Des instantanés de vie de Katherine Ann aux White visions de Cuchi Cuchi White, née Katherine Ann White, est une photographe américaine connue internationalement pour son travail en couleur réalisé à partir des années soixante-dix. Lorsqu’elle reprend la photographie après un arrêt de 1958 à 1974, elle est alors très attirée par les trompel’œil qui jalonnent les rues -pas encore appelés Street Art- auxquels elle mêle à plaisir leurs cousins précurseurs les peintures murales des églises et palais. Après avoir rencontré Paolo Boni, jeune peintre italien, son futur époux, en 1949 dans l’atelier d’un sculpteur à Florence, ils émigrent à Paris en 1954, pour y vivre ensemble jusqu’à la fin de leur vie, en séjours alternés avec leur habitation-atelier d’artistes à Vallauris dans le sud de la France. La recherche photographique de Cuchi White oscillera toujours entre ces deux pôles anciens et contemporains, voir les mêlera, toujours fascinée par la magie de l’art ancien qui l’avait aimantée dès son arrivée en l’Europe. Les incongruités de la réalité, les tromperies de la perception dans une transposition toute personnelle de l’histoire de l’art et sa traduction visuelle, fruit de ses multiples héritages culturels, sont devenus ses sujets préférés. Elle a réalisé un livre sur les trompe-l’œil, un autre sur les villas de rêve de la Côte d’Azur, un troisième sur les villages perchés de la Riviera franco-italienne. À partir des années quatre-vingt-dix, elle a mené à bien un étonnant travail sur les maisons en forme de bateau, sans doute venu de sa fascination pour les transatlantiques qu’elle avait pris en aller-retour États-Unis Europe, dit Navirland ou Demeures en Partance qui a donné lieu à de nombreuses expositions. Pour le patrimoine, elle collabore avec divers musées et effectue un travail autour du fleuve Durance et sur les sentiers douaniers de Bretagne. Ce qui la fascine tout au long de son œuvre et c’est là qu’elle excelle, ce sont les échappées imaginaires que permet la simple réalité par l’acuité du cadrage et la magie d’une certaine lumière ou par le manque de celle-ci. C’est ce monde à côté de l’évidence visible qu’elle nous permet de pénétrer en nous racontant d’autres histoires riches de références culturelles classiques ou juste pour témoigner des perturbations dues à l’intrusion d’une époque dans l’autre : fausses fenêtres, sculptures, intérieurs de musées, de châteaux, d’églises, collections de 5

poupées, accumulation d’objets mais aussi sites industriels, éléments incongrus, inattendus et jeux d’ombres et lumières qui transfigurent les lieux et les rues. Avant d’arrêter la photographie suite à un accident qui a failli lui coûter la vie en juin 1997, elle avait commencé un travail sur les superpositions de double-images et une série sur les accumulations d’intérieurs baroques. Tous ceux qui l’ont fréquentée pourront témoigner de sa forte personnalité, de sa façon enjouée de prendre la vie, de son incroyable rire si communicatif et de son franc parler qui emmêlait sans façon le français, l’italien et l’anglais, mélis-mélos rendant si gais les rencontres amicales. Depuis sa première exposition à la galerie Arena en 1980 aux Rencontres internationales de la photographie d’Arles1 en France, puis son travail au musée Réattu dans la même ville, elle était une fidèle de ces rencontres très proches de ses amis et photographes italiens dont Gabriele Basilico, Kitti Bolognese, Giovanna Calvenzi, Luigi Ghirri, Mimmo Jodice, Laura Sapienza et tant d’autres. Elle partageait d’autant plus facilement ces amitiés-là que son mari, Paolo Boni artiste, était aussi italien et qu’une grande partie de leur travail et expositions de l’un ou de l’autre se déroulait en Italie. Elle participera au projet Viaggio in Italia de 1984, avec dix–neuf autres photographes2, orchestré par le photographe Luigi Ghirri, qui constitue un jalon novateur et marquant de la photographie contemporaine. Cuchi White avait déjà un excellent sens du cadrage et de la composition dès ses premiers travaux photographiques en noir et blanc. Adolescente, elle avait fait un stage auprès du photographe du Cleveland Museum of Arts. À quatorze ans, lors d’escapades newyorkaises, elle s’est imprégnée de l’esprit libérateur de la ville à travers les expositions et les musées qui nourrissaient sa passion indéfectible pour les arts. En 1947, l’exposition d’Edward Weston au musée d’Art moderne de New York la marque si fort qu’elle part rencontrer le photographe à Point Lobos. Elle achète à la librairie d’art Weyhe’s, sur Lexington avenue, des exemplaires de Camera Work, le Stieglitz Memorial Portfolio de Dorothy Norman et Time in New England de Paul Strand. Étudiante à la très progressiste université de Bennington dans le Vermont, où enseignent entre autre Max Salvadori, Erich Fromm et Martha Graham, elle y acquiert un Bachelor of Arts en 1951. À son arrivée en Italie en 1952, le journal romain Il Mondo de Pannuzio lui acheta cinquante photographies en vue de publication. en 1948 à l’une des dernières expositions de la Photo League « This is the Photo League » avec des photographies de statues brisées prises autour de l’atelier de sculpture de son université. New York était la ville américaine de cœur de la jeune photographe Katherine Ann White, née à Cleveland en 1930, plus tard connue en tant que Cuchi White. Dès qu’elle pouvait, elle arpentait la ville, armée de sa chambre 13 x 18 et de son Rolleiflex 6 x 6. La vie dans les rues et son ambiance si particulière sont ses sujets favoris. Ces images resteront marquées par une recherche humaniste et sociale attachée à montrer une présence multiraciale dans cette ville. Une forte fascination poétique pour les lieux et architectures urbaines s’amorce là et continuera, à partir des années soixante-dix, d’alimenter avec fantaisie son œuvre en couleur. From life snapshots of Katherine Ann to the White visions of Cuchi

Cuchi White, born Katherine Ann White, was an American photographer known internationally for her work in color produced from the 1970s. After a break between 1958 and 1974, when she returned to photography, she was very attracted by trompe-l’oeil now known as “Street Art”, with which she loved mixing their close precursors, the murals she discovered in churches and palaces. In 1949, she met her future husband Paolo Boni, a young Italian painter, in a sculptor’s studio in Florence. They moved to Paris in 1954, where they lived together for the rest of their lives, going between there and their house-come-studio in Vallauris, south of France. Cuchi White photographic interests always swung between the two worlds of the old and the contemporary, which she brought together at times. She was always fascinated by the magic of classical art, which had drawn her like a magnet as soon as she arrived in Europe. Her favorite subject became the incongruous aspect of reality; the tricks that vision plays in her highly personal version of the history of art and its visual expression, the fruit of the many strands of her cultural heritage. She produced a book on the trompe-l’œil; a book on the sublime villas of the Côte d’Azur and a book on the perched villages on the FrancoItalian Riviera. Beginning in the Nineties, she completed a striking series on houses built to resemble 8

ships, no doubt inspired by the transatlantic liners on which she travelled between the United States of America and Europe. Several exhibitions were devoted to this work: Navirland (The land of ships) or Demeures en Partance (Homes ready to sail). For the national heritage in France she worked with a number of museums taking photographs of the Durance river in the south-east and the sentiers des douaniers (the paths used by the customs officers) in Brittany. What fascinated her throughout her work, and where she achieved excellence, were the sights of imagination facilitated by straightforward reality: by the sharpness of framing, the magical quality of a certain type of light, or by the mere absence of that light. She gives us access to this world which exists alongside reality, by telling stories enriched by classic cultural references, or simply by highlighting the upheavals which occur when one era intrudes upon another: false windows, sculptures; interiors of museums, castles and churches; doll collections; accumulations of objects; and also industrial sites: items which are incongruous or unexpected and the play on light and shade which transforms places and streets. Following a life-threatening accident in June 1997, Cuchi stopped taking photographs, just before she began working on superimposition of double images and on a series on accumulation in baroque interiors. All those who knew her can testify to her strong personality, her lively approach to life, her amazing laugh which was so communicative and her outspokenness which blithely mixed French, Italian and English, a jumble which added much gaiety to meetings with friends. Since her first

exhibition at the Gallery Arena in 1980 at the Rencontres internationales de la photographie1 in Arles, France, and her work with the Réattu museum in the same town, she regularly attended this event. She was often with her Italian friends and photographers such as Gabriele Basilico, Kitti Bolognese, Giovanna Calvenzi, Luigi Ghirri, Mimmo Jodice, Laura Sapienza and many others. She shared those friendships all the more easily given that her husband, the artist Paolo Boni, was Italian, and a large portion of their work and many of their exhibitions of one or the other took place in Italy. In 1984, Cuchi took part of an innovative and significant milestone in contemporary photography, the Viaggio in Italia (Travelling in Italy) with nineteen other photographers2, a project initiated by the photographer Luigi Ghirri. Her first black-and-white photographs show that Cuchi White already had an excellent sense of framing and composition. As a teenager she was an intern with the photographer of the Cleveland Museum of Arts. At an age no more than fourteen on her trips to New York, she soaked up the liberating atmosphere of the city with its exhibitions and museums, nurturing her abiding passion for art. made such a strong impression on her that she travelled to Point Lobos to meet the photogra pher. At Weyhe’s art bookstore, on Lexington Avenue, she bought copies of Camera Work, Dorothy Norman’s Stieglitz Memorial Portfolio and Paul Strand’s Time in New England. Cuchi was a student at the very progressive Bennington University in Vermont where, amongst others, Max Salvadori, Erich Fromm and Martha Graham taught. In 1951 the university awarded her a degree of Bachelor of Arts. When she arrived in Italy in 1952, the Roman newspaper Il Mondo of Pannuzio bought fifty of her photographs for publishing. As a great admirer of André Kertész, Edward Weston and Paul Strand, in 1948 she took part in one of the last exhibitions of the Photo League called “This is the Photo League” with photographs of broken statues taken around the sculpture workshop at her university. New York was the American city closest to the heart of the young photographer Katherine Ann White who was born in Cleveland in 1930 and later became known as Cuchi White. She availed of every opportunity to wander about the city armed with her 13 x 18 large-format view and Rolleiflex 6 x 6 cameras. Her favorite subjects were the street life and its very special atmosphere. These pictures are stamped with the pursuit of humanist and social aspects, a pursuit which aims to show the multiracial reality of the city. A deep poetic fascination for urban places and architecture emerged at this time and continued, from the 1970s onwards, to infuse her work in color with a lively imaginative element. Cuchi White ou la subtilité frémissante des petits riens « L’Œil ébloui » : c’est ainsi qu’il y a une trentaine d’années Georges Perec avait intitulé un livre publié par les éditions du Chêne, consacré aux trompe-l’œil avec un texte de lui et des photographies de Cuchi White. Ébloui ? Oui. Enfin, oui et non. Cet œil me paraît plus en éveil qu’ébloui. Actif. Il y a là une personne, plus même qu’une photographe et, cette personne, tout l’intéresse : les illusions renversantes des trompe-l’œil, d’abord, bien sûr, ici, mais pas seulement. Il y a, aussi, à l’œuvre, une réflexion sur les pouvoirs de la photographie liée à une manière qu’a Cuchi White de faire partager son plaisir et son étonnement face à ce qu’elle voit, courant les rues, face à ce qu’elle montre, magnifie, s’effaçant, sans doute, derrière le sujet, mais s’attachant, par le cadrage, à rendre l’illusion suffisamment visible pour nous faire comprendre en quoi consiste la prouesse, en quoi la tromperie est admirable, le leurre fascinant. En même temps, nécessairement, elle doit dissimuler un peu ce qu’elle révèle et découvre, pour que, dans toute sa gloire, advienne la magie de ce qui l’a requise. Il y a là un jeu subtil de découvrement et de recouvrement, des allers-et-retours, une façon vivante de voir. Du grand art. Pas une simple « traque », comme il est dit sur la « jaquette » du livre, pas seulement une collection de merveilles. La subtilité de la photographe ne compte pas pour peu dans l’enchantement produit par ces images qui donnent à voir des simulacres, des glissements du sens, des feintes, des ruses, de petits vertiges, qui montrent comment l’œil et le cerveau se laissent piéger. Faux-semblants, les statues, faux-semblants, les colonnes, faux-semblants, les fenêtres, faux-semblants, les perspectives, les lointains, les nuages, faux-semblants, les personnages. Or, de ce travail-là, Perec ne parle pas. Adepte, lui-même, du trompe-l’œil textuel, affirmant qu’« écrire et dessiner sont identiques en leur fond », il examine le sujet, pas l’interprétation, pas la façon dont la photographe rend compte de l’artifice. Pas son art à elle, ses « tromperies » à elle. Étrange. Celle qu’on avait appelée « La photographe du trompe-l’œil », tant ce livre fit date, était née Katherine Ann White en 1930, à Cleveland, dans une famille d’industriels de l’Ohio avec laquelle elle avait plus ou moins rompu à l’adolescence. Elle avait alors appris la photographie, 11

notamment avec quelqu’un du Cleveland Museum of Arts, et s’était engagée sous le drapeau de la Photo League qui, à New York, dès 1938, prônait un idéal « social » de photographie. Elle avait participé à la dernière exposition du mouvement en 1948. Après, longtemps après, dans les années 1970, elle avait succombé aux charmes de la photographie en couleur pour rendre au mieux la beauté troublante, étonnée, des trompel’œil dont nous venons de parler. Voyons-nous le monde en couleur ou en noir et blanc ? Successivement en noir et blanc puis en couleur ? En même temps aussi ? Selon l’humeur ? Selon l’époque ? Selon le sujet ? Le noir et blanc de Cuchi White tend vers le gris. Ce gris calme caractérise les images attentives, discrètes et modérées, réalisées par la jeune fille quand elle était étudiante à Bennington (Vermont), dans une université privée réservée aux femmes, dite « progressiste ». Parmi les professeurs illustres, le psychanalyste Erich Fromm s’efforçait de conjuguer les apports de Freud et de Marx, la danseuse et chorégraphe Martha Graham, inventait la danse moderne aux états-Unis. On l’appelait « La prêtresse aux pieds nus ». Tous ces professeurs de premier ordre auraient dû conduire tout naturellement la jeune fille sur les sentiers étroits de la recherche et de la radicalité artistique. Mais, pour son projet de « Bachelor of Arts », l’étudiante choisit d’effectuer une série photographique dans un lycée du Bronx. Que cherche-t-elle dans ce monde si différent du monde privilégié, de Bennington ? À échapper à ce que d’autres ont nommé « asphyxiante culture » ? À fuir le « politiquement correct » régnant dans une école qui prône l’ouverture mais pratique l’entre-soi ? Dans le Bronx, elle découvre d’autres réalités, se jette dans la vie vraie.  Les données de première main sur les années de formation de la jeune Cuchi White manquent tellement que, pour l’instant, nous en sommes réduits à des conjectures. Mais, regardons les photos prises par elle en ce temps-là. Cela suffit. Rien d’esthétique, là. La vie. La vie des gens. Énorme et minuscule. Des gestes. Un homme adossé à une voiture qui visiblement n’est pas à lui et qui s’oublie dans la lecture d’un journal, une enfant sur le seuil d’une maison qui hésite à sortir, des passants qui passent, des voitures qui roulent, des gens qui se parlent, des ados qui s’apprêtent à lancer des ballons. La jeune Cuchi, loin de l’art qui débarque à New York du côté de chez Stieglitz, découvre la photographie « humaniste » de la Photo League, s’inscrit dans les perspectives offertes par ce mouvement. Le projet, d’origine berlinoise et communiste est ardemment défendu par une association enthousiaste et dynamique : le Workers International Relief. S’installant à New York dans les années 1930, elle prend le nom de Worker’s Camera League, gardant de ses origines un caractère propagandiste consistant à diffuser la culture révolutionnaire soviétique 12

et à s’opposer à la culture réactionnaire américaine. En 1934, des divergences apparaissent dans le groupe et le conduisent à la scission. L’une des deux associations prendra le nom de « Frontier films », l’autre celui de « Photo League », les deux groupes, pas si antagonistes que cela, au fond, conservant une forte imprégnation sociale.  « Be honnest » me disait, me répétait, comme il le disait et le répétait à tout le monde, André Kertesz, quand je lui demandais quel était le secret de son art. Kertesz fut l’un des modèles de Cuchi White. Cette honnêteté qui la caractérise, sera une autre des singularités de la Photo League qui, à son zénith, comptera dans ses rangs Paul Strand, Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Gene Smith, Weegee, Robert Frank, c’est-à-dire la fine fleur de la photographie de reportage américaine ; mais aussi - il faut le souligner - beaucoup d’amateurs. En 1948, l’exposition rétrospective de la Photo League comprenait 96 photographes. La même année elle disparaissait : le FBI l’avait accusée d’être une organisation communiste, subversive et anti-américaine. Presque dans le même temps, le ministère de l’agriculture américain avait créé un organisme appelé FSA (The Farm Securiy Administration) destiné à aider les fermiers les plus pauvres touchés par le crach de 1929 et la dépression qui s’en était ensuivie. Pour promouvoir leur action auprès du public, les dirigeants de cet organisme d’État avaient lancé un programme photographique de grande envergure auquel participèrent Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, Ben Shahn. Walker Evans en était l’âme et le meneur, mais aussi celui qui avait infléchi profondément la ligne directrice de l’entreprise. Avec lui, du « social » elle glissa vers l’« objectif ». Evans travaillait à la chambre, appareil magnifique, idéal pour prendre des sujets inanimés - boutiques, bicoques, maisons - et des personnes arrêtées dans un regard qui fixe l’objectif. L’impeccable précision de ces images impressionne. Bravo l’artiste ! Mais on est à cent lieues du projet initial et de la photographie sociale. On est dans la photographie de musée. Regardez la fameuse photographie de Dorothea Lange réalisée, elle aussi, pour la Farm Society administration : « Mère migrante ». C’est un tableau. Une composition. Une icône. La Photo League est moins connue en France que la FSA. Normal : elle n’a pas été soutenue par les organismes de diffusion américains habituels - ou peu - elle a même été interdite, on l’a dit, et quand elle a été un tant soit peu réhabilitée, les photographes qui en firent partie étaient vieux, parlaient de tout cela au passé. On peut les entendre et les voir sur Internet où l’on montre aussi quelques-unes de leurs photos. Voyez celle-ci, due à Rebecca Lepkoff. Prise dans le Lower East Side, elle montre trois jeunes hommes qui, avec une sorte de sourire distant, dévisagent celle qui s’arrête et les 13

regarde à travers son viseur, apparemment étonnés qu’on les photographie, mais assez contents de l’être, l’un posé de biais avec un peu de défi dans l’attitude, de l’ironie dans le regard, l’autre, menton et sourcils levés, œil de velours, habitué à séduire et, au milieu, un noir comme en attente, visage suspendu dans une expectative qui l’empêche de vraiment sourire, ou de vraiment montrer de l’hostilité. Entre deux hésitations. Ce n’est rien. Un moment, des fragments de vie, des comportements, en passant. Miracles ordinaires. Tentative d’un rapport entre celle qui photographie et ceux qui acceptent cette incursion dans leur quotidien, en jouent, la mettent en scène. Pas d’« objectivité », oh, non ! Au delà de l’humanisme revendiqué, une connivence et de l’humour. Voyez cette photo-là, toute simple, saisie par Erika Stone, montrant le visage d’une petite fille très brune qui, comme si elle jouait avec la photographe, se cache tout en bas de l’image, devant des décombres de pierres, des décombres de maisons, et, sur un fil tendu en haut du cadre, du linge qui sèche. Y a-t-il rien de plus émouvant, de plus profondément humain que ce jeu de la petite fille, ce souffle de vie, au milieu des décombres. Erika Stone, Rebecca Lepkoff s’inscrivent dans un courant semblable : celui de la photo vivante, celui d’un naturel confondant. Comme Cuchi White. Cuchi White, la voilà qui resurgit, non seulement sur Internet, comme les autres, mais par le miracle de quelques dizaines de tirages sauvés de l’oubli par sa fille. Jamais, me semble-t-il, on n’avait vu New York photographié ainsi, si calmement, comme un village, si simplement, avec ce naturel qui faisait aussi le prix des photographes dont nous venons de parler. Ses photos ont été prises on ne sait où exactement, mais qu’importe. Pour la très grande majorité d’entre elles, c’est New York qu’on reconnaît. On regarde ces rues sans gratte-ciels, sans maisons éventrées, ces quartiers populaires mais non dégradés. Une rue, des rues, pas clinquantes, pas luxueuses non plus, bordées de boutiques avec de petits étals, avec, ici, une poussette et un enfant dedans, là des poubelles, là encore des bancs en bois où deux garçons assis regardent qui peut bien s’intéresser à eux. Partout des enseignes vantant les mérites d’ice-creams, de sodas. Et des gens. Des dames qui examinent attentivement des tissus et d’autres qui regardent en passant. Il y a des vues proches, d’autres plus lointaines, où presque rien n’arrive: ici deux hommes en chapeau bavardent, là des enfants sucent des glaces, les deux hommes sont cadrés de loin, les trois enfants de près. Là, entre deux boutiques, un jeune homme rentre chez lui. On le voit à peine. Visage dans l’ombre. Mauvaise photo ? Non : un mouvement, cela suffit. La vie quotidienne. Celle qu’on ne montre jamais ou rarement. Le sens de l’espace est parfait, l’attention en alerte aussi pour une photo qui frémit, mais calmement. On pourrait prendre ces images dépourvues d’éclat, de virtuosité, d’art même, pour des 14

photos d’amateur. Elles en ont le charme, l’innocence, l’audace. Mais à y regarder de plus près, et surtout à regarder l’ensemble, nous comprenons ce qui nous les rend si proches. Picasso disait qu’il avait mis cinquante ou soixante ans à dessiner comme un enfant. Ici, à peine sortie de l’adolescence, rebelle à l’enseignement comme elle le fut à sa classe sociale, Cuchi White, dans ces images vivantes et vraies, sans hausser le ton, ose la candeur. Cuchi White or the quivering subtlety of mere nothings

L’Œil ébloui - the dazzled eye: thirty years ago that’s how Georges Perec entitled a book published by the Editions du Chêne, devoted to trompe-l’œil with a text by himself and photographs by Cuchi White. Dazzled? Yes. Well, yes and no. In my opinion, this eye is more on alert and active than dazzled. More than a photographer, we have a person here and this person is interested in everything: of course, first and foremost here, are the astounding illusions of trompe-l’œil but not only that. Also at work here is a meditation on the powers of photography linked to the way Cuchi White shares her pleasure and astonishment of what she sees in the streets: of what she shows and magnifies while no doubt staying behind her subject in order to ensure that, by framing the image, the illusion is sufficiently visible for us to understand where the achievement lies, how admirable the trick is, and how fascinating the deception. Of necessity, at the same time she must hide a little of what she reveals and discovers, so that the required magic can appear in all its glory. Here we have a subtle game of uncovering and covering up, a back and forth, a lively way of observing. It is great art. It is not simply a “tracking down” as claimed on the book’s dust jacket, it is not a mere collection of marvels. The subtlety of the photographer is not the least significant contributor to the 16

enchantment produced by these images which show pretenses, shiftings of the senses, false moves, tricks and short periods of vertigo which demonstrate how the eye and the brain fall into the trap. The statutes are false, the columns are false, the windows are false, the perspectives, the distant views and the clouds are false, and the human beings are false. In fact, Perec does not talk about this aspect of the work. He himself liked trompe-l’œil in texts, stating when he writes, saying that “writing and drawing are identical in their fondation”. He examines the subject, not the way in which it is interpreted or the manner in which the photographer reports on the article: not her art, not her own deceptions. This is so strange. Such was the impact of this book, she was known as « the trompe-l’œil photographer ». She was born Katherine Ann White in 1930 in Cleveland into a family of Ohio industrialists with whom she more or less broke off relations when a teenager. Then she learned photography, in particular with a tutor at the Cleveland Museum of Arts, and joined the Photo League which had advocated a “social” ideal of photography in New York as and from 1938. In 1948 she took part in the group’s last exhibition. Later, in the 1970s she succumbed to the charms of color photography in order to highlight the disturbing and surprising beauty of the trompe-l’œil just discussed. Do we see the world in color or in blackand-white? First in black-and-white and then in color? Do we also see both simultaneously? Does it depend on our mood? On the moment in time?

On the subject? Cuchi White’s work in blackand-white has shades of grey. This tranquil grey defines the attentive, discreet and mild images produced when, as a young girl, she was a student at the “progressive” University of Bennington in Vermont, a private women’s college. Among its renowned teachers, the psychoanalyst Erich Fromm attempted to combine the contributions of Freud and Marx, and dancer and choreographer Martha Graham invented modern dance in the United States of America. She was known as the « barefoot priestess ». All these first-class teachers should have most naturally led the young girl onto the narrow paths of artistic research and radicalism. However, for her Bachelor of Arts project this student chose to take a series of photographs in a high school in the Bronx. What was she looking for in this place so different from her privileged world in Bennington? Was she trying to escape what has been called “smothering culture”? Was she seeing it from the “politically correct” viewpoint advocated by a school which in fact operated more as a closed environment? In the Bronx she discovered other realities and threw herself into real life. First-hand accounts of the young Cuchi White’s formative years are so rare that we are reduced to conjecture for the moment. However, let us look at the photographs she took at that time. That is enough. There are no aesthetics here. Only life. People’s lives. Great and small. Gestures. A man leaning against a car which he obviously he does not own, and who is lost in reading his newspaper; a child on a porch hesitating to come out of the house; people passing by; cars moving;

people talking; teenagers getting ready to throw balls. Far removed from the art which arrived in New York with Stieglitz, young Cuchi discovered the “humanist” photography of the Photo League and embraced the perspectives this movement offered. This communist project started in Berlin and was fervently promoted by an enthusiastic and dynamic association, the Workers International Relief. When the project came to New York in the 1930s it took the name Worker’s Camera League and retained the propaganda nature of its origins which consisted in distributing revolutionary Soviet culture and countering reactionary American culture. In 1934 divergences appeared in the group which led to a split. One of the associations was called Frontier Films and the other Photo League. In reality, the groups were not very different from one another and both continued to be permeated by a strong social outlook. When I asked him the secret of his art, André Kertesz repeatedly answered, as to everyone: “be honest”. Kertesz was one of Cuchi White’s models. This honesty which defined her was another of the Photo League’s remarkable features. At its height, amongst its members were Paul Strand, Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Gene Smith, Weegee and Robert Frank, the aristocracy of American reportage photography, but also, many amateur photographers. In 1948, the retrospective exhibition of the Photo League included 96 photographers. In the same year, following FBI accusations of being a communist, subversive and anti-American organization. Around the same time, the American Depart17

ment of Agriculture set up an organization called the Farm Security Administration which aimed to help the poorest farmers affected by the 1929 Wall Street Crash and the subsequent Depression. In order to promote their activities to the public, the directors of this government organization launched a major photography program involving Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks and Ben Shahn. Walker Evans was the heart and soul of the program, but it was also he who shifted the project’s direction from “social” to “objective”. Evans used a large-format view, a magnificent camera which was ideal for inanimate subjects such as stores, cabins and houses, and also people at standing still looking straight at the lens. The impeccable precision of these images is impressive; the artist deserves our congratulations, but we are many miles from the initial project and social photography- this is photography for museums. Look at Migrant Mother, the famous photograph taken by Dorothea Lange also for the Farm Security Administration; it is a painting, a composition, an icon.   In France, the Photo League is not as wellknown as the FSA. This is normal as it received little or no support from the usual American distribution bodies and, as we have seen, was even banned. When it achieved a measure of rehabilitation, the photographers who had been part of it were old and spoke of it as past history. We can see and hear them on the internet where some of their photographs are also displayed. Look at this one taken by Rebecca Lepkoff in the Lower East Side. It shows three young men who look with a kind of distant smile at the wom18

an who has stopped to look at them through her lens. They are apparently surprised but pleased enough to be photographed: one posing at an angle with a touch of defiance in his attitude and irony in his look; another with raised chin and eyebrows, velvety eyes, well used to seduction; and, in between them, a black man who appears to be waiting, his face suspended in expectation which prevents him from either properly smiling or properly showing hostility- between two hesitations. It is nothing- just a moment, fragments of life and behaviors, while passing through. Ordinary miracles. There is an attempt to establish a relationship between the person taking the photographs and those accepting this intrusion into their daily lives while playing with it and setting it up. There is no “objectivity”, here but beyond the humanism claimed there is complicity and humor. Observe this very simple photograph taken by Erika Stone showing the face of a very brown little girl who, as if playing with the photographer, hides at the very bottom of the image in front of stones debris, the ruins of houses, with clothes drying on a line across the top of the frame. There is nothing more moving, more profoundly human, than this little girl playing; this breath of life, amoungst the ruins. Like Cuchi White, Erika Stone and Rebecca Lepkoff are part of a similar movement: that of the astoundingly natural, living photograph. Cuchi White has come back, not only on the internet like the others, but miraculously with these tens of prints her daughter has saved from neglect. In my opinion, we have never seen

New York photographed in this way; so calmly, as if it were a village, and so simply, with this natural quality which also giving value to the photographs we have just discussed. We do not know where her photographs were taken but that is not important. We recognize New York in most of them. We look at these streets free of skyscrapers, free of disemboweled houses, these areas which are working-class but not run down. One average street, several streets, lined with shops with small stalls: one featuring a baby carriage containing a small child; another trash cans; yet another with wooden benches where two boys sit looking at whoever may be interested in them. Everywhere there are signs advertising ice-creams and sodas. And there are people. Women closely examine fabrics while others look as they pass by. There are close-ups and distant views where almost nothing is happening: here two men wearing hats are chatting, there children are sucking ice-creams; the two men framed at a distance; the three children in close-up. Over there, between two stores, a young man is walking home. We can hardly see him as his face is in the shade. Is it a bad photograph? No, it is not because there is movement and that is enough. This is daily life which is shown either not at all or rarely. The sense of space is perfect, the attention is also on alert for a photograph which quivers but quivers calmly. We could look on these images which are devoid of brilliance, virtuosity, and even art, as amateur photographs. They have the charm, the innocence and the audacity of amateur photographs but when we look closer, and especially

when we look at all the photographs, we can understand what brings them so close to us. Picasso said that it took him fifty or sixty years to draw like a child. Here, when barely out of her teenage years, while rebelling against both her education and her social class, Cuchi White, with these lively and true images, without raising her voice, dares to be candid, with a subtle and wonderful empathy. à Cuchi Le rapport et les liens que j’entretiens avec Cuchi White et son œuvre sont inédits pour moi. D’ordinaire, le contact avec l’art en train de se faire et avec ceux qui le font, et vice et versa, est au cœur de mon métier. Malheureusement pour moi, Cuchi, je ne l’ai pas connue. Mais Cuchi, je la découvre au hasard et gré de mes recherches entreprises sur les archives de son époux Paolo Boni. Je la « croise » souvent dans ce travail au milieu des piles que je dépouille. Entre une facture de Solex et un ticket de courses, sa jolie écriture, qui rend compte de tant d’événements d’importance pour le chercheur. Cuchi entretenait une correspondance suivie avec famille et amis de par le monde, mais aussi marchands et galeristes de son Paolo. Souvent sa réponse, recopiée ou dupliquée grâce à la bonne vieille technique du carbone, est soigneusement adossée à la lettre du correspondant. Merci à elle ! Cuchi, je l’ai aussi approchée au contact de Paolo, encore vivant. Lors d’une de nos dernières sorties ensemble, ce jour-là nous étions vers la rue de Seine, perdu dans ses pensées, il déclara alors « tu sais, avec Cuchi, on a eu une belle vie ». Une phrase courte qui en dit long lorsque l’on connaît de surcroît l’histoire rocambolesque de leur rencontre. Cuchi, je l’ai découverte plus récemment encore, parlant, se mouvant, acquiesçant, grâce à Christine François, qui avait filmé la famille Picard-Boni et donc le couple Boni-White, à lors de son documentaire J’ai deux mamans à l’été 2002, et qui a généreusement exhumé des rushes à l’occasion de l’exposition Hommage à Paolo Boni pour nous livrer un beau moment plein de chaleur. Depuis, je peux la penser bien vivante. Que dire alors de la découverte de son œuvre ? J’ai pu d’abord en avoir un aperçu en consultant livres d’artistes et catalogues, assez nombreux. Citons ici Suzanne qui m’avait fort impressionnée. L’histoire en images, la trace d’une petite fille décédée, à travers des objets et documents du fonds à l’origine même du petit musée de Cavaillon. Et puis, quelques tirages en chaire et en os : quelques trompe-l’œil lors du rangement de l’appartement qu’elle a occupé avec Paolo pendant près de 60 ans. Nous étions aussi tombées sur des images de bâtiments tels des navires, grands vaisseaux en apesanteur aussi imposants que tranquilles qui naviguent encore dans mon œil. Et puis heureusement -réjouissons-nous, l’affaire est à suivre- l’obstination de ses survivants à passer au peigne fin ses tiroirs où dorment encore, la suspicion est très forte, de grands 21

trésors. Parmi les premières perles recueillies, le parcours de la jeune Cuchi en noir et blanc, un opus auquel appartient ces 47 photographies prises entre 1948 et 1952 aux États-Unis et principalement à New York que nous sommes heureuses de ramener au bercail et de vous présenter toutes ici compilées. Ainsi, outre la jubilation d’observer comment le talent de Cuchi White est déjà présent dans tous les clichés de la jeune Katherine Ann White – une façon directe et pour autant complexe de regarder ; tous les centres d’intérêts qui seront développés vingt ans plus tard en couleur, la traversée de ce temps révolu, -évidemment quel changement !- voit triompher une force vitale inouïe. Aucune plante, aucun lieu, aucune scène, aucun humain avec lesquels vous allez faire bientôt connaissance n’a jamais eu l’air aussi vivant ! Mathilde Hatzenberger Bruxelles, février 2018

To Cuchi

My relationship and links with Cuchi White and her work are like nothing I have experienced before. Usually, at the heart of my work lies the contact with the works of art being created and with the people creating them. Sadly for me, I never knew Cuchi White. However, I have discovered Cuchi haphazardly as I researched the archives of her husband, Paolo Boni. I “bump into her” often as I work through and sift the piles of documents. Between an invoice for a scooter and a food market receipt I come across her lovely handwriting which relates so many events which are important to the researcher. Cuchi maintained a regular correspondence with family and friends throughout the world and also with the dealers and gallery owners of her husband Paolo. Very often, her reply, copied out or reproduced using the good old carbon method, is carefully attached to the back of the correspondent’s letter. Thank you, Cuchi! I also got to know Cuchi through Paolo, who was still alive. On one of our last outings together, when we were near the rue de Seine, lost in thought he said, “you know, with Cuchi, we had a wonderful life”. It is a short sentence which says so much, especially when you know the amazing story of how they met. I also discovered Cuchi more recently, talking, moving about, approving, thanks to Christine François who filmed the Picard-Boni family, and consequently the Boni-White couple, for her documentary J’ai deux mamans (I have two

moms) in the summer of 2002 and who most generously dug out clips on the occasion of the exhibition Homage à Paolo Boni (Hommage to Paolo Boni) to give us a wonderfully warm moment. Since then, Cuchi has been very much alive for me. What can we say when we discover her work? I first caught a glimpse of it when consulting quite a large number of books on artists and catalogues. Let us look at one which made a strong impression on me, Suzanne, a story in pictures of a little girl who has died, told through the objects and documents of the collection which led to the foundation of the small museum in Cavaillon, France. And then, a few real prints, a number of photographs of trompe-l’œil found when tidying the apartment where she lived with Paolo for almost 60 years. We also found pictures of houses like ships, large vessels suspended between the earth and the sky, as imposing as they are tranquil, and which still sail through my mind. And let us be thankful that the hunt continues as her surviving family is determined to go through her drawers with a fine-tooth comb as we strongly suspect that great treasures lie there. Among the first precious findings, the young Cuchi’s journey in black-and-white, the work from which are drawn these 47 photographs taken between 1948 and 1952 in theUnited States of America, principally in New York, which we are most pleased to bring home to show them fully compiled. In this way, apart from our joy in observing how the talent of Cuchi White was already pres23

ent in all the shots taken by the young Katherine Ann White, a way of seeing things which is at once direct and complex; all the themes which were to be developed twenty years later in color, the passage through this bygone age – of course, how things have changed! - sees the triumph of

Cuchi White, son nom d’artiste, est née Katherine Ann White le 22 mars 1930 à Cleveland dans l’Ohio aux États-Unis dans une famille d’inventeurs. Son arrière-grand-père Thomas H. White créa la machine à coudre « White », son grand-père Rollin White breveta un des premiers moteurs à vapeur pour automobile, et avec ses frères Walter et Windsor, il produisit la White Steamer en 1907. À quatorze ans, Cuchi profite de courts séjours à New York pour s’immerger dans le monde de l’art. Les musées, les expositions lui ouvrent d’autres horizons plus près de sa sensibilité que celle de son milieu très bourgeois qui l’étouffe. Vers ses seize ans, elle fait un stage avec le photographe du Cleveland Museum of Arts qui déterminera sa vie pro fessionnelle. En 1947, après avoir vu l’exposition d’Edward Weston au Musée d’Art moderne de New York, elle part rencontrer le photographe à Point Lobos. En 1948, elle commence ses études au Bennington College, université dont l’enseignement est progressiste et en pointe dans le domaine des arts. Cuchi White, her artist name, was born Katherine Ann White, March 22nd 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio in the United States of America, in a family of inventors. Her great-grandfather Thomas H. White manufactured the “White” sewing machine, her grandfather Rollin White patented one of the first steam engine for cars in 1899, and with his brothers Windsor and Walter produced among other cars and trucks, the White Steamer in 1907. When she was fourteen, Cuchi made the most out of short stays in New York City to assimilate the language of arts. Museums and exhibitions opened her mind to new horizons closer to her feelings than her family background, she felt oppressive. She was an intern with the photographer of the Cleveland Museum of Arts at sixteen, what she learned in those months influenced all her professional life. In 1947, after visiting the Edward Weston exhibition at the Museum of Modern Arts in New York, she went to encounter the photographer in Point Lobos. In 1948, she starts studying at Bennington College, university which teaching methods were very progressive and in front line concerning arts. The same year, she took part in one of the last exhibitions of the Photo League called “This is the Photo League“. In 1949, she travels in Europe with her mother Eleanor and her brother Charlie. En 1954, le jeune couple s’installe à Paris. En 1958 naît leur fille Carla, Cuchi cesse la photographie aussi pour soutenir la carrière de Paolo. En 1975, elle recommence à travailler, cette fois-ci en couleur, avec une série sur les trompe-l’œil anciens et contemporains avant qu’on les appelle « Street Art ». Vigni, she met the young painter Paolo Boni, twenty-four years old. She was nineteen. It was the beginning of a life love story. In 1951, she graduated with a Bachelor of Art, with a photo report on a public high school in the Bronx. In 1952, qualified and in age to do what she wanted, she rejoined Paolo in Florence where they were married in February 1953. The roman newspaper Il Mondo di Pannunzio bought fifty of her black-and-white photographs for publishing. In 1954, the young couple moved to Paris. In 1958, their daughter Carla was born, Cuchi stopped making photographs also to take care and back up Paolo in his work. In 1975, she returns back to work, now making colour photographs with a series of ancients and contemporaries trompe-l’œil before they were called “Street Art”.

Elle publiera L’Œil ébloui en 1981, Rêveuse Riviera, en 1983, Les villages perchés de Provence en 1988 et Famille en révolution les Jouves à Cavaillon 1746-1938 en 1989. Elle fait de nombreuses expositions en Europe et travaille dans les années quatrevingt-dix à un projet sur les maisons en forme de bateau dit Navirland et Demeures en Partance, sur des double-image et une série sur les intérieurs baroques. Un grave accident de voiture en 1997 met un point final à son travail. En 2013, « La Cuchi », au rire sonore et au franc parler emmêlant l’anglais, l’italien et le français, nous a quitté en laissant une grande partie de son œuvre encore à découvrir.

Since 1980, her skills were recognized thanks to a personal exhibition in the Arena Gallery during the Rencontres de la photographie d’Arles in France (an International Photographic Festival in this town). Going forward in years, she quit doing slides and started working with bigger size of colour film: 6 x 4,5, 6 x 9 and panoramic. In 1984, she participated to the collective and innovative photographic project Viaggio in Italia. She worked on published books: L’Œil ébloui en 1981, Rêveuse Riviera, en 1983, Les villages perchés de Provence en 1988 et Famille en révolution les Jouves à Cavaillon 1746-1938 en 1989. (The Astonished eye, 1981; Dreaming Riviera, 1983; Perched Villages of Provence, 1988; The Jouves a revolutionary family in Cavaillon 1746-1938, 1989.) She had a lot of exhibitions in Europe and worked in the nineties on a project about houses in shapes of boats called Navirland and Demeures en Partance (Houses ready for departure), and afterwards on series about double images and baroque interiors. A very bad car accident in 1997 puts an end to her work. In 2013, “La Cuchi”, with her amazing laugh and her joyful mixing of English, Italian and French languages, left us with a vast body of work still to discover.
