Creating an aesthetically pleasing interior for a 7,655square-foot model home priced at almost $9 million in Wellington, FL, is no small project to take on. But Winter Park-based design firm Beasley & Henley designed this one to appeal to prospective buyers with loads of effortless luxury and all the modern comforts.

52

TRADITIONAL WITH A TWIST

Charged with creating a warm and welcoming home for a couple of empty nesters who entertain their grandchildren regularly, Ashley Martin Home designed and renovated a spacious 4,547-square-foot, 19-room home located on Lake Butler in Windermere. The fairly comprehensive project featured a traditional aesthetic with a twist.

A local homeowner loved her mid-century modern home on a spacious property, but it needed updating. Award-winning builder and architect Phil Kean was called in to make it happen, but he found much more than a remodel was needed to bring it back to life.

My painting Fragile Universe was created during the first month of COVID isolation when I spent most days in my garden, planting flowers and herbs, and many nights on the deck looking at the stars. Getting my hands in the dirt grounded me and helped me quiet the ongoing chatter and expand into silence. It is from this same contemplative place that I paint when in my studio. So much of my work is inspired by nature and this unexpected gift of time in my garden continues to influence my painting process. – Audrey Phillips 6

After meeting at Louisiana State University and moving back to Orlando, a newlywed couple decided to build their dream home in College Park. CA: Were you given any specific criteria or were you given carte blanche? AMF: The homeowners love neutrals and were mostly drawn to understated looks with small pops of glam or rustic details, so we worked with them in the beginning to find their unique style. Once we presented the first round of designs and all the major selections were approved, they realized we understood what they liked, and we then had carte blanche to fill in all the details. AMF: Seeing our clients’ reactions is always my favorite part of every job. This project was special because the last time the homeowners saw the house before the reveal, it was empty. We came in with all the furniture and décor, lit the fireplace, put on music, and laid out a charcuterie board with champagne on ice. When they walked in, our design team and the builder were there to greet them and tour them through each room. We toasted to a successful project and their beautiful new home; it was truly a special night and such a joy to see them so happy.

REIMAGINING THE HOME OFFICE FOR OUR NEW REALITY 5 TIPS FOR A PRODUCTIVE WORKSPACE by Karen

LeBlanc

For months, many of us have been working from home as COVID-19 keeps us out of the office and socially distanced. Face-to-face meetings have gone virtual via Zoom, Skype and other popular online platforms. The pandemic’s sudden onset and seismic upheaval in the workforce had many employees scrambling to cobble together temporary workspaces, perhaps a dining room table or kitchen countertop. Half a year into this new reality, we realize our makeshift workspace is now mandatory for conducting business. Working from home is here to stay, at least in the immediate future.

EnTERTAINING

family supper by 34

Chef Jamie McFadden

Dependent on what part of the country or world you grew up may determine the vocabulary used to describe your evening meal. Being raised in the Midwest, our family always referred to any form of a meal consumed after 5pm as supper. Dinner was specific to a Sunday meal, typically after Sunday services, and served between noon and 3pm. Lunch was consumed daily between 11am and 2pm. So how did supper become dinner? It actually did not.

EnTERTAINING

U

p until the mid-1800s, dinner referred to a midday meal, while supper served as a light evening meal for those need-

ing additional nutrition after a hard day’s work. In the medieval period, the hours of devotion influenced mealtime customs as well. Monks ate nine hours after daybreak which translated roughly between noon and 3pm. Supper, in terms of word origins, is associated with the evening. It comes from the Old French word souper, meaning evening meal, a noun based on a verb meaning to eat or serve a meal. Regardless of what verbiage describes your evening meal, I am assuming that by this stage of our country’s coronavirus challenges you may be ready for some exciting and new recipes to prepare for your family. The last few months have created many hardships, obstacles and new normals for everyone. I’ve heard from multiple friends and colleagues that having college kids back at their kitchen table on a nightly basis has been somewhat shall we say costly, fun and entertaining all rolled into one. Funny how one has no problem eating Ramen noodles when away at school, but once back at Mom and Dads it’s are we grilling steaks tonight? We? Who’s flipping the bill at the butcher shop, or actually preparing the grill for this deliciously expensive dinner? So, let’s take a look at some dining options to jazz up your family meals and possibly get the rest of your crew involved in the planning and/or preparation. If you have yet to prepare breakfast for supper at least a couple of times a month you are definitely missing out. Chilled strawberry soup to begin, followed by a mouth-watering frittata, and then for dessert Bananas Foster French toast. The total prep time for the above menu is under an hour, and the meal is a crowd pleaser. Wishing you and your families good health and happiness, and always remember to entertain deliciously! GUE ST BE D R O OM We transformed this former storage room above a carriage house-style garage in Winter Park into a luxury “hotel quality” guest apartment. This was found real estate that now serves as a wonderful retreat for short- or long-term guests. With its own outside entrance, it now includes a sitting area with flatscreen television and writing desk/workspace, queen size bed, kitchenette, and full bath with closet. Furnished in durable fabrics, we chose a rich color palette of clay-based tones, watery blues, and teals, which is appropriate for guests of all ages.

BAT H R O OM The client purchased a larger home, built in 1926 and remodeled over the years. The guest bath was very traditional, and the client wanted a more contemporary uncluttered lifestyle. The selection process was easy: rich, classic finishes that will stand the test of time. The completed bath offers a simple design and easy maintenance with anti-spot glass in the shower. There is also Bluetooth capability within the vent/fan allowing for personal music selection.

K I TCHE N/FA M ILY R O OM This 1950s country French home had good bones and a classic style, but the interior was chopped up, dark and dated. The entire home was gutted and additions on both sides allowed for this completely reimagined kitchen/family room. With all new cabinets, double islands, gourmet appliances, and a custom hood, the kitchen opens up to a spacious family room with a fireplace and TV. Stained white oak floors and a neutral palette unify the spaces and a dramatic ceiling with hand-crafted stained beams adds drama — both areas have views and access to the porch, pool and backyard.

BLAINE JOHNATHAN PHOTOGRAPHY Creating an aesthetically pleasing interior for a 7,655square- foot model home priced at almost $9 million in Wellington is no small project to take on. But Winter Park-based design firm Beasley & Henley designed this one to appeal to prospective buyers with loads of effortless luxury with all the modern comforts. The design team provided all interior design, a modern minimalist approach including soothing neutral colors, custom architectural details and a beautiful medley of interesting raw and refined furnishings.

“Both the dining and wine areas are front and center as you can see. The dining room packs a punch with the oversized chandelier from Visual Comfort and I felt the walls needed some panel details to provide a level of comfort and sophistication. The gray-tone wood flooring that I used under the table (table and chairs from Hickory Chair) was pulled up onto the ceiling and added between the beams for additional continuity and warmth. The artwork adds the necessary color balance to this room, and then the homeowners, their wine, and guests provide the rest. The wine cellar stands to be a strong focal element when you enter this residence. The design grabs onto some of the architectural elements of the home design and is rather striking in iron framework, Troy says.

brings a sense of grandeur to the space; a luxuriously appointed chef’s kitchen that features two-tone oak cabinets finished with light bronzed hardware, polished Calcutta marble countertops and waterfall edge; and elegant light oak flooring in the main living areas. With 6,656 square feet of indoor space and an additional 1,000 for outdoor living, the home — The Wellington — has five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms. Designer Troy Beasley was given full reins from top to bottom and start to finish. “I had carte blanche. I designed it and presented the ideas to the developer and the concept was approved, trigger was pulled, and 18 months later, we installed it! I started the design process by thinking about both the client profile and the architectural style of the residence. It’s more of a vacation-type client who likes to entertain and spends time enjoying the outdoors,” he says. Troy describes the overall style as a modern approach with transitional elements that lend to a warmer, softer and very livable space. The furnishings feature a mix of beautiful wood tones and sumptuous fabrics with an eclectic mixture of decorative lighting to complement each room. Fresh pops of color in the art-

sleek sofa ideal for enjoying the outdoor fireplace, and a large dining table for entertaining in the outdoor kitchen. “There were two areas really that were new to my bag of tricks. One was this interesting approach to the foyer ceiling. I designed it with offset coffered panels and stained the entire ceiling for warmth. It turned out really cool in my opinion. The second thing was designing the kitchen with a varied duel-tone finish with two different stains. I love how this came out as well, and how it became a very defined architectural feature of the home,” he explains. There were things to love in every room. In addition to the stellar kitchen, the main living room stands out with meticulous details. “This is your first impression. It’s sophisticated and comfortable with a lounge-type atmosphere anchored by a steel-faced fireplace design and flanked by a built-in to the left. The view is critical here, so furnishings were selected to allow you to take full advantage. I kept the seating arrangement low so that upon entry into the house, your eye carries over the seating arrangement and captures the view outside. Modern lighting floats overhead and is suspended from a stepped design I incorporated into the ceiling recess. The artwork hangs behind the sofa and brings in a pop of color and introduces an air of elegance to this room,” he adds. Another favorite area for the designer is the game room. “I painted the walls blue and punched up the flooring with a striped carpet with pops of orange,” he shares. As for any particular challenges with the project, Troy says, “Budgets are always a challenge. We like to be as creative as possible and use the very best materials that we can given the market value of the home. I think we pulled it off rather well!”

Opposite, top: The master bedroom is nice and large, yet comfortable with furnishings scaled appropriately and ceiling details designed to bring the architecture down. The bed is from Theodore Alexander and the dresser, nightstands and bench are from Bernhardt. Wood flooring is carried into the room and the woven rug is placed under the bed to anchor the furnishings and provide a soft-landing pad when you pop out of bed. Colors used throughout are mostly neutral with a dash of green introduced in the fabrics as well as the artwork. Opposite, center: For the master bath, Troy selected a marble mosaic flooring as the main central feature, not to be outdone by the floating tub that sits directly in front of the window. He warmed it up with a darker stained cabinetry but kept it clean with the lighter marble countertop. Full mirrors reflect the contemporary lighting and the glass-enclosed shower on the opposing wall. Opposite, bottom: The game room includes painted shiplap siding to maintain a casual element, a wet bar, a billiard table for gaming, a large flat screen TV with surround sound, and a great view to the pool. For this playroom Ashley wanted to create a space that was both youthful and stylish. The vibrant pom pom “play” sign and colorful pillows coupled with the neutral floor, warm leather sofa and heavily textured rug, create the perfect kid-friendly playroom that will stand the test of time.

“Each room is well-appointed and honest to our clients’ needs and taste, making the interior personal yet balanced. The owners’ last home was Mediterranean with darker tones. Their new home is more traditional, and nothing says traditional than blue and white colors. Everything was new on the first floor of the home, and on the second floor we redesigned the grandkids bedroom and playroom. The guest bedroom furniture was my design from their former residence and blended beautifully into the design of the new home,” Ashley says. It was a smooth process from start to finish that had a happy ending for everyone.

For this kids room, it was important to create a design that was gender neutral and age-appropriate, yet still able to grow and mature with the kids. The playful bedding and colorful rug give the space appropriate youthfulness while the white and gold accents provide a timeless design foundation that can be adapted with growth. The use of the children’s initials as part of the wall décor added the perfect touch of personalization to the room. 56

A local homeowner loved her mid-century modern home on a spacious property, but it needed updating. Award-winning builder and architect Phil Kean was called in to make it happen, but he found much more than a remodel was needed to bring it back to life. In the main living and dining areas the floors were updated with 24" x 48" porcelain tiles from Emil America by Ergon in mineral grey. Accents include the updated stone feature wall complemented by the sleek fireplace surround in White Thasos marble. The gold six-light Bensley chandelier is from Allmodern. The striking front door is painted in Benjamin Moore Eccentric Lime (2017-30) and is illuminated with Galaxy sconces from Rejuvenation. The walls are clad in cypress from Synergy Wood in Colonial finish. The stone (interior and exterior) is from Environmental Stoneworks.

T

he expansive project included the main home — about 3,700 square feet under air and 4,800 under roof — with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, plus a pool bath. In addition, there was a guest home over a garage bay turned into a home gym, with two bedrooms and a small living and kitchen

area. Entertaining and hosting family was a significant driving factor of the updated design and the smooth transition from indoors to out was carefully planned to maximize views, including the lakefront. “Upon starting the project, we found that all structures on the property were not engineered properly and that the detached guest home was not even permitted. We had to tear down the main home and the detached garage and build new. Since the client loved the original home, we kept the style, raised the ceilings, gave it a new interior layout, slightly expanded the footprint and created a courtyard off a guest room,” Phil says. The guest home was re-engineered and structurally reinforced on the exterior, leaving the interior intact. In order to keep the detached garage as a separate structure, as the building code only allowed two structures on the property, the main home and guest home had to become one structure.

60

and opens via sliding glass doors on both sides. Guests can access the pool area from the courtyard through the glass room which is also connected to the new exercise room under the guest home. “So, the final project consisted of reimagining the design of the main home, new construction of the main home, attaching it to the existing guest home and rebuilding the detached garage. When rebuilding the detached garage, again the homeowner liked the mid-century design of the original garage, so we imitated it and made the new garage taller and a little bigger. A significant amount of hardscape design and outdoor living areas connect all the structures together. Including due diligence, getting through the permitting issues and the design/build process, the project took about two years,” Phil explains. Phil Kean Design Group worked closely with the client throughout the process making sure to incorporate multiple spaces for entertaining and others for privacy. “The home was designed to be able to host family with a lot of outdoor living area for entertaining that takes advantage of the

lakefront property. Privacy for the homeowner was also import, so we created a large, secluded owners suite located on the second floor that includes a laundry room, bedroom, bathroom, closets, as well as an office that overlooks the lake. Access to the second floor is through a hidden passage concealed in a wall of panels. This concept really privatized the space for the owner,” he adds. The design team took their cues from the original home and kept with the midcentury modern style. The wood materials, bright front door, light fixtures and color combinations throughout the interior were inspired by the true aesthetic from the ’50s and ’60s. The transformation is stunning and a testament to well-thought-out design. Everyone was pleased with the results of the intensive makeover that incorporated all of the homeowners’ wishes. “The hidden owners’ suite was an interesting concept to explore. We had a lot of fun with looking at the master bath a little differently, with suspended mirrors in front of the windows and some of those mid-century details like the hairpin legs on the vanity,” Phil shares.

The spacious outdoor area makes entertaining a breeze with sitting, lounging and dining areas just steps from the pool. The Synergy Wood tongue-and-groove ceiling brings more of the natural materials outside. The same 24" x 48" porcelain tiles continue onto the lanai for a seamless flow from indoors to out.
