Looking Back. Moving Forward.

As we celebrate 30 years of the Oklahoma Senior Journal, it’s as good a time as ever to commemorate an anniversary of our own.

In 1959, a group of thoughtful community members chose to invest in the future of Oklahoma City. Leaders from 10 local congregations of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod recognized that as the city grew, more families would be in need of housing resources to accommodate older adults.

They were diligent and good stewards of this endeavor and finally saw their hopes and dreams come to fruition. In 2007, Lutheran Senior Citizens, Inc. opened Concordia Life Care Community. This faithbased, not-for-profit retirement community provides a full continuum of care options to its residents and the community at large.

This active and vibrant communi-

ty features people of all faiths and backgrounds. Our beautiful 15-acre campus features apartment and cottages homes to inspiring residents that are proud to call Concordia their home. Our residents come from all over and are equally committed to continuing Concordia’s mission and encouraging each new neighbor to get involved and feel connected. Concordia’s staff members are equally committed to serving senior adults, delivering exceptional care and compassion to all.

In the climate of uncertainty we have all experienced over the past few years, it’s reassuring to see an unwavering example of stewardship and commitment. As we celebrate 15 years of service, we gratefully reflect on the sacrifices and dedication that have paved the way for our future. While looking back on the blessings we’ve received, we also move forward with an exciting next chapter, including the future construction of our Pastor Harold Kaman Chapel Expansion. This project will be a beautiful addition

Provided Residents enjoy a creative arts class Rendering of our chapel expansion

to our community and allow us to serve both our residents and Oklahoma City community.

The greatest blessing of all is our wonderful residents. Concordia residents have rich backgrounds and a wealth of experience to share. One of their favorite opportunities is to give back to others. Whether it is spending time with volunteers from the Junior League or local churches, gaining knowledge from visits by the Alzheimer’s Association, American Heart Association, or the HUGS project, residents are eager to learn and grow by investing in others.

Our residents constantly engage in meaningful activities such as camaraderie with neighbors, exploring new venues with treasured

friends, or hosting guests in their homes.

For the past 15 years, Concordia residents have valued the peace of mind our Life Plan retirement option offers them and their families, so they can relax and enjoy all that life has to offer. As we continue to move forward, we’re excited to welcome new residents and help them enjoy what they love most in life. Are you interested in the peace of mind and active lifestyle that Concordia offers?

We are ecstatic to celebrate 30 years of providing excellent service and guidance in family caregiving to the 50+ generation and their adult children! It has been our mission to be the best and most experienced experts in our field.

The Oklahoma Senior Journal (OSJ) had humble beginnings with genuine intentions to be a love gift from me to my mother, Bobbie Gunn. She lovingly cared for her late mother, Laura Diffey, and husband, my dear late father, Gordon C. Gunn. My mother’s love and dedication as a caregiver inspired me to create the OSJ as a useful tool for all caregivers.

In this issue of the OSJ, we are thrilled and more than proud to be featuring “Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinic.” This is an outstanding company that has also made it their mission to help and serve the 50+ community with their life-changing treatment for neuropathic pain. Please be sure to read on pages 9-13 about their groundbreaking practices and quality service for seniors and those suffering from neuropathy.

Because of our passion to assist seniors, we have been in the senior expo business for the last 30 years. This year, we will spearhead and sponsor the largest senior expo in the Central Midwest, the “Second Half Expo: Everything for the 50+ Generation.” The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum will be the location for the October 2023 Expo. Find more information about the expo at www.secondhalfexpo.com. Learn more

about the Rise and Thrive OSJ Radio Hour and our OSJ App on page 8!

The OSJ has brought on board for the first time a Director of Business Expansion, Angel Myers. She has been a huge asset to the OSJ and our 30th OSJ Anniversary issue showing her dynamic expertise! Also, check page 25 to see Angel’s “The Event House” as seen on HGTV’s “House Hunters“ which ran on 11/8/22.

We are so pleased to be a part of your journey to becoming informed and educated about all of the quality services and resources that are accessible to you or a loved one in need. As always, we’re available for consultation, and here to make the process of caring for a loved one as easy as possible for you. Remember to work smarter, not harder by relying on us, The Oklahoma Senior Journal, to help you find what you need as we are the experts in our field.

Experience Life Renewed

An estimated 20 million Americans are living with chronic pain due to neuropathy. Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinic, helps Oklahomans renew their quality of life through proven nerve pain treatments that provide safe and effective relief. At Nerve Renewal, their mission is to help Oklahomans reduce neuropathy pain and regain healthy feeling in their feet and hands so that they can walk with confidence, sleep without restlessness, and reclaim their joy, mobility, and independence. Nerve Renewal’s goal is to get the word out and make this treatment known to all who are suffering from the affliction of neuropathy.

A Vision for the Future

Tim Bales, CEO and Director of Business Development of Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinic in Oklahoma City, recognized the need for chronic nerve damage and pain treatment in Oklahoma because of a chance encounter with an acquaintance who had received this fairly unknown treatment for nerve pain. This procedure had been around for many years but was rarely used in Oklahoma. Based on the encouraging testimony regarding the benefits of the treatment, Bales saw the great potential to help others in the community who are

afflicted with this chronic ailment using this promising procedure. He clearly understood that the need would be very extensive, and there were not many dedicated clinics offering this service at the time. Bales’ vision for Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinic is derived from his sincere interest to see Oklahomans have access to this innovative treatment for neuropathy.

Groundbreaking

Beginning

As a successful business man for 30 plus years, Bales set out to establish a facility for those suffering from neuropathy; and in March of 2022, Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinic opened its doors to the public in Oklahoma City. Because this facility opened after the onset

11 © Oklahoma Senior Journal 2022-2023

of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Bales was able to implement various safety protocols and precautions to ensure the safety and comfort of patients and staff.

Focusing on our Seniors

While the treatments offered for neuropathic pain at Nerve Renewal are available to all who seek relief, seniors are one of the key reasons for their passionate focus on making sure that their services are easily accessible. For the convenience of seniors and their family members, Nerve Renewal offers extended hours to provide better accessibility for treatment. Treatments at Nerve Renewal are Medicare and VA approved. They want to provide the chance for every senior in need of pain relief from neuropathy to have the opportunity to regain more indepen dence and return to the life they want.

One particular concern that Bales had was regarding neuropathy patients who operate vehicles on a regular basis, often unaccompanied. Their safety can be a concern, depending on the severity of the patient’s condition. In some cases, neuropathic pain may even render driving impossible. Afflicted seniors especially may need help with transportation to receive treatment; therefore, Nerve Renewal wants family members to be able to easily utilize their services to assist their loved one. Bales said, “We are dedicated to helping our seniors by ensuring them that

they would have easy access to a convenient location.” He expressed that the need to expand and assist seniors suffering with neuropathy is currently one of their priorities. Fortunately, there are plans in the works to open two new facilities, one in South West Oklahoma City and the other in Midwest City by the end of 2022.

Well-trained, Quality Medical Professionals

All of the medical staff go through extensive training led by Scoglietti who provides several weeks of instruction and demonstrations. These include shadowing and hands-on oversight for each patient’s treatment. Scoglietti is committed to helping patients receive effective treatment, in addition to developing more medical professionals with the skills to effectively treat neuropathy. Due to the quality of care and beneficial treatments at the clinic, Scoglietti’s mother, a senior who suffers from neuropathy, will be moving from Florida to Oklahoma to begin her treatment plan with Nerve Renewal.

A Warm, Inviting Environment to Receive the Highest Quality of Care

It has always been essential to Bales to employ people with experience in neurology who prefer

12 © Oklahoma Senior Journal 2022-2023

to work in a smaller setting. Their employees should be personable, relatable, and able to connect with the patients during their visits. “We want our patients to feel welcomed and comfortable with our staff when they come in for treatment,” Bales explained. With this in mind, Nerve Renewal was fortunate to find a great medical leader for the team, APRN-CNP Certified Lea Scoglietti. Scoglietti has a background in neurology for inpatient and outpatient procedures, including six years of experience with those afflicted with neuropathic pain. She has a great ability to connect with each patient and put them at ease during their treatment. She is passionate about helping patients find relief from their pain and a new hope to return to the life they want.

Has Neuropathy Derailed Your Life?

Bales explains, “Chronic pain from neuropathy has touched all of our lives in one way or another by either personal experience or knowing someone who has suffered with it.” A basic understanding of neuropathy is that it is a disorder of the peripheral nerves, which connect the spinal cord to the muscles, skin, and internal organs. Neuropathy usually affects the hands and feet and causes

weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain. People may also report burning sensations, leg cramps, loss of balance, muscle weakness, and sensitivity to touch. Neuropathy may come and go, progress over time, or even become severe and debilitating. Dealing with the pain is unrelenting, and those with this pain often lack confidence while moving around the house or going outside. Remarkably, after beginning treatments, patients quickly start to notice significant improvements in quality of restorative sleep and their abilities to perform daily activities. Bales adds, “Regaining the feeling in the appendages allows them to reclaim their confidence, and they are able to return to the life they desire.”

A New and Innovative Treatment Solution

According to the article “Neuropathy Pain Treatments using Electroanalgesia (EA)” by Neuro Med (lunabeckmd.com/neuropathicreatment), studies show that 80% of patients experience a long-term reduction in pain without surgery or medication through the use of proven Electroanalgesia treatments, which offer pain relief by using specialized electromagnetic fields. These currents block the pain signal in the affected part of

13 © Oklahoma Senior Journal 2022-2023

the body, providing lasting relief.

Traditional neuropathy treatments, such as surgery and strong pain medications, can have a severe impact on patients’ longterm health. Too many people have been told there is nothing that can be done for their pain, numbness, and tingling due to their neuropathy. Often, they have been prescribed medications that only numb the pain but rarely lead to complete recovery or normal sensitivity. Electroanalgesia treatments reduce pain without the drawbacks of invasive procedures or addictive medications. This treatment addresses the pain symptoms directly, rather than masking them through drug treatments.

To the benefit of many, Electroanalgesia is available at Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinic. The clinic specializes in using Electroanalgesia to treat nerve pain

After a treatment at Nerve Renewal, I can get up and do whatever I need to do. It’s painless, and it is worth just being pain free, and knowing I’m going to be able to walk around and enjoy my grandkids and spend time with them. It’s amazing, and the staff at Nerve Renewal is fantastic! They treat you like you’re family. - Dana Lewis

What to Expect

The initial consultation consists of a one-on-one conversation with a medical team member to discuss the need for treatment. Nerve Renewal then creates a customized long-term treatment plan for reducing pain. Scoglietti explains that she and the medical team work with each patient to determine the best course of action by tailoring therapy sessions to address the individual’s specific issues. After this thorough initial assessment, treatment is initiated. The patient is treated while seated on a comfortable recliner. The medical professional places suction cups on the affected area, and the procedure begins. According to Scoglietti, “The procedure is essentially painless; however, during the course of treatment, a patient may experience a slight pins and needles sensation.” The intensity can be regulated to minimize any discomfort. The typical duration of a treatment session is 30 minutes. Remarkably, there is no recovery downtime, so the patient can resume their normal day.

Duration of Treatment

(shoulders, knees and back), peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (CIPN). Treatments at Nerve Renewal reduce the symptoms of nerve damage and restore the ability to perform daily activities.

At Nerve Renewal, patients generally receive 12-24 treatments over a 5-12 week period. For the best possible outcome, it is important that the patients complete the full course as recommended since the effects are cumulative. If deemed necessary, exercise routines are

Nerve Renewal 405.495.9270 14 © Oklahoma Senior Journal 2022-2023

recommended to supplement the therapy at home. Most patients notice a remarkable difference after the second treatment and often continue to see favorable results over time. Typically, a patient is required to receive treatments twice a week for a total of 12 weeks. One aspect of the treatment plan may include a weekly balance test to assess the level of improvement. Scoglietti says, “The treatment timeline is adjusted based on the patient’s needs because the procedure is not a permanent cure but is more of an ongoing maintenance therapy.”

Mobility, Freedom, Hope and Nerve Renewal

Nerve Renewal provides one of the best options to treat neuropathic pain for seniors. They want to provide the best quality care and treatment and are passionate about facilitating a change for the better in their patients and their quality of life. To better help seniors in the community, Nerve Renewal is routinely seeking guidance and mentorship from the local nonprofit organization, Villages OKC. They find a deep connection with their mission to help seniors live life with minimal assistance, and they are excited about this shared priority with Villages OKC. Nerve Renewal feels their missions are seamless, and it is their desire to gain experience, knowledge, and mentorship from Villages OKC. Nerve Renewal’s representatives

It was after the second treatment that I really noticed a big difference. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful with any questions you may have. I’d had it looked at before, and the doctor said the only thing that he could do would be to do surgery on it. This so far has really seemed to help with that pain; and hopefully I can stay away from any surgery.

BECKY IVINS Specializes in Downsizing

Becky knows that moving from a lifelong home to a more manageable residence can be confusing and stressful for older adults. That’s why the longtime Oklahoma City Realtor has developed a program that specializes in making the move smoother. Ivins calls the program “Seniors on the Move.”

“I have a great resource for almost anything a client would need,” Ivins said.

Her team at Movers Real Estate works with vendors to provide all the services a downsizing client would need – from home repairs to staging, cleaning, estate sales, legal matters, sorting, packing, and moving.

“Most people don’t know what to do with their ‘stuff.’ They want to keep it all, but they just can’t keep everything as they downsize and move into a smaller space,” Ivins said. “I take them from whatever position they are in and am able to coordinate with my trusted partners.”

One of those partners is Shelley Chappell, owner of Clutter Free, which offers cleaning and organizing. Shelley states, “Becky and her team are so wonderful and pleasant to work with. I have the utmost admiration for them. They are fast, they are effective, and they care. They treat

their business partners like family.”

Ivins began selling real estate in 1977. In 1979, she started her own brokerage, Movers Real Estate. One of a very few who have earned the Certified Senior Housing Professional designation, she is active in coaching other real estate agents.

Since 2006, Ivins has hosted a live radio talk show, “Oklahoma Real Estate On the Move,” on KTOK News Radio 1000 every Saturday morning at 8:05 a.m. Ivins has been endorsed by national figures Barbara Corcoran (of the TV show “Shark Tank”), Dave Ramsey, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity.

Becky’s goal is to simplify the process for seniors in transition, helping them to make it through those changes so that they can get right into enjoying the next stage of life.

Arrow Senior Living Advisors is

located in the Oklahoma City Metro area and provides high-quality, compassionate, and assisted placement services for any senior, regardless of their situation or financial status. The company’s founder, Matt Wilson, a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA), started the company in the fall of 2021. Matt, who has been in the senior living industry for 20 years, observed numerous families struggling to make educated and quality decisions for themselves or the care of their loved ones. Matt was inspired to aid these families and founded Arrow Senior Living Advisors. This company provides a team of expert advisors who advocate for seniors and guide families through what can be a challenging and stressful time. At Arrow, they offer resources to families searching for senior retirement living communities such as Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care in Oklahoma.

Research, Insight, and Direction

Arrow Senior Living Advisors have already done the challenging groundwork for the client by vetting and researching the various retirement communities in the area. Arrow advisors have personally visited each community to examine its capabilities, amenities, services, and associated expenses. By taking a personal, hands-on approach with the client, Arrow makes it remarkably easy for families to make wise decisions when choosing the optimal senior living community. The options of communities they provide are Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. During an in-person visit or over the phone, the advisor conducts an assessment with the client, determining their budget, desired location, healthcare needs, social needs, and other lifestyle preferences. After the assessment, the advisor facilitates coordinated tours of the top

“ Finding a great senior living community for Mom was overwhelming. We made a lot of mistakes and our frantic search put a great deal of stress on her at a time when she needed us to support her with calmness and confidence. Then, we talked to Matt at Arrow Senior Living Advisors. He spent the time necessary to understand our family and pinpoint Mom’s needs. After a fact-finding interview, Matt and his team gave us several great options, making the process significantly easier. Mom loves the community she is in! Arrow transformed an overwhelming process and made it easy and seamless. One phone call to Arrow made the difference to us, and I wholeheartedly believe they can provide the help that your loved one needs.” - David Akeman

options and guides the client throughout the entire process until a selection is made. Best of all, this is a free service for families throughout Oklahoma.

OLLI @ O SU: LEARNING NEVER RETIRES

We don’t stop learning when we leave school. You might even say that learning is a lifelong endeavor. That’s exactly what the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Oklahoma State University says. It’s all right there in the name.

OLLI @ OSU keeps seniors active and social through classes, lectures, workshops, travel opportunities and special events. This member-driven program is designed for adults age 50 or better who are interested in enriching their lives by expanding intellectual experiences. With no tests and no grades, members pursue learning for pure pleasure.

“As we get older, learning creates excitement for life and wakes up the mind. You are engaged with the people and the world around you,” said Mona Long, a long-time member and regular OLLI student.

OLLI @ OSU offers in-person courses in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Bartlesville and Stillwater. If you prefer an online option, OLLI provides Zoom classes, reaching students all over the state and beyond Oklahoma’s borders.

OLLI @ OSU offers classes in the fall, spring and summer. Most classes are one day a week at either 10 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. and run for as little as 2 weeks and as long as 8 weeks. Single classes are also an option.

Volunteer instructors include current and retired OSU faculty, museum and facility directors from across the state, authors, historians, astrophysicists, medical professionals, musicians, artists and other subject-matter experts.

All programming is funded through memberships and donations. Memberships are $40 (a la carte annual membership) or $200 (premium annual membership, including unlimited courses). For more information, visit olli.okstate.edu, email OLLI@okstate.edu or call 405-744-5868.

OKLAHOMA SENIOR GAMES

The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

The Oklahoma Senior Games are wonderful because they help keep me fit and bring me instant friends, who over time become best friends because we share a common interest.

City or local senior games are held in the late-winter, spring and summer. This is where I sharpen my skills and prepare for the Oklahoma Senior Games held on weekends during the months of September and October.

There are so many games from which to choose. The best part is that I have a whole year to prepare. That is their purpose.

I set a goal for myself then work toward it. The concept is simple and the rewards are GREAT. Last year, one of my goals was to run the 400-meter dash, one lap around the track. It is a dash and takes speed and endurance. I did not want to humiliate myself with a poor performance. With the extreme heat we experience every summer, I had to figure out an effective way to train.

The solution turned out to be fun and quite easy. I trained almost every day between a half hour and an hour in Norman’s Lazy River at the Westwood Family Aquatic Center. Running in 3-foot-deep water took the pressure off my joints and improved my cardiovascular condition while I stayed comfortably cool in the water.

I was pleasantly surprised when October 1st arrived. I was able to step right up to the starting line with confidence and run 400 meters. I was not the fastest runner, but I did finish and reached the goal I set for myself in June. My goal for next year is to run faster. There is always a carrot at the end of my stick.

I encourage EVERYONE to choose a sport, set a goal and work toward having a healthy life.

If you ask any vendor in the craft fair community, the most desired shows to partake in have large crowds, low booth rent, massive advertising and compassionate coordinators. This is exactly what the foundation of The Santa Market was modeled after.

Unhappy with the show choices available, Joan Clarke and Molly Nye decided to start a show of their own. Along with fellow coordinator Megan Nye, they found a few vendors, rented a banquet room at a local hotel, and The Santa Market was born. That one-room show has grown into one of the largest craft shows in the metro. Each year the show has added more vendors, expanded in location and increased in attendance.

By the third year, Molly, Joan and Megan decided that the amount of year-round work that goes into the show should benefit a cause very close to them. Joan’s husband and Megan’s father, Russ, passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2007. Molly suggested they make The Santa Market a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association of Oklahoma. In the nine years since, the show has raised over $220,000.00 for Alzheimer’s. It is a Gold Level Sponsor of the OKC Walk to End Alzheimer’s; and in 2015, The Santa Market received the Channel 4 Pay It Forward Award. In 2019, The Santa Market, Inc. was formed and is now a certified 501(c)(3). The Santa Market is one of the best holiday shopping events of the year. This year it will be held at the OKC State Fair, Park Pavilion Building. While it is three ladies who work tirelessly to run The Santa Market, it could not be done without all the help of the quality vendors, loyal customers, volunteers, sponsors and donors. The organizers call it The Santa Market Family, and we hope you will be a part of it.
