What does it take to build Oregon’s oldest family-owned coffee shop? For Becky Jo Saxe, it started on a coffee farm in Hawaii and grew into a family tradition.
Oregon native Becky Jo Saxe’s passion for coffee began when she lived on a coffee bean farm in Kona, Hawaii after graduating from college. That experience shaped her path, leading her to co-found BJ’s Coffee Co. in 1992, making it the oldest family-owned coffee shop in the state.
From the start, BJ’s Coffee set itself apart by roasting its own beans sourced from growers around the world. Thirty-three years ago, this hands-on approach was rare.
Today her son Nathan Palmer, who has his own coffee roastery, To the Roots, which provides the beans served at BJ’s, carries on this commitment to quality and has built strong relationships with coffee growers that prioritize traceability, sustainability and transparency.

EAST MEETS WEST: HAPA PIZZA
It all started with a happy accident. Aaron Truong purchased a pizza oven so he could make pizzas for his family. While experimenting with pizza making, he threw on some Asian ingredients and Hapa Pizza was born.
After being one of the most popular food vendors at the Beaverton Farmers Market, with people lining up for their inventive pizzas, Aaron and his wife Natalie opened a brickand-mortar restaurant, which was recognized as one of the top pizza spots in the U.S. by The New York Times.

Forager Vintage opened in 2020 with a curated collection of retro clothing from the ‘70s to the ‘90s, bags, gift items, fashion jewelry and accessories. “We're into very whimsical fashions…inspired by nature out here in the Pacific Northwest, but also inspired by storybooks and a little weird and fun and different,” she says.

Binary Brewing is a “techinspired” craft brewery in the heart of Beaverton. Named after “binary code,” which uses the digits 0 and 1 in programming, co-owner Josh Johnson equates it to hops and malts, where with just one tweak, you can make drastically different beer styles.
Established in 2018, Binary moved into downtown Beaverton in 2021. “The town has so much amazing history,” Johnson says of his taproom’s space in the former Beaverton Bakery. “It’s really cool to be part of a community [where] you get to watch relationships grow.”
Johnson also has developed a community within the Pacific Northwest craft brewery crowd and has collaborated with other brewers to make one-off brews. “Brewery collaborations are really fun because we get to each bring our different skill sets in,” Johnson said. Look for Binary’s newest “collab” beer during Tap Season in February.

KE'ONA HERRERA OWNER OF I BODY LOVE
Ke’ona Herrera is passionate about her work. As the owner of I Body Love, she creates non-toxic bath and body products for all skin types and environmentally friendly candles, caring about ingredients and the planet.
“We started off making bath products because my girls wanted to buy bath bombs at the stores,” Ke’ona explains. “I read the ingredients on them. They’re not good for your skin. You can’t soak in them. So we basically just start making our own products at home, starting with bath bombs.”
All of her products are sustainable and handmade, made with plant-based ingredients, as well as customizable. The candles are made with sustainable, Oregon-grown soy wax.
Ke’ona also sources Oregon-made coconut oil and hemp seed oil for her products.
She also offers hands-on experiences with the candle making classes, which walks you through the experience of how to blend fragrances and how to put the candles together to create a custom, unique candle.
“You’re creating something that’s unique to you. No one else is going to create the scent that you’ve created,” she offers.
