human legs for dinner. Chrissie Kimble has been a haunted house visionary since 2012, when she created a creepy experience for the students of Pine Trail Elementary out of an unused portable. When the Volusia County School District took the portable back, students were left without a haunted house — until Kimble’s father, Jerry Janaro, stepped in. “She had all these decorations they weren’t going to use,” said Janaro, who’s on the board of Ormond Mainstreet. “So I presented it to Mainstreet, and now I’m the chair of the haunted house.” Chrissie Kimble helps supply all the decorations and come up with the spooky characters for the house. Janaro assists his son-inlaw, Ken Kimble, build the maze out of PVC pipe inside one of the vacant stores in the Granada Plaza. The Kimble kids, 10-yearold Delaney, 9-year-old Lucy and 5-year-old Finn, dress up as characters and do anything else they can to help out. “Ken is very creative with the lighting and the pipes,” Janaro said. “There are hundreds that go together to make this thing, and he’s able to knock it out pretty quick. The proposed Bike Plan would result in a network of paths.

he City Commission will consider a proposed Bike Plan developed by the Planning Department that includes 15 miles of multiuse paths. The hearing is tentatively set for the Nov. 1 agenda. Planning Director Rick Goss has met with neighborhoods that would be affected by bike paths as well as the Quality of Life Board and Public Works Advisory Board in drafting the plan, which is expected to cost between $4.3 million and $5.7 million. If the City Commission approves the Bike Plan, it does not mean construction would start, but having a plan makes it easier to get grants from government agencies. “We’ve asked for grants before, and they asked us if we had a plan,” Goss told the Planning Board at a meeting where they recommended approval. Goss said there would be a significant health benefit in having bike paths, due to the fact that Ormond Beach has a higher per capita bike crash rate than other cities in Florida. The predominant type of crash is a “rightangle” type of crash where a car or bicycle does not yield a right of way at an intersection. Accident reports indicate that wrong-way riding and sidewalk riding are contributing factors, because

they put the bicycle where the driver does not expect them. The Bike Plan, which grew out of a 2015 City Commission strategic planning workshop, would include paths for advanced riders who ride on the street, adults who prefer designated bike lanes or wide shoulders, and families and children who use neighborhood streets to get to parks or multiuse paths. The paths in the proposed plan would include new multiuse trails and bike lanes in roads to connect various points in the city. If the Bike Plan is on the Nov. 1 City Commission agenda, the entire Bike Plan will be included in the agenda packet, available on ormondbeach.org. Several plans are outlined, but final design of any bike plan will depend on neighborhood meetings. “We won’t know the alignment until the design phase,” Goss said. One planned trail has raised concerns of residents who don’t want it crossing behind their houses. Sean Daly, of Northside Drive, expressed concerned at the Planning Board meeting about a proposed bike path that goes behind the Northbrook subdivision. He said he is concerned about the disruption of wildlife and the introduction of people into the neighborhood who might do things that would be inappropriate in public. He said the residents don’t need the path because they ride on the sidewalks. Goss said there will be neighborhood meetings before any plans are finalized.

Loads of trouble Almost 3,000 truckloads of debris have been picked up.

CONTRACTORS

If citizens hire a contractor for tree removal services, the contractor is required to remove the debris from the property and properly dispose of it. GATED COMMUNITIES

For private roads and gated communities, the Federal Emergency Management Agency requires prior approval before agreeing to reimburse the community for the removal. It is estimated that the cost for picking up debris in the city’s 16 gated communities will be $636,207.14. FEMA pays 75% of the cost for debris pickup, and the state adds 12%. At the Oct. 18 City Commission meeting, City Manager Joyce Shanahan asked the commissioners for the OK to go ahead and pick up the debris and negotiate with FEMA at a later date. She has already sent a letter to a federal coordinating officer. “It’s a matter of health and safety for the residents,” she said. The commissioners voted unanimously to have the debris picked up.

REGULAR WASTE PICKUP

Bagged yard waste (grass clippings and leaves) continues to be picked up by Waste Pro on Wednesdays throughout the city. Each bag cannot exceed 60 pounds. For questions, call Waste Pro at 788-8890 or the city’s Public Works Department at 676-3220. CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS

debris, according to a city spokeswoman. If the materials are mixed, the entire pile will not be collected until the first pass of vegetative debris collection has been completed. As the special trucks are collecting branches and similar vegetative debris, Waste Pro is collecting construction materials. For the safety of all vehicles and for emergency vehicle access, roads may not to be blocked with any type of debris, and debris for collection must be kept on residents’ property.

FACTS AND FIGURES As of Oct. 24, 2,977 loads of debris had been collected (138,645 cubic yards) in 15 days in Ormond Beach. Crews also removed 84 leaning trees and 2,709 hanging limbs. For comparison, Palm Coast had collected 52,020 cubic yards.

Debris removers are working on a grid system throughout the city of Ormond Beach. The trucks began on the beachside working east-west, then north-south on intersecting streets. City officials estimated on Oct. 20 that it would take up to 20 days from that date to complete the first pass, and perhaps longer in the hardest hit areas of the city. A second pass will then be conducted. A city spokeswoman said the city is aware that more material is being placed at the curb after the first pass. The city’s contractors, DRC and Crowder Gulf, have a total of 21 trucks to collect debris from the rights of way. The map above shows where a first pass has occurred, as indicated by red dots. Each dot does not represent a household, but rather an area where debris has been pushed into a pile and picked up. The city’s Public Works Department continues to clear debris from roadways to ensure safe passage for both emergency and passenger vehicles. Open burning of commercial waste, residential trash, garbage, lawn debris, clippings, trees or other debris on residential, commercial or industrial property is banned within the city under Section 9.2 of the Code of Ordinances. For more information, contact the city Public Works Department at 676-3220. For updates on debris collection, visit ormondbeach. org.

The city will use funds from reserves, and ask FEMA for reimbursement. “These are our citizens and taxpayers, and we need to take care of them,” said Commissioner Rick Boehm.

The search for peace From prisoner to minister: Local man helps others escape their own prisons. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

A VENGEFUL PERSONALITY

FINDING HAPPINESS

Wolfe had several spiritual experiences in his life and had done a lot reading on the subject and been involved with spiritual groups. At 50, he was encouraged by others to read a book called “A Course in Miracles.” He discovered that what he was missing was “authentic forgiveness,” which includes forgiving yourself, he said. Joan Baliker, an Ormond Beach artist, met Wolfe at a meeting of A Course in Miracles, which is a self-study spiritual thought system. “He’s found happiness and now he’s sharing it,” she said. “So many people search for happiness in the wrong places. They are afraid to look within.” Now 66, Wolfe has been writing books and reaching out to prisoners for a decade. Prison newsletters advertise his offer to help, and prisoners write letters to him if interested. He also hopes to be able to visit prisoners in the future. Each morning, he stops by the

beachside post office to pick up letters from prisoners or others. “The prisoners want to know about this ‘God stuff,’” he said with a smile. “I send them a message that they are worthy and can change.” He also offers help to the “needy,” those down on their luck or anyone who wants to hear his message. Wolfe said everyone has spiritual experiences and they just need to recognize them. “God has a special purpose for everybody,” he said. Wolfe moved to Ormond Beach from Chicago in January after being invited by the leaders of A Course in Miracles to lead classes here. “The peace of God is having the conviction that God is closer than my breath,” he said. “God is here. He always has been. The peace of God is profoundly comforting.” Visit spiritlightoutreach.org or call 708-985-1754.

Joe Wolfe has a ministry to help prisoners.

Joe Wolfe remembers his four years in solitary confinement. “It was a modern-day dungeon,” he said. “It was like living in a concrete bathroom.” He eventually got out of prison, but what makes him happy today is that he also escaped the prison of the mind, losing his feelings of guilt, fear and regret. He now reaches out to prisoners to share his peace of mind. “I know what they are going through,” he said recently in an interview outside a coffee shop. As the host of a prison ministry called Spirit Light Outreach, he distributes the seven books he has written about his personal experiences to help change the life of prisoners and those who could be headed to prison. He’s also an ordained minister with Pathways of Light and has spoken at Unity churches and spiritual congregations all over the country.

robbery and a sentence in a maximum-security prison. “I did not grow up around loving people,” he said. “My family was street thugs.” In prison, he had a penchant for escape attempts and this resulted in solitary confinement. Wolfe was released from prison at the age of 27. He married, went to work and led a normal life for 18 years, but then turned to alcohol and drugs.

WATER DEPARTMENT DOES NOT ACCEPT PHONY MONEY 8:31 a.m. — First Block of South Beach Street Fraud. The cashier at the city water department said a resident paid a water bill with five $20 bills. After he left, she checked the bills with a marker and found that one was counterfeit. She then deducted the $20 from the payment. The phony bill did not have a watermark and the color was off. A police officer contacted

the suspect, and he said he received the bill from a tenant but did not know which one. He went to the water department and paid the $20 he owed.

BECAUSE IT’S EASY 8:28 p.m. —800 Block of South Atlantic Avenue Fleeing and Attempting to Elude. A police officer saw a motorcycle speeding southbound past Andy Romano Park, going 53 mph. The officer got behind the motorcycle, and the motorcycle operator looked back at the officer. The officer noted that he recognized the suspect from a previous fleeing and eluding case. The officer activated his emergency lights and siren, and the suspect rapidly accelerated. He drove between cars down the highway, traveling in excess of 100 mph. The officer broke off the chase and radioed a description of the motorcycle. Through the license, the officer was able to find the suspect’s emergency contact number, which was the suspect’s mother. A message was left for the suspect to contact police. The suspect’s mother brought him to the police department. He told the officer that in the past he had run from officers because of problems getting his motorcycle registered. He said he continued to flee because it was easy. He was arrested for fleeing and eluding.

Claire Albrecht led Mainland to its first state tournament run last season.

Jeff Dawsey

CLAIRE ALBRECHT:

In the ‘driver’ seat Albrecht has gone undefeated on her quest for the state championship. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

C

laire Albrecht remembers the days she would compete against her sister, Emma, and parents, Eric and Annie, in chip-shot competitions for ice cream cones. Having won the conference, district and region tournaments this season, she’s now prepared to win a much sweeter prize — a state championship. Albrecht’s journey up to this moment has been fairly easy as a Lady Buc, but her work ethic and sibling competition have allowed her to stay motivated to improve. When asked about the last day she took off from golf, Albrecht gazed into the sky in deep thought, only to respond almost half a minute later, “I can’t remember.” When the Mainland junior is not playing or practicing with the team, she’s playing on another tour. Simply put, her life consists of golf, school and more golf. Annie Albrecht and Claire’s coach, Glenna Redden, made the joke that if she could win the state

WHAT A YEAR! Claire Albrecht won all 10 of Mainland’s 9-hole matches and the two 18-hole tournaments (Volusia-Flagler and Five-Star Conference Tournaments). She finished the regular season with a 9-hole average of 35, leading second-place opponents by an average of eight strokes.

championship, they’d allow her to go to bed an hour earlier. “She’s very focus-driven and goal-oriented,” Annie Albrecht said. “It’s fun to see all of her hard park paying off.” SISTER RIVALRY

Although she has run through all of her competition this season, Albrecht credits her rivalry with her sister, Emma — the Father Lopez alumna who now plays for Notre Dame — as being what developed her game the most. Playing against the area’s former best golfer on a consistent

basis throughout her life, Claire Albrecht progressed quickly — so quickly that she first beat Emma for the first time, at the four-day South Atlantic Women’s Amateur Championship some years ago. “I couldn’t brag about it; I just had to shut up,” Claire Albrecht laughed. “She was upset. She didn’t say much for the rest of the day, but she congratulated me. Then, she beat me the next day, so she got over it.” While she may not be playing Emma come next week, Albrecht knows the competition at the state level — where she’s already played — will be just as fierce. On potentially winning the state title, Albrecht said, “It would mean a lot. It would feel like all of my hard work has paid off. It would also mean that I finished undefeated this entire season. That would be huge … really cool.” Albrecht will compete in the Class 2A Florida High School Golf State Championship Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 1 and 2, at Mission Inn and Resort in Howie-inthe-Hills.

FIGHTING IRISH SISTERS Over the summer, Claire decided to commit to the University of Notre Dame. Her older sister, Emma, currently attends and plays for the Fighting Irish. Claire says she was impressed with Notre Dame’s campus and atmosphere several years back, when the institution first recruited Emma.

t’s an honor to represent your country, and Mainland’s James McCloskey not only got that opportunity last year, but he will also get to play for the USA National Football Team 18U against Team Ontario at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium in Arlington, Texas. “It’s an honor,” McCloskey said, “and I’m going into this year much more comfortable, because my coaches at Mainland have changed my skill level a lot.” In a separate sport, former Flagler Palm Coast soccer standout Stanley Joseph was recently chosen to play for the Haiti National Football (soccer) Team. He made his debut with the team this past weekend. While Joseph was playing with his current team, the University of Mary in North Dakota, fellow Haitian and former Major League Soccer player Ricardo Pierre-Louis saw him and asked if he wanted to play for the national team. “I asked him if he thought I was good enough to play for the team,” Joseph said. “He told me he wouldn’t have asked, if he didn’t think I could. So, he and my coaches began training me. When you have a coach like Rich Weber that’s always pushing you and making you believe you can go as far as possible, and a coach like Reggie (Monsanto) that always motivated you, everything is possible.” What impressed me the most about these two is that they credit their coaching staff for elevating their game and putting them in the position to play on these big stages. Good luck, James McCloskey and Stanley Joseph. By representing your countries, you have already won.

Seabreeze Sandcrabs cross country teams

The Seabreeze Sandcrabs won the District 3A-6 Championship on Saturday, Oct. 22, at New Smyrna Beach. The Lady Sandcrabs placed runner-up. For the boys, the win proved to be a total team effort. After all of Seabreeze and New Smyrna’s Top 5 runners were scored, both schools were tied at 32-32. It went down to the sixth runner, and Dylan Oakes improved his PR by 34 seconds for 14th place to gain tie-breaking points.

Logan Horning and Shane Brownwig led the Sandcrabs with a third- and fourth-place finish, respectively. Jared Bell (seventh) and Ian Yates (eighth) followed suit, and Nick Barnes closed out the Top 10. Every runner except Yates ran a personal best. For the Lady Sandcrabs, senior Lea Gray won the girls’ race. Nina Browder placed seventh, and Grace Smith (11th), Moriya Patsch (13th), Cindy Saaman (14th) and Christina Vega (15th) closed out the Top 15. All girls ran personal bests.

Cyrus Fagan chosen for Under Armour game Mainland’s Cyrus Fagan, along with family members, his team and friends, accepted his honorary game jersey for the Under Armour All-America Game during the Selection Tour at a press conference held on Monday, Oct. 24, at Mainland High School.

The game will feature more than 90 of the nation’s best senior high school football players, based upon ESPN Recruiting. Fagan currently ranked No. 5 at his position in the nation. The Under Armour All-American Game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, in Orlando. “It’s a blessing I’ve always dreamed about,” Fagan said. “I’m looking forward to becoming a better player by playing against the nation’s best.” Cyrus Fagan

Who’s going to win this week? Here are my predictions. My overall season record: 23-5 — JEFF DAWSEY

Mainland wins 60-0. In their last 12 meetings, Mainland has won 10 times, with 33 points being the largest margin. That’s going to change come Friday. The Bucs have no visible weaknesses at any position or facet of the game, while the Sandcrabs have looked vulnerable in the same. Seabreeze came within minutes of upsetting Deltona, but the Wolves pulled off the go-ahead score in the end to win 10-6. The Bucs are coming off their most impressive win, a 63-7 thrashing of New Smyrna. Expect the Bucs to find the end zone early and often while holding Seabreeze scoreless.

First Academy wins 48-7. The Green Wave defense has struggled in every game this season, including the two wins. Every opponent has scored at least 30 points against Lopez. Given a formidable opponent in Cocoa Beach last week, Lopez fell 34-21. While the defense hasn’t played well, the offense has also played under expectations this season. It has only managed to go over 20 points just three times this year. This week will prove to be another tough outing for the Green Wave. First Academy has annihilated each of its opponents except its 14-10 over Trinity Catholic, which beat Lopez 45-0. The Green Wave will struggle against the Royals on both sides of the ball.

ail Warner, who has a hobby of creating clothes from discarded items to encourage recycling, doesn’t miss her chance to create something special for Halloween. This year, she dressed as “Merlot,” while her husband was a corkscrew. They were able to show off their creations at an early Halloween party at the home of Fred Sergeant, who says having the party the week before the holiday results in a big turnout each year. For her skirt, Warner borrowed a friend’s table saw and sawed 700 corks in half. “Everyone saved their corks for me,” she said. She also used cardboard from a case of wine and plastic wine glasses from a discount store. Her husband was a corkscrew, and the “screw” part was taken from a device that screws into the ground for a dog leash. He used other “up-cycled” items including a flexible pipe and bicycle gears. Warner also made a costume for her friend, Susan Hawthorne, called “the cloud,” the data storage device. Her skirt, which held photos and documents, was made of 140 shredded plastic bags. They had to be careful with their costumes because they plan to wear them Oct. 28 at a party at the Halifax Plantation Pub. — WAYNE GRANT

Living the American dream

Gift Certificates Available!!!

Within just a few weeks, Csaba Arnold Kolozsvari won a bodybuilding competition, bought a house and became an American citizen.

Hard work is an essential element to the great American dream. Success only feels like success if you’ve got blood, sweat, and tears to show for it — and Csaba Arnold Kolozsvari has done his fair share of sweating. A lifelong bodybuilder and coowner of Revive Health and Fitness, Kolozsvari moved to the United States from Hungary 17 years ago in pursuit of becoming like his idol, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Kolozsvari started training when he was 13, soon after seeing Schwarzenegger for the first time, and started competing when he was 19. Though his original goal when he came to America was to become a professional body builder, he’s glad it didn’t happen. “I always said I’m going to live for my body, and not my physical capabilities,” he said. “Unfortunately, there’s just too much risk taken, which I don’t believe in. I’m glad somehow life transferred me to the things I’m doing now instead of me focusing on me just going crazy trying to become a professional athlete.” Still, during his first five years in America, he struggled to make ends meet, lived in a home without a bathroom and was almost blackmailed by an ex and sent back to Hungary. “I tell my clients, ‘When you go through hell, keep going,’ just like Winston Churchill said,” Kolozsvari said. “So I kept going, and a

year after all that, things started to get better.” In 2010, he opened up Revive Health and Fitness and eventually joined forces with his best friend and co-owner, Daniel Legault. He said he’s grateful to have had clients who have followed him from location to location, eventually landing in Ormond Beach. And while he’s felt the success of his American dream for some time, this past month it became official. “I took the citizenship test Sept. 3, and I bought my house Sept. 15,” he smiled. “I thought it would take a while to get sworn in, but they called me a week later and told me the ceremony would be on Sept. 30. And then the day after, that I won my contest.” The contest was the 2016 Daytona Beach Classic, a National Physique Committee bodybuilding competition. Kolozsvari won first place in the Masters over 40 Division and third place in the Novice Division, where he said fellow Ormond Beach competitor Mark Cunningham “accidentally” beat him. Looking forward, Kolozsvari plans on updating the home he bought in Plantation Bay and competing in another competition at the end of the year. Though the process of swearing in was moving in itself, he said, when he passed the citizenship test, his big American dream felt real. “Knowing I passed the test, that moment hit me the hardest,” he said. “It was when I realized I had actually made it all happen.”

BUSINESS OBSERVER at 75 N. Nova Road, arranged to have 300 pounds of chicken salad donated, according to Ginny Kent, HUM director of community relations. The chicken salad fed over 200 people. Mark Geallis, executive director, said, “On behalf of the people we serve, we thank God and our friends at Chicken Salad Chick Restaurant.” The next HUM fund-raising event will be the annual Empty Bowls Event and Silent Auction on Jan. 21 at BCU – Center for Civic Engagement. PINK BIKERS Hundreds of motorcyclists traveled from Flagler Hospital Flagler to Destination Daytona for a Pink Army flag raising party on Sept. 25. The event raised both funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. The funds raised by this event will help local women in need detect breast cancer earlier through mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies and education, according to a press release.

LADIES NIGHT FOR A FEW ORMOND WOMEN INCLUDED WINE, CHEESE AND CAR MAINTENANCE Your average “girls night out” is usually held at a bar or a club — not an auto mechanic shop. But the group of 26 women, who attended Honest-1’s first Ladies’ Night, didn’t come for the free drinks, they came for the free lesson in car maintenance. “Part of our job is to educate the customers about what kind of work we’re doing on their car,” said owner Eric Sewell. “Quite a few people come in, especially women, who want us to teach them more.” So Sewell created the event as a way for women to learn more about their cars and what they need to do to get the most life out of them. Held Oct. 20 at the shop, located at 720 S. Nova Road, the event was led by service advisers

Sharon Sewell, Kristine Minimi, and Yasmeen St. Clair. With a strict “girls only” rule, Sewell said they had to turn away a few men who wanted to join. “About 65-70% of our clientele is women,” he said. “They’re the ones asking questions. Men simply just don’t ask that many questions, even if they don’t know the answers.” The first class covered topics like how to jump-start a car, the different fluids in a car and how often they need to be changed, how to pick a good auto repair shop and the different dashboard lights and what they mean. Sewell said he wants to make the event quarterly, with the next one being held Jan. 26. “The auto repair industry has a bad rap,” Sewell said. “Part of our mission statement is to dispel that label.” Follow Ormond Beach Honest-1 Auto Care on Facebook.

FIELDS BUYS VOLVO Fields Auto Group recently bought Volvo of Daytona, the oldest familyowned auto dealership in Daytona Beach. General Manager Steve McDonald said Volvo will share space with Volkswagon until about June 2019. “We’re big believers in Volvo,” the Ormond Beach resident said. “Great brand, great product, and it’ll be a great compliment to what we have.” McDonald said they also bought the Volvo building at 601 Mason Ave., and plan to sell it. It is necessary to register with FEMA. Call the SBA at 800-6592955.

CHICK-FIL-A REOPENS AFTER RENOVATIONS The Chick-fil-A in Ormond Towne Square reopened at 6 a.m. Oct. 21. The fast food restaurant closed Sept. 17 for renovations.

SBA LOANS AVAILABLE Small Business Administration loans are now available for businesses affected by Hurricane Matthew in Volusia County. Businesses and nonprofits can apply for up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster damaged assets. Homeowners can apply for up to $200,000 to repair or replace disaster damaged real estate. Homeowners and renters can apply for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged personal property including automobiles.

EVOLUTION HEALTH ANNOUNCES MOVE DATE Evolution Health Club will open in their new location, 495 S. Nova Road, Suite 113, on Nov. 1, according to Alicia Wade, spokeswoman. They are moving from their longtime location on West Granada Boulevard. Wade said they will have all new equipment and are adding new classes. Call 236-9956.
