SETTING House in the Kentucky woods, about 70 miles outside of Louisville. Present day. Just before dawn.

The Cortez Method runs approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes with an intermission.

The Cortez Method is an adult story of family dysfunction, infidelity, and controlled substances.

The play is best suited for adult audiences.

THE CORTEZ METHOD DIRECTOR’S NOTES How far are we willing to go to get what we want? How many iterations of the American Dream are out there? Are we holding onto a dream that no longer exists? Can you rise above who you are or will your past always present an overwhelming obstacle?

Bill and Sara just want to renovate a house in rural America so that they can have a family in a stable home, but they are fighting long odds. Their differing backgrounds, along with their questionable choices, are working against them. The couple will have to rise to the challenges they face, making more hard choices to ensure they stay on course to achieving their dream. They are digging in for their piece of the pie.

INTERVIEW WITH THE PLAYWRIGHT - ROB KEEFE OS: What inspired you to write The Cortez Method and from where did the correlation to the famous explorer come?

RK: In my play, Walter's interpretation of what Cortez did is based on a myth. He does what he thinks is an important dramatic act and gets it wrong. He wants to make a point that there's no retreat but all he really does is screw himself up. Walter is someone with nothing to lose and when he collides with Bill and Sara, things get kind of volatile.

OS: In this play you combined really dark subject matter with witty sarcasm. Comedy, drama, dramedy - how would you label it?

RK: I'm not sure how to categorize this play except to say it's a “dark comedy”. It straddles the line between dark and funny, and pretty much takes place in real time. [This] is interesting to me because we get to witness things happen and unravel. The minute Bill enters that kitchen we are on a roller coaster with him, and with the cast we have at Orlando [Shakes], it promises to be quite a ride. When the sun comes up, it starts to get dark.

OS: Each character in The Cortez Method is desperate for something. Which of them are you rooting for to succeed?

RK: Even more than desperate, all four characters have a clarity born from experience. They're at points in their lives where what they want is very clear and they are very specific about achieving their goals. A couple of them are delusional as hell, but everybody has a pretty good idea of what they want. Desperate only happens when something or someone gets in the way. I like them all, even though they're not always pleasant.

OS: Why is this play relevant to today’s audiences and what do you want them to take away from the production?

RK: I think anyone who's ever been married, had siblings, or renovated their kitchen can relate to this play. I think it's a very American story because it's about class and the options that may or may not be available to you based on your background. Everybody on that stage is trying to improve themselves in one way or another, but they don't all choose the best or most legal route.

CAST BIOS (in alphabetical order) PAUL BERNARDO* (Bill | 8th Season) Previously, Paul has appeared in the Orlando Shakes productions of Titus Andronicus (Marcus Andronicus), Julius Ceasar (Brutus), The Two Gentlemen of Verona (Outlaw, Lobby Singer), Hamlet (Claudius), The Winter’s Tale (Polixenes, Antigonus), Measure for Measure (Duke Vincentio), and Macbeth (Banquo), as well as various PlayFest readings and workshops. Paul has also appeared in numerous industrials and commercials as well as independent and feature films, including Brian de Palma's Snake Eyes. Paul is a proud graduate of the Shakespeare Theater Company’s Academy for Classical Acting MFA program at the George Washington University.

RILEY CLERMONT* (Walter | Debut Season) Riley began his professional career at the age of 17 at Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theater of North Carolina, where he spent eight unforgettable summers.

Working in and out of Orlando for the last 20 years, he has been featured in productions including A Bright Room Called Day, Len Jenkin's Dracula, Moonlight & Magnolia's, and most recently August Osage County at Mad Cow. Riley would like to thank his incredibly supportive family, especially his lovely wife Michelle.

SUZANNE O’DONNELL* (Sara | 14th Season) Suzanne recently appeared in Othello, Sense and Sensibility, Farndale Avenue… and God of Carnage at Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Her first season at Orlando Shakes was in 1993 playing Rosalind in As You Like It and Adriana in Comedy of Errors. Other OST credits include: the Governess in Turn of the Screw, Mistress Ford, Hermione, Hermia, Lady Percy, Julia, Ophelia, Emilia, Beatrice, and Kate in Taming of the Shrew. Recent regional credits include Boston Marriage (1812 Productions), Comedy of Errors, Arcadia (Folger Theatre), Romeo and Juliet, Dancing at Lughnasa (Arden Theatre), and Social Security, Dinner with Friends (Cape May Stage).

MELANIE WHIPPLE* (Odette | 3rd Season) Melanie received her degree in Theatre from the Pennsylvania State University.

Some favorite roles include Lotty in Enchanted April, Hedda in Hedda Gabler, and Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street. She can currently be seen swimming with the fishes at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Finding Nemo: The Musical!

CREATIVE & PRODUCTION BIOS ROB KEEFE (Playwright | Debut Season) Rob Keefe’s plays include No Real Distance, The Cortez Method, and The Grief Caper. During his three-year tenure as Artist-In-Residence with George Coates Performance Works, he developed Right Mind for the American Conservatory Theatre, as well as The Architecture of Catastrophic Change and Invisible Site. For the Official Group, The Official Show- Now with Blimp was performed at The

Producers’ Club (NYC) and A Floating Roof ran at the Chelsea Playhouse (NYC). On television, he was a staff writer and cast member for Sportskabob on the MSG Network, and co-hosted and wrote for Real Simple on PBS for WGBH Boston. His sketch comedy including Meet the Pocket Subversives and Improving the Species has been performed at the West Bank Theatre in New York and at the Improv in LA. He has written several plays for Thrillpeddlers in San Francisco. Among them are A Slight Tingling, The Empress of Colma and The Phantom Limb. No Real Distance was a finalist for the Playwrights First Award at the National Arts Club. His play Parenthecide; (A Version) was the recipient of a grant from the Skaggs Foundation and was performed at the Encore Theatre in San Francisco. The Twisted Pair, a commission from Thrillpeddlers and Brazil’s Vigor Mortis is to be performed in San Francisco and Rio de Janiero in early 2013. Rob is a graduate of Boston University’s School for the Arts and was trained at the National Theatre of Great Britain. He currently resides in NYC with his family.

GEORGE HAMRAH (Sound Designer | 7th Season) George is a graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in CT. A member of Actors’ Equity Association, Mr. Hamrah has worked as a Stage Manager for theatres throughout the east coast including Trinity Repertory in Providence, RI; The Barter Theatre in Virginia; Orlando Theatre Project; Florida Repertory; Riverside Theatre in Florida; Walt Disney World; Royal Caribbean International; Acadia Repertory Theatre in Maine; and Arena Stage in Washington, DC. Currently, George is the Production Manager for Orlando Shakes.

MARY HEFFERNAN (Lighting Designer | 7th Season) Mary greatly enjoys designing the New Play Series as well as the Theater for Young Audiences series.

Her past favorites include Sleeping Beauty, Miss Nelson is Missing, Schoolhouse Rock Live!, and Charlie Bethel’s Beowulf.

MARK ROUTHIER (Director | 4th Season) Mark Routhier is the Director of New Play Development at Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Partnership with UCF, where he is an Assistant Professor in Directing and Acting. Mark’s Orlando credits include Sense and Sensibility, God of Carnage, Opus, and Charlotte’s Web for Orlando Shakespeare Theatre. And Bachelorette with FWP Productions at the Orlando International Fringe Festival.

He was Associate Artistic Director at Southern Rep where he directed The Piano Teacher, Opus, and The Seafarer, as well as Zombie Town: A Documentary Play and Love Child for Southern Rep @ Le Chat Noir. He directed the world premieres of John Biguenet’s Mold and another play called Freedom by multiple Playwrights, also at Southern Rep, the co-production of Lanford Wilson’s Balm in Gilead with The Nola Project and Cripple Creek Theatre Co. (Big Easy Award for Best Director of a Drama, 2012 and Times-Pic’s Best Production of 2012), Orange Flower Water at the Elm Theatre (Big Easy Award for Best Director of a Drama, 2011), Cat’s-Paw with InsideOut Prod. at the Allways Lounge and Theatre, The Santaland Diaries with A.J. Allegra at Le Chat Noir.

Bay Area credits include Monkey Room, Magic Theatre, Skin, The Bone Man of Benares, 70 Scenes of Halloween, Encore Theatre, Jihad Jones and the Kalashnikov Babes, Golden Thread. He’s directed workshops with playwrights Eisa Davis, Annie Baker, Marisa Wegrzyn, Rajiv Joseph, and John Biguenet, among others.

Mark served as the Literary Chair and Vice President on the Executive Committee of the National New Play Network. He received an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU. He is a satellite member of The Nola Project in New Orleans.

VICTORIA “BIRD” RUIZ (Stage Manager | 2nd Season) “Bird” graduated from Louisiana State University in 2012 and – after working as a stage management apprentice with the Orlando Shakespeare Theater – has joined the theater full-time as the Company Manager. As a Stage Manager for Orlando Shakes, Bird has worked on Sleeping Beauty, The Odyssey, The Exit Interview, and The Farndale Christmas Carol. Her previous credits include Swine Palace’s Design for Living, The Metal Children, and A Doll’s House; LSU’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and The Hangar Theatre’s Gem of the Ocean. She is pleased to be stage-managing Harriett's New Play Series for Orlando Shakes’ 2013-2014 season. Proud member of Actors' Equity Association.

MOLLY WALZ (Costume Designer | Debut Season) A native of Dayton, Ohio, Molly recently relocated to Orlando to work as the costume shop manager at Orlando Repertory Theatre. She has a degree in theatre and a minor in history from Kent State University and has been working throughout the Midwest and up the east coast since graduation. Past companies include The Human Race Theatre Company, Allenberry Playhouse, The College Light Opera Company, and Glimmerglass Opera, among others. Over the last 10 years as a charge scenic artist with Orlando Shakespeare Theater, she has had the pleasure of designing over a dozen shows for the Theater for Young Audience Series. Robbin has also designed for Birmingham Children’s Theatre, Garden Variety Shakespeare, Festival Theatre, Atlantic Coast Theater for Youth, and Harrison School for the Performing Arts.
