Top Cops Corner stories of 2016 JAN. 3

SLOW IN THE FAST-FOOD LANE 1:35 p.m. — 300 Block of West Granada Boulevard DUI. The officer responded to a report of a person possibly passed out in a vehicle in a drive-thru lane at a fast-food store. Upon arrival, he saw the passenger car stopped just short of the order window. Upon inspection, the officer found that the driver had his head leaned to the left. The car was in drive and the suspect had his foot on the brake pedal. While reaching into the car to put the vehicle in park, the officer noted that he was breathing through his mouth and there was an odor of alcohol. The officer turned the engine off and the suspect woke up. EVAC arrived at the scene but the suspect refused service. The suspect said he probably had too much to drink. After failing sobriety exercises, the suspect was arrested.

JAN. 17

NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU NEED A GLASS BREAKER 1:35 a.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard Suspicious Person. Police were dispatched to a store because of a suspicious person looking to buy a ski mask and a glass breaker. When contacted in the store, the suspect had zip ties, duct tape, camouflage ski masks, trash bags, a glass breaker, tool box, two cell phones and food in her shop-

ping cart. She said she was buying the ski masks for a trip to New York with her boyfriend and the glass breaker because she and her boyfriend “lock themselves out of their vehicles and sometimes need to break the glass.” The other items were for her boyfriend’s work, she said.

FEB. 29

EXPENSIVE ACCESSORIES 4:49.m. — 300 Block of West Granada Boulevard Theft. The victim said she left her purse in the restaurant. When she returned, the manager ran the surveillance tape which showed some people taking it. She lost a Louis Vuitton purse valued at $3,400; a Louis Vuitton wallet, $1,200; and Louis Vuitton keychain, $900. The purse had $1 in cash.

MAY 8

BY THE WAY, I’M A PROFESSIONAL 12:13 p.m. — First Block of Hickory Hills Circle Burglary. The victim said he met the suspect on Criagslist. They decided to meet for a date at the victim’s house, and they left to go to dinner. In the car, the suspect said she was a junky, addicted to heroin, and propositioned the suspect for sex. He told her he was alarmed that she was a prostitute and dropped her off. After returning home, he received a text message on his phone that was apparently not

intended for him. The message said, “Pretend to be interested in the house and be safe. Do a good walk around and let me know what he has.” The next morning, the victim noticed that all six screens in the back and sides of the house had been removed from the windows. He also found a pry bar. No damage was done to the windows.

MAY 15

SPLITTING HAIRS 2:32 p.m. — First Block of Tropical Falls Drive Theft. The victim said his wife’s wedding ring, valued at $5,000, was missing from the safe. It has a gold band and three diamonds. He suspected a relative. The officer questioned the relative, and told her if she took the ring and pawned it, she would be guilty of a felony. The suspect asked, “What if someone else pawned it?”

JULY 1

ELECTRICITY NOT FREE 7:10 a.m. — 100 Block of South Halifax Drive Theft. The victim showed the police officer an extension cord which has been plugged into an outlet on the outside of his house. It ran through the back porch of the neighboring house, and then into the house. The officer asked the neighbor about the extension cord, and she said there was no electricity in the house, and she using the victim’s outlet to watch TV. She said she did not know it was

NOV.4

SUSPECT SAYS NO TO TOW 2:25 p.m. — 100 Block of South Nova Road Criminal Mischief, Damage to Property. The victim said she was in the process of repossessing the victim’s Mustang when he asked if he could move some property from the vehicle. She lowered the vehicle back to the ground and allowed him to enter it. While he was inside, the suspect started the car and attempted to drive it off the truck lift, driving forward and then reverse. A tire caught on fire and it spread to the strap and lift mechanism, causing damage. The suspect offered to pay for the damages. He said he was just trying to get his vehicle back.

theft. The victim did not pursue charges, but asked that the suspect be trespassed from his property. The extension cord was removed, and the suspect said she would not go on the victim’s property.

SEPT. 22

ADDING INSULT TO THEFT 10:36 p.m. — First Block of Ocean Shore Drive Retail Theft, Contributing to Delinquency of a Minor. The victims said the suspect came into the store, walked around filling up a bag with merchandise and then came up to the counter. The suspect then said she needed to send her child, about 9 years old, out to get her wallet from their vehicle. The suspect and child then ran out the door with the merchandise, with the victim chasing them and yelling. Once out in the parking lot, the bag ripped and all of the merchandise fell onto the ground. The suspects ran away, so the victim started taking photos of all the cars in the parking lot in case one might belong to the suspects. The suspect and the child then came back around the corner of the store, stopped, made faces and gave the victim the middle finger. They then got into a van and left. It was determined that 118 makeup and hygienic items were stolen and dropped in the parking lot with a value of $1,086.53.

SPORTS THE YEAR IN SPORTS: How we saw the action and the athletes.

Looking back at 2016’s best moments

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

tudent-athletes from Seabreeze, Mainland and Father Lopez accomplished so many great feats that pushed them further than they expected this past year. I know a lot goes on in 365 days, but let’s reminisce on some of 2016’s biggest moments in sports. Mainland’s Adrian Killins won the only state championship between the three schools, going back-to-back in the 200-meter race. His speed has taken him to the University of Central Florida’s football team, where he went for 974 yards and seven touchdowns this past season. D’Marcus Adams put the track world on notice, winning four individual district championships and two regional titles. Both Killins and Adams’ football teammate, Denzel Houston, completed his high school career with 124 touchdowns and eight playoff wins. He led the Bucs to a 37-4 record in his three years as the starting quarterback. Although Father Lopez football struggled this season, quarterback Josh Spencer and the Green Wave provided great theatrics in their two wins. Spencer totaled seven touchdowns in those games, leading late game-winning drives to help Lopez beat rival Warner Christian Academy 41-35 and Trinity Prep 36-35. Lady Sandcrab quarterback McKenzie Bowlus also finished her high school flag football career, having accounted for 117 touchdowns. Bowlus led Seabreeze to three district championships, and she was selected twice as the Bright House Flag Football Player of the Year. In one of the year’s biggest upsets, Seabreeze baseball (10-15 at the time) shocked heavy district favorite Deltona 8-3 in the district semifinal. The Wolves were 18-8 and 11-1 in the district. Father Lopez girls’ track team won its district championship for the first time in 29 years. Ronald Reagan was serving as president when the Lady Green Wave last won. And last but not least, Mainland’s Claire Albrecht went undefeated throughout the season, winning every tournament and golf match until the state competition, where she placed fifth. While some of the best student-athletes graduated, I’m confident we’ll have plenty to watch in 2017.
