Oklahoma Senior Journal’s

goal is to provide resources for the 50+ and their adult children, family, professional and family caregivers. We participate in diverse ways within the senior community, building relationships, and seeking out the best companies to serve the Oklahoma City metro.

We are honored to focus this issue on Nerve Renewal, an innovative company who is helping those with neuropathy to feel like themselves again! With new technology they are able to give those with tingling and painful nerves a huge sense of relief without side effects. Learn more about Nerve Renewal on pages 9-13.

A little about myself... My mother Bobbie Gunn and I speak regularly at conferences about family caregiving. We offer insights that we have gained in our personal experience with my dad, Gordon Gunn, as well as all that we’ve learned along the way in our journey in the senior community.

My business partner Angel and I regularly attend community events to share the Oklahoma Senior Journal and all that we

have learned about the fabulous resources available to Oklahomans. We have worked on the last two editions, including the 30th anniversary issue together. Our collaboration has been vital to these two OSJ magazines. Angel will continue to be a part of the OSJ team, but will also be consulting for retirement communities.

Each week I host the OSJ Radio Hour and offer inspirational and insightful guests to help this particular demographic. I feature these guests on my weekly enewsletter along with many events, network opportunities and gatherings. To keep yourself informed sign up on okseniorjournal.com.

I am a Co-Partner in the largest 50+ expo in the OKC metro held in October each year. The Second Half Expo is another fantastic opportunity to learn about resources for seniors. See page 61 for the details and I hope to meet you there!

I serve on the boards of the Legal Aid of Oklahoma and Informed Senior Seminars. I write monthly articles for the Oklahoman in the Viewpoints section and have been a Ladies in the News Honoree in 2022 as well as a Business Woman Trailblazer Honoree in 2022.

RELIEVE PAIN AND TINGLING

Falls are the beginning of decline in many older adults. Many falls are the result of pain or numbness caused by peripheral neuropathy. Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinics offer innovative, personalized, non-invasive treatments to address the pain and disabling effects of neuropathy.

With three clinics strategically located in the greater Oklahoma City area and two more planned this year, Nerve Renewal provides easy access to treatments which patients praise as life-changing.

“At Nerve Renewal, we are on a mission to help Oklahomans renew their quality of life through estab-

lished nerve pain treatments that provide safe and effective relief,” said Tim Bales, owner of Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinics. “Our prominent clients are seniors. They have some sort of pain, mainly neuropathy, and they are looking for some kind of relief from that pain or more feeling in their extremities.”

Nerve Renewal uses targeted, high dosage Electroanalgesia (EA) treatments to reduce pain without the drawbacks of invasive procedures or addictive medications. The high-frequency energy blocks the pain signal in the injured part of the body, providing relief with no recovery needed. Bales said studies show that 80% of patients experience a long-term reduction in pain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed widespread occurrence of peripheral neuropathy, especially among older adults. It reported an incidence of 10.4% for middle-aged adults 40-69 years old, 26.8% for older adults 70+, and 39.2% for older adults with atherosclerosis risk. Atherosclerosis is thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by a buildup of plaque in the inner lining of an artery. Risk factors may include high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity, physical activity, and eating saturated fats.

“Peripheral neuropathy typically starts with numbness and tingling in the hands and feet before progressing into constant pain,” said Sarah Jones, APRN. “This condition reduces sensation in lower limbs, affecting your balance, and leads to decreased muscle strength. This combination increases your reliance on vision and is especially dangerous in low-light situations where the risk of falling is greatest.”

Peripheral neuropathy is a condi-

tion that results from damage to nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord. Those who have peripheral neuropathy often experience pain, numbness, and weakness in their hands and feet. This can affect other things too, like walking or digestion. The cause of peripheral neuropathy can vary depending on the person, but it is most commonly caused by diabetes, chemotherapy, or trauma to the nerve endings. Some people with this condition describe the pain as stabbing or burning sensations.

According to the American Geriatrics Society, 65% of seniors with peripheral neuropathy have at least one fall per year, and 30% of those falls resulted in an injury that required hospitalization. In the most recent study, the soci ety estimated medical costs attributable to fatal and nonfatal falls was approxi mately $50.0 bil lion. For nonfatal falls, Medicare paid approxi mately $28.9

Sarah Jones, APRN

billion, Medicaid $8.7 billion, and private and other payers $12.0 billion. Overall medical spending for fatal falls was estimated to be $754 million.

“Staying on top of your health is so important,” Jones said. “Many people dismiss numbness and tingling as a normal part of aging, but it needs special attention so that you are not more susceptible to falls. Treatment with electromedical therapy is preferable to chemical nerve blocks, especially when the pathology is widespread.”

Electroanalgesia works by delivering exact dosages of electrical stimulation to peripheral nerves. These high frequencies can decrease the ability of the affected nerves to transmit pain, which brings relief and healing. There is no opioid drowsiness, addiction concerns, or side effects.

Jones said patients experience longterm reduction in pain without surgery or medication through the use of proven Electroanalgesia (EA) treatments. The high-frequency energy blocks the pain signal in the injured part of the body, providing relief with no recovery time needed.

While the treatment regimen is tailored to each individual, Nerve

Renewal patients generally receive 12 to 24 treatments over 5 to 12 weeks. Therapy combines injections of a pharmaceutical-grade nutrient blend with electroanalgesia to provide relief from symptoms. While many patients experience some relief after two or three treatments, it is important that patients complete the full course as recommended since the effects are cumulative. One aspect of the treatment plan may include a weekly balance test to assess the level of improvement.

With just over a year of providing services at the initial Nerve Renewal Nephropathy Clinic location in northwest Oklahoma City, there are a growing number of patients who testify to the benefits of treatments. Here are some typical comments:

“My name is Gary and Nerve Renewal changed my life. I’ve always been an avid hiker, but over time, the pain in my feet kept me from enjoying the outdoors. When I came for my first appointment they explained everything to me and it was very comforting. I have seven grandchildren, and since coming to Nerve Renewal, I’ve been able to go out with them and enjoy the out-

doors and hike with them. That’s been a marvelous thing for me.”

“My name is Phyllis and Nerve Renewal has changed my life for the better. Since coming to Nerve Renewal I can get around in my home by myself and I have feeling in my legs and feet. The staff made me feel very comfortable, explained everything to me, and it was very therapeutic. I felt great when I left and I’m excited to come back. So if you are experiencing pain or numbness in your hands or your feet call Nerve Renewal today.”

“My name is Hilton. Before I came to Nerve Renewal, I’ve had problems with feet burning, numbness, and I couldn’t tolerate the covers on my feet at night. And after three short weeks, I’ve noticed the difference in my feet. No numbness

and tingling and my grandkids can come out and I’m able to spend time with them out walking them around with the mule. After having so much success, I referred my wife, and she’s getting treatment now.”

Most Patients do not need a doctor’s referral, and treatments are covered by major insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid and the VA.

“Seniors want a larger role in their health care, and Nerve Renewal offers just that,” said Marilyn Olson, executive director of VillagesOKC, a nonprofit which promotes empowered independence for older adults and is a mentor to Nerve Renewal. She said many older adults with neuropathy of the feet are prone to stumble and fall – and falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and older.

“Many with neuropathy of the feet are prone to stumble and fall,” Olson said. “Every year, falls result in hospitalization of approximately 7,000 older adults and the death of more than 450 older adults in Oklahoma. In America, one in four people 65 and older fall at least once

every year, also true in Oklahoma. Falls are the single most consistent indicator of decline.

“Most falls are at home. The most likely place is in the home, in the bathroom, at night. The reason: low vision, poor balance. Often balance is off because of no feeling in the feet and toes. Nerve Renewal’s therapy addresses the neuropathy in the feet and toes, which reduces the likelihood of stumbling and falling. It also allows renewed walking and exercise, which improves balance.”

Nerve Renewal believes that service to others is not just a philosophy –it is the heart of the organization. They embrace the transformative power of service and strive to make a meaningful impact on the lives of their clients, employees, and communities.

“At Nerve Renewal, we are on a mission to help Oklahomans renew their quality of life through established nerve pain treatments that provide safe and effective relief,” Bales said.

Nerve Renewal provides non-invasive treatments for neuropathy and nerve pain, providing relief from pain or tingling in the feet and hands. Conditions treated include peripheral neuropathy, chemotherapy induced neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, phantom limb syndrome and post-surgical nerve pain.

Nerve Renewal is a full-year into its plan to open multiple neuropathy clinics in the greater Oklahoma City area. Why so many? Bales said it’s important to have convenient locations and flexible hours because it’s difficult for many patients to travel far because of the persistent pain.

You've earned it: Commit to your Second Half!

I'm deeply committed to our seniors' well-being, and I want to emphasize the vital role of estate planning attorneys in their lives, especially as we navigate the complexities of aging. Life can throw curveballs – from healthcare decisions to safeguarding legacies – and that's where estate planning attorneys come in, armed with the experience to guide seniors and their families through the challenges.

As time passes, we should become increasingly aware of the need for intentional planning. Ignoring the hard facts of death and hoping for a smooth outcome is not a good plan. Estate Planning is a gift for your loved ones, providing clear direction and instructions without doubt about your wishes.

Estate planning extends beyond mere legal documents. It encompasses collaborating with a dedicated attorney who comprehends your aspirations, concerns, and objectives. This attorney then tailors a holistic solution to address your planning needs. For seniors who've diligently accumulated wealth, estate planning attorneys assist in safeguarding assets, mitigating tax impact, and ensuring a secure distribution aligned with their wishes.

Financial Vigilance

The financial vulnerabilities seniors may face cannot be overlooked. As we eventually transition our financial responsibilities, a skilled estate planning attorney aids in creating a plan that guarantees a smooth and seamless handover of control.

As an estate planning attorney, I go beyond legal obligations, focusing on building trust and providing seniors with the confidence that their interests, legacies, and family futures are secure. Seniors who have dedicated years to building their lives deserve the unwavering support that attorneys like me offer. The impact of estate planning attorneys is profound, shaping seniors' journeys beyond rules to encompass dignity, legacy, and cherished family bonds. For those seeking a dedicated estate planning attorney, I encourage you to consider Ball Morse Lowe. Let us guide you in safeguarding your loved ones, preserving your legacy, and navigating your family's future with care and expertise.

But here's the thing: don't wait until it's too late. Reach out to us now at Ball Morse Lowe, and together, we'll start securing the future your family deserves.

Best Wishes,

BECKY IVINS Specializes in

Becky knows that moving from a lifelong home to a more manageable residence can be confusing and stressful for older adults. That’s why the longtime Oklahoma City Realtor has developed a program that specializes in making the move smoother. Ivins calls the program “Seniors on the Move.”

“I have a great resource for almost anything a client would need,” Ivins said.

Her team at Movers Real Estate works with vendors to provide all the services a downsizing client would need – from home repairs to staging, cleaning, estate sales, legal matters, sorting, packing, and moving.

“Most people don’t know what to do with their ‘stuff.’ They want to keep it all, but they just can’t keep everything as they downsize and move into a smaller space,” Ivins said. “I take them from whatever position they are in and am able to coordinate with my trusted partners.”

One of those partners is Shelley Chappell, owner of Clutter Free, which offers cleaning and organizing. Shelley states, “Becky and her team are so wonderful and pleasant to work with. I have the utmost admiration for them. They are fast, they are effective, and they care. They treat their business partners like family.”

Customize Your Retirement

Town Village Retirement Community knows that there are many lifestyles and that no one fits into a mold. This hidden gem of Oklahoma City offers both Independent and Assisted Living and makes the transition from one to another easier than ever. Residents are not separated by their lifestyles, but can transition seamlessly in the community where they have already established relationships and routines that can easily continue.

Restaurant style meals are a favorite part of life at Town Village. Nancy Tarpley, Assisted Living Resident said that Town Village was chosen for her by her children after a stay in rehab. At first, she was really hesitant to leave her home and change her living situation. But, she has been so happy here and is most grateful for how friendly the Residents and Staff are. She does say that her favorite thing about living here is the good food!

Some favorite amenities include frequent outings to community events such as theaters, casinos, murder mystery dinners and so much more. In house you’ll find a movie theater, billiard room, 24 hour gym, on-site therapy services, covered parking, a convenience store, and more! The schedule is jam packed with opportunities to live a full life.

Most services are all included in one price including meals, housekeeping, maintenance, linen, service, transportation to and from doctor appointments and more.

Kathy Beaver (and her Kitty, Kit Kat) Independent Living Resident told us that the first time she visited she knew right away this was the place for her and decided to make a split decision to move here. She has not regretted her decision at all and says her apartment is not just an apartment, it is her home. She says that she feels like she is treated like “royalty” here and that she feels heard and understood. She is so impressed with the staff’s kindness and helpful spirit. Her favorite things are the friendships she has made with

the other Residents, how pretty her home is, the fact she can have her cat here... and she is happy to not have to do housekeeping.

Town Village offers Studio, 1 & 2 Bedroom Apartments. Some apartments are being renovated and are available to prelease now! The newly remodeled apartment homes feature all of the modern finishes that you are looking for including granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.

Stop by for a tour and see for yourself, or follow Town Village on Facebook to see what they are up to today. You will probably want to be there for what is happening tomorrow!

Building Stronger Bones Building Stronger Bones

Mary Martin learned about OsteoStrong through the book “Life Force” by Tony Robbins. After researching the company, visiting some Osteostrong centers, and attending the annual conference in Orlando, Mary knew that she needed to make this bone strengthening business available to Oklahoma City!

“I came out of retirement because I want to share this life-changing system with as many people as possible” Mary said. “It really sounds too good to be true. Sweat free, pain free, and only about 10 minutes once per week for amazing results!”

You’re probably asking, “What is it?” OsteoStrong features a three-tier strategy for fracture reduction. As Mary explains, “We improve your bone density so your bones are less likely to fracture. We increase your strength so you are more able to decelerate the impact of a fall, and we improve balance so you are more able to prevent falls from happening.”

Dr. John Jaquish designed devices that could create the ideal set of triggers to achieve these results. His patented machines provide brief osteogenic events that together take less than 10 minutes a week, yet are powerful enough to stimulate new bone and muscle tissue growth. Osteogenic loading, when done properly, can improve bone density, muscle strength and balance in staggering ways. What’s more surprising is that it works for people of all ages. OsteoStrong is not a gym, diet, supplement, pharmaceutical or medical treatment. OsteoStrong is a unique

place where you can go to improve your overall health by focusing on the one thing that we all have in common, our skeletal system.

OsteoStrong has peer-reviewed, double-blind studies showing the effectiveness of its Spectrum Equipment. Results include:

· Improved Bone Density

· Improved Strength

· Improved Balance and Agility

· Decreased Joint and Back Pain

· Reduced Risk of Fracture

· Improved Posture

· Improved Athletic Performance

In addition to the bone-strengthening equipment, OsteoStrong also offers several modalities such as Red Light Therapy, Hydromassage, PEMI Mats, and a Biocharger. “These all add to the general health and well-being of our members, and become the icing on the cake after their weekly session” says Martin.

For those looking to prevent fractures and increase bone density, OsteoStrong may be the answer. You can learn more about OsteoStrong, view members’ testimonials, and schedule your complimentary session at www.OsteoStrong.me or call 405-917-8424.

If you ask any vendor in the craft fair community, the most desired shows to partake in have large crowds, low booth rent, massive advertising and compassionate coordinators. This is exactly what the foundation of The Santa Market was modeled after.

Unhappy with the show choices available, Joan Clarke and Molly Nye decided to start a show of their own. Along with fellow coordinator Megan Nye, they found a few vendors, rented a banquet room at a local hotel, and The Santa Market was born. That one-room show has grown into one of the largest craft shows in the metro. Each year the show has added more vendors, expanded in location and increased in attendance.

Silent auction

By the third year, Molly, Joan and Megan decided that the amount of year-round work that goes into the show should benefit a cause very close to them. Joan’s husband and Megan’s father, Russ, passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2007. Molly suggested they make The Santa Market a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association of Oklahoma. In the twelve years since, the show has raised over $265,000.00 for Alzheimer’s. It is a Gold Level Sponsor of the OKC Walk to End Alzheimer’s; and in 2015, The Santa Market received the Channel 4 Pay It Forward Award. In 2019, The Santa Market, Inc. was formed and is now a certified 501(c)(3).

The Santa Market is one of the best holiday shopping events of the year. This year it will be held at the OKC State Fair, Park Pavilion Building. While it is three ladies who work tirelessly to run The Santa Market, it could not be done without all the help of the quality vendors, loyal customers, volunteers, sponsors and donors. The organizers call it The Santa Market Family, and we hope you will be a part of it.
